We call upon a trio of midfielders this morning ahead of Boxing Day’s ten fixtures. Liverpool’s fit-again captain is joined by Chelsea and Villa’s playmakers as all three prepare for home comforts.

Jordan Veretout

Unfavoured during Tim Sherwood’s ill-fated reign at Villa Park, Jordan Veretout (5.6) has been afforded a new lease of life under Remi Garde, starting and finishing Aston Villa’s last six league ties. Although the West Midlands club struggled to generate any attacking rhythm during that period, Veretout still benefitted from a more advanced midfield berth by providing an assist in three of the last four Gameweeks.

During that period, Veretout ranked joint-fourth for key passes (11) – tallying as many as Mesut Ozil. Furthermore, the former France U21 international accrued more successful crosses (12) than any player around the league across that stretch, illuminating his quality in the final third. Granted, five attempts and zero shots inside the box since Gameweek 14 exposes his lack of goal threat, but his seven-goal haul with Nantes last term suggests there’s more to come in that department.

Next on the agenda for the Villains is a home tie against West Ham United. Although the Irons have recorded three successive clean sheets, they conceded more shots inside the box (33) than any side over that run, while no team tallied more shots on target than Villa (seven) in the last round of fixtures. With Norwich, Sunderland and Palace to follow, Veretout has the schedule to profit over the festive period.

Jordan Henderson

Jordan Henderson’s (6.5) return from injury has furnished us with an alternate route into Liverpool’s attack beyond Philippe Coutinho. In his first start following a protracted layoff, the Sunderland academy product bagged a goal and an assist in a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion. There are question marks surrounding his position in the spot-kick hierarchy in light of James Milner’s recent success on that front, but the latter’s currently nursing a calf complaint, so we can safely assume that the Reds’ captain now takes precedence.

Only four midfielders have fashioned more attempts than Henderson (seven) since he returned to the starting XI, while he also ranked joint-fourth for shots on target (three). In terms of his creative output, the England international mustered four key passes and charted joint-sixth for passes in the final third (33).

In the wake of three disappointing results, Jurgen Klopp will demand a response from his players when Leicester City make the trip to Anfield on Saturday. Stifling the Foxes’ buoyant attack could an exercise in futility, but the home team are likely to enjoy their fair share of scoring opportunities, too – Claudio Ranieri’s troops have claimed just three clean sheets all season and place joint-fourth for big chances conceded (nine) over the last four Gameweeks.

Oscar

Chelsea’s 3-1 triumph over Sunderland last Gameweek hinted that Oscar (8.2) could be one of the key beneficiaries of Jose Mourinho’s dismissal. The Brazil international looked revitalised against the Black Cats and capped off his performance with a goal from the penalty spot – his first strike since the season opener at home to Swansea.

In the previous Gameweek, Oscar ranked joint-top among midfielders for attempts (five) and shots on target (two), while only Pedro (11) chalked up more penalty-box touches (seven). Despite clocking 629 fewer minutes than Hazard across the course of the campaign, Oscar has carded just one fewer attempt (21 compared to 22) and an equal volume of shots on target (seven).

If their display against the Wearsiders is anything to go by, Chelsea could propel themselves back into relevancy on the Fantasy scene in the coming weeks: the Blues ranked joint-top for shots inside the box (11), top for big chances (four) and joint-top for shots on target (seven). First up for Gus Hiddink’s charges is a home clash against a Watford outfit that have only secured clean sheets against Stoke and Sunderland while on their travels so far.

Need help with my front 8!

Mahrez (liv) KDB (SUN) Ozil (sun) Wijnaldum (EVE) Coutinho (LEI)
    Kane (NOR) Lukaku (new) Ighalo(che)

Would you do Kane -> Kun on a FT? And who should I bench? Currently on Coutinho.

Following up on Wild Rover's post on the flood warnings.

Does the heavy rain and presumably high wind speeds in Manchester and Liverpool affect your captain decision at all?

Which city is worse or most affected you reckon?

Heavy rains will affect these games no matter how look at it. They tend to be much sloppier and the less technical players suffer the most (normally defenders). Sticky, heavy jerseys, socks and cleats get drenched, rain in your face makes it hard to see. Playing in the rain is no joke.

So you're saying it should be good for attackers?

Not necessarily, you just tend to see more mistakes overall from the less technical players which happens to be the defenders on most squads

I can't imagine Sakho dealing with a very heavy and wet ball very well, for instance.

It affects attackers too because the weight of the ball changes so its easy to over hit a through ball for instance because it just flies down a wet pitch

It's going west to east, and rising north. By the time the games kick off, the Newcastle game should be the only one, according to the forecast, where it's still raining.

    Which of these...difficult to decide this gw, please share your view;

    A. Vardy and Barkley to Aguero and Alli for longer term, FTs. Play Aguero (SUN).
    B. Myhill to Hennessey (2nd keeper), play Barkley (new) or Vardy (liv). And do A probably next gw, especially if it turns out that Vardy not fully fit.
    C. Barkley to Yaya and play him this week (SUN).

Currently thinking of B...too much uncertainty about Kun's minutes, maybe plays just 15-20 mins? And 65 vs Leicester on Monday ? On the other hand, City might win Sunderland 5-1 at home....

    Your pick ?

    Thanks.

Newcastle seem to have improved over last few games ?

Plus Lukakaaaa is away as opposed to Harry who is home ?

Also, scout team selection doesn't have Kone starting. If this proves to be the case then it could hurt the Belgiums output.

Surprised to see so many going with Mahrez on a fairly tough away fixture. I'm personally undedided between Lukaku and Kane, sliding toward Lukaku with more consistency atm,

For those of you pondering captaincy, let me say that over the last 6 weeks Lukaku and Ighalo had 23 shots in the box. 10 more than the next best popular options.

On phone now so difficult to check but I personally like shots in the box as an indicator.

Someone can smash the post and it is off target. Dribble to the gk and it is in target.

    Hello guys,

who here has the best Captaincy record? 😉 We should keep record of that. 🙂 And what's your C pick this GW? 😉 My gut feeling has been letting me down lately. 😉 6/17 🙂

I'm pretty sure I have most of the right players in my team just always pick the no show one. 😉

Cheers guys and merry Christmas! 😉

Captaincy was terrible earlier in season but the last 5 or so weeks have been very good. Had Kane brace, Vardy goal+3bp, Ighalo brace, Vardy double assist. Kane blank amongst that lot though.

I'm doing Mahrez this week, paid off nicely last GW. Anyway, what's YOUR gut telling you?

      1. Hakuna Juan Mata
        • 10 Years

Liverpool been horrible lately and there CB's are injured, plus Mahrez is on fire

then there's Lukaku who's scored in all these games and there has been 12 goals in the 3-4 times New and Eve met

my gut says Mahrez but my mind says lukaku

      2. McQueen
        • 10 Years

Haha, my gut is telling me Mahrez. That surely is not a good sign for you unfortunately. I already captained Mahrez once and yes you can guess it was that time when he gave the ball to Vardy to take the penalty kick. 🙂

We should keep track who has the best C feeling among us users. 🙂

    @Jins

Olsson not nailed. Evans was playing CDM in Yacob's absence. Apparently Olsson might make way for him as Evans drops back to CB.

Not worth the risk IMO. I think McAuley is a safer bet due to Evans' poor history of injuries.

What do we reckon for clean sheets on Palace or Spurs. Currently on dier/toby defense with Ward first sub, or should I reduce the risk and play Ward over one of them?

Who would you ditch this week out of:

    A) Moreno
    B) VVD

Expect the masses to say VVD, but looking at LIV's fixtures, are there any clean sheets there?

No Skrtel and against LEI, sun, whu, ARS, MUN

Whereas VVD is playing in a better defensive team with WBA and WAT in the next 5.
