Euro 2016

Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma both score twice as Portugal bring the curtain down on the pre-Euro 2016 friendlies by putting seven past Estonia.

Portugal 7 Estonia 0

Portugal bounced back from last week’s narrow loss against England to register a third win in four with a 7-0 home victory over Estonia.

Cristiano Ronaldo served a timely reminder of just why he’s the most expensive player in the Uefa game last night. Priced at 12.0m, the Real Madrid man bagged a brace and fired five attempts before being replaced by Nani at the break – he’s currently the third most popular forward with 28% ownership.

Handed a second start in the last three friendlies, Ricardo Quaresma was afforded the full 90 minutes and outshone his strike partner by serving up two goals and a pair of assists. The 6.0-priced forward also scored in a win over Norway late last month and looks in pole position to retain his start for the opener with Iceland.

In the centre of the park, Joao Mario (6.0) produced a pair of assists in his fifth successive start. The Sporting Lisbon man has now delivered four assists across that period and, with a mere 2% ownership, looks an in-form differential to consider. Fellow midfield starters Danilo Pereira and Andre Gomes chipped in with a goal and assist respectively.

Renato Sanches (assist) and Eder (goal) both emerged from the bench to play a part in the rout. At a price of just 4.5, the former is owned by 16% of Fantasy managers yet has been utilised as no more than a second-half sub in each of the last five matches.

At the back, Fernando Santos made wholesale changes from the England match as Raphael Guerreiro, Jose Fonte, Cedric Soares and Pepe all returned to a defence that has now shipped just three goals in the last six friendlies.

The former trio have now started three of the last four friendlies and judging by recent teamsheets, seem to have moved up the pecking order of late. Fonte and Soares set you back just 4.5 apiece but, at a price of just 4.0, left-back Guerreiro could be the pick of the budget options if he retains his spot in Santos’ XI. The left-back bagged a goal and assist in a win over Norway late last month and created four chances for his team-mates in last night’s romp.

Portugal XI: Rui Patricio; Soares (Vierinha 46), Pepe (R Carvalho 58), Fonte, Guerreiro; Pereira (W Carvalho 70), Mario (Eder 59), Gomes, Moutinho (Sanches 58); Ronaldo (Nani 46), Quaresma

    just a quick question

should i opt for 3-4-3 formation in UEFA game, will i be able to substitute a forward for midfielder/defender after day's matchdays are over thus making the formation no longer 3-4-3 but 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 insted?

Going to repost this to see what people think.

    Just some thoughts.

Are we following the FFS template on here a bit more than we should be? Some people on here are suggesting players to others that they don't know much about at all other than what they have read on here.

I know the knowledge on this site is incredible! I don't doubt that and I know many have done hard research into stats and so on.

In saying that, are we trying too hard to create teams with differentials and hidden gems rather than going with the template a bit more with just one or two differentials thrown in to begin with?

I mean for example the majority of teams on here posting RMT's have Perišić (5% ownership) in them (myself included). Also Rami, Dragovic, Denayer all with 3% or less ownership all of which I own also. I am following the template on here because I have never played the Euro fantasy before. I have only really started to look at it in the past week or so and I don't have much knowledge on the Int friendlies and qualifiers.

For a better example maybe, I currently own:

Perišić 5%, Hamšík 5% and Giroud 12% which is pretty template here.

But for the same price I can get:

Alli 32%, Modric 22% and Griezmann 33% which is clearly more template in the game overall?

(I know Alli is highly owned on here also, just working within the price range)

Generally the FFS template will have lower % ownership of players for some because they do have a better knowledge as you mentioned.

It looks like Giroud will be the better bet for goals over Griezmann (potentially) and he offers better value if he does. Alli for me is going to get stifled by Rooney but he's a popular pick because he's cheap and english.

FPL starts in a very similar way - next season some of the players who did well last year will be higher price and FFS will look to avoid some of them (due to value), whereas the masses will see their points from last year and go for it.

Yeah makes perfect sense I suppose. From an FPL point of view it always happens.

I agree on Alli, I don't see him doing a massive amount but with that amount of ownership and low price tag is it worth investing?

Very good post, and something I've thought about myself. I've got a few players I have never watched play football, purely because I'm going with what's been suggested on this site.

It could either go very good or very bad, as you can see from those percentages of more popular players.

Yeah hopefully we get off to a good start.

Worst case scenario is the normal template does brilliant Matchday 1 and we all scramble to catch up only for the FFS template to kick a ss Matchday 2

I've just realised that all of my lesser known FFS-type players are midfielders.

      Yes and no.

Yes, because there is a distinct herd mentality that develops on FFS although it is less bad now that at the start of an FPL season. There are very valid options available that seldom or never get a mention.

No, because all of the examples you give are almost certainly higher-owned because they are better known. Griezmann, for example, is not the Griezmann of A Madrid when he plays for France. For AM he scored 32 goals in 54 games this season including high-profile goals in the CL. People will be aware of that and want him in their team.

But for France he has scored 7 goals in 27 games. His goal/game ratio is therefore less than half as good for France as it is for AM.

In that respect, the FFS template is more considered. But it has blind spots of its own as well. 🙂

    Rui Patricio / Sommer
    Hector Juanfran Koscielny Schar Vrsaljko

I'm on Denayer, but there's doubts over him too. Personally I'd go to a 5.0 (Rami/Giaccherini) and downgrade Siggy as I just don't see much coming from the Icemen...just my opinion though.

      (A) for me. I don't often comment on these kinds of question but I have been looking at something similar myself. Sigurdsson is very well positioned in terms of playing late and that has clinched his place on my bench.

Also to note that you could get Sommer and Gönül instead of Babacan and Rodriguez and be €1.5m better off with the same teams still represented. Is Rodriguez' attacking potential worth that €1.5m?
