Having already drafted in talented young players such as Jordon Ibe, Lewis Cook and Lys Mousset in this transfer window, Bournemouth signed left-back Brad Smith from Liverpool on Wednesday. The 22-year-old arrives at Dean Court for a reported fee worth up to £6 million including add-ons.

After penning a four-year contract with the Cherries, the Australian international is determined to earn more pitch time after struggling to convince at Anfield:

“It all happened quite quickly. I knew there was a bit of interest and then they put the bid in, Liverpool accepted and it went from there. I flew to America (with Liverpool) and was there for about five days. Once I found out the bid had been accepted, I stopped training with the team to make sure everything went the right way. It’s a great stadium here and it’s a great opportunity for me to come and play in front of the fans. Hopefully I’ll do well, learn a lot and progress in my career”.

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Smith’s big break came when he was scouted as a teenager by Liverpool. He moved over to England at the age of 14, and progressed through the academy to make his first-team debut as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 2013.

That would be Smith’s only appearance of the 2013/14 season, though, and he would spend the opening months of the following campaign on loan at Swindon Town, where he played 10 matches in all competitions, registering one assist.

In September last year, Smith signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, but while he managed 10 first-team appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists, three of his four Premier League outings came when manager Jurgen Klopp rested many of his regular starters around the Europa League campaign.

Due to Smith’s parents being English, the defender was eligible to play for both England and Australia at international level. He featured for England at Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 levels, playing 16 times in total, before deciding to represent Australia. He made his senior debut for the Socceroos in September 2014 against Saudi Arabia, and currently has nine caps to his name. He has also played eight matches at Under 23 level for Australia, scoring one goal.

The Prospects

Costing a mere 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Smith’s acquisition will obviously put us on alert to the prospect of a cut-price route into Bournemouth’s back-four.

The new boy was handed his first start against Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, less than 24-hours after Charlie Daniels was the preferred left-back against Reading.

It’s fair to say that Smith faces a tough task to nail down a starting berth for the beginning of the season. Given that Daniels racked up an impressive three goals and five assists last term, and ranked fifth among defenders for key passes, it seems like the left-back berth is his to lose at present.

So far, Daniels is currently owned by 5.9% of FPL managers, more than double any other Cherries defender.

There’s no doubt that Daniels’ price rise to 5.0 is off-putting, though, bearing in mind that Bournemouth conceded 67 times last term and served up just seven clean sheets.

Similarly, Steve Cook’s valuation has also climbed out of the budget bracket on the back of four goals and two assists last season – having carried a strong set-piece threat last season, finishing joint-fifth among defenders for shots in the box with 21, helping him claim four goals and two assists.

At 4.5, then, Simon Francis currently makes the most persuasive case for consideration as the Cherries prepare to face Palace, West Brom, Watford and Hull in the opening eight Gameweeks.

The new skipper produced just one key pass less than Daniels last season despite featuring at centre-half on numerous occasions and with Adam Smith only just returning from injury to earn 45 minutes against Cardiff on Saturday, the versatile Francis could start the season at right-back.

It’s worth noting, though, that Francis is looking to become a regular in central defence this term, which suggests that Adam Smith – also costing 4.5 – could also be one to monitor if he claims the right-back slot once his fitness is up to scratch.

Despite last season’s defensive record, it’s somewhat surprising to see that the Cherries were the fifth most resilient team in terms of minutes per shot conceded in 2015/16, while they ranked seventh for shots conceded inside the box.

Ultimately, there’s too much uncertainty over Brad Smith’s minutes to take unnecessary risks, in spite of such a budget-friendly price tag. His arrival now offers Howe two viable options at left-back, which, in turn, lessens the likelihood of Nathan Ake featuring there. The on-loan Chelsea man was utilised in this position whilst at Watford last year and is now determined to nail down a central midfield role for the Cherries. At 4.5 and listed as a defender, his situation is also clearly worth monitoring – Ake made his debut as a centre-half on Friday evening against Reading.

So what you guys think of this "500th setup"? I will probably WC GW4 or so, so keep that in mind. Hope to be getting close to a "final" team.

    Foster | Pickford
    Friend | Shaw | Souaré | Azpilicueta | Fernández
    Mahrez | Ayew | Tadic | Deulofeu | Fletcher
    Ibrahimovic | Agüero | Negredo

Let me know any thoughts please, positive and negative. Or just to share thoughts a bit.

I was thinking of maybe downgrading a 4.5 defender to paredes and leave 0.5m in bank. So i might be able to get hazard in gw2 for mahrez if he shows some skills gw1. Or if mahrez goes to arsenal. I will draft in hazard. If Ayew leaves it will be Siggy.

Pickford might change to Jakupovic... both 4.0m

Any thoughts or debates are welcome?

Looks good and a bit different! I think you're right on the 4.0 def, 0.5 elsewhere can make a big difference to a team at this stage of the season.

Midfield looks okay although maybe another premium option could be gained by downgrading one of Ayew/Tadic/Deulofeu and putting the money elsewhere.

      Don't like Negredo, prefer Grey/Wilson.

Alright guys, first post of a new season and starting with a request for thoughts on my first draft. Unsure about whether I've overdone defence (so much value there potentially), and whether to transfer that to the midfield (Gradel < Townsend)

    Foster-Heaton
    Baines-Shaw-Terry-Friend-Paredes
    Haz-Mahrez-Ayew-Gradel-Kightly
    Aguero-Lukaku-Grey

Right guys... I've tempted to join team Aguerović.

What do you think of these two? I'll capitalise the 4 changes to make it easy to compare.

    A) Aguerović
    Heaton - Foster
    Shaw - SOUARÉ - Friend - Koné - Smith
    Hazard - FIRMINO - Ayew - DEULOFEU - Capoue
    Agüero - IBRAHIMOVIĆ - Gray

    B) Balanced
    Heaton - Foster
    Shaw - STONES - Friend - Koné - Smith
    Hazard - MAHREZ - Ayew - TADIC - Capoue
    Agüero - LUKAKU - Gray

        Nothings official till it's official.

My defense is probably the most "up in the air" area of my team. For example in A, I may still change my 5.5 4.5 to a 5.0 5.0, which may include Funes. Need to see if he's nailed, and maybe get more assurance on the defensive resolve.

Yeah still a lot of time to go. Funes and valencia in my defence currently but that is based on massive uncertainty. At least one will have to go. Team A looking very good though.

I can't wait until Liverpool and Arsenal assets start firing. Going to cause so much chaos here with one team overlooked due to fixtures, and the other for senior players being absent.

Imagine those that are ignoring them are planning on wildcarding pretty early.

The flip side is those who are not and get them in now get left behind if they have tight fantasy scoring games.

    I can see it now.

And Xhaka wins the ball excellently who lays it off to Ozil.

Ozil hits a perfect 40 yard pass to Mahrez who dribbles down the right wing.

He cuts inside, beating his man and picks out Sanchez at the far post.

Selflessly Sanchez squares it to Giroud in front of an open goal...

    And it's a goal kick.

Saints fans, if Jay Rodriguez comes back into form as he is threatening to do in pre-season, who's place is most under threat?

In theory he could play up front or out wide couldn't he? So that puts Austin, Long, Tadic and Redmond in the firing line. He could be a bargain.

My first time doing this so any help would help. Please rate my current team:
    Foster (Jaku)
    Shaw,Stone,Friend,Fernandez,Souare
    Hazard,Payet,Tadic,Ayew(Hojbjerg)
    Kun,Roonpig,Gray

(Obvious stone is dependent on going to City, if does not gone would get another 5M defender).....plus also can't decide on 4.5M Mid

      Looks good mate.

I'd keep Stones even without the City move though, Everton have good fixtures after GW1.

Thanks.....have had everton defenders in the past and they normally are slow starters.

Also concerns about payet game time but at 9.5 can easily swap with Mahrez,Ozil or Firmino as currently don't have any Liverpool or Arsenal cover

    Forster Jakupovic
    Valencia Baines Gabriel (McAuley Smith)
    Eriksen Tadic Deulofeu Firmino (Hojberg)
    Aguero Kane Gray

Like the Kane punt (seems silly calling it a punt due to his exceptional form last season)

A lot of people overlooking him due to the Euros

Hi everyone, after reading Saltergater’s great post on the importance of team balancing- I decided to make some changes to mine in order to maintain balance throughout.

    Courtois (Foster)
    Baines Walker Shaw (Paredes, Pieters)
    Hazard Lamela Silva Siggy (Fletcher)
    Aguero Negredo Gray

By having Pieters – a nailed on Stoke defender on my bench – it allows me to change to a 442 or potentially 443 when needed.

The lack of Liverpool is only due to their first fixture (ARS) and Swansea’s favourable match-up against the newcomers Hull – therefore Siggy over Firmino played out better.

I was contemplating two 6.5 strikers – but after realising there is no real eye openers from the 7.0 all the way up to 9.0 range – I decided to stick in Nedgredo and Gray

Negredo due to his first two fixtures being SUN and WBA - and Gray due to a opening match against SWA

Let me know what you think, and share your starting squads with me

    All the best.

Not a fan of Negredo given how he's been playing in Spain, also not a fan of Lamela, but I am an Arsenal fan. 😉

Thanks for the feedback buddy - lifetime Spurs fan here could expalin the reasoning 😉

Honestly, was 100% going to include Ozil in the starting 11 (was shocked at the lack of him in drafts on here) only to realise he may miss GW1 due to the Euros.

        Bummer.

He's back in training tomorrow, and we have a couple more pre-season games. He could well still start the season given his importance. Nobody has looked at all comfortable in the 10 role in Ozil's absence, and Cazorla hasn't been in any pre-season squad for some unknown reason. 🙂

What would you do if you came home and found Marnie Simpson from Celebrity big brother/ Geordie shore in your bed?

A: Tuck her in, kiss her cheek good night and go and sleep on the sofa
B: Politely tell to her she's in your bed and will have to get out as you want to sleep
C: Give her the best 45 seconds her life then call her a cab
