It’s time to roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article this Friday afternoon, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of a bumper round of fixtures. As usual, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez is the runaway leader in this week’s Poll ahead of Arsenal’s pair of home fixtures against Palace and West Brom.

The Chilean has racked up over 49% of the votes cast due to an upturn in form that has seen him serve up three goals and a trio of assists in his last five league outings.

With visits to Chelsea and Newcastle on his agenda, Sergio Aguero is some distance behind in second spot. Although City have toiled on their travels for most of the season, scoring just 17 goals in 15 fixtures, the 19%-backed Argentine has upped his away output of late and netted five times in his last six road trips in the top-flight.

After ending a run of four straight blanks with a goal in last week’s 3-3 draw at West Ham, Mesut Ozil finds himself in third spot. Still owned by over 41% of FPL managers ahead of his pair of home matches, the German has, somewhat surprisingly, managed just a single assist in his last six at the Emirates.

Back-to-back clashes with Villa and Palace’s porous defences bode well for Anthony Martial. With 7% of the votes cast, the United striker is shaping up to be a major differential asset – indeed, the summer signing from Monaco has bagged four goals, three assists and ten bonus points in his last seven at Old Trafford.

Further down, a cast of very capable candidates jostle for position around the 2% mark, with Kevin de Bruyne, Dimitri Payet, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge amongst the in-form alternatives for those willing to gamble with the armband.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

I don't own him either and i think he'll start 2 and 1 sub appearance. Had plans to buy him but with Lukaku doubtful went with Sturridge as third Pool player.

    A) Sturridge + KDB + Ozil + Alli/Antonio

    B) Sturridge + Payet + Ozil + Alli/Antonio

    C) Sturridge + KDB + Payet + Alli/Antonio

    D) Carroll + KDB + Ozil + Payet

Essentially, who to drop from KDB/Ozil/Payet.

    OR

Keep the trio but have Andy Carroll instead of Sturridge, which would also mean one less GW 35er

    Thank you 🙂

I'm 40 points of the top in ML. This is my team will use BB this week. How is it looking??

    Migs / Robles
    Bellerin / Simpson / Delaney / Lovren / Gabriel
    Sanchez(c) / Lanzini / KDB / Lennon / Coutinho
    Lukaku / Mitrovic / Aguero

I'm tempting to do Martial for Lukaku & Alli for Lennon this is give me 13 DGW players. Are these good moves??

Should I bench boost or triple captain Sanchez

This starting 11 took much pain as I had no wildcard

    Robles
    Smalling Moreno sagna
    Payet sanchez KDB iwobi
    Lukaku aguero rashford

Bench: Forster (sgw eve) alli, dier (sgw stoke) huth (sgw whu)

Sagna was transferred in before pellegrini started benching him so I could take a -4 to swap him but already on -4 and want to avoid more hits.

Will I get a better opportunity to BB than this week or will I field sagna and tc Sanchez. 45 behind ML leader and this is my best chance to catch. Any advice graciously welcome

Throw the triple cap on Sanchez or Aguero. Most people who had a WC will still BB this week so better to differentiate. The options for TC will not be as good in week 37.

Gap to ML leader is 47 points. I am 99% certain he will captain Sanchez. I have 5 or 6 good differentials, should I match that and play safe or throw the armband on Smalling/Bellerin/Aguero?

Have Lennon & Lukaku issues but no United defence.

    Tempted by Dann & Lennon > Fosu-Mensah & Mahrez. -4

Can't see anything in the Mahrez money range that has a gw35 fixture that I really want. Seems very against the trend this week however.

Have such a strong gut feeling that Townsend is gonna get a haul in 34. Not sure whether to follow my brain or my gut though.

A: KdB, Sanchez, Iwobi, Lanzini, Payet, Aguero, Rashford, Sturridge. Would have to bench one of Lanzini or Iwobi for 34, probably the latter. Would then transfer out Rashford for Defoe for 35.

B: KdB, Sanchez, Townsend, Iwobi, Payet, Aguero, Rashford, Sturridge. Would bench Iwobi. Wouldn't need to transfer for 35.
