It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Mesut Ozil leads the field with 20% of the vote this Gameweek, having delivered two goals and nine assists in his last eight outings. In the absence of Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla, more emphasis will be on the 9.3-priced German to exert his influence during Arsenal’s home tie against Sunderland. The Gunners’ attacking unit will be emboldened in the knowledge that no team has conceded more away goals (18) than the Black Cats.

Romelu Lukaku has netted five goals in four league ties and graced the scoresheet in Everton’s midweek League Cup clash, encouraging 16% of voters to hand him the captain’s armband. The Toffees’ home tie against Crystal Palace looks favourable on paper, yet the Eagles boast the second-best defensive record away from home (five goals conceded).

City’s Kevin De Bruyne attracted an 9% backing by virtue of three goals and as many assists in his last two outings across all competitions – this afternoon’s news that Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of the trip to the Britannia will strengthen the Belgian’s appeal for some.

Notwithstanding his six consecutive blanks, Eden Hazard (8%) still finds a place in our top five. The former Lille winger turned out solid performances in his previous two league starts and now enjoys a home encounter against Bournemouth. Although the Cherries have offered more attacking threat of late, no team has surrendered more big chances (22) in road fixtures.

Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo (5%) go stride for stride in the Captain Poll. Pitted against a Swansea City defence that conceded eight goals in their last four home ties, Vardy could well extend his scoring streak to 12 matches. As for Ighalo, he’ll look to profit from a Norwich City back line that ranks top for shots inside the box conceded (85) in road fixtures. Harry Kane (4%) was unable to breach Chelsea’s resilient defence last time out but should have more joy against West Bromwich Albion, given that they chart top for home goals conceded (13).

Doubtless Philippe Coutinho – who scooped 4% of the vote – would place higher in our Captain Poll if he hadn’t been nursing a hamstring injury over the last week or so. The ex-Inter Milan starlet recorded four goals and one assist in his last three starts but looks likely to miss the Newcastle encounter, judging by Jurgen Klopp’s comments this afternoon.

I vowed never to touch Sturridge after he trolled me last season. But his and Liverpool's performance mid-week was absolutely sublime, I think he may be worth it.

The question is: the same as which team? The one that he fielded on Wednesday or the same he fielded against Swansea? Because I highly dobut Randall and Bogdan will play.

I am getting Stur for Aguero -4 and forgetting about Aguero for several weeks. Risky but could pay off as Newcastle are woeful. Agree with the below. 1 week too early for Walcott but will be looking to drop Mane for him next week.

Got issues this week with Begovic. Coutinho and Aguero (and not sure if Lingaard plays?).

    0.2 itb and one FT

    A. Do nothing. (Play Dier has fourth defender)
    B. Begovic to Courtious (Play dier as fourth defender)
    C. Aguero to Sturridge / Kane
    D. B plus C for a hit

    Thanks

There is a template team this year? i think this year there is less template players than usual (at least at this time). There is much more options giving returns and I'm seeing more different teams (except 4/5 players).

Mane (C), for the following reasons:

    - Villa are very poor at the moment and Ronald will want a positive reaction after the 1-6 result
    - I think Stoke may shut out City, and Palace will keep it tight against Lukaku & Co.
    - Big Sam is getting the Sunderland defence organized; Arsenal have injuries and a key Euro tie coming up
    - I don't have any Liverpool players...

It's a wide open week for captaincy picks

How about Lukaku? You surely have him and Everton and Lukaku are in great form, unlike Southampton

I think Pardew will park the bus on Monday night.

Think you could be right. And this is someone who tinkered with selling him at the start of the week.

Stoke won't keep a cs but won't lose heavily.

Captaining Mane could work out (although he did nothing for me over the 5 gw's in which I owned, him, some of those had weak opponents), but it would not be playing the percentages to do so.

Blanked the two previous times I gave him the armband, but I'm still tempted

      *high five*

Yep, Villa's atrocious form (lost 9 out of last 10) and the lack of a standout alternative mean I'm gonna go for it too. When it comes to captaincy I'm the ultimate dullard, but this makes sense to me - hoping it might be a Charlie Austin moment.
