Having analysed the Sky Sports Fantasy game player list across each position, our next article looks to assess the formation options, discussing the factors that play a part in our decision making when setting up our team and planning transfers.

The Sky Sports offers the opportunity to set your XI up in six different options: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, 3-5-2, 4-5-1 and 3-4-3.

That clearly offers a myriad of choices which, at first glance, presents a problem.

To understand the merits of each of these options effectively, we need to assess the importance of each position to our overall points tally. This is best achieved by looking back on the performance of each position in the last campaign, analysing the top players and assessing how this translated to all available formations.

Firstly, we will look at the five highest scoring and best value (points per million) outfield players per position. Our objective here is to gain an idea of the spread of points available from defence, midfield and attack – the key factor when weighing up each formation.

Joleon Lescott1145.421.11
John Terry1637.920.63
Branislav Ivanovic1658.020.62

Ryan Bertrand is the real stand-out asset here. He was the best value defender in the game and also came in the top five for overall points.

The left-back’s value was significantly boosted by the fact that he was originally priced as Chelsea bench fodder before transforming into a key figure of the robust Southampton rearguard.

Each season, it’s crucial to target and acquire this type of value defensive asset as early as possible as they are key to liberating funds for heavy investment elsewhere. In 2013/14, it was Curtis Davies who emerged as the value option at the back and I would expect at least one strong candidate to come to the fore in defence again this campaign.

Bertrand’s team-mate, Jose Fonte, also proved an excellent pick, whilst John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic turned out to be good value, even though they came with top bracket pricing.

A swap from Ryan Bertrand to Joleon Lescott when Southampton’s shut-outs dried up proved to be the key strategy for success – the Baggies emergence as a clean sheet machine under Tony Pulis coincided nicely with the Saints’ defensive demise.

Riyad Mahrez1144.525.33
Ki Sung-Yueng1235.024.6
David Silva2138.724.48

Eden Hazard emerged as “essential†after earning the most points and representing the best value for midfielders at 27.98 points per million – he was also second overall for both these categories.

The Belgian has been a shoo-in for a couple of seasons now and I’m struggling to see that changing, with his penchant for Man of The Match (MoTM) awards making him an outstanding captain choice.

David Silva also managed to pop up in both tables after his stellar season; he similarly attracts a fair share of MoTM accolades, whilst frequently benefiting from passing bonus as part of City’s dominant midfield.

Santi Cazorla also deserves a mention. He’s an old favourite in the Sky Sports game, having been the top scoring player a couple of seasons ago with 262 points. The Gunners’ playmaker is a very deceptive scorer of points, relying on passing bonus and assists to keep his tally ticking around bursts of goals. He’s not the most explosive but he has proved to be a consistent and reliable points scorer.

Budget midfielders are also required early on in our XI’s while we wait for trends and form to emerge. Swansea’s Ki Sung-Yueng was one of our early picks: a player with an eye for goal and potential for passing bonus is always a good option and when that’s available for just 5.0 million, the value on offer is obvious.

Sadio Mane’s arrival was also key last season, as he soared up the scoring charts and ended the campaign ranked third for overall value across the positions. As we mentioned in our midfield analysis, he’s now enjoyed a significant price hike to 7.6 but remains a key target nonetheless.

Charlie Austin1837.125.77
Sergio Aguero2509.825.51
Danny Ings1617.023.00
Saido Berahino1566.922.61

Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Charlie Austin dominated matters after featuring in the top scoring players overall and the best value categories.

Aguero ended the season as the top ranked player, surpassing Hazard by just a single point, despite making nine fewer appearances.

Harry Kane’s price tag, in what turned out to be his breakthrough season, enabled him to reach the heights of 32.39 points per million. This was the best value return (for an outfield player) by some distance. Indeed, with Kane, Austin and, to some extent, Danny Ings and Saido Berahino presenting such value, it’s inevitable that many will be hunting for similar options this time around.

While we singled out some candidates in our recent analysis – namely Watford’s Troy Deeney and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson – it’s clear that Kane and Austin will be tough acts to follow and we should in no way rely on the budget class of 2015/16 matching their achievements.

Having analysed each of the outfield positions, it’s clear that, as in previous seasons, the midfield stood out as being the pivotal area of our Sky Sports squads. They offer a higher points potential than forwards at a keener price. Midfielders made up five of the top ten scoring players overall and six of the top ten for value (ignoring goalkeepers).

Forwards are ranked next, whilst defenders lag behind by quite a distance, hindered by a scoring system that penalises every goal conceded. The top scoring defender, Branislav Ivanovic, earned 165 points after starting all 38 matches for a cost of 8.0 million. Compare this to the 5.8-priced Mane, who managed only 15 points less over 24 starts.

Final Formation Totals

  • 343 – 1879
  • 451 – 1860
  • 352 – 1910
  • 532 – 1869
  • 442 – 1876
  • 433 – 1851

The findings are pretty conclusive.

While the 3-4-3 is regarded as the most efficient formation in Fantasy Premier League, the results show that, even when you apply data from a season which saw the budget strikers deliver exceptional value, having a five-man midfield still proved optimal.

The 3-5-2 has long dominated as the formation of choice in the Sky Sports game and, even in a year where the likes of Kane and Austin excelled, this still emerged as the key setup, prevailing over the other formations by 29 points.

As mentioned, whether it’s possible for similar budget assets to emerge is open to question; it’s asking a lot for the likes of Deeney or Wilson to mirror Kane and Austin’s output. With that in mind, initially, the viability of a three-man strike force is in question.

We should stress that this can never be an exact science – the 3-5-2 will not be the most efficient formation at all times in the season. There will be periods where opting for three strikers could prove the optimal setup, particularly if strong budget midfield assets come to the fore.

Initially, though, with defenders being generally the weakest position and midfielders the strongest, it’s difficult to argue against setting up with the 3-5-2 come the August 8 kick-off.

Just a little bit of useless fun regarding the value of players last year. Obviously this isn’t how you should select a team, but I thought it was interesting and wanted to share it. I apologize if somebody has done this already!

Based solely on the total score of players, value is calculated by (total score/price). I took the liberty of calculating value for the relevant players from last season and compared them to their respective average values.

The most valuable team you can achieve is as follows (assuming a 3-4-3 formation having a 4.0 keeper, two 4.0 defenders and a 4.5 midfielder that never play):

    .....................Fabianski, 4.0
    .........Clyne, Jagielka, Ivanovic, 4.0, 4.0
Ki Sung-yueng, Chadli, Brunt, Henderson, 4.5
    ..............Kane, Berahino, Ulloa

This team costs 86.5m and would have netted 1662 points.

But, of course, that’s a pretty low score. So how do we upgrade to maximize points while staying under 100m? We must consider the optimal way to upgrade to players with higher total scores while minimizing value loss. Here are some interesting findings:

Fabianski is the go-to keeper, with the highest total score (151) and highest overall value. As a result, there is no room for upgrading here. One thing to note, that extra 0.5m spent over the next best 4.5m keeper (Speroni, 115) granted you 36 points. That’s a lot of value!

    - No upgrades required

In terms of defense, Clyne, Jagielka and Ivan are all close to the top of both the value and score chart, with only Terry to provide score improvement. Terry earned 35 points above both Jagielka and Clyne, but at a cost of 1.5m. How good this is depends on the value of upgrading other positions.

    - 35 points for 1.5m

We have a lot of score upgrades to choose from in the midfield. The following players add at least 10 points per million spent over Brunt (from best to worst): Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Cazorla, Sigurdsson, Eriksen.

    - 105 for 6m
    - 79 for 5.5m
    - 63 for 4.5m
    - 40 for 3m
    - 34 for 3m

Finally, forwards. Berahino and Ulloa, while the best value, definitely did not score as well as the top strikers. The following strikers offered more points than Ulloa (130): Aguero, Costa, Pelle, Ings, Lukaku, Rooney. Their points per upgrade cost are below.

    - 86 for 6.5m
    - 20 for 4.5m
    - 19 for 2m
    - 9 for 1m
    - 5 for 1.5m
    - 2 for 4m

Our super value team costed 86.5m, meaning we have an allotted 13.5m to upgrade with. Going strictly by points per cost values, we would replace the following players:

    • Brunt -> Hazard (+105 points, -6.0m)
    • Clyne/Jagielka -> Terry (+35 points, -1.5m)
    • Ki-Sung-yueng -> Sanchez (+78 points, -5.5m)

This leaves us with 0.5m in the bank, which cannot be used to further increase our points. The final result is:

    .................Fabianski, 4.0
    .......Clyne, Terry, Ivanovic, 4.0, 4.0
    Hazard, Sanchez, Chadli, Henderson, 4.5
    ..........Kane, Berahino, Ulloa

This team costs 99.5m and netted 1880 points last season (without captains).

So what does this reveal? Nothing really, but it's interesting to note the emphasis on midfield and defense as the best places to pick up value. The top strikers seem overpriced given their performances last year, so it’s possible that overloading the front line might not be a good idea.

But it's a new season, and anything can happen. Either way, hope you enjoyed this thought exercise!

Nice post. I actually have a strong emphasis on value but I go on points per minute and include players like Walcott who were excellent value in the games they played but injured most of the season

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/06/10/the-optimal-dead-team-squad-201415/

      Pantilimon (4.5m, 123)

      Ivanovic (7.0m, 179) – Terry 6.5m, 177) – Clyne (5.0m, 142)

      Hazard (10.0m, 233) – Sanchez (10.5m, 207) – Silva (9.0m, 191) – Sigurdsson (6.0m, 154)

      Aguero(C) (12.0, 216*2) – Kane(V) (5.0m, 191 + 48) – Austin (6.0m, 176)

      Heaton (4.5m, 50) – Bertrand (5.0m, 87) – Bellerin (4.5m, 28) – Boyd (4.5m, 33)

      .
This team would have gotten 2,451pts with 0 transfers. That's 2nd place overall in FPL

Billy Gilmore later discovered two even better ones:

The following teams somehow scored an incredible 2472 points, coming in 2 points ahead of Simon March's winning total of 2470.

        Pantilimon
        Terry Ivanovic Clyne
        Hazard Sanchez Silva Sigurdsson
        Aguero(c) Kane Austin

        Heaton Walters Yoshida Wisdom

        Pantilimon
        Terry Ivanovic Bellerin
        Hazard Sanchez Silva Downing
        Aguero(c) Kane Austin

        Heaton Walters Bertrand C.Dawson

Good effort. Of course, the key two words in your analysis are "without captains". FPL players are willing to pay a premium for a few high-priced forwards and mids because they make great captaincy options and the captaincy effectively halves the cost per million.

Having said that, it might be interesting to see what happens if you factor in the captaincy, assuming that from the list of players in your squad the armband goes on the top scorer out of Terry, Ivan, Hazard, Sanchez or Kane each week last season.

Couldn't make last night's game but hearing some interesting news about the Bournemouth Cardiff match from a few of the lads.
Rantie looks a real find with pace and caused all the danger. I know it wasn't a full team, but odds of Wilson/rantie up top? 4.5 starter maybe...

When properly utilized is the key here. LVG tinkered so much last season. Just look at ADM who played 6 different roles AFTER he exploded. So yea. Falcao is absolutely fine.

"make them up to support a view"? its looking at non-penalty contribution per 90.

That's an extremely standard metric to judge a player by when they're not going to be on penalties. Give him 38 games and sure he could get 15 goals but so would nearly any striker in that Chelsea set up.

What stats are you look at? hot conversion at Atletico and Porto when the team was set up for tap-ins? His shot volume and shots in box volume are completely average.

He's only interesting to me in fpl if he starts because of his price point at such a big team. Much like Welbeck was for the first 12 games last year.

But back to the original point, I'd rather see Bamford given a chance rather than field an aging star.

Well he isnt in Aston Villa is he? And no, not all strikers could produce that even with all the players around them. To get to a club at that level, you have to be top level. Includes all top teams. There is a reason why someone is not there instead of him

I'd say there's 10-15 strikers in the league I'd take over Falcao if I were in the market for a striker

Yes well I'm inclined to agree to some extent. They are mou's words. To get the best out of him I think you'd have to play 2 up front and his only role is to finish moves. Not great tactically so strange signing imo

When it comes to Falcao, he has always been top class in finishing. With the players Che has in the mid, i think he is a great signing, but only if they play Falcao and Costa together. I think they would wreck it.

I was struggling with it yesterday, and I'm struggling with it today. Still yet to be convinced regarding which 5mil defender to start with.

Currently have Jenkinson, considering Cedric and Williams. Anyone have a clear preference?

        Currently:

        Azpi - 5mil - Huth - Francis - O'Shea

The issue is that I'm not sure I really rate any of the 5s enough to play them every week. Which would mean that potentially dropping to a 4.5 and rotating mightn't be a bad idea.

You don't rate the Southampton defence and their fixtures?

In the first 12 weeks, these are their favourable fixtures, imo:

new, EVE, wat NOR, wba, SWA, LEI, BOU, sun

That's 9/12 weeks, so if you're rotating them it could work quite nicely. Just 3 weeks where they don't look so hot when they play MUN, che, liv. (Not consecutively)

You make a strong case. I suppose my concerns with Cedric boil down to:

            - S'oton having rearranged their defence again this year, and arguably their best player Schneiderlin leaving the CDM spot (Clasie also injured)

            - Cedric's stats just not being all that crash hot. A lot been made of his goal threat but he only scored twice in 65 apps for Sporting. Plus he didn't mind a YC, with almost 10 a season.

But, you're probably right - he does still stand above the rest at 5 I think. Cheers 🙂

Hmm that's a tough one. If you were to play one every week I'd choose Cedric as Williams and Jenkinson have some very tough fixtures and I trust SOT defence a bit more.

Not worried by his history of cards (10 per season) and relatively low goal threat (2 goals in 65 for sporting)? Or are we thinking he's going to be more attacking at S'toton.

        Cheers mate.

But isn't Walcotts big appeal the fact he can come off the bench and score? This game is PPG based. A bunch of bench cameo's sounds like a massive negative rather than a positive.

Well we know Wally is gold when he's a regular starter right. The issue is of course whether he will start and Jonty explained it away by saying he can come off the bench and score so that isn't that big a deal.

The point on how it isn't reflective of Wallis potential is only if he is expected to now start as often as ozil. If not then the ppg start is relative.
Personally I've gone ozil and Ramsey after looking at the data

You are putting a lot of faith in the idea that he will now be a first choice regular. There is a lot more competition now since last time he was fit for a full season.

Not at all. Arsenal have largely the same squad as last season. The competition will be just as fierce as last season, he won't start every game.

Not a fan of a doubling up on MIDs. Sure, one GW you could get one to score and the other get a couple of assists but when the following GW comes, you're almost guaranteed to have one of the MIDs score 3 points or less. The only way it would be effective is if you plan on using a Free Transfer on one (Not to mention having to choose the right one to transfer) Plus, we all know what happens when we have a plan for a FT...

*Injury or suspension to a benched player who's price will surely drop if you don't get rid of him quick*

Let's say that you double up on Cazorla and Walcott for the first two GWs and they both kill it on GW1. I wouldn't be comfortable the following GW even if it's against Crystal Palace because you still have the possibility of the likes of Ozil, Ramsey, Giroud, and Oxlade-Chamberlain getting the limited FPL points on that given GW instead of your two players.

I kind of get what you're saying but you aren't expressing it well. I would argue that double mids is no different to having a mid and a fwd from the same team. Its simply doubling up on 'attack'. I do hear what you're saying though. A team would need to score more goals in order for both your attacking players to be involved. So its best to only double up when its a strong attacking side with a good run of fixtures where you might expect a lot of goals.

A FOR's job is to score goals. A MID's job, essientially, is to create goals. I'd be more comfortable having a FOR and a MID from the same team than two MIDs. Let's say I have Costa and he scores a brace while Fab gets an assist. The next GW I wouldn't be surprised if Fab got a couple of assists and Costa scored a goal. Now with Hazard and Fab in the same team, I'd be surprised if both contributed to one goal, let alone multiple, consecutive GWs. And they're probably the two most influenced MIDs attacking-wise in the same team

Totally non FPL related question to ask on here, but i'm out of ideas.

Does anyone have any good excuses, and i mean real good excuses that i can say to not attend a wedding?

It's next Saturday, and i dont want to go just because it's opening day of the season, its because i genuinely do not want to go lol.

Open to any suggestions, i know some funny ones are going to appear here haha! 🙂

With Watford playing their last preseason match tonight I thought I'd compile this of who scored and assisted their goals in preseason. many of you may find this useless but I had a bit of free time and decided to look through who scored and assisted these goals as Ighalo vs Deeney seems to be a bit of a debate which is going on.

    Comparison:
Watford played 6 preseason games. Scoring 13 and conceding 6 in the process. Most seem to be going for Deeney on here as he was there top scorer last year and scored well in the championship for the last 3 years. During preseason Deeney scored 2 goals and assisted 3. This seems a respectable amount in 6 games but Ighalo scored 6 goals in the same amount. Fair enough Ighalo did not register an assist over the 6 games but 6 goals scores a lot more in fantasy football than 3 assists and 2 goals does.

Also worth noting is over the 6 games the Watford centre back Craig Cathcart assisted twice. I realise Watford Defence is useless and it's very unlikely that anyone will want one especially with there fixtures at the start but if you want a Watford defender he would be my choice.

I drafted very rough estimates of fantasy points Ighalo and Deeney would have scored over the 6 games and it goes as follows.

    Ighalo: 34
    Deeney: 33

As you can see it's very very Close.

I personally would still go for Deeney despite the 0.5m extra. He has just signed a new contract, he's the captain and will want to impress and he has more of a strong premier league build. Also, 4 of Ighalos goals came against SC Verl and St. Albans, 2 very poor oppositions I am unsure how he would cope against better teams. However, I still think Ighalo is by far the best option at the 5m mark.

Love the Okazaki pick...but it's madness. Leicester have so many strikers they can call on and a new manager with a penchant for rotation. I want to pick him too...but I just can't.

Janmaat is pretty much my 5th defender, will only play him when he has easy fixtures. And yeah I have seen no other Okazaki in all the teams here. I'm taking a chance though.

Yeah, not many are willing to take the risk. If it pays off it could be golden.

I would personally drop Janmaat to a 4.5m def if he's only going to play a minor role, and use the 0.5m elsewhere. Most would probably advise Okazaki -> Sakho, but I'm not sure I'm sold on him.

Hey GB, re: the all-out-attack chip, I made a post here and on reddit about waiting until gw38.

Here's the reddit link I have to hand: https://www.reddit.com/r/FantasyPL/comments/3eionm/the_case_for_holding_your_all_out_attack_chip_all/

I like that idea, assuming all those players will be fit on that day obv

Also the league may be decided by then, so perhaps there will be some rotation although last season pretty much all the big players started I believe

Question is, can you resist the temptation all season? That may be the tougher part

yeah its certainly not a plan set in stone but I think some time in the final third of the season when you have the TV to splash around is definitely the right time-frame to be looking at.

Interesting. But you won't have 4.0 - 4.0 - 4.0 - 4.0 on the bench. And your additional attacker could just as easily score 2pts. Is that efficient.

Tbf, it is a weak chip. And doesn't hold much value. It's difficult to gauge how to use it the most effectively. Even in GW38 I can't see myself having a pricey 5th mid though. City, Ars, Mun, Che all have good fixtures...

To be fair, I love your idea for a WC in week 2 strategy, but I'm looking at week 11 for mine and wouldn't change it for the sake of the chip.

In all honestly, there's a chance I could not play it at all by the time I get that deep into the season.

Another thought is holding onto it until a defensive injury occurs. It potentially means I could play with two 4.0 defenders on the bench knowing I have insurance against one of my other three starting.

          • 14 Years

Assuming your benched mid at the time get 2pts, you haven't gained enough from it imo.

          Maybe the chip is worthless...

Mind if I post your team on reddit to get opinion? I'm really being swayed here as it means you can avoid Swansea, Tottenham and West Ham's awful opening fixtures and get a sweet run gw2 onwards.

So far the best options are definitely one of gw1, defensive injury crisis, gw38 or worthless

Does team value affect this chip?

If you raised your team value, would you spend it on the 5th mid?

Usually it ends up on 3rd defender going premium, but if I could have two subs going into gw38 Id definitely prefer to jig it around to the 5th mid. Big IF there though.

Not entirely sure that Ki & Mahrez are nailed on...though they should be really, they're both good enough. Expect a little enforced rotation is all (doesn't matter too much; you don't need attacking rotations to be perfect anyway).

            • 11 Years

Yes, Mahrez's game time is my biggest concern. I like the early fixtures for all three teams with the exception of the odd game week here and there. This could potentially help to cover those gaps without unnecessary transfers in a way that a 4.5m 5th mid would not allow me to do.

I like Balders's suggestion of Redmond - he seems the best nailed on 5.5m mid at the moment.

I don't know why I hadn't noticed him - particularly as he briefly snuck in my team a couple of years ago. At 5.5m for Redmond could be good value. I'll play around and see what I can come up with. Thanks.

57% combined ownership for Everton's starting defence (Howard brings it up to 60%)

Madness considering their fixtures after Watford.

My mate is a so-called "casual" and I spoke to him about his fantasy team. He has Matic and Coquelin in his starting 11, simply because they play for Arsenal and Chelsea.

Some of those players don't look at fixtures, form or point potential, just what team they play for.

My name is Toast and I am a Tinkerer. There I said it! Please help me beat this addiction! A bit about me that I have played for years now and am usually top 50k with best in top 300. However last year I finished 2nd in my mini league so need a comeback season. Looking for solid start with earlyish WC

    Myhill // Hennesy
    Kosc // Apzi // Huth // Oshea // Targett
    Hazard // Wallcott // Mane // Depay // Bentelab
    Rooney // Pelle // Sakho

    0.0 itb

Gk: Myhill should be good till October and am planning an early WC. Fixtures aren't great but reading Giggs post I'm going for save points. Still waiting for Henners to move to WBA
Def: Kosc over Mert for bps and good fixtures. Apzi as my stalwart Chelsea who I have every year. Targett a placeholder for a 4.0. Huth and Oshea rotate
Mid: Haz as I'm too chicken to go Fab. Depay I hear could be a monster, very fit we know he starts and playing in the hole. Mane looked great with two assists in Europa. Wallcott will start GW1 and can easily downgrade if he gets dropped.
Fwd: Pelle and Sakho both looked good in pre season and pretty good early fixtures

    Many thanks for your help

You're so blinded by the basic appeal of Hazard it's amusing. Fabregas is statistically backed to have a better start of a season than Hazard. Do you think because many FPL managers own him from the start he'll magically play lights out from the start? How about you keep the negativity to a minimum.
