Wednesday signals the start of the second round of Euro 16 group matches and, for DraftKings managers, that could well herald a switch in emphasis to a bigger squad spend in attacking areas.

There’s no question that some nations are already put in a “must-win” scenario as a result of setbacks in their opening matches.

Romania were unfortunate to fall victim of Dimitri Payet’s brilliance in Friday’s tournament opener and will now be forced to go on the attack against Switzerland. The Swiss earned three points but failed to impress against 10-man Albania and, while they’ll be content to earn a point, they will know that their defence will come under severe pressure from the determined and talented Romanians.

Equally, over in Group B, Slovakia will need to prioritise attack against Russia following their late defeat to Wales. The Russians rode their luck against England and will likely attempt to hold out against Slovakia who will surely go all out for a victory.

As for France, with three points in the bank, they could now cut loose against an Albanian side who will be forced onto the front foot by their unfortunate defeat to the Swiss. Albania earned a shock 1-0 win the last time the two nations met in 2015; that will ensure that there’s little room for complacency in Didier Deschamp’s ranks.

These factors should result in a swing towards more attacking football which, for DraftKings managers, will mean putting greater emphasis on match winners in those sides with the greatest motivation to score goals.

We’ve selected five targets that we’re expecting to shine, providing a solid spine to any eight-man DraftKings squad set up for Wednesday’s contests.

Marek Hamsik – Slovakia, – $8800
The Napoli midfielder waltzed through a Welsh defence to strike an opening blow in Saturday’s clash, only to be denied by a last ditch block from Ben Davies. Hamsik’s attacking threat was largely nullified from that point on but he still fetched decent returns via five tackles won. With his nation seeking a vital victory, the scene is set for Hamsik to lead the charge after topping the Slovakian ranks for shots and notching five goals in qualifying.

Dimitri Payet – France, – $10300
Payet’s performance on Friday elevated him to a new status on the international stage, ensuring that few DraftKings managers can afford to ignore him from this point on. Quite simply, his game is designed to fetch strong base returns due to his seemingly relentless delivery of crossed balls from both open play and set-pieces. Payet created eight chances for team-mates via 12 crosses whilst scoring that early contender for goal of the tournament; Albania seem unlikely to have an answer to his flourishing talents.

Patrice Evra – France, – $5000
While Albania posed an attacking threat against the Swiss, their record in qualifying, with just seven goals scored, would suggest that they will struggle to make an impression on the French rearguard. Evra was at fault for Romania’s goal on Friday and the former skipper will be looking to atone for his error. He played far further up the pitch than Bacary Sagna on the right and provided three crosses with two tackles won. With Payet possibly deployed on the left but drawn inside, Evra’s frequent raids on the overlap could be a feature of Wednesday’s clash.

Nicolae Stanciu – Romania, – $5100
Stanciu’s delivery from dead-balls was a key weapon in Romania’ armoury against a hesitant French defence. The 23-year-old crafted three opportunities for team-mates via four crossed balls and it was his purposeful run that drew the foul from Evra for Bogdan Stancu’s converted spot-kick. Stanciu’s contribution to the Romanian effort looks likely to be key against the Swiss.

Christian Sapunaru – Romania, – $3900
Another player to emerge from Friday’s French reverse with great credit, the experienced full-back was a willing outlet down the right flank. Sapunaru saw plenty of the ball going forward, receiving more passes in the attacking third than any of his team-mates. It translated to three crosses, whilst his defensive efforts earned an interception and two tackles won. We’re expecting Sapunaru’s forays down the right to feature heavily in Romania’s bid to overhaul the Swiss backline.

DraftKings contests for Wednesday’s matches are now available, including a $3 entry “Striker” with a $9k prize pot.

DraftKings is available only to those aged 18 or over. Be sure to take note of their Terms and Conditions here.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Never saw him mentioned here at all but certainly won the eye test and played 90mins. 6.5m as well (I think) so I like him a lot. Certainly prefer him over Alli and Junuzovic 🙂

Croatia’s Marcelo Brozovic leads the shooting volume charts with six, although he may wonder how. An early cross skimmed aimlessly off his head before another headed effort found only vague direction. A thirty yarder that is yet to land rounded off his first half trio before the pick of the bunch, a left footed side-volley that skimmed over. Shot five was an outstretched toe that lightly helped the ball towards the corner flag and an accurate but powerless header finished his tally. Some of these locations were excellent, but the chance of conversion minuscule, it’s hard to say he’s due a goal.

Hmmm... seems like the name recognition advertising is working. You realise they spent $131m on advertising in 2015? Just to get "fish" like you to lose money playing their game.

You can't win. Not unless you have dedicated software and are willing to invest very large amounts making huge multiple entries. The players that do that are the "sharks" and reckon on making around 10% on their overall stake (most of those will be staking $10k or more per day).

DraftKings make their cut whoever wins, of course. But don't think you are entering a level game. You're not. You are entering with the dice heavily loaded against you.

Same goes for FanDuel by the way.

      Don't say you weren't warned. 😕

I'd though of that but Alaba looked good today despite the result.

        Tempted to stick with him.

I'd say it's the worst transfer you could make if you are trying to win. This isn't FPL. 😕

Why not? No price changes yet.

This round was all about 3 players basically - Schär, Giaccherini, Payet.

Strategically the very worst thing to do for someone that didn't have those players is to get them in now (if they are trying to win that is). It's too late. You need to be aiming for someone that didn't score big last round but may do in MD2.

The only rationale for getting Giaccherini is as a cheap way into the Italian defence really. But there are other teams with better CS prospects in the next round.

Take all those points and i'm against point chasing in every sense personally i just feel i have made an error overlooking the Italian defence and if i can rectify that with an FT then i think it's a smart move.. i have no other issues with my team tbh

Hadn't a clue about price changes. Thanks

I'm sure the guy who was top of fpl after, let's say 8 weeks didn't have all the best players straight away. And I believe Giaccherini is as good an option as any. He's playing a midfield role with a licence to attack and is down as a defender. Not too mention how fantastic the Italian defence is, and his price of course.

The tournament is not that short. And I believe Giaccherini looks too good an option to turn down. If you're looking to win or not.

In general, I do agree you can't do much chasing in a tournament game but one move can't hurt.

Without debating the individual players, I think that this format with subs and captaincy rotation actually does reward going for a guy you are convinced you missed the boat on:

A - he scores big again and you've captained him.
B - he fails but you can sub him out and use the rest of your squad depth to differentiate from the crowd.

There is little downside but still some significant upside w captaincy to get in a Payet or Giaccherini, IMO.

I guess if you plan to captain him that's different. But would you do that in MD2, in preference to Ibrahimovic, Perisic or any Spanish player against Turkey? I'm not sure I would.

Good question. I don't have that many strong options so Payet to Bale to Zlatan will have to suffice.

None of them really. A can't happen since Srna isn't even in the Croatian squad anymore due to his father's death. Rodriguez is tempting but I still think Romania might score at least the one as they'll try to secure their place to qualify further. So, B looks like the choice I would go for if I were to.
