Leicester and Man City play out a goalless draw at the King Power in the penultimate match of the Gameweek. The Foxes have now drawn blanks in each of their last two, whilst for City, Sergio Aguero’s minutes continue to be managed by Manuel Pellegrini.

Foxes Hold Firm at the King Power

Leicester City delivered a positive response to their 1-0 defeat at Anfield, holding Manchester City to a goalless stalemate at the King Power Stadium. The Foxes have now recorded three clean sheets in their previous seven match-ups, conceding just five goals against Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool in the other four fixtures. Ally this with their schedule across the next four Gameweeks (BOU, tot, avl, STO) and their sub-4.5 defensive starters could make for profitable pick-ups.

Leicester’s second consecutive blank also marked the first time they’ve failed to net in 15 home encounters. The East Midlands outfit tallied the fifth-fewest attempts (37) and third-fewest shots inside the box (23) over the past four Gameweeks but that, in part, could be attributed to the fixture difficulty.

Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy mustered just seven attempts apiece during that period but will be relishing the prospect of facing two sides (Aston Villa and Bournemouth) that rank joint-second for goals conceded (34) this term. The latter’s owners will be relieved after he avoided another yellow card last night – Vardy remains on four bookings and has successfully navigated the Suspension Tightrope, with the limit extending to ten on New Year’s Day.

City’s Away Worries Continue

The Sky Blues’ stalemate at Leicester marked the fourth time in five road clashes that they’ve failed to register a goal. In fact, Manuel Pellegrini’s men haven’t won away from the Etihad since a victory over Crystal Palace in Gameweek 5. Certainly, nursing Sergio Aguero – who was afforded a 63-minute run-out this time around – back to full fitness and form will be key to rectifying that shortcoming as they gear up for a procession of favourable trips (wat, whu, sun, new) in the coming months. Having failed to play at home to Sunderland last weekend, Aguero looks likely to retain his starting berth for the upcoming trip to Watford.

After the match, Pellegrini insisted he will continue to limit Aguero’s pitch time until he’s back to full match sharpness:

“We know Kun needs three or four games to return his performance after an injury and I am sure we are going to see the best Kun in the second half of the season. I never talk about individual performances because we are a team. We know, because we know him and after all this year he needs two or three games to return to his normal performance. He needs these minutes. I don’t want him to play more than 65 or 67 minutes. It will be very useful to see the best Kun in the first round of the second half of the season.”

On a more positive note, Man City carded their first clean sheet in the absence of Vincent Kompany – who’s expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks following his injury setback. Head-to-heads against Crystal Palace (home) and West Ham United (away) harbour strong shut-out potential, but owners of Aleksandar Kolarov and Bacary Sagna will be wary of rotation, given that their respective counterparts are back in the mix.

If you are Ozil, or any player performing week in, week out, would you actually want a rest?

    1. Zizoulicious
      10 years, 10 months ago

Depends on the player. Some can recover quickly after games, others risk injury playing too many in a short space of time

I guess it depends on one's physical conditions . If one is mentally tired , a 1 week rest goes a long way.

IMO , Ozil will not get rotated fwiw.

      1. Zizoulicious
        10 years, 10 months ago

Yeah mentally as well some players would need a rest

      2. Nickofoz

Agree with this. It may be hard to continue that form if you are physically/mentally tired.

Wenger would be mad to rest Ozil though, especially with a decent break after this game and other key Arsenal players out

            1. Eden Hazardous

              It will be -

              ------------------Giroud-------------------

    2. Nickofoz
      10 years, 10 months ago

Doesn't Wenger dislike having two very pacey players on either side? (Which is why he usually likes to play Ramsey right and Sanchez left)

If I'm wrong on the above, I'd say Walcott will be first choice, often being subbed off early and with the odd rotation

      1. Eden Hazardous
        10 years, 10 months ago

        Thanks Nick 🙂

I was just planning for future GWs and whether I should keep hold of Walcott. I think I will keep Feo and bear with the odd rotation

Can Stoke continue to show defensive resilience in the new year?

Their defensive assets have been excellent value for money picks in the past few weeks.

Do we expect them to continue the same or are we looking at a potential dip in form after the goalfest at Goodison this week?

Stoke defender for the new year? Yes or No?

I literally have no idea what to do with this lot, 2 FT's.

Not sure whether to do Ramsey and Barkley to Walcott and Ali to free up some funds for Silva to KDB. Or whether to get Butland in for Myhill or whether to get Arnie in for Barkley? HELP! or just downgrade Kolorov to free up some funds?

    Myhill
    Bellerin Williams Kolorov Cameron Moreno
    Silva Mahrez Ramsey Ozil Barkley
    Ighalo Aguero Lukaku!

Anyone got the stats on how often Wenger has started, Alexis, Walcott and Giroud together?

I'm thinking it might be time to sell Wally after Newc, but hope he can get one big haul, and maybe a price increase before i do.

    1. Zizoulicious
      10 years, 10 months ago

No stats but I think not often, especially as he sort of classifies all three as strikers. I reckon when Sanchez is back, Wallcott will be facing the dreaded rotation

      1. Demí
        10 years, 10 months ago

I fear that too. But normally it would be Ramsey wide, and Walcott rotating with Giroud. Wenger can't do that anymore, with Cazorla/Coq still out

        1. Zizoulicious
          10 years, 10 months ago

Good point. Maybe we're into unknown territory so difficult to predict what Arsene will do. Could be that a haul will cement his place

    2. Eden Hazardous

    I want a Stoke defence double-up.

    Butland Myhill
    Monreal Dann Walker Moreno Evans

Which defender should I get rid to get Wolly?

I actually really like your defence, I wouldn't bother.

If you have to; I'd get rid of Evans.

Afternoon all! Going to spend the next 2 days off my face so thought I'd ask for some help before I'm too paralysed to move.

    Hennessey
    Bellerin Moreno G. Johnson
Ozil (c) De Bruyne Arnautovic Mahrez
    Lukaku Kane Vardy

Subs: Myhill, Coutinho, Kolarov, R. Martin
    0.7 ITB
    1 FT

Bit of a benching dilemma this week, have I got it right? And which of these would you go for:

    A: Kolarov --> Aldeweireld
    B: Vardy --> Ighalo
    C: Save FT
    D: Other

    Cheers 🙂

I would save. You can field 3 decent defenders, team is good to go.

Keep kolarov, they just managed to finally get a clean sheet. Surely now is the worst time to get rid?
Vardy has bournemouth...Ighalo has City...I have ighalo instead of Vardy, but i've been like that all season. If I had Vardy up to this point I would keep him for that game.

      D. Myhill > Butland (as u seem to have little faith in him)

Got 2FTs, dont have anything really to do with them so Kolarov > A Smith... Punty.. lei,WHM,NOR,sun, cry next 5 for Smith.. seems to be favoured by BPS.... what could go wrong with this?!

Could be any of them really, I think Bellerin is pretty safe however as he's young and debuchy has thrown his toys out the prism
