Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri raided the January transfer market for the second time last week by snapping up Ghana international Daniel Amartey from FC Copenhagen. The versatile 21-year-old arrives at the King Power on a four-and-a-half year contract and revealed that the Foxes have been after his signature for some time:

“It’s a great pleasure to join Leicester City. I know the Club have been interested in signing me for some time and that was a big part of my decision to come here. All over Europe, people are talking about Leicester City and how well the Club is doing in the Premier League. The team plays exciting, attacking football and I’m looking forward to being part of it.â€

The History

Amartey started his career at Ghana lower league outfit International Allies, where he was spotted as a sixteen-year-old by Magnus Pehrsson, who was on a scouting trip in Africa ahead of his installation to the hotseat at Swedish club Djurgardens IF.

After inviting the player to train in Sweden for three months, Pehrsson secured the rights for Amartey’s signature from the day he turned 18. Having started off in the youth set-up, the all-action Amartey quickly found his way into the Djurgardens first-team, where he was utilised as a centre-half and central midfielder over the course of two seasons, producing just a single assist over 40 appearances in all competitions. After attracting interest from Liverpool, Amartey’s second year in Sweden was curtailed by a wrist injury which restricted him to just 11 league matches.

In the summer of 2014, the Ghanaian made his way to FC Copenhagen for a fee of €2.5m. He was mainly fielded as a central midfielder during his time in Denmark, though showed his adaptability by occasionally filling in at centre-half and right-back. During his first season, Amartey helped the club secure the Danish Cup and finish second in the Alka Superligaen, and leaves this year with Copenhagen sitting at the summit. Over the course of 63 appearances in all competitions, he produced six goals and three assists.

On the international stage, he made his debut for Ghana last year and has since turned out six times, helping his country finish runners-up in the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

The Prospects

Amartey’s arrival bolsters the Foxes options at a time when – prior to yesterday’s home win over Stoke – Ranieri’s side had started to stutter.

Nonetheless, with N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater – who bagged a goal and assist against the Potters – firmly established as Ranieri’s preferred options in the centre of the park, Amartey is likely to be eased into the Foxes first-team set-up. The new boy certainly possesses the attributes than would be perfect for Leicester’s counter-attacking tactics under the Italian, boasting searing pace and endless energy that should quickly see him move up the back-up pecking order ahead of the likes of Andy King and Gokhan Inler.

In central defence, Robert Huth and Wes Morgan look nailed-on in a backline that’s conceded just a single goal in the last five Gameweeks, whilst it seems unlikely that Ranieri would utilise the new boy at right-back at the expense of Danny Simpson, given that he’s impressed so much in the centre of the park. Arguably, though, this could be his quickest route into the Foxes’ first-team, offering Leicester a physical, very mobile presence behind Riyad Mahrez on the right flank.

As we mentioned in the Demarai Gray Scout Report, though, Ranieri has been a little reluctant to instantly alter his first-team – the likes of Christian Fuchs, for example, failed to start in the league until Gameweek 8 before playing all but one of the Foxes’ subsequent fixtures.

With his side now back at the summit, Ranieri – who has mainly resisted his previous penchant for tinkering since arriving at the King Power – is likely to court further caution over the run in, ensuring that Amartey (who has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League game) remains a peripheral figure for now. It’s more likely that he could be one for the following campaign, once Ranieri has worked out where he fits best into his first-team plans.

Hendo is good but still lacking full fitness and with the fixtures still coming thick and fast he might not play every game as we can't afford another injury to him.

Plays more of a deep playmaking role. Firmino is the only good option unless Teixeira signs.

if Teuxeira signs then it confuses matters even more. Great player but the one thing we don't need is another no.10

Fair enough but he has the ability to play as a winger. A lot of pace on the lad.

yeah but he isn't an out and out wide player which is something we lack. I just feel we have a lot of those no.10 type players and when we try and play them out on the wing it's very ineffective.

So LIV's defence is in tatters and they have a league cup semi with STO and a tough FA cup game against WHU before travelling to LEI for the next league game.

Meanwhile LEI have no games and looked in decent form at the w/e.

No way am I getting rid of Mahrez this week

Absolutely sound reasoning. Also, he is prolly the most attacking midfielder in the number 1 side in the league atm for 7.1 mil. Rather bench him in the future than sell, but i got tempted to sell as well. Just reassuring myself 😀

Kane and someone else to Alli and Kun? Or Eriksen, instead of Alli, just someone to de-risk not having Kane.

Valid point. After watching Norwich concede 5 last weekend, it's tough selling Kane but Kun is Kun. Iggy has the tougher fixtures and Lukaku has blanked 3 on the bounce so am not sure just yet.

Let's wait and see how the Cup games play out

I am in a similar situation, Ighalo is such an enabler and the highest scoring forward in the game. Yet, Lukaku seems too risky not to have, especially with a potential double.

Always thought of that match as a banana skin, hence avoiding lukaku for the captaincy. The 'easy' fixtures drew me in for sure.

Here's an interesting question. We're all planning on triple captaining Aguero when he gets a DGW, but what about bench boost? You're arguably granted more points from a bench boost than you are in a triple captaincy. If a lot of your players have a good fixture, would you really bench some and bank on one player doing well?

I've been on the triple captain boat for a while, but now I'm reconsidering...

There is going to be more then one DGW.

Bench boost around GW 37 imo and stack up your bench. WC a couple weeks before that.

    B) YYT -> Firmino(maybe) or Alli(inconsistent but incredible value, is he good enough for a 4th mid?)

It's a fine line the difference between a good gameweek and a bad gameweek. I bottled 2 big decisions that would of had me sitting on 70pts+ for this gameweek. Instead I got a measly 43pts and another big red arrow.
First bad decision, removing captaincy from Ighalo to Mahrez after someone questioned my Ighalo captain pick so I switched last minute. Not a total disaster as Mahrez did get an assist.
Second bad decision was bottling a transfer of KDB out to firminho.
Going to start playing with my gut instinct instead of trying to play it safe.
It's a funny old game this is.

Ah, stupid Mertesacker. Ruined my Arsenal league win bet, would cash it out now if I juts could. Considering that out of the top 4 they have the toughest end program, by some margin to city in particular, I think it's lost now.

They should have kept that 3 point margin to City. Now they rest on having City at home, but that may not suffice unless City loses some unexpected points over the DGW. And even then there's Tottenham, just 2 points from them now, in good form, players fit and having better fixtures and Arsenal will have an away match against a top of the table team after each Barcelona match, while Spurs will have only 1 post-EL match and that at home and City will play away against a weak team, and then at home, and Leicester has no European games at all and already has a 3 point margin.

New plan: wait over next 3 rounds, hope Leicester will lose their pole position during the tough fixtures, and put money on them then. Also consider putting money on Spurs right away. It would be a huge surprise, but they have every chance to sneak to the victory. They're weaker than City and Arsenal, but not playing that significantly weaker than them, considering that City and Arsenal have much more taxing schedules due to their European duties. Spurs will in all likelihood rotate in EL.

Concerning the red card, I'm not sure what Graham Poll's been smoking: "Mark Clattenburg was absolutely right to dismiss Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker.

When Diego Costa broke through on goal, he would have had a clear goalscoring chance had Mertesacker not fouled him.

There were suggestions the German made no contact but, even if true, his outstretched leg impeded Costa’s progress so a foul was committed."

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-3414850/Per-Mertesacker-deserved-red-card-Chelsea-ve-second-half-penalty.html

It is pretty obvious that although Mertesacker's tackle was stupid, badly late, could have been a foul and surely was asking for a red card, it in no way impeded Costa's movement and Costa was still in for a clear scoring chance after the completely missed tackle and only lost the chance because he dived. See for yourselves:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szglk1gkoJg

It is understandable that the ref saw there a red card foul, but Poll should have been able to see it on video and know better before giving his judgment. Also, another instant of Costa's utterly disgraceful antics. Completely agree with Souness on that.

It will be very tough for us to win the league now. Mostly have to play away to the rest of the bigger teams, United City etc however the consistent level that every team challenging is very poor so I still wouldn't say for sure that that it's City's title already or anything like that. I'd leave your bet as it is, what odds did you get and how much did you stake?

I can't cash it out. Betvictor doesn't let it be cashed, I don't know why. Their cashout option hardly works at all. I got it at stake 5/1 before the season.

Forgot: you can get your stake back 10 times from bet365 if Spurs win. And you bet on that now. I think it's worth a try. They're just 5 points from Leicester. If Leicester can hang to the top over next 3, though, as crazy as it sounds, they'll have all the chances to win the league. Extremely easy schedule from there on.

But yes, it's as good as City's now. You just can't win money by playing them.

A curiosity I just noticed: City will play the two dark horses, Spurs and Leicester, at home in the next 3. Winning both won't of course yet decide the title, but it will go long way to that direction.

Which somewhat puts me off title betting now. City will in a great likelihood be 5 points clear of both Spurs and Leicester after the next 3, and that's probably it. At least it is little worth putting money on either dark horse now. After that there's a good chance they'll drop points at Newcastle and Liverpool, though. So I'm probably waiting those 3 matches.

Sorry mate, but I think you'll play the 3rd place again. I'm going to put my money against you in your trips to Everton and Manchester. You'll show your best against Barcelona, and then you won't be able to do much in the weekend clash.

however, there's a great likelihood my money is on you winning City at home. But that win will likely mean little for the title race.

I'm just gonna say: Well played Costa. He could easily continue but he felt a little touch and used it perfectly. Poor tackling and positioning from Per once again. Who knows if Cech would save it 1on1. It wouldn't happen the first time, right? With 10 vs 11 it's always twice as hard to get a decent result.

Everton were so poor yesterday. You almost sensed they hadn't turned up within 2 mins.

The crowd remained quiet throughout and the number of miss placed paces by Everton players was ridiculous.

Stones was awful, Barkley off the pace, Lukaku meh, Cleverly forget it, Mirallas should be sold.

Only player that showed any urgency was Delaf.

So Myhill is extremely close to a drop in price and I should probably sell. Wouldn't mind getting Foster as he rotates quite well with Gomes and I have the exact amount of cash (4.9m). However, ideally I know its best to wait for DGW news after this coming weekend but by doing so I'll be priced out of a move for Foster (could be a blessing in disguise). So as of this moment, who are the GKers at 4.9m that might get a DGW at some point, I know its almost impossible to know who at this stage but maybe somebody out there has some idea. Would appreciate some advice, thanks.

Nope haha though I may dabble with the Helliot rotation for the craic.

Might be worth ignoring DGW's and just finding as many clean sheets as possible.

0.1m is worth very little with over 10 weeks left.

It would mean I can't afford Foster

That's the missing 0.1m issue that afflicts us regardless of TV. We always want the 0.1m better player we can't have.

I suggest that the DGW play is still more important. Elliot could be DGW gold.

Newcastle are out of the FA cup so I'm not as convinced. A DGW gold player would be a player from a team that is still in the FA cup and league cup. Mignolet registers on the radar in which case but as I already have Moreno I'm reluctant to double up on that atrocious defence.

Might just get Foster and follow my gut here. WBA are still in the FA cup so there is a chance they get a DGW further down the track.

Go for it Ryan, you've still got your second WC anyway if WBA don't get any DGWs

WBA and Watford are still in the FA cup so I could have my bases covered if one of them qualifies. Yeah I think I'll do it. I have a feeling WBA defence will improve with Foster in goal.

Yes form + fixtures + Foster + Pulis makes WBA a good choice. I went with Dawson (BAPS magnet).

          Yes, very poor week.

My team is a huge headache right now and don't know what to do with it.

Thinking of just holding tight with my transfer

Dreadful season with a habit of choosing the Wrong captain conitnuously, but my aguero commitment has finally paid off.

I've not to be cautious, numerous mane captaincies and never having Vardy. Additionally got Mahrez 6 weeks ago....yes I am the reason he has done nothing ever since.

Would be interested to see the OR distribution for the survivors. How low could you be currently ranked ans still be surviving in LMS?

My LMS calculator is down atm to work out the rank distribution. Will see if I can do it during the week. All the safety scores add to 907 so 2.85m would make it in that context.

That would be a hell of an accomplishment. Ranked 2.85m and still in LMS afetr GW23
