As a result of last weekend’s FA Cup interlude, we’re treated to two full Gameweeks within the space of a week, starting with eight league ties under the floodlights this evening. Looking at the standout fixtures, Leicester City’s head-to-head with Liverpool pits together two sides that rattled in the goals last Gameweek.

Despite posting a middling tally of five strikes over the last four Gameweeks, the Foxes accrued the joint-fifth-most shots inside the box (34) and joint-most big chances (nine). Illustrating their diligence at the back, no team conceded fewer goals (one) than Claudio Ranieri’s troops during that period. As for the Reds, they notched eight goals and the second-most attempts (77). Although they netted five at Norwich City last time out, the Merseysiders managed one goal in four road matches prior to the Carrow Road showdown, highlighting a real lack of consistency.

On a quest to avenge a 4-0 mauling in the reverse fixture, Arsenal play host to a Southampton outfit that’s carded three successive victories and clean sheets. Only West Bromwich Albion chalked up fewer shots on target (10) than the Gunners (11) across the previous four Gameweeks, demonstrating their drop off on the attacking front. Meanwhile, Saints conceded nine fewer shots inside the box (11) than any team and the joint-fewest big chances (two), which points towards a keenly contested encounter.

Sunderland welcome a Manchester City squad that’s in the midst of a six-match unbeaten streak. The Black Cats boast one of the league’s form attacks, having mustered the joint-most goals (nine) and carded the best shot-conversion rate (25.7%) over the last four Gameweeks. Equally, the Sky Blues’ offense fared well, bagging eight goals and the second-most shots inside the box (42). Man City’s rearguard held up their end of the bargain, too, and was only breached on three occasions.

Elsewhere around the league, Norwich entertain a Tottenham Hotspur team that notched seven goals in their last two outings, while West Ham United invite an Aston Villa side that’s unbeaten in three matches.

Staying within London, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth do battle at Selhurst Park, with the former searching for their first win in seven league clashes. Manchester United endeavour to record just their second home win in six attempts when Stoke City pay a visit, and – finally – West Brom face a home match-up against a resurgent Swansea City.

Have to say, it's a fecking bad joke that the one team most in need of reinforcements didn't sing a single player in all January. Hope Villa has some good kids coming up from their youth academy. Grealish and Traoré seem very fine, but they don't play the positions that they most need to improve.

      1. fancy111

They can build their youth in the championship next season at least... Don't need to worry about loaning them out

      2. RÏɠBY

surprised they didn't try to get any players on loan to the end of the season
nobody would sign for them proper though

        • 12 Years

They deserve it for chronic underinvestment and crap manager choices.

I think Garde is actually a good manager, and I was cautiously positive about Lambert and Sherwood as well. I still wouldn't say they've failed as managers, conditions were rough.

I agree on underinvesting part though. And a lot of other things wrong in that organisation as well. It's a death trap for the manager.

One summer that did not suffice to fix all the problems in that massive failure. Or did they pay big money for their old guard?

      3. F_Ivanovic
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 3 months ago

I dunno. Sometimes you've got to cut your losses and there's no point Villa signing some players on high wages only for them to get relegated and have to cut their losses. Better to prepare for next season and try and come straight back up.

That's not what the new manager expected, though, and in PL, I'd argue you should fight to the bitter end for your place in the league, because that PL place is worth so bloody a lot, and even if you fail that relegation battle, you'll still get one year of extra cash to adjust to the life in the Championship.

          1. F_Ivanovic
            • 10 Years
            10 years, 3 months ago

Look how many teams in the past have gone down with high player wages and suffered for it. Yes, you should fight to the end if it's realistic to have a glimmer of hope but not in a suicidal manner if it's not!

            1. Camp No No
              • 12 Years
              10 years, 3 months ago

But loans, short contracts and so on would be options. And anyway, if you get relegated, you want to come straight back up and can pay for that.
