We continue our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, with a look at Stoke City.

To get up and running, we delve into the Potters’ data and compare them to the rest of the Premier League, before assessing their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look for some pointers ahead of the upcoming 2016/17 campaign.

Despite finding the net on 41 occasions, Mark Hughes’ side still finished in ninth position for the second successive season. Although they mustered just three points less than 2014/15 – picking up 51 points – it’s fair to say that the Potters’ threat in the final third took a turn for the worse in a season that saw just nine of their players find the net.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Anyone with a 6.5 and a 4.5 mid thought about rotating 2 5.5s?

Did it once with a forward and a mid rotating 352/343. Never again. As soon as you're 1m short somewhere its an instant 4 point hit to unlock it from your crappy 5th mid.

underperforming/ unnecessary 5.5 who'd otherwise spend 60% of his life on the bench.

Thats a very different situation, having a 5.5m as your outright 4th mid to rotating two 5.5s as your 4th and 5th mids.

Fair point. Having two 5.5m midfielders in rotation is chasing fixtures which has never worked for me. I am just going all in on Gradel and if it doesn't work , many good options in that bracket this year.

    Foster (Jaku)

      Wow, nice frontline!

Actually looks pretty decent bar the missing player 🙂

I'd consider Eriksen to a 7.5, Townsend to Bolasie and spreading the savings in defence (and maybe upgrading Fer a little)

Thanks everyone: I think Fer could be a very cheeky differential, as he has a goal in him. Reports that P.Jones is nailed on, and Nsue played all of last season, who would replace him?

Can downgrade 1 forward to improve defence, as clean sheets this year are going to be unpredictable, might consider more attacking defs.

There's a distinct lack of Theo Walcott in these here parts.

    - An entire summer off & pre-season
    - A point to prove after being left out of the Euros
    - More guaranteed playing time with Ozil, Alexis, Ramsey & Giroud going deep in internationals
    - Giroud absence means a possible striker role
    - Easy opening day fixture

    Conclusion: You're all weirdos 😉

That's my point though, he's a very adaptive manager when it comes to tactics, he would often change tactics mid-game at Madrid, or roll out extremely defensively one week against tough opposition and then go ultra-attack the next week vs Getafe. He'll play the players that suit the gameplan he wants to enforce, which might not be the same every week.

I'm not saying there'll be loads of rotation, but one or two positions might not be stable. Mkhit could play LW, CAM, RW... Rooney could get a game up top with Zlatan.. Mata might be CAM.. Nobody knows yet everyone is assuming it's set in stone that:

                Mkhit - Rooney - Martial
                Ibra

      DDG
      RB Smalling Bailly Shaw
      CDM Pogba

You're assuming he changes his tried and tested formation? Of course he can, there is so many variables. But its unlikely imo. If Depay hits form (who knows) then maybe mourinho will push martial forward to fit them both in

They're completely different in that while LVG hogs possession, Mourinho avoids it. But other than that, it's been an ultra-defensive 4-2-3-1 for Mourinho for years now, which sounds just like the "LVG formation".

There are so many possibilities at the moment though.. Martial might be reserved for a sub striker role behind Ibra, which would be a waste, but maybe Mou wants to play Depay / Mata / Fellaini / Herrera / Mkhitaryan / etc in those 3 attacking positions? What if Rooney is a CF behind Ibra, then Mkhit and Mata could flank them?

Everyone on FFS seems assured that Martial is a LW and will only ever play LW. He's no Hazard, he's well able to lead the line.

Much prefer him as a striker and I think he'll end up replacing Zlatan next year as their main man up front. But for that to happen he has to get chances up front, something Mkhit won't get (albeit with more risk of rotation probably)

...but I can see Mourinho sticking Martial to that left wing, because Mou's got a few other guys to take the lonely striker spot and Martial is not the poacher type that Mou prefers upfront, but has both the defensive and attacking qualities to play exactly the role Mourinho wanted Hazard to play. And I can well see him being Mourinho's favourite player as a LW.

5.5 and a decent 5th mid. I'd say he's a good finisher if in the right place and Payet is a great distributor. May be a good combination and cheap way into west ham, I'm considering him.

What are your thoughts on building a team with the intention of WCing in GW4? I really see it as a viable strategy. Hear me out...

-the 2 WC system means that there isn't much merit in holding onto WC #1 for long
-it allows you to take advantage of early fixtures without even thinking past GW3
-it allows you to take punts
-it allows you to jump on early bandwagons in the knowledge that you can hop back off in GW4
-it means you don't need a plan to bring in Sanchez/Payet/etc after internationals as you'll use WC

      same old debate every year.

my advice is form your team without thinking of a particular week to wc. u will naturally find a time to use it.

Thanks for the reply - i just think that it's different this year (and admittedly last year) with the new WC system. I don't think there is much value in holding your first WC personally

its not really holding. i wildcarded it at gw8 because my team nèeds it.

i usually find bandwagons easy to fit in with 1 or 2 early hits.

Im planning to do the early WC, trying to play the fixtures and means i dont have to sacrifice my team to Sanchez/Payet/Pool due to poor fixtures/recovering from fitness.

Thoughts on S'oton's formation under Puel? Based on match versus DC United's under 23s it should be 4-3-1-2, just like at Nice. So in some way we could project that Puel is going to emulate style of play that served him well back at Ligue 1.
Tadic roaming from position just like Barfa did could be a potential bargain of the season.

    Thoughts?

I think the formation is all but certain... The 4-3-1-2 lacks width and underuses players like Redmond.
IMO puel's playing two strikers in preseason only to assess his options

Don't agree. They lazy wingers. Have a few good strikers + Redmond who can also play that position. They have many midfielders & Oriel Romeu who looked very good defensively. Bertrand and ecspecially Cedric would be very much does to the wing-back roles

Departure of their main creative player in Ritchie, plus rumours of Howe being involved in the Enngland set up... though despite that I'm inclined to agree with you I'd go Wilson over Gray. Though it's only a small sample size he did score 5 in 9 starts in the prem last year.

I am a big Saints fan and maybe some of you would appreciate this: I have a feeling the Saints will roll with a midfield diamond formation. Hojberg will most likely be right above the one CDM. Basically a box to box player. Long seems to be the most "locked" forward at the moment. Charlie Austin and Jay Ro

Wow. Didn't mean to hit enter. But I think Austin and J Rod will fight for the second spot. Austin better option imo. Tadic will hophully be utilized in the number 10 role. Love his creativity.

Long way to go but it's looking difficult to fit Ibra in.

How can I pass up the opportunity to have Zlatan Ibrahimovic in my Fantasy team?!

I think I might just go for it because I'll regret it if I don't. Going to have to make sacrifices though.

What's the front 3 at the moment Andy?

Aguero and Lukaku haven't budged from mine, but it's between Ibra, Kane and a cheapie (Gray/Rhodes/Long etc) for the 3rd slot at the moment

As of right now - Aguero, Lukaku and Costa.

Have Mkhitaryan and Jones as my United players.

I quite like that front line but I'm never going to get an opportunity to have Zlatan again 🙂
