After kicking off our Euro 2016 team analysis coverage with a look at Albania yesterday, we focus our attentions on hosts France. Didier Deschamps’ side get the tournament up and running on Friday June 10 with a clash against Romania at 8pm before squaring up to Albania four days later at 8pm and concluding their Group A involvement by going up against Switzerland on June 19 at 8pm.

Recent Friendlies

The hosts approach the tournament in fine fettle, having won seven of their previous eight friendlies. Included in that run are triumphs over the likes of Portugal, Serbia, Germany, Holland and Russia, with a 2-0 loss at Wembley the only setback.

Deschamps’ side have found the net at least twice in six of those eight occasions, though have been less convincing at the back and mustered just three clean sheets, which includes a 4-0 win over minnows Armenia.

Most Appearances Raphael Varane, Antoine Griezmann (8), Blaise Matuidi, Olivier Giroud, Anthony Martial (7), Hugo Lloris, Bacary Sagna, Moussa Sissoko, Paul Pogba, Morgan Schneiderlin (6), Patrice Evra, Yohan Cabaye, Lassana Diarra (5), Laurent Koscielny, Andre Pierre Gignac (4)

Most goals Olivier Giroud (5), Blaise Matuidi (3), Andre Pierre Gignac, Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann (2)

Most assists Antoine Griezmann, Anthony Martial (4), Blaise Matuidi, Bacary Sagna (2)

The Key Targets

Given that Albania and Romania, in particular, have failed to impress in the final third, France will be confident of picking up a couple of clean sheets over the initial group stages.

As the only player to start each of his nation’s last eight friendlies, Raphael Varane is priced higher (6.5) than any of his defensive team-mates in the official Uefa game but the Real Madrid man’s thigh injury absence bring cheaper options to the fore. Whilst Laurent Koscielny (6.0) was expected to start regardless of Varane’s availability, the likes of Eliaquim Mangala (5.0) or Jeremy Mathieu (4.5) now have the chance to battle it out for the other central defensive berth.

Such a scenario diminishes the appeal of full-backs Patrice Evra and Bacary Sagna at 6.0 apiece, though the City man has chipped in with a couple of assists in recent outings.

Deschamps is expected to set his side up in a 4-3-3 set-up, with Blaise Matuidi and Paul Pogba nailed-on in the centre of the park. Priced at 7.0 in Uefa, the former produced three goals and two assists over those featured friendlies and his all-action style of play should help pick up the Draft Kings points for crosses and successful tackles.

Pogba, meanwhile, rolls up on the back of eight strikes and 12 assists for Juventus in 2015/16. Despite failing to play a part in any of France’s goals, he remains a very viable option at 8.5 in Uefa and still managed more attempts than Matuidi during the featured period.

Anthony Martial looks to have cemented a role on the left in recent matches. Listed as a midfielder in the Uefa game, he’s the priciest option in the centre of the park amongst Deschamps’ charges and sets you back 9.0 – the United man did provide four assists, though.

Antoine Griezmann is Deschamps’ preferred pick on the right flank, though his classification as a forward in the Uefa game is frustrating. Costing 10.0, he bagged two goals and four assists in the last eight and is also France’s main man for dead-ball duties, particularly when Dimitri Payet is not on the pitch.

Up top, Olivier Giroud (8.5 in Uefa) is favourite to be handed the lone striker berth in light of Karim Benzema’s enforced absence. The Arsenal frontman appeared in all seven of France’s recent friendlies and produced more goals (five) and attempts on goal than any team-mate.

The Long Shots

The France boss has a number of quality options at his disposal should he opt to chop and change his selections.

It seems odd to classify Dimitri Payet as a punt but with one start out of the last eight friendlies, the West Ham playmaker is far from a secure pick. Nonetheless, Payet still bagged a goal and assist in two recent appearances, whilst he’s also afforded a fair share of corners and free kicks when on the pitch. At 8.0, though, he’s perhaps too pricey a gamble for many.

Lassana Diarra and N’Golo Kante are likely to battle it out for the final central midfield berth. Although their Uefa prices (6.0 and 5.5 respectively) are relatively kind, the pair may offer more appeal in the Draft Kings game, which rewards defensive actions such as successful tackles and interceptions.

Bayern’s Kingsley Coman was a late addition to the fold. Handed his debut in November, the on-loan Juventus wide man may have to rely on minutes off the bench but is versatile enough to play on either flank and, at just 6.5, is joint-top for assists in this season’s Champions League. Coman’s pace and ability to draw fouls against tiring defences could boost his points potential in the Draft Kings game.

Andre Pierre Gignac is likely to play second fiddle to Giroud but should still earn minutes off the bench. Like Coman, he could feasibly start the last group match against the Swiss if France secure their passage to the knockout stages after the first two rounds of fixtures. Gignac has been named in the provisional squad but has yet to be added to the Uefa game.

Upcoming Friendlies

France versus Cameroon (May 30), France versus Scotland (June 4)

Doing some data collation of the going out with a bang league on my lunch there and Lateriser smashed the chips, scoring a massive 299 points over the two GWs. Thats over 46 points higher than the average of the top 50 in the league !

Wildcard in GWK 36, bench boost GWK 37 strategy looks a winner. Also helped him get a great final GWK score as he'd wildcarded so late. Proves that arranging the wildcard around the doubles really paid off.

Any chance of them getting rid of the chips altogether next season Jonty? Or will they continue to experiment and move the game even further away from the original?

I suspect though they will remain. Things that give people more points are generally a good thing for FPL as they keep more people interested for longer.

I think what will happen though next season is many of those who wasted their chips and wildcard outside of the double gameweeks will not make that mistake again. I think it'll make it harder to use those dgwks to steal a march....which makes KoL's research into the best way to use the chips and wildcard around dgwks so vital for us.

Really ? . Saving the wildcard/second wildcard has been common practice on here forever and has always worked out to the enormous advantage of people on here because the rest used it early . Maybe a few will change their ways but I am not convinced it will be wholesale changes next season.

I know from my own mini leagues - where the majority wasted them - most have said to me since that they won't repeat that mistake again. I reckon there will be enough who have learned...but yes, hopefully most will continue like lab rats to be doomed to repeat their errors. 🙂

They really don't care about us though; we'll play through thick and thin, whether the game's s*** or not. It's the general players that they need to reach and keep entertained for 38 gameweeks and they clearly thought changing the gameplay and adding the chips would do it, maybe it hasn't so they'll change their media approach or something.

I would like to see if the chips actually kept people more interested, of course this isn't the sort of place to ask these questions as people are interested regardless but FPL must have a rough idea by activity figures.
Eventually, as you said, the chips will wear off and become mainstream again and generally irrelevant among FPL players.

As Kavali's community article on the veterans showed - experienced FPL managers adapted very easily to them. They are the new normal to us lot.

Exactly, but FPL's point is...Does adding three chips keep Kieth from IT interested in the game for a 38-week period? I don't think it does and there's my argument.

Im only collating the top 50 for analysis. But because its you ....

        - You scored just under 90 points less than the average of the top 50 in the two DGWs
        - Your points total (163) was better than two players in the top 50. One who TCd in GW33 and BBd in GW5 and the other who TCd in GW33 and BBd in GW34.
        - Out of the BB34TC37rs you scored the less than everyone else in the top 50

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Euros 2016 midfield malaise.

Perhaps like many I'm not having too much trouble finding good forward and defensive picks for my Euro 2016 team. With the likes of Muller, Giroud and Bale we have lots of choice. At the back Portugal' fine defensive record in qualifying is just one of a number of pointers to the players we can draft in.

But in midfield many well known options either appear to be underperformers for the country, overpriced out of position attackers or defensive midfielders that score poorly now recoveries etc have been taken out of the scoring.

What is your midfield looking like. Who are the best picks for the first round of fixtures? Who are the nailed on bargains? Who are the premium picks worth splasching the cash on?

It is currently Perisic Alli Grosicki Siggy Mak for me.

Mak is a very good pick at £6.0m. On all set pieces.

      My midfield is currently -

Reus/Gotze (depending on friendlies) Alaba Alli Perisic R.Silva

Perisic and a German mid look must imo. Alli is a good bargain given the defences England face and Alaba is a good choice as well. Rafa Silva has the potential to become the biggest bargain in the game with 4.5m price tag and one of the easiest fixtures around....other options I am considering are Fabregas , Calhanoglu and Weiss.

    5. alfoir

      Alli 6.5m
      Fabregas 7m
      Matuidi 7m
      Kroos 7m
      Alaba 7m
      Perisic 7.5m
      Mertens 7.5m

...I think I'll probably have four of those players, with Rafa Silva currently my fifth at 4.5m (unless there are any certainties in the same price bracket?).

Won't be having any 8m+ midfielders, in my view Muller and Lewy are near-essential up front with Giroud my third striker. Also some premium options in defence that look better bets for points.

Memushaj doesn't feature in the FFS assessment of Albania, he's listed under the 'most appearances' stat but have an assist to his name. I guess someone like Alli would have similar stats, but of Albania's ten goals in qualifying three came against Armenia and three came from awarding them a 3-0 win against Serbia after their match was abandoned!

Siggy - key man and main threat for Iceland, on set-pieces.
Hazard - looks back to his best
Perisic - good player, good price
Alli - good player, good price
Rafa Silva - potential bargain at 4.5, more attacking than Renato Sanches

This allows a nice rest of the team in:

      Rui Patricio - Berisha
      Hector - Dier - Denayer - Pazdan - Matel
      Müller - CR7 - Giroud

The premiums that most interest me are:

      Hazard 9.5, Özil 8.5, Çalhanoğlu 7.5, Perišić 7.5, Hamšík 7.5, Candreva 7.5, Dočkal 7.5.

Hazard will definitely be in my team. Candreva I really like but may not start with, I'm not sure Italy will score loads of goals.

Hamšík has a good alternative in the same team (Weiss 6.5m) and budget will probably push me to the cheaper option. Dočkal is the same situation - Krejčí (6.5m) seems a good alternative from the same team. Özil I will do without because I'm set on having Müller.

That leaves Çalhanoğlu and Perišić and I'll most likely have one or other. Probably Perišić because his first 2 fixtures look preferable.

          If you say so. 😀

Wilmots speaking to Belgian newspaper Sport Wereld:

"I expect of Eden that he will be decisive in France. I'm not worried about Eden. He answers with his feet. He leads with his feet. What I expect from him? That he is decisive, that he serves his quality to the team."

"Eden is still only 25. He's really looking forward to this European Championship and he remains a great footballer."

Sounds like my kind of fringe player really. 😕

He can expect whatever he wants, but the way he sets his team up effectively isolates Hazard.

Don't get me wrong, Hazard is the best individual player of the team. It's all Wilmots' fault. He's an idiot.

    Perisic / Fabregas / Alaba / Grosicki / Rafa
    Muller / Lewandowski / Giroud

Thoughts? I'm not sure if I need Belgium coverage, as their group seems really competitive. I've been considering Mertens and Djourou in for Grosicki and Schar, but I'm not sure.

I've been defence heavy up until today.

Seems to be more value in defence than anywhere else, but there are also cheap decent options at the back whereas there's very little decent for cheap in midfield..

(Juanfran + Hamsik) vs (Alba + R.Brady) for example

        1. Reedy

Mmm true. Mak might be an acceptable downgrade in midfield but I do like Hamsik. And a lot of the cheaper defenders have question marks over them...is Juanfran certain to start?

well, generating random numbers is simple. Something like =RANDBETWEEN(bottom, top) where bottom and top will be the min and max values you can generate.

Can you assign a value to each answer and do a basic lookup function for the random number generated to tie into an answer?

Kinda difficult to describe and know without seeing what you are trying to do.

With France's injuries and Germany's not-so-hot defensive record in qualifiers, there is a real lack of assured clean sheets from the big teams during the group stages. Spain and Portugal seem the best bets, both with potentially cheap routes in.

Once the friendlies are out of the way it is likely there will be a nice range of nailed on budget defenders across the groups to choose from. Picking players who don't all play a high scoring side on the same game week should be avoided (for example, having a SUI, SVK and CRO defender on the same team is a bad idea, as they play FRA, ENG and GER respectively on GW3 and are likely to concede). Spreading the games against the big hitters across your five cheapies should offer a lot of possibility for picking up 2-3 clean sheets per GW, making your 4-4.5 defenders great value for money and freeing up funds for mid and attack

      Nice first draft 🙂

Not mad on RSilva (or Alli to a lesser extent), I'd probably downgrade Siggy and upgrade one of them.

Hector looks great value for the WC but I don't think he'll be worth the outlay from the very start.. Depends when you're planning on WCing.

        Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not too keen on RSilva either, but I needed to try and free up some cash from somewhere. I'll see what I can do.

When do you think the best time is to wildcard?

RSilva may be a bargain if he does indeed play. If he doesnt, you have Andre Gomes for a bit more cash who should be the main competitor.

Having seen the Daily 7's game advertised by McDonalds Fantasy, I inquired as to what it would be to UEFA - this is the reply I got -

In Daily 7's you will be able to select 7 players on each Gameday and earn points as per their performances. Rules and regulations regarding the same will be updated soon. The Game will begin shortly. Keep playing!

Sounds hard work but interesting if you know enough to play it!

I assume it will be similar to the sky sports super 6. If so it's quite a fun game.

    Pogba, Martial, Griezmann, Payet, Giroud.

Who is your favourite pick and why?

Griezmann, he's their main man for this tournament

      Giroud - I captained him in GW38!

I think I'm going with Giroud, but I'd also say that Griezmann & Martial are good options too. Not Payet as I don't see him starting

Too early to say, need to see France in the friendlies before making a judgment

Griezmann is the obvious choice but he occupies a much-coveted striker spot, and if he is playing on the wing then other options may be better. Pogba isn't a great fantasy asset, Martial and Payet's game time isn't assured just yet and Giroud may be competing with Griezmann for his position

Martial cause he could be playing amazing on the wing

    Repost on New Post! 😆

    "You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
    The fundamental things apply
    As time goes by.

And just the same as this
Assist is just assist, a goal is just a gaol ...
    No matter who plays who
As one and one makes two.

    And when two sides contend,
They still play to the end -
    On that you can rely?
And points will matter more to you
    As time goes by.

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome players
    As time goes by."

    Apologies to Herman Hupfeld!

Not seeing KDB/Hazard or Bale in many drafts.

Are you put off by their price or something else? I can't see Wales creating alot of chances but I think Bale will relish playing on this stage.
