Group B’s underdogs are UEFA European Championship new boys Slovakia, who open their campaign against Wales at 5pm on Saturday, June 11, before facing Russia at 2pm four days later and then England at 8pm on Monday, June 20.

The side bears comparison with Russia, with age and a lack of defensive pace, alongside a heavy reliance on counter-attacking football, likely to be a hindrance.

Underestimating Slovakia would be foolish, though – in their international tournament debut, the 2010 World Cup, they knocked out defending champions Italy on their way to the last 16, whilst a 2-1 defeat of Spain in qualifying confirmed a taste for big-name scalps.

THE ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

That home victory over Spain ended an eight-year undefeated period in qualification matches for La Roja, part of a superb early run when Slovakia won their first six group matches on the spin.

Things got a little jittery after that, with a draw, two defeats and no goals in their next three fixtures, before a 4-2 win in Luxembourg secured second spot in the group, five points adrift of Spain.

Coach Jan Kozak consistently sets up his side in a 4-2-3-1 formation designed to sit deep and hit opponents on the counter, and it worked well enough for his defence to keep four clean sheets and concede eight goals in ten qualifiers.

The big question mark remains Slovakia’s ability to adapt their tactics should they fall behind and it will be a surprise if they can muster enough resilience and offensive firepower to find their way out of Group B.

Over the last 12 months, Slovakia have played five friendlies, winning against Switzerland, Iceland and Georgia, and drawing with Latvia and Republic of Ireland. Kozak’s troops have netted at least twice in four of those fixtures, though managed just a single clean sheet.

Most Appearances Matus Kozacik, Marek Hamsik (10), Tomas Hubocan, Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka, Viktor Pecovsky (9), Martin Skrtel, Peter Pekarik, Vladimir Weiss (8), Miroslav Stoch, Adam Nemec (7)

Most Goals Marek Hamsik (5), Adam Nemec (3); Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka (2).

Most Assists Vladimir Weiss (6); Adam Nemec, Miroslav Stoch (2); Marek Hamsik, Robert Mak, Juraj Kucka, Stanislav Sestak, Peter Pekarik (1).

THE KEY TARGETS

Slovakia’s chief attacking threat comes from playmaker Marek Hamsik. The Napoli man is now 28 and close to his peak – he fired more attempts than any team-mate in qualifying, with five qualifying goals making him the squad’s top scorer. Priced at 7.5 in the official Uefa game, Hamsik recorded six strikes and 11 assists in Serie A last season and is almost certain to be the Slovaks’ most popular pick.

Former Manchester City wide man Vladimir Weiss (6.5) also caught the eye in qualifying, with six assists the joint-best return across the competition. Stationed on the left, Weiss created more chances than any team-mate in qualifying and is afforded a fair share of corner kicks. His ability to take on and beat opponents should also draw fouls and earn points in the Draft Kings game.

Lone striker Adam Nemec (6.5) featured in seven of the team’s ten group fixtures, scoring three times and providing one assist. Having also bagged a brace against Georgia on Friday evening, he looks to have strengthened his position as first-choice lone striker under Kozak.

In central midfield, Juraj Kucka (6.0 in Uefa) offers good all-round potential in the mid-price bracket. The AC Milan man was second only to Hamsik for attempts over the qualifiers and found the net twice, whilst he also made more successful tackles than any team-mate, heightening his Draft Kings potential.

THE LONG SHOTS

With Martin Skrtel setting you back 5.5, full-backs Tomas Hubocan and Peter Pekarik (both 5.0) are the cheapest of the nailed-on options in a somewhat unconvincing defence. As the team’s most productive full-back for successful tackles and key passes, the former looks likely to offer some value in the Draft Kings game. Keeper Matus Kozacik comes in are just 4.5 in Uefa, though, and played a part in all ten matches in the qualifiers.

Right winger Robert Mak (6.0) will struggle for our attentions, though he did manage a goal and two assists on the road to France. Mak’s attacking stats – double-figures for both shots and key passes – afford a degree of optimism, whilst the former Man City youth player also shares corner duties with Weiss and is top by some distance for crosses.

This is a new draft I have been working on. How is it?

    Patricio / Sommer
    Alba / Juanfran / Boateng / Denayer / Vrsaljko
    Reus / Perisic / Fabregas / Junuzovic / R.Silva
    Muller / Giroud / Kane

I think the midfield is the weak link in the side . Any suggestions? 0m ITB.

Drop Reus to Kroos, and do something with those two at the end. Drop Juanfran.

Interesting team 🙂 Not a fan of the Fabregas pick, however. Junuzovic could be a gold differential.

Out of curiosity, does Hummels have more goal threat than Boateng hence his £0.5m + price? Don't follow these non-BPL lads ...

I think Spain are going to do very well in the Euros. Hence , wanted an attacker and I love Fabregas as a player. 🙂

Hummels has a lower goal threat imo . Dunno why he is priced higher.

      Alright Eden!

Looks good. Not 100% sure about Fab and R.Silva. Have taken Rafa out due to selection issue on gameday 5.

Are you committed to the double Spain defence? Tempted by that myself.

Hadn't looked at Reus until now. Worth the outlay?

Rafa Silva allows me to have a lot of luxuries in defence but I am trying to improve there. I have explained my Fabregas pick above.

Not really. I want a French defender but Koscienly/Sagna/Evra overpriced and Mangala not nailed.

He is indeed IMO. I love him as a player.

Fair play, that 5th mid spot is proving seriously tricky.

I agree on the French defence, planning to put whoever their 4th defender is on gameday 1 once the teamsheet is announced. I don't like Mangala but I'd play him for 5m.

Am still not sold on premium midfielders in a tournament game but I like your style!

Today's Hot Topic - with Hull confirming their promotion back to the top flight and Burnley having already sealed the Championship title, how different do you feel it will be for the pair this time around? Are we expecting them to be better prepared and equipped and, if so, are they likely to be a more profitable source of Fantasy talent as a result?

Sounds like Bruce wants some answers from the board before he commits long-term.

Unless there is decent investment from either side I very much think it will just be more of the same from those two though...

Hull has a lot of good players - two young fullbacks in Odubajo and Robertson, a midfield three of Huddlestone, Livermore and Diame, and Snodgrass is a good player as well. That's a good base to begin with.

They need to replace one of Dawson/Davies with a younger and faster guy, a new keeper maybe, and a new striker to aid/replace Abel.

Pretty sure they'll beat the drop this time around.

Hull make little appeal at present. Middlesborough defence may be worth some investment but little else.

Burnley will be tough to beat but will hardly will be flush with goals I suspect. Again, defence might be the best bet.

Burnley are in very similar shape to how they were when they went down. Ings has been well replaced by Gray. Lowton has replaced Trippier. But this time they have experience on their side, most of them know what they are facing now and Michael Keane is turning into a high-class CB. They are a resilient team anyway and I think they will make a real go of staying up this time.

As for Hull, well the team coming up via the playoffs doesn't have a great record. Watford (2006), Derby (2007), Burnley (2009), Blackpool (2010), QPR (2014) and Norwich (2015) were relegated after 1 PL season. Crystal Palace (2013) were only rescued from that fate by the mid-season appointment of Pulis. Hull (2008) and QPR (2014) both came very close to immediate relegation and lasted 2 seasons. In fact only Swansea and West Ham can be said to have fully established themselves as PL teams after arriving through the playoffs.

Hull have also lost a number of important players since their PL season - Brady, Chester, N'Doye. Although they do have a fit Snodgrass now and Hernández has started to show what Hull paid £10m for. Steve Bruce saying "I have to be given certain assurances that we’re all moving in the right direction" after the playoff win suggests he knows the squad needs improving and isn't sure he'll get what is needed. I think Hull could well struggle as it stands although a possible takeover of the club might change the picture.

It's really cool to look at this because most of these trends are also the trends in my team. Dropped Koscielny, picked up Swiss defense, picked up Giroud, paired up Patricio and Sommer...hmm, FFS gets to you psychologically! 🙂

We sure Mangala will start? He'd walk into my team if that was the case. Sakho and Umtiti are arguably better than him.

De Gea makes a lot of good camera saves, which hides a bag of deficiencies elsewhere. I don't put him in the top 3 keepers in the league let alone in the world.

I agree with you up until 3 keepers in the league. Can't think of any better/equal outside of Hart and Cech.

to be honest I probably add in both Lloris and Schmeichel to the two you mentioned. I did also have Courtois above DDG but two red cards in a season is too reckless/idiotic to overlook.

Courtois lost a lot of credibility this season. Poor.

Courtois is class. Atleti is proof of that. I think even Neuer would've looked out of place in that Chelsea side.

He is class most of the time, but two red card + penalty concessions in one-on-ones is a bit of a deal breaker. Once is a frustration but overlookable, twice in a season is a big worry for me.

Opinions indeed. I see the many goalkeeping errors Neuer makes in the Bundesliga though, which is the reason why I've believed de Gea is the best for a while now. He's simply less error prone.

Neuer gets bored mid games, loses concentration hence makes errors. And that's a serious weakness to be honest.

Most would still put Neuer first though. Not denying he's exceptional at pretty much everything but he does make quite a lot of mistakes, is all. More than de Gea imo.

Verratti just reads the game so well. Brilliant player. I think he's more mature than Pogba in terms of playing style. Can't conjure some of the stuff Pogba does but he's superior in almost every other tactical aspect.

              [Opponents]{sp = set pieces}{p = penalties} (c = captaincy option)

              Kroos 7.0 [UKR]{sp}(c?)

You can add penalties to Lewandowski. Milik takes set pieces a bit more frequently than Grosicki, but Grosicki takes corners.

Well, I don't know who prepared that columns and where got the info from, but I'm Polish and I saw every Poland's game and Blaszczykowski scored the last penalty only because Lewandowski let him do this. Kuba was in bad form for a long time and just got this PK as a "gift".
Milik has very good left foot and shoots FK when position is OK.

My source is my eyes and info from last week trainings in Arlamow. When it comes to the penalty Lewandowski is number 1 🙂

Milik scored a free kick against Sui. He also scored few goals for Ajax, against Roda for example. Especially now when Rybus is out, Milik should have more opportunities for left foot set pieces.

All right. I understand. Nonetheless if you have Lewy and Grosicki and you count on their penalties, free kicks and corners, you're safe!

Guerreiro may just oust him anyway. Look at their recent friendly matches. Guerreiro starts about every second match. When Eliseu starts, Portugal loses and blanks. When Guerreiro starts, Portugal keeps CS and wins. About like that. The coach might have been taking notes.

          Patricio / Sommer

          Alba / Boateng / Mangala / Giaccherini / Vrsaljko

          Reus / Perisic / Alaba / Mak / R.Silva

          Muller / Giroud / Kane

0.5m ITB to upgrade Rafa Silva to Andre Gomes if needed.

I would prefer Ramos // Hummels than Alba // Boateng...don't like rest of your defenders...

Rest looks good, although I would prefer Lewandowski over Kane..

Boateng topped the European Qualifiers in SoTs. I think he has a goal or 2 in him. Ramos has a big goal threat but is a card magnet. What changes would you make to Mangala/Giaccherini/Vrsaljko?

              I don't have the money for Lewa . ðŸ™

Hummels also has goal threat from Set Pieces...

I would remove Mangala and Giaccherini, probably get a Swiss and an Austrian defender...No Idea about Vrsaljko

                  Croation defender - Vrsaljko

Croatia have an easier group than Austria. Also he ony costs 4.5m
No confidence in the French defence?

I don't think he starts for Italy and their midfield is quite changeable in any case.

Speaking of which, is anyone else suddenly concerned about the German defence, both in terms of who's nailed and clean sheets?

First Post and A First Post Fail, well done!

German Defence is solid with Hummels, Boateng, Neuer, I think only the full backs are at rotational risk.

Thanks. Will change Giacherrini to someones else then. ðŸ™

I am quite confident in Germany getting 2 CSs in the group stage. Hector , Hummels and Boateng look nailed.

Here is where I sit, suggestions welcome:

          Neuer, Lloris

          Giacherinni, Rodriguez, Fonte, Vertonghen, O'Shea

Pogba, Krejci, Xhaka, Juao Moutinho, 3.0M

          Muller, Ronaldo, Sigthorsson.

Any fundamental pick failures? I would like cheaper keepers, but do want France and Germany represented at the back, maybe switch one of them around.

Definitely change the keepers, that's a lot of cash wasted back there. No chance of save points also. Is Giacherinni nailed?

Mangala for France and either Denayer or Alderweireld for Belgium depending on whether price or attacking threat is more important to you for defenders.

7.5 in the bank for one midfielder. Right now my priorities are listed as:
          A) Kroos (even though I have Ozil)
          B) Perisic
          C) Alaba
          D) Hamsik
          E) Moutinho

Thoughts? If Alli was a sure starter I'd pick him.

Don't know about the stats, but he was the top scorer for Croatia in qualifiers (6 goals), and I've seen him play for Inter, he is a very good pick

Alaba is good, key player for Austria, but the fact he's playing behind in double pivot make him a riskier pick than Perisic imo

England are big game bottlers and Alli is only breaking into the international scene.

Lewis Baker needs to be in the first team squad next season. Has had a great season and his stats are top notch. (both Goals + Assists as well as underlying stats)

Needs another loan. Atsu was player of the season at Vitesse and others have done well there but that doesn't necessarily equate to being ready for Chelsea. Also, as Chelsea don't have European football for a change there will be less games.

That 21-23 age group is very difficult to bring through at a top club. Look at Bamford, Championship player of the season but unable to get in the first team regularly for either Palace or Norwich.

A PL loan would be great for Baker but the question would be whether he'd regularly start for any PL team, even someone like Burnley.

            1. Eden Hazardous
              • 11 Years

Atsu was different because he was scoring at an unsustainable rate. Baker on the other hand has created 3.5 chances per 90 minutes this season. That would have been the 4th highest in the PL but Eridivise is an easier league.

Maybe you are right. I want to see Oscar playing under Conte this season so maybe yes a loan is best for him.

I think he has the quality to start in 5-6 PL team but managers do not like starting loanees but they want to start their own players.

I am hoping for the best. He looks like a good player and the fact that he is English will only help him in the PL.

                I'd rather see Oscar sold.

What most interests me is what formation Conte will use. A back-3 doesn't really suit Chelsea's squad.

This. I don't see a single player who is capable of playing as a wingback for Chelsea - other than Cuadrado, maybe.

We also don't have any CBs who can play in a back 3.

Cuadrado obviously. Baba Rahman. Willian. Kenedy. But you are right, it would be forced.

More importantly, Chelsea's defenders aren't the quickest (Zouma apart) and Azpilicueta wouldn't fit anywhere either, not tall enough to play in a back 3 and not attacking enough to be used as a wingback.

I suspect we'll see some version of 4-4-2. 2 strikers is as much a Conte trademark as 3 at the back is.

Yep. Pedro's performances a lot when starts playing in a front 2. Also , I don't know whether you agree with this but I don't see Hazard playing as a winger in a 4-4-2 well. Fabregas and Hazard are arguably the 2 best best creative forces in our team and none of them fit into a 4-4-2 system imo.

I don't know about Hazard. Conte doesn't play a traditional 4-4-2, it's more like Chelsea's 4-2-3-1 except with the #10 being replaced with a striker. So, 2 strikers, 2 attacking wingers and 2 solid centre midfielders. Hazard does enough defensively to play in that system.

Fabregas can play that CM role against all but the best opposition. It is only when Chelsea are up against a better team that he is likely to get found out defensively. The question is whether we'll see Matic back at his best - or whether he'll even still be at the club.

Azpi could be a WB. He had the odd game on the wing for Mourinho if I remember correctly. Usually when defending a lead of course

I think he will either use a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-4 formation depending on whether he wants to keep Fabregas at the club. Conte when managing at Juventus was very keen at signing Oscar and I love his pressing , so I want him to start next season as first reserve AM for us.

A back 3 is a very bad idea , I agree. We need to buy 2-3 CBs and 2 WBs if we want to play 3 at the back. Unless Chelsea allow Conte to spend 150 million like United have done in the past 2 seasons , I do not see a back 3 as a good option.

I think it would be better if the players who were around the first team scene this season, like Kenedy and Traore, given some sustained chances. Otherwise this merry-go-round of loan players doesn't help anyone.

For those playing the Euro's don't make the mistake of taking out all your cheap eliminated bench players, you will likely need a couple for the later rounds to maximise your starting teams. Once the teams are eliminated they won't be around for long

Yeah, Mak's a decent option at 6.0 it's just Hamsik and Weiss are clearly stronger in terms of proven output over the Qualifiers and are the "go to" options in thier midfield.

Reports from the Polish camp suggest that Maciej Rybus, our first choice left-back (classified as mid in fantasy Euro), most probably won't go to France due to shoulder injury. He will most likely need surgery, which rules him out.

In that case, we have 2 candidates to replace him. Both are priced 4.5 - A. Jędrzejczyk and J. Wawrzyniak. The former is the most likely to take over this spot.

Yeah, I was initially planning to skip FPL for a year, then I realised I probably wouldn't manage to do that. Won't be my most active year, though.

Yeah, I have my dissertation to do. Have laid groundwork for it though, part of it was published as a short paper a month back, but still a lot of work. 🙂

Yeah. You need to keep your priorities correct. A dissertation is straightforward enough if you make a good structure and stick with it. It will certainly help if you have a solid foundation to work upon.

          - Costs 5.0m

          Tonight's stats
3 shots, 2 off target, 1 on target
          3 chances created
          2 freekicks won

Am I missing something? Looks like a strong side out from Italy. They could keep clean sheets against Ireland and Sweden and with his added goal threat he could be gold.

Too bad he didn't score a goal to nail his place in that lineup. Definitely watching him.

Plays Belgium first so I guess he can be brought in on a FT easily for GW2/3

You're right. Although I'd fancy Italy's chances for a CS against Belgium too.

Hence why I've just gone and got Vertonghen.

Why not Denayer? He's the one who will replace Kompany.

Didn't start against Switzerland in a back 3 and that looked like their strongest 11

That guy from the MLS Ciman I think his name in looks more 1st choice since being called up to the squad

Denayer played in a cup final two days before that match.

Denayer was winning the Turkish Cup final and assisting the winning goal just before that game.

McD's football experts. The same who still have Pirlo in that Italy squad. And Hernandez, but not Umtiti, in the France squad.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Euros – is cutting corners on value worth it?

With the likes of Muller proving popular picks (see Lyonnais look at the FFS community template http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/05/29/euro-2016-team-analysis-slovakia/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_13394437) there is a real need to look for a few value players to free up funds.

But would it be better to spread the value across the team rather than cutting corner?

What do you think of shunning some ‘on paper’ better, but more expensive, options for their cheaper versions?

Hamsik with his five goals in qualifying is a case in point. Can his much cheaper teammate Mak with just two goals compete? Or is the money saved and invested elsewhere worth cutting corners with Slovakia?

A lot of good midfielders have been classified as forwards. Bale, Arnie, Milik, Arnie, Shaqiri.
But I think switching between five 7-7.5m mids we can expect one of them to match the premium midfielder.

Wouldn't call Milik a midfielder. He is a forward for Ajax and plays just behind Lewandowski in the national team.

Oh. Would you pick Milik over Giroud or Shaqiri?
                Is Mila in the squad?

Mila is not in the squad. I pick Milik over Giroud or Shaqiri, I even pick him over Lewandowski.

Mak over Hamsik is one I'm strongly considering..
            Djourou over R.Rodriguez..
            Juanfran over Alba..
            Milik over Lewandowski..
            Ozil over Reus..
            Shane Long over C.Ronaldo.. 😉

Long over Ronaldo seems like an obvious move when I look at it now.

I have managed get all my first choices, bar one, into my team with the help of a 4.0 defender and a 4.5 goal keeper, plus Janko, who is kind of my selection anyway ... so not too much compromise at this stage.

I actually prefer Mak to Weiss - especially if it means that I can field Grosicky. 🙂

I have had Janko in every draft. For some reason he wants me to pick him

I think Weiss is better value than either Hamsik or Mak. But I'd take Hamsik if cash wasn't an issue.

Personally I think people are spending unnecessarily much on defenders. 😕

This is perhaps my biggest issue at the moment, where to cut corners to allow for upgrades. Current team and decisions to be made:

            Patricio, Sommer (keeping both)
Alba (>Juanfran?), Rodriguez (>Djourou?), Hector (upgrade or swap for Darmian?), Denayer, Matel (upgrade both?)
Perisic, Matuidi, Alaba (keeping), Alli, R.Silva (upgrade both?)
Lewy, Muller, Giroud (really want to keep all three)

Downgrading Alba and Rodriguez gives me an extra 2.5m to play with, which could upgrade the two defenders and two midfielders I feel are the weak links (Denayer, Matel, Alli, R.Silva). Hector I'm 50/50 on at the moment with Germany's poor recent defensive record.
