Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

    Ruddy/Rudd

    Azpi/Kosc/Kaboul/Huth/4.0

    Hazard/Cesc/Cazorla/Sinclair/4.5

    Sakho/Rooney/Pelle

    3.0 mitb

The 3m is to make getting both sanchez and aguero in much easier

Quite happy with my defence as I can play 4 at the back during most weeks since both lei and sun have great fixtures

My midfield however im not quite as happy, I had walcott but after the game today i decided he is not really worth it so switched to cesc, i picked sinclair over ritchie since im planning to downgrade one of my strikers to wilson down the line and didnt want to double up on BOU

    Looks solid?

    The 4.0m defender conundrum.

A valuable saving of 0.5m to spend elsewhere whilst forgoing a starter?

    or

4.0m of dead funds from your already scant budget?

    Schmeichel (Schwarzer)
    Ivan Bellerin Cedric (Francis Baker)
    Hazard Walcott Mane Payet (Surman)
    Rooney Pelle Sakho

*3 Saints but they have good fixtures and Pelle can become a 5.5 and Rooney to Aguero over the coming weeks.
*Double West Ham attack but they have good weeks 2 and 3 and both Payet and Sakho have looked good.

After today I have even more concerns about Walcott's gametime. He was poor all game and Giroud led the line much better when he came on. After this, I can't see Giroud not starting particularly against a West Ham side who are likely to sit a bit deeper making Walcotts pace less useful.

That means it is either Walcott or Ox to start and on the basis of today, it is not even a contest for GW1. I am not saying Ox is a good pick, just that Walcott it looking unlikely to play week 1.

Haz will easily get more points but until Jan, they should be quite similar and you can do an awful lot with 2.5m elsewhere.

What do people reckon about 4.0 mill defender options then? The best punt I can see is S Taylor for Newcastle, he's had a run of games pre-season and if he can stay injury free he's quality. Any others?

Just had the question if 4.0 million defenders are worth it and comments state a valid point:
You'll probably won't be using him and if you pick the best of the 4.0 million defenders, he'll have a high ownership as well.
This will increase the chance of him dropping in value so you're advised to take a really, really bad defender.

Same as the hot topic by Giggs Boson earlier, are people not tempted by the 253 chip first week and then a wildcard for week 2? If played well you could easily get a great score in the first week and then for week 2 and onwards you've got the whole of GW1 to assess and find the right bargains etc. For me I feel this tactic could put me into an early lead in my mini leagues and then by building a strong squad after week 1 I can maintain this. Also unless your squad suffers some injuries or suspensions a wildcard before Christmas is often not needed.

Plan on lining up like this for week 1:

    Ruddy

    Ivanovic - Koscielny

    Fabregas - Walcott - Sterling - Depay - Ritchie

    Rooney - Lukaku - Vardy

Don't think there's any risk atall with this tactic, not too much to lose really, but potentially a lot to gain from it.

2-5-3 chip could be well used in GW38.
That is usually when the crazy points are scored. It could work out for you but how many points do you seriously think you can gain from it? Picking a mid over a defender isn't a big difference.

    2. Shiner
      • 11 Years

It seems a really tricky chip to use tactically. I guess if you're planning on using the WC so early doors then this could work.

I don't see the point of having Sakho if you're going to bench him really, if that's what your format is suggesting. I'd switch to 3-4-3. Other than that, the team isn't bad at all, lack of Hazard could be worrying to some.
