It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Fresh from his best score (14 points) of the campaign so far, Mesut Ozil boasts a commanding lead (47%) at the summit of the Captain Poll ahead of Arsenal’s home tie against Newcastle United. Aside from a blank against Southampton in Gameweek 18, the Germany international hasn’t failed to produce attacking returns since Gameweek 6, recording six 10+-point hauls in the process. The fact that the Magpies have already suffered two heavy defeats on the road this term (Man City: 6-1; Palace: 5-1) ensures that Olivier Giroud (4%) and Theo Walcott (2%) also place among the top 10 captaincy favourites.

Riyad Mahrez (20%) claims second spot by a clear margin prior to Leicester City’s home encounter against Bournemouth. The Algerian drew blanks against Man City and Liverpool in recent weeks but demonstrated his capacity for explosive returns with six goals in three starts from Gameweek 15. Similarly, Jamie Vardy (4%) hasn’t scored in three but will fancy his chances against a Cherries defence that’s carded just two shut-outs since Gameweek 7.

Sergio Aguero hasn’t lasted beyond the 65-minute mark since his return from injury, but his unrivalled ability to deliver huge Fantasy returns earns him a 4% backing. Although the Sky Blues are matched up against a Watford outfit that conceded just two goals in their previous trio of home clashes, Aguero’s 13% ownership will reason that fixture difficulty is extraneous if their man can discover his groove.

Harry Kane (4%) sits just outside the top five as Tottenham Hotspur prepare for a trip to Everton. The Toffees will doubtless cause Spurs a myriad of problems on the offensive end, but their defence has proved their undoing of late, shipping seven goals in two home match-ups. Furthermore, Roberto Martinez’s men lay claim to just two clean sheets in the last 14 Gameweeks, bolstering Kane’s Fantasy prospects.

Everton will hope that Romelu Lukaku (3%) emerges victorious as two of the league’s form marksmen duel at Goodison Park. The 9.3-priced frontman racked up 10 goals in nine starts but faces off against a Spurs side that ranks bottom for goals conceded (15) and secured two shut-outs in their previous trio of league ties.

Marko Arnautovic and Christian Benteke have been tipped by 2% of FFScout’s readership. The former tallied four goals and one assist in his last five starts, rendering him an enticing route into Stoke City’s effervescent attack ahead of a trip to West Bromwich Albion. The latter has netted in consecutive starts and locks horns with a West Ham team that’s registered just two clean sheets on home turf.

Wow - looking ahead there's a huge swing in fixtures ahead, 2ft def looks the way to go to navigate this.

After this week 20, a lot of teams Arsenal/Everton both play 2 games away on the trot, City/Spurs/Swansea with 2 at home, need a bit of looking at and sorting imo, a lot of teams heavy now with players with tough away games so they may need shifting, planning ahead a little is all Andy.

I have 2 FTs and 0.6m ITB but ideally I'd like to keep that as I am considering (Barkley + Kane to Sanchez and Ighalo by GW23). Which transfer would you make this week (if any)?

    Cech (Hennessey)
    Toby, Ward, Bennett (Dier, Cathcart)
    KDB, Ozil, Barkley, Mahrez (Stanislas)
    Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

    A. Barkley to Arnie (until GW23 when Sanchez will replace him so would be for WBA (a) and NOR (h))
    B. Defensive transfer, if so who should be brought in?
    C. No need to transfer

    1. Ziro Becomes One
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

One of Bennett/Dier may need to be upgraded.

Reason being, Cathcart looks ok as Watford are tight defensively. Bennett seems to be your 5th cheap def. Ward is ideal with attacking chances plus reasonable defense.

Bennett is not 100% nailed although he has been starting for the last many matches.
Dier may suffer rotation when Mason/Bentaleb are all fit and later you might need all your FTs so if you can spare one now you might as well rectify the situation.

    Any ideas?

    Hennessey (Gomes)
    Bellerin Evans Jones (Moreno, Simpson)
    Mahrez YYT Walcott Ozil (Stanislas)
    Aguero Kane Lukaku

    2 FTs 0.6 ITB

Jones----> GJ perhaps, but can't think of a 2nd transfer.

    Cheers 🙂

Loic Remy loan move rumours not going away. If he ended up at palace that would reunite him with Cabaye. Those two played so well together at Newcastle...worth keeping an eye on both if it happens.

Ha...Villa might end up above them yet anyway even if he goes there.

What we don't know is what Remy may have said to people at Chelsea or other people within the game at other clubs. If he's sick of sitting on the bench and wants to leave then Chelsea are stuffed....You might want to keep him against his wishes but you can't make him play well.

Mourinho mishandled him by wasting him on the woodwork for too long.

It would seem a bit nuts wouldn't it..although the Villa manager has obviously made some sort of moves towards it.

For all their spending Chelsea always seem a bit thin for players anyway to me. Two or three injuries seem to see them scraping the barrel.

Then it would be ok as a 1 week punt. But if I were you I would play my 4th def instead as Dawson on your bench seems good for points this week.

A saved FT next week could be very very beneficial after the Capital One Cup and FA cup round which may produce some injuries.

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has made QPR striker Charlie Austin his top January target, according to the Daily Express.

Injuries are starting to build up at Selhurst park and Pardew is ready to strengthen his squad this month.

Pardew will be hoping to have more luck in landing Austin this time around after QPR blocked tany deal last season.

          Ozil easy.

Lukaku can score against anyone but Spurs are tight. He might nick a goal but slim chance of a brace or hat-trick.

Ozil on the other hand might get a goal and 2 assists easily against Newcastle.

Nope. That does not stop his runs. Many of his points were from that position in the lineup. He inevitably runs forward wherever he initially is starting from in the lineup.

So he is good to play.

Who's the best defender, or which team, over the next few weeks?

Man City always seem to concede even when dominating a game, no confidence in United or Chelsea either.

City are just rubbish. Check out the big chances conceded, it's garbage, and like you say that's from a team who dominate possession.

But Kolarov is practically a midfielder and even an odd CS in 4-5 matches is enough , isn't it?

For his pedigree and cost in such an attacking ManCity team that is a poor return I think. Many better options in terms of a defender place for an FPL team at the moment.

Dont shoot me if he scores a goal at the weekend though. 😛

Isn't pricey if he can score 15-16 points in a week as compared to Kolarov's price though

Yeah but he's no better than a lot of other picks. He's only in people's teams due to early form for him and City. He's average at best at the moment.

I am tagging along with no Citeh mid and hence I feel the need to have Kolarov. And City have one of the easiest fixture runs coming up

I've had Sagna for a while, was good value earlier this year, but since kompany has been out they look hopeless at the back, I think Sagna will lose his place soon anyway so need to replace him

Southampton are looking good for next 3 games. Fonte / Bertie can be good options. It's whether or not we believe Southampton can keep cs

Ramsey been so poor this season,
-Played 1317 mins out of a possible 1710mins
-3 goals/1assist/7 cs points = 60pts so down with some average players in game.
-Averaging 4 ppg (cs factor helps him) (Özil 7.2/Sanchez 5.4/Wally 4.1)

Am I (we) crazy benching him over Barkley?
        - played 1656mins (1710m)
        - 6 goals/8 assists/5 cs = 105 points (3rd highest mid/7th overall)
        - 5.5 ppg.

Agree BF just doing some comparing and tbf it doesn't read well for Ramsey but he has the easier fixture, still would like to add that I fancy Everton to score 1/2 and Barkley could easily match Ramsey this week or possibly outscore him.

As soon as he moved to CM his stats and ppg improved a lot. But he's a differential so he's doomed to fail.

I think Vardy is being overlooked as (C) by many this week

Captaincy has let me down so much with Mahez and Aguero in the last two weeks that I'm just going to follow the crowd with Ozil to avoid another rank drop

Though if I did not have Ozil, I'd certainly be going with Vardy over Mahrez, looks a lot more threatening in their last couple of games

Its just that Mahrez and Vardy are equal in their goal threat imo but Mahrez has more assist potential + 1 CS point + 1 point for a goal scored
