Having analysed the Sky Sports Fantasy game player list across each position, our next article looks to assess the formation options, discussing the factors that play a part in our decision making when setting up our team and planning transfers.

The Sky Sports offers the opportunity to set your XI up in six different options: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, 3-5-2, 4-5-1 and 3-4-3.

That clearly offers a myriad of choices which, at first glance, presents a problem.

To understand the merits of each of these options effectively, we need to assess the importance of each position to our overall points tally. This is best achieved by looking back on the performance of each position in the last campaign, analysing the top players and assessing how this translated to all available formations.

Firstly, we will look at the five highest scoring and best value (points per million) outfield players per position. Our objective here is to gain an idea of the spread of points available from defence, midfield and attack – the key factor when weighing up each formation.

Joleon Lescott1145.421.11
John Terry1637.920.63
Branislav Ivanovic1658.020.62

Ryan Bertrand is the real stand-out asset here. He was the best value defender in the game and also came in the top five for overall points.

The left-back’s value was significantly boosted by the fact that he was originally priced as Chelsea bench fodder before transforming into a key figure of the robust Southampton rearguard.

Each season, it’s crucial to target and acquire this type of value defensive asset as early as possible as they are key to liberating funds for heavy investment elsewhere. In 2013/14, it was Curtis Davies who emerged as the value option at the back and I would expect at least one strong candidate to come to the fore in defence again this campaign.

Bertrand’s team-mate, Jose Fonte, also proved an excellent pick, whilst John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic turned out to be good value, even though they came with top bracket pricing.

A swap from Ryan Bertrand to Joleon Lescott when Southampton’s shut-outs dried up proved to be the key strategy for success – the Baggies emergence as a clean sheet machine under Tony Pulis coincided nicely with the Saints’ defensive demise.

Sky Sports Top Five Scoring Midfielders 2014-15

Sadio Mane1505.825.86
Riyad Mahrez1144.525.33
Ki Sung-Yueng1235.024.6
David Silva2138.724.48

Eden Hazard emerged as “essential” after earning the most points and representing the best value for midfielders at 27.98 points per million – he was also second overall for both these categories.

The Belgian has been a shoo-in for a couple of seasons now and I’m struggling to see that changing, with his penchant for Man of The Match (MoTM) awards making him an outstanding captain choice.

David Silva also managed to pop up in both tables after his stellar season; he similarly attracts a fair share of MoTM accolades, whilst frequently benefiting from passing bonus as part of City’s dominant midfield.

Santi Cazorla also deserves a mention. He’s an old favourite in the Sky Sports game, having been the top scoring player a couple of seasons ago with 262 points. The Gunners’ playmaker is a very deceptive scorer of points, relying on passing bonus and assists to keep his tally ticking around bursts of goals. He’s not the most explosive but he has proved to be a consistent and reliable points scorer.

Budget midfielders are also required early on in our XI’s while we wait for trends and form to emerge. Swansea’s Ki Sung-Yueng was one of our early picks: a player with an eye for goal and potential for passing bonus is always a good option and when that’s available for just 5.0 million, the value on offer is obvious.

Sadio Mane’s arrival was also key last season, as he soared up the scoring charts and ended the campaign ranked third for overall value across the positions. As we mentioned in our midfield analysis, he’s now enjoyed a significant price hike to 7.6 but remains a key target nonetheless.

Sky Sports Top Five Scoring Forwards 2014-15

Harry Kane2176.732.39
Charlie Austin1837.125.77
Sergio Aguero2509.825.51
Danny Ings1617.023.00
Saido Berahino1566.922.61

Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Charlie Austin dominated matters after featuring in the top scoring players overall and the best value categories.

Aguero ended the season as the top ranked player, surpassing Hazard by just a single point, despite making nine fewer appearances.

Harry Kane’s price tag, in what turned out to be his breakthrough season, enabled him to reach the heights of 32.39 points per million. This was the best value return (for an outfield player) by some distance. Indeed, with Kane, Austin and, to some extent, Danny Ings and Saido Berahino presenting such value, it’s inevitable that many will be hunting for similar options this time around.

While we singled out some candidates in our recent analysis – namely Watford’s Troy Deeney and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson – it’s clear that Kane and Austin will be tough acts to follow and we should in no way rely on the budget class of 2015/16 matching their achievements.

Having analysed each of the outfield positions, it’s clear that, as in previous seasons, the midfield stood out as being the pivotal area of our Sky Sports squads. They offer a higher points potential than forwards at a keener price. Midfielders made up five of the top ten scoring players overall and six of the top ten for value (ignoring goalkeepers).

Forwards are ranked next, whilst defenders lag behind by quite a distance, hindered by a scoring system that penalises every goal conceded. The top scoring defender, Branislav Ivanovic, earned 165 points after starting all 38 matches for a cost of 8.0 million. Compare this to the 5.8-priced Mane, who managed only 15 points less over 24 starts.

Final Formation Totals

  • 343 – 1879
  • 451 – 1860
  • 352 – 1910
  • 532 – 1869
  • 442 – 1876
  • 433 – 1851

The findings are pretty conclusive.

While the 3-4-3 is regarded as the most efficient formation in Fantasy Premier League, the results show that, even when you apply data from a season which saw the budget strikers deliver exceptional value, having a five-man midfield still proved optimal.

The 3-5-2 has long dominated as the formation of choice in the Sky Sports game and, even in a year where the likes of Kane and Austin excelled, this still emerged as the key setup, prevailing over the other formations by 29 points.

As mentioned, whether it’s possible for similar budget assets to emerge is open to question; it’s asking a lot for the likes of Deeney or Wilson to mirror Kane and Austin’s output. With that in mind, initially, the viability of a three-man strike force is in question.

We should stress that this can never be an exact science – the 3-5-2 will not be the most efficient formation at all times in the season. There will be periods where opting for three strikers could prove the optimal setup, particularly if strong budget midfield assets come to the fore.

Initially, though, with defenders being generally the weakest position and midfielders the strongest, it’s difficult to argue against setting up with the 3-5-2 come the August 8 kick-off.

Probably wont need to with an easy route to Aguero already in place.

I very rarely have Chelsea defenders, like to keep defence cheap.
Lack of Arsenal is the worry with this team

in structure it's similar to mine except I've got Targett and I've only got £1.0m off the pitch...I have 7 ways to get Aguero in 2 transfers

but I think you've got some dodgy players there

it looks like a team picked by somebody who isn't going to wildcard early

Krul looks like a horrible option, especially as a stand alone keeper.
Not a fan of Clark or Ward, defence is incredibly weak.

      Jerome???

I posted a link to an article I'd written the other day which gives details of a number of free to enter FPL leagues with prizes. I did check before posting and the post went green but now I think it might have been removed maybe because you have to register with the site to see the leagues.

I don't want to cause any problems and won't post the link again if it will, but I think it would be a shame as the the value of the prizes is now over £5,000 (it'll be over £6,000 tomorrow when the site is updated). I wrote the article based on how I did last season where I won 11 of the 15 leagues I entered and won just under £3,000.

Anyway if anyone can confirm it is definitely ok for me to post it I will if not I won't

    Cech

Weak bench for sure, but I quite like this team.

Also, if you want to use the aoa chip, play with 4.5 defenders and the strongest attacking 8 you can afford. Having Azpi and Ivan for this chip simply doesn't make sense.

Exactly. Unless you WC, get rid of expensive defenders and invest in the best attacking threats, there is no reason to use the chip.

If you were to use it, you'd want to get the eight best attackers you can for GW1 and then wildcard straightaway.

No, that's what's great. You wouldn't want Agüero away at WBA or Benteke away at Stoke anyways. Go all-out Chelsea, United and Arsenal, throw Lukaku and a BOU player in there and you'll have 11 home games for GW1 with eigth attackers and then WC for GW2 when you can bring in Kun, Benteke or whoever you'd like.

      2. mcgrejam
        • 11 Years

Well I was thinking instead of azi I'll get mertesacker. Then I can wait a couple weeks and use 2 free transfers to get rid of Walcott/pelle and bring in aguero/Mutch. Then just play the remaining midfielders and put Mutch on the bench. That way I save a wildcard and any points hit.

i have 2.5 mill in the bank for Rooney -> Aguero

I really don't know how to tactically spend that without it causing an issue later on, may just keep it in the bank but dam its burning a hole in my pocket

If Kun doesn't feature in the first game, if he isn't in the squad for sure i mean, i'm gonna go with Rooney and maybe keep 1M ITB at most.

If it may help, I am keeping 0.5 itb and do Sterling --> 7.0

My front 8 would still look decent

      11.5 8.5 7.0 7.0 4.5
      13.0 8.0 6.5

The likely scenario is you'll want both, I know it's a headache 🙂

    How is this? Liking this:

    Butland Ruddy
    Azpi Mert Williams O'Shea Huth
    Mane Henderson Sterling Walcott Wanyama
    Rooney Costa Sakho

Sterling and Costa out when Aguero is fit...

It's nice but if you take sterling out too fit Aguero in your midfield might be a bit light? Just a thought

I'm going to be doing a draft FPL game with 9 of my friends next week: Simaliar rules as the official game, so we all have a £100 m budget etc

What strategies should I be taking into consideration...I'm guessing a lot depends on the order of picks but asides from obviously looking for the likes of Hazard/Aguero/Sanchez etc in my first picks, should I still be considering things such as defensive rotation etc?

Thoughts on having BOTH Hazard and Fabregas?

Would rather have Walcott or Sterling alongside Hazard, tbh.

But how about Walcott / Haz / Fab / 7.0?

That's very close to what I have, actually. I've gone with Hazard - Walcott - Sterling and 7.0. Do not fancy having two Chelsea midfielders at this point myself, but Fabregas proved last season he's a great pick, so go for it!

Sterling/Walcott seems a bit to punty to me. Both of them could easily get less minutes than you'd want, and I would like to see more of them before I decide. But I'd like one of them. Currently on Walcott.

I've gone for both - Fab is Mr Consistent first half of a season and Hazard is Hazard.

      Also got Walcott alongside.

I'm beginning to think it's the best solution. Currently on Haz/Chadli vs Silva/8.5 - and Fabregas in both of the alternatives.

Need a Chelsea defender and hazard. That leaves 1 spot left. What if Costa starts banging them in and you've to do major surgery to get him?

Would it be that major, though? Rooney and one of the mids to Costa and a 8.5?

With Fabregas and Walcott in the team, would you go...

    A) Haz / Chadli

    or

    B) Silva / 8.5

    --

    Fabregas - Walcott - HAZ / SILVA - CHADLI / 8.5

@Disable - who do you reckon is the best cheap defender in Sky?

Up to 4.8 but cheaper the better obviously!

If your playing the fixtures then Elphick 4.1 or Francis 4.8.

Seaosn long probably Angella just because hes so cheap at 3.9, probably wont get many cleanies but has goal threat and its what you do with the spare money that counts

Yep, not an expert when it comes to promoted teams.

I would ask Applebonkers if hes nailed or indeed if Ang is

Problem is that with the new manager i doubt anyone can say 100%

    Thoughts on this lot ?

    Butland/Ruddy
    Cédric, Azpilicueta, O'Shea, Huth, 4.0
    Walcott, Hazard, Ramsey, Depay, Fletcher
    Rooney, Sakho, Pellè

Don't like the 4.0 DEF but the other four defenders are rotating pretty well so not too worried about that, if I change my mind I could upgrade the 4.0 to Mert if I swap Depay to Milner/Chadli.
