It’s time to roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article this Friday afternoon, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of a bumper round of fixtures. As usual, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez is the runaway leader in this week’s Poll ahead of Arsenal’s pair of home fixtures against Palace and West Brom.

The Chilean has racked up over 49% of the votes cast due to an upturn in form that has seen him serve up three goals and a trio of assists in his last five league outings.

With visits to Chelsea and Newcastle on his agenda, Sergio Aguero is some distance behind in second spot. Although City have toiled on their travels for most of the season, scoring just 17 goals in 15 fixtures, the 19%-backed Argentine has upped his away output of late and netted five times in his last six road trips in the top-flight.

After ending a run of four straight blanks with a goal in last week’s 3-3 draw at West Ham, Mesut Ozil finds himself in third spot. Still owned by over 41% of FPL managers ahead of his pair of home matches, the German has, somewhat surprisingly, managed just a single assist in his last six at the Emirates.

Back-to-back clashes with Villa and Palace’s porous defences bode well for Anthony Martial. With 7% of the votes cast, the United striker is shaping up to be a major differential asset – indeed, the summer signing from Monaco has bagged four goals, three assists and ten bonus points in his last seven at Old Trafford.

Further down, a cast of very capable candidates jostle for position around the 2% mark, with Kevin de Bruyne, Dimitri Payet, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge amongst the in-form alternatives for those willing to gamble with the armband.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

    What are people doing about Lukaku?

    For a -8 hit I could downgrade him to someone like Deeney and then upgrade Mahrez to Sanchez..

    Remember the player you least expect will get the biggest score and at least one of your 'sure things' will badly let you down.

    So Sessegnon (c) in for Sanchez it is. 😉

    Well maybe not that extreme...but your differentials could hold the key to success.

        Bench Boost

        Darlow Lanzini Gabriel Simpson.

        I think Darlow will concede both, but get save points for 6.

        Lanzini could be anything from 5 to more. I think 10 is a realistic expectation. But let's say 5 to be pessimistic

        While Gabriel may be benched v Palace, I think he'll play one of the games. 2-6pts

        Simpson - think that could be a cleanie, but lets says 2 to be conservative

        I think I'm looking at 14 minimum, but hopefully somewhere between 20 and 24.

        With a TC on Sanchez I think realistically he may get around that as well.

        I prefer TC for WestHam in GWK 37 than BB then though...that's what sealed the deal.

    If Pelle decided to play 4-4-2 will Kdb/Sterling start as LW instead of Nasri? I'm pretty sure Nasri will start Chelsea and Stoke games.

          I don't think Sterling will start v Newcastle straight back from injury...I think he'll play though. The bigger worry is Pelle shoehorning Yaya into an attacking role, pushing KDB out wide and then his favourite Navas taking the other wide role.

    Lennon -> Lanizini
    Bolasie -> Nasri
    Dann -> Mangela
    Ward -> Dawson
    Lukaku -> Martial

    For minus 12! Should I drop some of these? There is a long term plan behind this as well... but feels to much...

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 10 months ago

      How is this a long term plan? Dawson has woeful fixtures. Martial & Lanzini won't play GW35. City's defence is useless and Mangala wil be dropped when Kompan is back.

      Nasri isn't even a half decent footballer anymore.

      1. Cov
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 10 months ago

        So what do you recommend? Nasri, Dawson because they have DGW and then plays in week 35.

        Martial/Lanzini I will keep for the rest of the season

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 10 months ago

          I believe that investing in Walker is a much better option than Dawson. Similar price, but Spurs have a much better chance of keeping a CS in one game against Stoke than WBA have in a DGW.

          How much money would you have for a Nasri alternative?
