Our Friday pre-Gameweek members article comes around again, as we focus on the main captaincy contenders in accordance with our Captain Poll. We take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez (33%) sits atop the summit of our Captain Poll by virtue of his explosive returns in the past three Gameweeks – the Chilean forward has accrued six goals and 46 points over that stretch. Next on Arsenal’s agenda is a home tie against an Everton outfit that has only conceded in one of their road ties this campaign. Nonetheless, they’ll do well to rebuff the advances of a Gunners attack that’s amassed 11 goals in their previous trio of outings. Elsewhere in the north Londoners’ camp, Mesut Ozil (1%) also features in the top 10, having already matched his assist haul (six) from last season.

Jamie Vardy has attracted 29% of the votes in light of his eight goals in six starts. Leicester’s red-hot frontman only failed to deliver attacking returns on one occasion this campaign, underlining the consistency of his returns. Following his impactful second-half showing against Southampton, just under 5% of our voters expect Riyad Mahrez to deliver the goods in the Foxes’ home clash against Crystal Palace. Leicester racked up 10 goals in their previous four encounters at the King Power Stadium, which bodes well for the Eagles’ visit. Visiting boss Alan Pardew reckons we should “expect to see some goals” in this clash, which suits owners of the Leicester pair just fine.

Georginio Wijnaldum and Diego Costa (both 3%) look real differentials for the armband this week. The former boasts five strikes and one assist in three appearances, following his four-goal frenzy last time out, and faces a trip to a Sunderland side that’s yet to record a clean sheet this term. The latter, meanwhile, notched a goal and an assist on his return from suspension and will fancy his chances of scoring away to West Ham, given that the Irons conceded eight goals in their last four home match-ups.

Despite failing to register a single shot at home to Stoke City last Gameweek, Andew Ayew (2%) – who’s carded one goal in five outings – is the sixth most popular captaincy pick. This is a doubtless a reflection of the fact that Swansea City face a trip to Aston Villa, who are without a win on home soil.

Kevin De Bruyne has tallied three goals and as many assists in his previous four league starts but enjoys just 2% of the vote ahead of the Manchester derby. The fact that hosts Manchester United have conceded just one goal at home this term clearly serves as deterrent, although the corresponding fixture has played witness to nine goals in the last two years.

Harry Kane (1%) – who’s drawn blanks in eight of his nine starts – will look to kick-start his campaign when Tottenham Hotspur travel to Bournemouth on Sunday. The Cherries shipped eight goals in their last three fixtures, which also brings Christian Eriksen (two goals and a pair of assists in four) into contention with a 1% backing.

I'd love to be part of team Bhutan! I'm from Bulgaria though, but I guess the names are close enough.

This is my first year of FPL but so far I'm rank 7706 so I guess I'm doing alright. Link in my profile.

the Swiss team will probably create a fake Qatar team, fake FPL teams, fake FFS accounts, rig their draw and create random FIFFSA double GWs during Christmas.

Looking at Ozil (got 2x Ars already) or Payet (not convinced with fixtures)

I was surprised to see them not feature in the form attack table. (Though they are 2nd in league for shots on target in last 4 which this table doesn't show)

        Question about picking mis-matches:

Which of these match ups would you prefer to back for e.g your captaincy choice?

        A) Team top of the form attack tables Vs 2nd worst defence in the league
        B) Team 2nd top of the form attack Vs Worst defence in the league

Put another way do you place more stock in a form attack continuing to prosper, or an out of form defence continuing to leak?

2nd in my mini league expect bothe the team above me to captain Sanchez while neither even has Vardy.

A: Captain Vardy, a differential doubled if he has a good week
B: Captain Sanchez, don't risk falling behind just have Vardyvis differential enough

I'm in the same situation. My team looks better than his, so by captaining Sanchez I minimize the risk of him to increase his lead. I fare that Pardew comes to Leicester with a counter attacking game plan, which may lead to few goals in that match. But on the contrary, I expect Everton to tighten up their defense and play their high-intensity football. Tough call!

Should I play Martial or Pelle? My other striker is Vardy, and midfield of Mahrez, Sanchez, Cabaye, KDB and Payet, so thinking of 3 5 2.

Really stuck on this one so would appreciate some help...

This actually makes me more confident in captaining Sanchez. Surely Wenger will be aware of this & will resist resting Sanchez.

Well, even if Sanchez starts or doesn't start...fact remains Everton are pretty tight away from home.

I'm afraid of Everton playing defensive and camping in their own half, can easily see a 1-0 or 0-0 in that game

Kind of weird they conceded two against West Brom and kept clean sheets against Spurs , Swansea and Southampton

Just shows they shut up shop against the better attacking teams. More worries!

Ozil and Payet stats pretty similar...(amazing number of chances created!) - but given I think Arsenal will generally score more goals than West Ham over the medium term, should i get Ozil....OR should i go with Payet as he's involved with most goals WH do score?

Just get payet, you're overthinking this

I prefer Payet for that reason

West Ham score less but Payet is more involved. It's a smaller pie, but a much bigger slice

Same here. Looking to bring Özil for Payet in next 2gws.

Bought Payet for 8.0 so no big loss for me.

Also gives you an Arsenal differential to benefit from Arsenal attack since Sanchez is now template.

Payet is the top scoring player in the game so it's payet or both.

Sub hoolhan. His minutes are all over the place.

Defensively I'd play bellerin, alderwerield, kolarov. Nice team BTW.
