Tempted into dealing our Wildcards by yet another “mediocre” Gameweek, Granville and I go through almost the entire episode before Jonty reveals he’s weakened and gone “active”. It’s a revelation that almost has us both logging off and reaching for our own panic buttons.

Before that dramatic finale, we find salvation via another bout of “rough the smooth”, cheering ourselves with tales of Gameweek totals which dip below even our miserable tallies.

We also take a further round of community questions, forcing me to “fess up” on Theo Walcott, while Granville laments Wayne Rooney’s form and the three of us tackle the merits of Mahrez, Ozil and loading up on City assets.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Had a thought on the best time to play your all out attack chip. Why not on the DGW you're going to bench boost into ensure that your 5th mid is good and then use AOA to play them? Especially if it's last GW of the season as there's always a game or two that go mental.

        So...
        WC
Bench Boost with a team set up well I.e 5 strong midfielders as they're all going to play in your DGW
Then AOA as this is the only time your 5th mid and strikers are likely to be good.

        Just a thought

It does actually. Last double will likely have cheap defenders from teams scrapping for survival who often guve excellent value too so you should be able to stack up on the front 8 plus you will be maxed out on value at that point too so should be able to afford the best front 8 possible

If you keep your wc until closer to Xmas when rotation usually bites worst then you should have enough value built up to have a decent 5th mid and just play it whenever that 5th mid has the best fixt then as you will have a number of regular gws to choose from

I'm confused. Are you talking about the week after the DGW? Because you're going to make your 5th mid option good for the DGW bench boost anyway?

Ok we all have our own opinions on players, so here some maths to help you decided who to go over Silva or Yaya, unless you want both.

Goals avg over last 5 seasons.

    Yaya 48/5 = 9.6 goals per season
    Silva 33/5 = 6.6 goals per season

Assists avg over last 5 seasons.

    Yaya 31/5 = 6.2 assist per season
    Silva 62/5 = 12.4 assist per season

So Yaya wins on goals, Silva wins on assist. How does that convert in to points?

Let's say due to bonus points avg that every goal is also 1.5 bonus points and an assist 1.

    Yaya.
    9.6 x 6.5 = 62.4 points +
    6.2 x 4 = 24.8
    Total= 87.2 points

    Silva
    6.6 x 6.5 = 42.9 points +
    12.4 x 4 = 49.6 points
    Total= 92.5 points

Plus 2 game points and cs points over the season.

Now yes playing mins differ, but what use are you not on the pitch? Is Silva really worth the extra 1.5m?

Hope this helps you guys decide.

Interesting analysis. Just cant see Yaya replicating that 20 goal season which skews his stats. Hence why I go Silva but with the extra cash maybe its worth it

you have to factor in the form, when yaya was banging in the goals he was at his peak, I wouldnt say he is any more, not the same kind of force imo

Nice write up but not relevant IMO for the following two reasons:

Yaya is still a class player but is regressing very much each season
Silva is getting better and better especially his goal threat

These two factors make the analysis out of date IMO.

Yea have a bad feeling about Murphy's Law striking the GW3 wildcarders. I do reckon Chelsea will bounce back in a big way - big signal of intent with the recent transfers hence kept Hazard. But not sure if I would (c) him! VC atm for what it's worth.

I'm exactly in the same position as you. Thinking of either hazard or Aguero since I'm never going to get back to last season position ever again...

Is it too risky to make such a captaincy move now?

              Yep it's risky.

Big risk, big reward they say. Kun (c) this week is too safe for my liking. And I won;t be surprised if he fails to deliver - EVE might want to be tight again.

Some lovely price falls happening or due for players I may well want later.

Jerome 4.9m, Francis 4.4m, Mane 7.9m, Milner 6.9m, Bony 8.3m (only takes an injury for Aguero), Firmino 8.3m, Ki 5.3m, Ritchie 5.8m, Lens 6.4m, Hazard 11.4m/11.3m, Sigurdsson 7.4m, Fabregas 8.9m/8.8m...

I'm sure I'll want some of those. 🙂

Not sure about you guys but I don't think Fabregas is working at Chelsea. Looked good early on when he signed but he doesn't seem to be doing good defensively or offensively. Matic/Pogba would be ideal for them with Pedro/Hazard/Willian ahead.

Not a reject. His form declined in the second part of the every season, but his records/stats were still very good.
Barcelona needed a more stronger and hard working midfielder so as to accomodate their frontline, which is why he was sold and Rakitic was brought in.

Sanchez was sold too, so i dont reckon you rate him also highly.

Fab is not and never has been world class.
That term right now would be reserved for the likes of Ronaldo and messi. And in their prime in his position Iniesta and Xavi. Fabregas isn't close in my opinion

No, I was commenting on his suggestions, not what I think.

Lampard was world class in his prime but you'd never see anyone admit it. A poll of Barca supporters about the one player in the world they'd most like Barca to buy back in 2006 or so had Lampard top with around 80% of the votes. Gerrard was 3rd.

There are world class players in the PL right now. Hazard, Aguero, Courtois, Sanchez and Silva to name but 5.

                        Ronaldo and Messi?

As a CM Fabregas doesn't even compare to Essien, Lampard and Ballack in their prime. As a #10 he was superb at Arsenal but he hasn't played there regularly for years.

        But in what position?

He prefers CM to #10 but he's not defensively astute enough to play CM in a 4-2-3-1 against the best teams. Nor strong enough. In games when Chelsea are dominant he's fine because Matic is enough. Otherwise he's iffy, pushed off the ball too easily and caught out of position too often.

I have been saying for 6 months or more that above all Chelsea need a powerful CM to play alongside Matic. Mikel lacks sufficient quality. Ramires has energy but is also positionally suspect and better in a 4-3-3. If we get Pogba that's the signing the team has been crying out for.

With Pogba or similar, Chelsea could move to 4-3-3 or Fabregas could play #10. That would balance the team better.

The great Chelsea teams 2004-07 had Lampard, Makelele, Essien and later Ballack at their prime to choose from in CM. The central midfield was a powerhouse and destroyed teams. Matic is the only player we currently have of that calibre. Better AMs, yes perhaps (although Robben was no slouch). CM/DM not so much.

Yeah I totally see where you are coming from. I mentioned below that actually Fab would be better suited in a 4-3-3 as you say. Agreed with the Chelsea teams of the past, midfield was always the one thing you dominated and a switch to 4-3-3 with the right players could make you very powerful once again.

The signings we are talking about now (Pedro, Stones, Pogba) are exactly what is needed. Couldn't be better.

Jose needs to be enabled to build a new team now. It seems that the board have caught up with that at last.

This could well be the last season for Ivan and JT. Both have less than 12 months on their contracts. We have to be looking to the next 3-4 years. And it's a classic thing - PL winners that don't strengthen immediately almost inevitably struggle.

Totally different players, depends on what you want in your team and what fits your style of play. Pogba and Ramires are box-to-box work horses, Ramsey is another example.

Fabregas is a playmaker, can be advanced but best fits in the deep lying role. Those players don't run around as much and may look lazy sometimes. Managers rely on these players to control play with their passing and find those killer passes...

I wasn't comparing Cesc to Pogba, I am saying Pogba alongside Matic would suit Chelsea better. That could mean pushing Fabregas in behind Costa but again I don't think he is the player he used to be.

To be fair I take your point with this. A 4-3-3 system would likely suit him better than the 4-2-3-1.

Point well made and is exactly how I feel. They aren't there for the tackles and the work ethic they are there to control the game wether it seems obvious they are or not. Cesc is a very intelligent midfielder.

Judging by the posts on here a LOT of people have wildcarded 😯

Still faaaar to early for that sort of thing imo, 2 weeks of the transfer window to go and then the dreaded phantom injuries of the international break to worry about

If you think the start of this season has been stressful wait until after GW4 and GW8 😆

True, there has been some unfortunate teams that probably need to use it

      Entirely disagree.

If your team is in such a mess, it may be necessary. You can tell when watching a player that they're out of sorts. These sorts of things don't tend to correct themselves overnight. i.e Rooney

It'd be nice to have the luxury of waiting until later in the season, but by that point you may have fallen too far behind.

ALSO, losing your WC is not the end of the world, it just means you may have to plan a little further than you might normally, and take the odd hit

      Just wondering that.

He's an obviously brilliant captain option but, given Aguero's fixtures, how often are we really going to pick him?

Once captaincy stops being a factor then maybe he's not so essential, especially with other Arsenal mids looking like potentially good options.

I would presume he would be the long-term replacement for Demichelis

Has great European experience for a top side and is in his prime. Can't expect City to compete in the PL, FA, C1 and CL with just Kompany, Demichelis and Mangala.

One gets injured and that's a hell of a lot of fatigue shared between the other two players.

He is infact very different to Walcott...

Able to play in tight spaces, better running with the ball, better finisher, equally capable with either foot.... etc.

Walcott wasn't essential at the start either.

The Captain Poll asks 'Who is the best captain this week'. I've always wondered,do people vote for the person they think is the best captain in isolation to their team (which I assume is the purpose) or in terms of who they have and they are captaining?

In any event,it's a strange week for captains imo. I have a feeling that Everton will turn up for one of their customary big home games, and while I think City should win,Aguero will be limited to a goal. If he scores and they win by a tight margin you're looking at a nice haul (especially in the points barren Wk1-2) of 16-18 as (C).

This week however is a great week to 'gamble' on the (C) imo. It's hardly a plum fixture for Aguero and I think options such as Sanchez/Rooney and even Payet offer potentially higher returns. Having watched Gomez struggle for Liverpool the other night,I think Sanchez could run riot and I certainly fancy Arsenal to put a couple past Liverpool at home. Rooney and flavour of the week Memphis have what we would generally consider a plum fixture in Newcastle at home. The proviso with this however is that Rooney is bang out of form and Memphis has scored two great goals against a godawful team in Brugge.

Sanchez is the best (C) for me,followed closely by Rooney/Memphis. Aguero is the safe option,no doubt about that, but his returns have a ceiling for me this week, where the other boys are only limited by their own form. I've got a sneaking suspicion that even if a goal goes in off his over-sized arse,Rooney is going to help himself to a couple of goals Saturday lunchtime.

Sanchez had a slow start last year, getting used to the pace and physicality of the PL. This could be similar. Plus, Jose seems to have gone a bit crazy in these early days, so who knows how he'll play it.

then weeks 5-8 Sanchez got 4 double digit hauls...

I agree that picking him from the off may not be the best move, but surely he'll be a stud given how the Chelsea system suits him. He's so underrated, and very similar to Hazard, only with more experience - and trophy of course.

Not sure how fast he adapt to PL. Many Spanish players failed to adapt, especially those older players.

Soldado, Morientes, Negredo, just to name a few.

Those managed to adapt are younger players if you realize:
          Torres, Costa, Alonso

          Or with PL experience before:
          Fabregas

        What are you talking about?

They may take some time (maybe a onth or two), but what history tells us about Silva, Torres, Michu, Cazorla, Azpi, DDG, Adrian, Costa, etc.? When there's quality, it's only a matter of time.

Younger Spanish players tend to adapt to PL easier compare to those Spanish players who arrived at older age.

Well I think it dpeends on many factors - team style of play, trust of manager, player's on and off the field issue.

Luis Garcia went to Liverpool at age 26 and did fairly well. But then there's Riera too.

Not Spanish, I always think Pires coming to Arsenal at age 28 is a perfect example of how age is only numbers when it comes to moving to another League 😉

Those Spanish players from La Liga with no prior experience in PL, if they first arrived to PL at older age, they tend to struggle in PL. 26 seems to be a border line, Pires is not Spanish. All your Spanish players you mentioned arrived at PL at their younger age.

Pedro is Spanish and is already 28, I am not sure whether he is still flexible enough to adapt to PL.

Fair point dude, I just think Pedro will adapt (although not that quickly) and prove to be a hit.

Pedro is a major step down in quality from Sanchez, and won't have a team built around him as Sanchez had , and has more competition for a starting place. I'd be surprised if he justifies 9.5.

More competition for a starting place? Come on. He left Barca for regular playing time, Cuadrado is leaving, and surely he's leading the pack with Oscar and Willian.
