I’m having humble pie for breakfast.

A thick crust and generous filling, it’s not my preferred Saturday morning bacon sarnie but I’m tucking it away hungrily, nonetheless.

Last season I realised that this was the secret: when Fantasy Football rubs your nose in your mistakes, you’ve got to own up.

After opening the door for a player to punish me post-Wildcard in last week’s Preamble, Callum Wilson duly obliged with an unexpected hat-trick and maximum bonus return.

I knew it was coming. The important thing now was to act accordingly.

Having sold on Wilson with the Wildcard, I could have shown the usual stubborn attitude and convinced myself that my plans remained valid. That I knew best.

According to Wildcard blueprint v23 I should have been bringing Matt Ritchie in for Marc Albrighton this morning, benching Troy Deeney for his likely spell of spectating at the Etihad but reserving him as my budget striker.

Instead, I had to admit the error, forgive Callum for embarrassing me and snap him up before his price rose back to 5.5.

That could be another mistake. Ritchie may take his turn to run riot and Deeney may even come good in weeks to come; I had to ignore those fears. I also had to banish concerns of the template team forming and drown out the nagging “chasing points” argument in my head.

When a 5.4 striker demonstrates the ability to score a hat-trick, you don’t hesitate and cling to a plan.

I’d fancied Wilson as a prospect from the get-go but those beliefs were abandoned amongst the noise of the Wildcard scramble. Despite the pain of witnessing last weekend’s points haul, I can justify going back for Wilson and swallow some pride.

Above all, I fear that, if Wilson notches against Leicester, we’re going to be looking at a relentless bandwagon over the break and that would make any future portion of humble pie a lot less palatable.

I can’t risk that. I need that whiff of fried rashers to help me wake from the inevitable international slumber.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Walcott going to show everyone today that in FPL you have to show a bit of patience.

Not feeling it...yeah if he´s bought into the whole working hard thing...but if he comes on as ¨Lazy Theo¨ you can forget about it.

Has to play him at Striker...his utter lack of work-rate is impossible to hide otherwise...

Carrying on with the sentiment of previous posts:

There is a flaw in deciding the player positions in FPL:

By FPL logic like Pedro , if Messi/Neymar comes to England , they ought to be classified as a midfielder as well

Son is predominantly a Left Midfielder , yet classified as a forward

I think they are mixing up the 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1.. the 3 in the former are Forwards , but the 3 in the latter are midfielders

      They are not that bright.

Suarez as Forward (Liverpool), if he comes back to Liverpool he would be classified as Midfielder.

It's a design flaw in this season's game that they moved the deadline imo. Those of us who couldn't be around for the deadline now missed an opportunity to transfer Walcott in because team news were out before. Some who were around actually made the transfer and might now benefit from it.

From what I could see it didn't go down at 11:45 either, could still see my team after a refresh at 11:46.

I suppose my clock might not be right but at 11:30 it was always down before

100% agree. in general a big part of the game is guessing lineups. i also dont like the midweek deadlines in past seasons. i'd have all deadlines at least 1 hour 15mins before the first kickoff

Personally, I think transferring in a player who we know is never going to get consistent games just because he's playing one game up front and we can adjust to it is utter madness. You're just risking a huge uncertainty of starts for what is essentially one game. Giroud will be back in now time.

You may be right, but I don't think it affects my general point. I don't think you should give players the chance to benefit from being online at a certain set time.

You're not wrong. Should have mentioned I agree with that before mouthing off really. Completely depends on availability and the deadline being at 11:30 allowed no one to have that option which made it more of a level playing field. I agree.

How could you possibly read into the contract situation too much...?

think about it...it was the total theme; Wenger rightfully didn´t think he deserved that level (I still don´t think he does). And the point was in a NBA contract year kind of way he pulls goals out of his ass...despite being riddled with bad habits on the pitch.

I think people saying that the only reason Walcott started at the end of the season was the contract situation are wrong.
Not saying Walcott is lazy or a better striker than Giroud but Wenger wouldn't have started Walcott for purely contract reasons.

I wanted to get people's thoughts on the 'Bench Boost' chip. I've seen a lot of comments about saving it for a DGW, but I'm not sure I agree with the rationale for this.

Presumably on a DGW you're not going to leave a DGW player on he bench anyway, negating the impact of the chip. In fact sometimes DGW for some players might have blanks, which makes it even less useful.

It's also pretty likely that DGW's will be prime targets for the other chips. So first DGW that comes along, people are going to pile in to the 'Triple Captain' chip. Second DGW people will no doubt engineer their front 8's to make the 'All Out Attack' chip a good option. So you're already down to probably needing a 3rd DGW befor the 'Bench Boost' chip comes into play.

      And what really makes a difference to how useful that chip is? Clearly, how good your bench players are. This early in the season I, along with most others, are still figuring out who the essential players are going to be (Aguero and Mahrez aside). So actually my bench is still reasonably strong at this stage. This game week my bench is as follows;

McCarthy (che), Richards (SUN), Shaw (swa), Payet (liv)

I would expect all of them to play a full 90mins this week and actually there's a reasonably chance that Richards or Shaw or Payet could come up with some reasonable points.

Wind the clock forward a few weeks and Speroni will be fit, so McCarthy probably won't play. Payet will probably be downgraded to somebody like Westwood to accommodate upgrading Depay or Coutinho to Pedro/Silva/Hazard.

Also Shaw won't often sit on my bench and Richards may never have a better chance to get a clean sheet.

So as far as I'm concerned, my bench is never going to look better than it does this week. So I've taken the plunge and played the 'Bench Boost' chip.

I'm lucky enough to have had a great start to the season (177 pts, rank 15k). But I want to keep being proactive and think that this is the time to go for it.

      Fingers crossed.

I still think it's better for a DGW personally

Let's say you have 11 DGW players for argument sake, that's 22 players effectively. Now let's say your bench players for the DGW also have good fixtures; not only would you feel horrible benching them but you might even considering making one (c) if it had been a single gameweek.

So that effectively is 26 players from a DGW (22 + 4 on the bench)

If they average 2 points each you're looking at around 52 just for playing, excluding (c) points and any goals/ assists/ clean sheets.

        1. ironmike31
          • 14 Years

I think 11 DGW players is incredibly unlikely. Even with a Wildcard, you'd probably ruin your team.

Not to mention you can't wildcard and play bench boost in the same week.

When you want to get the best players for DGW, most people will inevitably sacrifice their bench players to accommodate the best 11 they can field.

11 DGW players and a reasonable bench just isn't going to happen, in my opinion.

I think I'll flip a coin on Silva vs. Mahrez as captain.

Silva has better stats, but Mahrez is on some really great form

last time I didn't have him he smashed Sunderland, on the other hand when RVP's price skyrocketed went without him and worked out well.

If anyone's interested and on a wildcard, I've been tinkering around with the best team (in terms of points over next 6 weeks) on RMT and this is what I've found:

      http://rate-my-team.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/team/?clear=1&sub1=222&a…

Personally, I would go for Darmian instead of Smalling to free up some cash to potentially change one of the cheapies if needed. Looking forward Hazard to Sanchez (c) is an interesting option for gw5.

      Myhill
      Kolarov - Gomez - Muniesa
      Sanchez - Silva - Pedro - Mahrez
      Aguero - Benteke - Wilson

      McCarthy - Westwood - Targett - Nyom

      Nothing in the bank.

Just seen Son added to the game as a forward 8 million and Toivonen for Sunderland as a midfielder at 6.5 both could be decent options.

Son being a forward destroys him for me. Sun dont score enough goals and I'd rather have Lens thne Toivonen anyway.

Already getting destroyed by my Aunt and now she may benefit from blindly keeping Walcott...

Starts with premium GKs, clocked onto double Citeh defence, captaining defenders.

Who am I kidding, she plays the game better than most here!
