Wednesday signals the start of the second round of Euro 16 group matches and, for DraftKings managers, that could well herald a switch in emphasis to a bigger squad spend in attacking areas.

There’s no question that some nations are already put in a “must-win” scenario as a result of setbacks in their opening matches.

Romania were unfortunate to fall victim of Dimitri Payet’s brilliance in Friday’s tournament opener and will now be forced to go on the attack against Switzerland. The Swiss earned three points but failed to impress against 10-man Albania and, while they’ll be content to earn a point, they will know that their defence will come under severe pressure from the determined and talented Romanians.

Equally, over in Group B, Slovakia will need to prioritise attack against Russia following their late defeat to Wales. The Russians rode their luck against England and will likely attempt to hold out against Slovakia who will surely go all out for a victory.

As for France, with three points in the bank, they could now cut loose against an Albanian side who will be forced onto the front foot by their unfortunate defeat to the Swiss. Albania earned a shock 1-0 win the last time the two nations met in 2015; that will ensure that there’s little room for complacency in Didier Deschamp’s ranks.

These factors should result in a swing towards more attacking football which, for DraftKings managers, will mean putting greater emphasis on match winners in those sides with the greatest motivation to score goals.

We’ve selected five targets that we’re expecting to shine, providing a solid spine to any eight-man DraftKings squad set up for Wednesday’s contests.

Marek Hamsik – Slovakia, – $8800
The Napoli midfielder waltzed through a Welsh defence to strike an opening blow in Saturday’s clash, only to be denied by a last ditch block from Ben Davies. Hamsik’s attacking threat was largely nullified from that point on but he still fetched decent returns via five tackles won. With his nation seeking a vital victory, the scene is set for Hamsik to lead the charge after topping the Slovakian ranks for shots and notching five goals in qualifying.

Dimitri Payet – France, – $10300
Payet’s performance on Friday elevated him to a new status on the international stage, ensuring that few DraftKings managers can afford to ignore him from this point on. Quite simply, his game is designed to fetch strong base returns due to his seemingly relentless delivery of crossed balls from both open play and set-pieces. Payet created eight chances for team-mates via 12 crosses whilst scoring that early contender for goal of the tournament; Albania seem unlikely to have an answer to his flourishing talents.

Patrice Evra – France, – $5000
While Albania posed an attacking threat against the Swiss, their record in qualifying, with just seven goals scored, would suggest that they will struggle to make an impression on the French rearguard. Evra was at fault for Romania’s goal on Friday and the former skipper will be looking to atone for his error. He played far further up the pitch than Bacary Sagna on the right and provided three crosses with two tackles won. With Payet possibly deployed on the left but drawn inside, Evra’s frequent raids on the overlap could be a feature of Wednesday’s clash.

Nicolae Stanciu – Romania, – $5100
Stanciu’s delivery from dead-balls was a key weapon in Romania’ armoury against a hesitant French defence. The 23-year-old crafted three opportunities for team-mates via four crossed balls and it was his purposeful run that drew the foul from Evra for Bogdan Stancu’s converted spot-kick. Stanciu’s contribution to the Romanian effort looks likely to be key against the Swiss.

Christian Sapunaru – Romania, – $3900
Another player to emerge from Friday’s French reverse with great credit, the experienced full-back was a willing outlet down the right flank. Sapunaru saw plenty of the ball going forward, receiving more passes in the attacking third than any of his team-mates. It translated to three crosses, whilst his defensive efforts earned an interception and two tackles won. We’re expecting Sapunaru’s forays down the right to feature heavily in Romania’s bid to overhaul the Swiss backline.

DraftKings contests for Wednesday’s matches are now available, including a $3 entry “Striker” with a $9k prize pot.

DraftKings is available only to those aged 18 or over. Be sure to take note of their Terms and Conditions here.

nice, I'm actually going with Giroud because I think that Albania could be tight and negative and suffocate the mid as they pack it in

Good thinking. I still think payet will have a heavy influence but can see giroud being the beneficiary either way...Either through payets/other mids influence or through like u said Albania being tight on the mid potentially freeing him up. Giroud also looked good from set pieces the other day..I'd back him to get on the end of one of payets corners

        a) not sure if he's injured or fatigued and if I don't act now, I can't act then..lots of money to not start
        b) wildcarding after GW2 anyways so could easily bring him back in if he seems fine for what is his best fixture of the group
        c) Lukaku has looked out of sorts and Hazard has a knock too
        d) don't really trust Wilmots tbh

          A) Ireland though 🙂
          B) True, but Ireland is easier than Sweden if you ask me.
          C) Fair point. De Bruyne was inventing though.
          D) Yup. Can't counter that. 🙂

idk Ireland seemed pretty dogged..they'll be physical, more so than Sweden IMO

Fellaini also created twice as much as KDB 😉

though KDB did have 9 crosses

KDB should've had at least two assists. Lukaku and Fellaini messed up big chances.

for those of you wilcarding now. be sure to have some non playing (or even better playing) 4.0 def and mids. you can carry them trough to the knockout stages even though their team have been eliminated. it will free up the budget in the round of 16 and beyond.

Let's say Turkey, for example, looks like they're going to get knocked out no matter their MD3 result. You can sub in 4.0 GK Tekin on your WC next week and just let him rot there and have the extra cash to spread around to better players.

        1. aflickering
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 8 months ago

i don't think any team will be in that position though for one thing, 3 points is gonna be enough to qualify so it's unlikely anybody will already be out before MD3. i'm also not sure it's worth having benchwarmers in your squad for the sake of a little extra budget, it's so useful to have 15 good players in this game with the manual subs. that said, you're right that there may not be any 4.0 options for the second wildcard so i do see there could be some benefit to carrying at least one through to the KO stages. hmm, i'll have to ponder this.

I mean there are a fair number of decent 4m players too..so you don't shortchange yourself for MD3 anyways..

and you're right, it'll be more of a prediction than someone already dead in the water

To afford top players from teams left standing during elimination rounds it can be advantageous to have non playing placeholders to facilitate having 11 strong starters

Also as number of teams left goes down, number of 'matchdays' goes down as well, so you have less reason to make switches between.

A non playing bench could be troublesome

Alternatively, have a full 15 squad of players that are guaranteed to play in the knockouts and continue to sub the blanking or injured players out ?

I'm not sure if The Hindu is a reputable source but quotes are quotes:

“Is the kid tired after a long season? Probably, but I am not going to slate him, he has been a big player for us in the past and I left him on as he is often able to bang in an assist,” said Wilmots.

    http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-sports/i-will-persist-with-de-bruyne-says-wilmots/article8729580.ece

They need a win, if it's truly just fatigue (I didn't see anything about injury anywhere) then he'll play.

So, flip flop, I'm keeping KDB, even if I don't trust Wilmots.

does anyone else here think that a wildcard after GW2 is a slightly dubious strategy? to use your wildcard for the benefit of just one week - the most unpredictable week of the tournament due to possible rotation - seems potentially quite wasteful to me. i think some folks are being way too optimistic about how many of these rotations we'll have knowledge of in advance of the first game day, and some are also underestimating how limiting it'll be to have no safety net in the knockout stages - you'll be forced to hedge your bets or risk disaster, whereas those with a wildcard can commit more heavily to the stronger looking teams and not have to worry if there are a few strange results in one of the rounds.

GW 2 is full of nice fixtures. Looking for a good haul and then picking up the guys who look likely to go to R16

The whole tournament is 7 games at most, doubt there's all that much rotation. This is everything for these players and teams and then they get 4-6 weeks off to rest.

For me, I like the WC for the simple reason of stockpiling the team with some cheapos you don't intend to ever play.

      1. aflickering
        • 13 Years

maybe but the main reason i'm seeing cited for a GW3 wildcard is that you get the benefit of picking the players that are rotated in, which i seriously doubt is true.

there was actually plenty of rotation in the world cup IIRC. france are already rotating by the sounds of it and it's only the second game :s i guess we'll see!

i appreciate the above argument about boosting budget, anyways. i haven't seen that one much but it makes sense.

Certain players, imo at a major tournament, are untouchable. Boosting budget should just enable you to get those players.

can we trust in this budget boost though? is there any chance that they'll just remove all our teams after the groups and reset our budgets to 100 or something? i wouldn't put it past the people in charge of this website.

No they won't do that, it doesn't make sense. This game is about selecting a squad and by resetting the teams just because the prices change removes any advantage a savvy/lucky manager got by picking well before the players performed.

The game is also run by UEFA and I've definitely done this method in the CL game before.

There will be rotation in teams that get knocked out or secure top spot, depends on how much that is and which teams they are....

          • 13 Years

potentially no teams, i reckon. 3 points should be enough for at least some teams to make it through in third, and it's unusual (though not impossible) for a team to secure top spot after 2 games.

you're right..the number of those teams will be pretty low if any at all, but there is still the benefit of knowing better which players price will rise (I guess we won't get unlimited transfers before they change the prices)

    Strinic - Rami - Guerreiro - RRodriguez - Juanfran
Alaba - Payet - Perisic - Stanciu - De Bruyne
    Kane - Giroud - Muller

going to WC next week so:

nearly everyone keeps spain to one goal and did so even in their prime - it's even worse now. i think it'd be insanity to lose perisic, they were probably the best team of the first round and he was unlucky not to score points. ditto rami vs. albania, major chance of points there. your team actually looks rather good to me, i'd maybe look at offloading kane or even muller myself, i got big warning signs watching those two. they're still both decent picks though.

I'm hesitant to lose Kane/Muller as they both have "derbies" of sorts coming up in Wales and Poland

was thinking of doubling up on Switzerland with Patricio > Sommer, wasn't overly impressed with Poland's defense and Guerreiro feels like enough (and nicely attacking)

if you've only got two players with poor fixtures then you're in pretty healthy shape really. i'd only consider a wildcard if you've got several players (say... 8+) you'd really like to change.
