Everton manager Roberto Martinez added to his options in the final third by splashing the cash on Oumar Niasse from Lokomotiv Moscow. The 25-year-old – who had previously been eyed up by the likes of Chelsea, United and Spurs – arrives at Goodison for a reported fee of £13.5m, making him the third most expensive signing in the Merseysiders’ history. Versatile enough to lead the line up front or take his place out wide, the Toffees boss stressed that Niasse isn’t just here to make up the numbers:

“He’s not back-up for anyone. He has his own ability, his own conditions and he is someone who can stretch defenders. He can open space and has a real intelligent way of combining for others. He can fit in different formations – on his own, with another, out wide. He’s flexible and at 25 it’s the perfect moment for coming to the Premier League.”

The History

Niasse started his career as a winger with Senegal second-tier side US Ouakam. Having signed a professional contract in 2008, he helped his side gain promotion that year before going on to win the Senegal Premier League in 2011.

After scoring 102 times in 154 appearances, he made his way to Norway on a six-month loan deal but managed just three appearances due to poor form and injury. Rejecting a move to French club Saint-Etienne, Niasse signed with Turkish club Akhisar Belediyespor in August 2013 – across 40 appearances for his new club, he served up 15 goals and seven assists, catching the eye of Lokomotiv Moscow prior to the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

Niasse took his time to settle in Russia, though still managed a respectable return of six goals and four assists in 19 outings across all competitions last term, This year, though, his form has picked up considerably – in just 23 appearances, he’s delivered 13 goals and 10 assists, which includes an impressive four goals and three assists in six Europa League matches.

On the international stage, Niasse turned out six times for Senegal Under 23s without finding the net. He has since been selected for the senior side on five occasions, scoring twice.

The Prospects

A long-term target of Martinez, Niasse’s all-round game makes him a canny acquisition for Everton. Strong, pacey and hard-working, he’s also good in the air and, as his decent assists return suggests, a very unselfish player in and around the box.

Although he was unavailable for selection for the Toffees’ midweek clash with Newcastle due to a work permit issue, it may well be that the versatile attacker is eased into contention before nailing down a starting role, according to his manager:

“Mentally he is ready – psychologically he would love to be involved against Newcastle on Wednesday. But from a physical point of view, his last game was on December 10 so it has been a few weeks [since he played]. He is refreshed and I think we need to give him an individual programme to get him up to speed, but in the same way, I want him to be used in the games to get that familiarity with the players and with the league, so that he can have a contribution straight away. It will be assessing every day to see how he adapts. “

From a Fantasy perspective, Niasse’s classification as a forward in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game will ensure that the vast majority give him a wide berth.

With Romelu Lukaku nailed-on as the lone striker under the Spaniard and Ross Barkley equally secure in the central support berth, Niasse’s best chance of securing regular minutes is likely to be on the flanks, though there’s no shortage of competition from the likes of Gerard Deulofeu, Kevin Mirallas, Arouna Kone, Tom Cleverley, Aaron Lennon and Steven Pienaar.

Arguably, such a scenario would merely strengthen Barkley’s position as the only viable midfield option at Goodison – the playmaker has started every league match this season, whereas the likes of Deulofeu has been selected in the first XI in just three out of the last seven Gameweeks.

Although a price of 7.0 isn’t overly expensive, Niasse’s likely reverse out of position prospects will ensure he remains overlooked in the mid-price bracket – particularly when Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo set you back 7.2 and 6.4 respectively. With Southampton new boy Charlie Austin (7.0) also throwing his hat into the ring with a debut strike against United, Niasse – for all his talents – will struggle to make a viable claim for inclusion in our FPL squads.

Should Lukaku be ruled out with the back problem that forced him out of last night’s 3-0 win, though, the versatile Niasse – providing he steps up his fitness and receives his work permit in time – could lead the line as the Merseysiders make their way to Stoke this weekend. If the big Belgian proves his fitness in time, though, Niasse will surely struggle to earn a central berth if, as expected, Martinez keeps faith in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

a footballer post playing career can't really win.if he just goes to being a pundit its 'well what do you know, you haven tried management, if he goes to being a pundit from management.its 'well what do you know you tried management and failed'. have always respected Cantona for completely turning his back on football, I think he's had the most interesting post playing career out of anyone (as his IMDB credits show) and should be commended for not following the tired script of jumping straight into coaching or punditry

it's a totally different skillset. Ex players should work their way up, by training youth teams, reserve squad etc... before coaching/managing elite clubs.

    Ok, decision made.

Afobe ran him close in the end, but Naismith's potential ability to hit a few goals in one game puts him ahead for me. Plus he came from the mighty Kilmarnock, which gives him a little brownie point in my eyes.

Goodbye Lukaku, it's been swell, but Steven gets to hold Vardy's place for now.

I dont have link for but this is what it said,

Right then... here's all the info, permutations and some strategy for the blanks in GW 30:

        Fixtures that can't be blanks:

        Leicester vs Newcastle
        Stoke vs Southampton

        Fixtures that could be blanks:

Norwich vs Man City (if Man City beat Chelsea)
Aston Villa vs Spurs (If Spurs beat Crystal Palace)
Bournemouth vs Swansea (If Bournemouth beat Everton)
Man Utd vs Crystal Palace (If Man Utd beat Shrewsbury or if Crystal Palace beat Spurs)
Sunderland vs Everton (If Everton beat Bournemouth)
West Ham vs Watford ((If West Ham beat Liverpool and Blackburn) or if Watford beat Leeds)
Arsenal vs West Brom (If Arsenal beat Hull or (if West Brom beat Peterborough and Reading))
Liverpool vs Chelsea ((If Liverpool beat West Ham and Blackburn) or if Chelsea beat Man City)

Minimum number of teams with a blank: 6

Maximum number of teams with a blank: 14

Either Swansea & Bournemouth or Everton & Sunderalnd will have blanks.

Either Man City & Norwich or Chelsea & Liverpool will have blanks (they'll all have blanks if Liverpool beat West Ham & Blackburn and Man City beat Chelsea).

Leicester, Newcastle, Southampton and Stoke won't have a blank.

The subsequent DGW will probably be in GW 34.

We'll know a bit more after the 4th round replays.

The 5th round is in GW 27 (and the replays will be in GW 30), so we'll have either 4 or 5 FTs max to prepare for the blanks after we find out who'll have them... that probably won't be enough FTs to get a full team in GW 30 without taking hits. What do you think is the best strategy to deal with this problem?

        1. Wait until after the 5th round, then take some hits.
        2. Wait until after the 5th round, don't bother taking hits, have less than 11 players in GW 30.
        3. Guess which teams are most likely to have blanks and transfer out some of their players before GW 27.

I'm gunna try and work out the likelihood of each fixture being a blank based on the betting odds for the next round of the cup, I'll add that to the Blanks Tracker page of my spreadsheet shortly.

This is what I'm following - dont know who is updating but it's pretty simple once you go over it a few times:

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zcb5jGdVitByKQ8R1X4gcEBpiNY9qbLylr72btlTubc/edit#gid=1214293201

Basically, Southampton, Stoke, Newcastle and Leicester are sure to have matches in gw 30 while Bournemouth and Swanse is most likely to be played out of all the matches between teams still in the FA cup, followed by Everton vs Swansea but can't have both.

Let me know if you interpret it differently - I'm still not sure I got it right.

I know Lukaku > Kane is the obvious move but....

I'm tempted to just bench Lukaku if he's injured and do Ramsey > Sanchez (c) instead.

The problem with bringing in Kane is that it makes my team more like those of the people I'm trying to catch in my MLs. Whereas Sanchez (c) is a ready made differential that could play off.

There's also a reluctance to bring in Kane so late, or to sell Lukaku when I have so much value tied up in him.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Why is Dele Alli so low in the captaincy poll?

Cos he only gets his funk on when playing away

Well he was playing away last game but he was still low in the captaincy polls.

It's about long term memory with the Captain's poll. Ali has been on fire, but it's only his first year. Many people vote in the poll based on history and what they have done over the long haul, rather than thinking of only the upcoming week.

I'm surprised no one is talking about him. He's scored 4 in last 5

2nd transfer I was thinking for my team (if not Arnautovic to Siggy) is Ighalo to Afobe - I think he is worth a try & might also play in gw 30 when a lot of teams will have blanks so you can field more players.

Lukaku to Vardy is the obvious move. As a differential, is anyone tempted by Martial instead of Vardy - at least for the next two?

If I would trust Man Utd, I would get Rooney out of the Fwd; can you afford him, though? I dont know their price difference.

Vardy is definitely not the obvious move.. Yet.

I'm thinking of Arnautovic out for Siggurdson on this lot:

    Butland - Myhill
    Alder - Fuchs - Dann - Mertesacker - Ake
    Ozil - Payet - Mahrez - Stanislas - Arnautovic
    Kun - Kane - Ighalo

Anybody in a smiliar situation? Any thoughts? Cheers!

his fixtures are very kind (incl. gw27 and gw30)

I'm thinking of replacing barkley with arnautovic (if I don't go ahead with Lukaku to Afobe)
