With the third international break of the season upon us, we’re afforded time to assess the leading contenders in the Fantasy Football Scout leagues across a variety of games. With leagues in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ultimate Fantasy Premier League,Sky Sports and Sun Dream Team, there’s plenty to catch up on.

FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

Jon Mjelde surged to the top of our Scout League – and 20th in the overall rankings – by way of a 64-point haul this Gameweek. His decision to captain Romelu Lukaku paid dividends, while Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane also found the target. Although all four of Jon’s midfielders drew blanks, clean sheets from David de Gea, Virgil van Dijk and Aleksandar Kolarov bolstered his score.

Despite posting 60 points (15 above the average), Mark Kalafatas was displaced from the top spot following the last round of fixtures. The 29th-ranked manager opted for a 3-5-2 set-up, deploying Vardy and Lukaku as his strike partnership. Manuel Lanzini (1% ownership) proved to an excellent differential, while Mesut Ozil carded a handy eight points.

Samuel Slennet – who sat at the summit when we last penned a leagues round-up – sits in third place by virtue of a 57-point Gameweek. Samuel was rewarded for handing Vardy the skipper’s armband and also profited from Jack Butland’s and Daryl Janmaat’s shut-out points.

Amassing 72 points, Chris Rigden propelled himself into fourth place. A back four that included the likes of Butland and Scott Dann combined for 31 points. In the attacking positions, Ozil, Lukaku and Vardy (captain) brought home the bacon.

Rounding off the top five, Panna Fricker (65 points) also excelled on the defensive front after plumping for double Manchester City coverage (Bacary Sagna and Kolarov). Captain Harry Kane and Vardy complemented her defensive returns.

We’re pleased to say we sit in top spot in the League of Leagues as we look to defend our title for another season. To join this league use the code: 600-520

FPL MEMBERS SCOUT LEAGUE

Jon Mjelde is also the frontrunner in the Members League and boasts a 34-point lead at the top of the leaderboard.

Andrew Dougan retained his second spot from last Gameweek with a tally of 48 points. Although his Alexis Sanchez captaincy failed to hit the mark, Vardy, Lukaku, Butland and Kolarov came up trumps.

Third-place Marsel Levi was left frustrated by Wilfried Bony’s early withdrawal but still managed to accrue 50 points. Beyond a Vardy captaincy, Kolarov, Ozil and De Gea were his key performers.

The curiously named Zunker 1 will have some tinkering to do in the wake of injuries to Mamadou Sakho and Dimitri Payet. Nonetheless, they notched a respectable 48 points, owing to a Lukaku captaincy and solid returns from the likes of Vardy and Marcos Rojo.

Trev Grant edged into the top five after picking up 49 points. Owning Payet and Bony thwarted his progress, but a captained Vardy, Kolarov and Chris Smalling rescued his Gameweek.

ULTIMATE FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

Panna Fricker’s success extends to Ultimate Fantasy Premier League ladder, where she sits in the gold-medal berth. A 60-point Gameweek elevated her to a total score of 932 – good enough for second in the overall rankings.

John Donnelly is hot on the heels of Panna with 928 points, having relinquished the top spot due to a disappointing 30-point haul. Ryan Evans slipped into third position with a score of 920, despite beating the 43-point average by five points.

Michael Wong ended this Gameweek on 915 points after tallying 63 points – no one in the top 50 surpassed that total on the weekend. Dean Howard retains a place in the top five but is now five points adrift (910) of Michael Wong.

To join this league, use the code: 1258-516.

SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL

Alan Wood (826 points) has taken a commanding lead at the peak of the Scout League, with Mark William (792) 34 points back in second place. Jeff Payne (783) is clinging onto third by a one-point margin yet has chalked up five more goals than Alan Wood.

We currently sits in fourth spot in the league of leagues as we look to defend our crown. To join this league use the league name: FFScout and the code: 8009000

SUN DREAM TEAM

Jeff Payne (776 points) enjoys a 10-point lead at the top of the table, with Chris Smalling (93) tallying the most points among his 11-man squad. He’s profited greatly from a back five comprised entirely of Manchester United defenders, although there’s work to be done with injuries to Luke Shaw and Payet.

David O Byrne (766 points) fronts the chasing pack. Amassing 103 points, Graziano Pelle has been his star man, while Alexis Sanchez’s 87 points have also been impactful. A 23-point gap between him and Tony H. (743) has opened up, with the latter harvesting 187 points from his two-man strike partnership (Harry Kane and Pelle).

Nigel Dodds (739) has loaded up with seven of Louis van Gaal’s troops, including Wayne Rooney (104 points). He’s fending off the challenge from Tim Mongiat (738), who’s just one point adrift of fourth place and also possesses a team with a distinct Man United flavour.

What are you looking to do with Payet? I was quite hindered by price on this one if I wanted to leave cash available for Aguero that would have become more difficult once the price changes went through. I fully admit I did not do a big analysis on Surman just a qucik scan of the possibles at 4.4 or less.

I have a budget of up to 5.6m or 7.3m for a replacement depending on which forward I want to shift for Agüero. My search is in its early days.

Regarding the stats conversation on the last page, statistical analysis has been in English football a little longer than some were suggesting. And did you know Big Sam was one of the early adopters?

    1. Jafalad
      • 15 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

Didn't the English FA conduct a stats survey in the late 80s and they discovered stuff like teams that had 10 shots on target in a game never lost?

I think they also discovered that most goals were scored with 5 passes or less.

      1. Diva
        • 11 Years

There was some analysis in the 80s (or adopted in the 80s) which brought about long ball football I believe. The idea being, if I recall correctly, to get the ball up front as quickly as possible because most goals were scored after only a small number of passes.

^ Charles Reep in the 50s and essentially sent England head first into Route One football as he couldn't discern cause from correlation.

When you think about it, gegenpress might produce the same effect - if a team is winning the ball close to the opponent's area they are unlikely to need as many passes to create a goal scoring opportunity on many occasions. Same correlation maybe, but a different cause.

Yep, it feels like a lot of critical thinking was missing or misused around these findings.

    2.
      • 12 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

Oh God, if you want to look at the history in full, Charles Reep started it in the 50s and abused stats and sent English football into the dark ages. Also most stuff, before the emergence of OPTA, can largely be covered by the umbrella of sports science rather specific football analytics.

        • 11 Years

You'd class Big Sam's work on ball landing positions etc as more sports science than analytics then?

thanks Diva, good read. I tend to underestimate ProZone as they have much less in the public domain. I will say that there are some good bits there from Allardyce but then also a fair bit of sports science especially this rather shitty bit that panders to the English hard work over technical ability outlook:

"They also discovered that they would have an 80 percent chance of not losing if the players outworked their opposition by covering more distance at speeds above 5.5m/s."

With Vardy it's fixtures and the side he plays for. Leicester aren't finishing in the top 5 so expect some declining output. Ighalo plays for a side that scores few goals. Anyone that think is he will continue to be involved in almost every goal they score is deluded.

Kane to Vardy does give the option to upgrade midfield.

Also downgrade Sanchez to Silva gives plenty more options. Hmm

      Hennessey/McCarthy
Bellerin/Moreno/Rose/Williams/Richards (would prefer not to have the last two)
      Mane/Ozil/Sanchez/Mahrez/4.4 or less
      Kane/Lukaku/Aguero

With 12 points total in hits, I can get this by GW15:

      Butland (McCarthy)
      Kolarov - Bellerin - Moreno - Ward - Richards
      Sanchez - Ozil - Wijnaldum - Mahrez - Surman
      Kun - Kane - Lukaku

The weakpoint in that team is obviously Wijnaldum, but other than that I'd be very happy with that.

It is extremely difficult to have a balance, but there are possibilities

      Gomes - Hennessey
      Bellerin - VVD - Rose - Moreno - Simpson
      Sanchez - Ozil - Mahrez - Wijnaldum - Gosling (or Tadic - Surman )
      Aguero - Kane - Lukaku

For all the Ozil love, I just want to chuck it out there that Fabregas only got 165 points last season with his 3 goals and 19 assists while Hazard got 233 points with 14 goals and 10 assists. That's a 68 point difference for only being involved in 2 more goals. Goals are king in midfield.

Yeah that's a good post. But you must consider that Hazard was an absolute BAP king last season, often picking up 2-3 bonus when he only grabbed an assist.

That is true but also something Ozil has proved hew is not. Especially as in the midfiled the bonus point system loves take-ons and shots on targets, two things Ozil avoids like the plague.

Also Arsenal as a team have more goals in them than Chelsea. So as long as they keep scoring 2,3,4 a game expect Ozil to be involved in at least one of them as he's their most creative player. also Ozil plays more advance than Fab. I think comparing Ozil to Silva would be more justifiable.

Looking at it again, maybe I am being a bit harsh, but my general feeling is mids need to score at least 6 and preferably double digit goals to be viable in the premium range, do you think Ozil has that?

No I dont think he has 10 goals in him but wouldn't bet against it, he's world class and if not more should chip in with 7-8 goals. But I have no doubt if he plays full season, he can create a new assist record in PL and maybe score 10 or more goals who knows.

I think Arsenal are title contenders this year and having their #10 in my team gives sense of security.

Ozil is currently more involved in the Arsenal team than Fabregas was last season, statistically speaking. He'll rack up more assists than Fab this season I reckon, more goals too by a less significant number though.

Also, bonus points are a big factor, and I disagree with your point to NickOfOz, Ozil actually has the most amount of bonus points in the entire Arsenal team right now, and he only hit form around GW7 or so.

As far as recent talk on records for Vardy, Its fair to say that when Vardy finally loses/completes his consecutive matches goal scoring record, he and his team mates will try helping him for Golden boot in EPL...Its safe to say Mahrez may have permamnently lost his spot kicking duties as Vardy already has 12 goals and can be strong golden boot candidate if he gets to 20 goals...If his team mates can help him for consecutive goals record, Golden boot which is much more prestigious can be taken for granted for assistance by them

That's if he gets another penalty before the run is over. As soon as it's over Mahrez could be back in business.

I'm not sure players start thinking about golden boot this early on - although Vardy does have a great platform to continue.

Its about this season...that lad is clearly a late bloomer and his hardwork is showing this year...too early or not, he will be among top 3 gioal scorers this season end just like kane was last season when everyone underestimated him too...And Vardy is not like Gomis of early season...Vardy has very strong underlying stats even now! Consistent with the top players in the game

you don't know that. Plenty of players go through purple patches and tail off. I wouldn't put money on him to be in the top 3 scorers just yet. There's also no guarantee that Leicester will keep up this form, and if they don't, then Vardy will suffer.

I knew some people will say its too early to talk about top scorers...But i think Vardy is already 5-6 goals ahead of his nearest rival and I feel it will all come down between him/Kun and one Kane or Lukaku depending on which team tries for 4th UCL spot...He is from Leicester does not mean we should underestimate them...Believe me I did that at start of season and I suffered

Everyone's making a big fuss about Mahrez losing penalties.. well he was not on them last season and took just one this season in the EPL(And missed in the Carling cup). It's not like a Lampard/Gerrard giving up penalties. Would not be surprised in the least if he loses them to their on for Golden boot striker Vardy who has already scored 2 penalties and is in the driving seat to take the next one. Why take Vardy of em at all?
And btw Vardy is playing fantastic.. Watch every Leicester game and it's been all about him the past 4 weeks while Mahrez looked poor behind the striker and has been thrown out onto the wing(would not be surprised if this is now a permanent occurence). Would keep Vardy over Mahrez if i had to choose between the two and not even considering taking Vardy out for anyone in the near future

      1. pompeyfan
        • 16 Years

Maybe Mahrez is better at pens. This is a team game afterall so what is best for the team should happen. Winning games is more important! I hate all this individual nonsense.

He was not near them when i used to watch Leicester in the championship(Nugent) .. Ranieri probably recognised Mahrez's ability when he joined and wanted to show how confiedent he was in his abilities and gave him penalties. tbh Vardy will probably just let Mahrez takes penos after his record mumbo jumbo is done with in order to make up for Mahrez giving up his peno duties for this period for him. All about team spirit and mutual respect at Leicester

Yeah definitely agree with the team spirit point.

Nugent used to be great at pens too by the way. And fwiw I would be more confident of Mahrez scoring a pen to save my life than Vardy - especially if Vardy is going to just keep smashing them!

Mahrez has taken two penalties in the EPL this season, GW1 v Sunderland (scored) and GW5 (or 6) against Stoke (scored). Both were when Vardy was on the pitch.

I think it's fairly clear Mahrez is no. 1 penalty taker, with Vardy taking them while his record is going/ when Mahrez is off the pitch

Doesn't need to be "due", but how likely is it that a team that passes so much time in attack, takes so many shots, makes so many deep passes and dribbles, (they're no. 1 in at least 2-3 of these, no. 2 in rest) just _doesn't_ get penalties? By all odds, they should be getting more penalties than average.

I don't really see the appeal since most of us would already have an Arsenal defender + Sanchez, so there's just 1 precious spot left, and Ozil's only 0.8 more expensive. Sure, there's Aguero now and everyone's on a tight budget, but I think Ozil, as an FPL option, is superior enough to warrant that 0.8m.

    Lanzini getting some knockers, so here are the points in his favour;

-Highest PPG of all midfielders 5.6M and under
-3 goals, 2 assists, 8 bps in under 700 minutes of football
-Assumes set piece responsibility now Payet injured, increasing points potential

I'm personally not going that way this week because I see three fixtures unlikely to provide much in the way of attacking returns, but when things get a bit better I think he will prove to be an excellent option (particularly over Xmas to beef up the fifth mid)

Problems: 1) West Ham will be a much worse team without Payet, 2) fixtures aren't great, 3) he's too expensive to be a fifth mid but not established enough as a pick to warrant a fourth mid spot.

Worth keeping an eye on though. If he performs then he'll still be a bargain as a fourth mid in a few weeks when their fixtures clear. That's a big if though.

        1. Agree. Greater set piece involvement, particularly with big Andy, is probably full mitigation of that tho.

        2. Well I called that myself, and it's why I'm not selecting him myself.

        3. That's a matter of taste. I like a strong 8 and 5.3 isn't too much for me. Some will opt for a stronger fifth than they normally would over Xmas also.

I'm not going there now, but I've already been keeping an eye on him and he's playing very nicely in general and takes a very good set piece. I don't think it's as big an if as you. Let's hope. Diversity is good

What to do with these guys?

    de Gea Hennessey
Kolarov Bellerín Moreno van Dijk Simpson
Surman De Bruyne Sánchez Payet Mané
    Pellè Kane Vardy

2 FT, £0.6m in the bank.

    a) downgrade someone so Payet can become Ozil
    b) get a 7m or so mid
    c) something else

    Cheers

Could work. What about Walcott or Willian as punts?

                  Definitely not Willian atm.

Unfortunately with Walcott/Giroud rotation I wouldn't consider either of them. If Wenger played them both it would be great. That and he's injured atm

Very nice except agree midfield is a bit weak.

Nice to see Aguero back in a team.

A big haul from one of the big hitters could hurt you in midfield, but it looks good.

            *obligatory "needs more Firmino" *

I'm considering that to be covered by having the big hitters in attack

              Loool at Firmino!

Looks like a great team, I'd consider Coutinho instead of Toure myself (Liverpool coverage and he's in the goals), but it looks solid either way.

Thanks Cafu. Coutinho is someone I'm considering but I'm not entirely convinced by his play, though there has been a marked improvement since Klopp took over

Also worth considering Mane, hasn't been in the goals recently but I think he's electric and could well be back in them again soon.

I'll be honest, Sanchez is my main concern, so I'll tinker around to see other possibilites

          I have a question.

What is the use of a p'aying bench during Christmas if you cant see line ups before Deadline?

            πŸ˜†

Your other players would be randomly rested.
Lineups has nothing to do with it.

Sorry was out for a while.

Yes, that is a risk but that is ok, your attackers can get points with cameos. The only thing we want to safeguard against, is a no-show 0 points.
