Moving Target

Having only brought in goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and youngsters Bassala Sambou and Chris Ranshaw in the transfer window, Everton completed their first major signing of the summer earlier this week with the capture of Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye, after triggering the Senegal international’s £7.1 million buyout clause.

The 26-year-old agreed a four-year deal with the Merseysiders, and speaking about his first significant new addition since taking over at Goodison Park, Everton manager Ronald Koeman outlined what Toffees fans can expect from the former Lille midfielder:

“Idrissa will provide quality in our squad in the midfield and we want to increase the quality in the team. He was one of the players last season with the best record in interceptions and pressing in the midfield”.

The History

Gueye joined the Lille academy in 2008, having begun his footballing education at Diambars in his native Senegal. He spent the next three seasons playing for the ‘B’ side, before making his first-team debut during the 2010/11 campaign. The midfielder would go on to make 11 appearances as Lille won a league and cup double, featuring alongside the likes of Eden Hazard and Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye’s departure to Newcastle allowed Gueye to establish himself in the midfield, and he subsequently made 25 appearances during the 2011/12 campaign, although he once again failed to register any attacking returns. The Senegal international would make a further 29 appearances the following season, only managing one assist, before establishing a key player for Les Dogues.

In the 2014/15 campaign, Gueye scored four goals from 32 league appearances, having only previously found the net once during his time in France, and also registered three assists. His performances attracted reported interest from the likes of Marseille and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace, but it was Aston Villa who landed the midfielder last summer in a deal reportedly worth around £9 million.

The new boy earned just a single assist league outings, though his ball-winning displays in the centre of the park caught the eye in spite of Villa’s relegation to the Championship.

Gueye made his international debut in 2011, and has since racked up 33 appearances for Senegal, although he has yet to find the net for his country.

The Prospects

Whether in the 4-2-3-1 set-up Koeman mainly employed at Southampton, or the 3-5-2 trialled against Man United in midweek, it’s expected that Gueye will compete for a central midfield position along with James McCarthy and Gareth Barry.

Considering he ranked second only to N’Golo Kante last season for both successful tackles (108) and interceptions (141), the summer signing looks odds-on to establish himself as a regular starter as the new manager adds more energy in the centre of the park.

Gueye’s arrival on Merseyside should help provide some much needed protection in front of the back four, given the Toffees conceded 55 goals last season, with only the bottom five sides letting in more. The appointment of Koeman should also help in that regard, bearing in mind that Southampton held the joint-fifth best defensive record in the top flight last term, conceding just 41 goals.

So while Gueye’s Fantasy appeal is likely to be limited to games that reward defensive actions such as FanDuel and DraftKings, he should help bolster the appeal of their nailed on defenders such as Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman.

Both have seen their prices drop to 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, and with Gueye’s presence in midfield likely to allow them more freedom to bomb forward down the flanks, we could see their attacking potential increase – certainly, Koeman’s decision to utilise the duo as wing-backs earlier this week has boosted their appeal.

Ramiro Funes Mori (5.0) is another to keep an eye on, though, given the Argentinian’s set-piece threat, having scored four goals in just 28 league matches last term, while he averaged a goal attempt every 97.1 minutes, better than the likes of Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann (114.8) and Leicester’s Wes Morgan (172.4).

In terms of the Everton midfield, Gueye – despite a favourable 5.0 price tag in FPL – is unlikely to merit our attention due to his little attacking threat.

Both Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu have been impressive during pre-season thus far, with the latter having netted three times playing primarily as a “false nine” in the absence of Romelu Lukaku, after the Belgian was handed an extended break following his participation at the Euro 2016.

With speculation linking Lukaku with a return to Chelsea, Deulofeu may offer some out of position potential heading into Gameweek 1 should the Belgian depart, but that will likely be short lived, with Koeman certain to bring in attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

Everton’s fixture list over the opening seven Gameweeks (TOT, wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL) is particularly favourable though, facing just one of last season’s top eight, so Toffees players look good options as we look to finalise our initial 15-man squads.

So while Gueye himself offers little Fantasy appeal, his energy and ability to break up opposition attacks should be good news for the prospects of both the Everton defence and flair players such as Barkley and Deulofeu.

Currently I have both Baines and Coleman, am one of the 0.8% with Snodgrass and 0.3% with Gaston, and have Andy Carroll on my bench. I hope I have the balls to see this through.

Walker or Baines for first 5-8 GWs?

Many thanks in a advance. Thought a few might be deciding between just one premium option from Everton and Spurs.

Also, Ahmed Musa anyone? He's in my team. Genuine contender for biggest point scorer in GW1.

Up top. Record signing and two great goals against Barca. Whilst Okazaki is a great utility player, Musa and Vardy has to be the partnership. Goals galore.

I'd go Baines if he's at wing-back and playing regularly.

Musa not for me at the moment, could be an option later. People were initially sceptical because he's not physical enough for the PL and now they're putting him in because of two goals... not scored in the PL...

Downgrade Butland to 4.0 or 4.5m keeper
      Payet won't play first game
Without Kante, Leicester will find difficult to keep clean sheet. So transfer out Morgan or Fuchs

Very much want to jump all over Feghouli and Carroll...
The obvious thing to say is 'bad fixtures'

Chelsea away - this could be anything.
    Bournemouth at home - goals
City away - has been a fixture that West Ham have looked upon favourably

Then Watford at home, west brom away, saints at home and boro at home...
    All very lucrative.

I keep tweaking but coming back to this team, please tell me I'm onto a winner or offer up some advice/rationale for how you'd improve it.

    Foster - Jakupovic
    Otamendi - Terry - Valencia - Friend - B. Smith
    Hazard - Mhkitaryan - Firmino - Ayew - Leko
    Aguero - Negredo - Gray

Otamendi is not in many teams, but he's had a fantastic pre-season and is a set piece target/threat.

Valencia has been given licence to get forward and will provide assists.

Hazard will start the season strongly and allows for an easy swap if not.

Firmino, despite tricky fixtures, will improve on last season (opposition doesn't phase him, presses from the front and plays as a second striker).

    Ayew a similar story.

Arsenal have so many players out, plus they always start slow, I'd rather swap them in when I know a little more about them.

Mhki, despite it being his first season, posts unreal stats every game (Bundesliga for Dortmund, equally strong league) and has been great in pre-season - plus fixtures are tidy and an easy xfer out if he's not doing the business.

Defence looks a little soft to me.

Not sold on Alli after the Euros, Erikson is a better option - his underlying stats are solid and consistent plus he's on set pieces.

Mahrez's head might not be in the right place at the start of the season, so that worries me a little. Payet unlikely to start, so bring him in later - better to be safe than sorry.

Borini a great shout, will start because of Defoe's injury and has already scored in pre-season.

RMTs can be a lot of fun, delving into the seemingly endless possibilities of creating the ideal 15 players within budget to maximise not only round one points, but propelling your short to medium term strategy of mastering the trade system before inevitably using your wildcard in GW 4. Form and injuries will likely throw the last 17 days (and the next 7 days) efforts into the trash heap and while it's incredibly fun to test the waters with the opinions of other experts (yes you're an expert and so am I) in all likelihood West Brom's title odds will shift from 2000-1 to 30-1 by GW 5 and Man City will be rooted to 16th place with 3 draws and 0 wins while having more possession than is technically legal.
That being said... RMT please 🙂

    FoRster/Mannone - note rotation
Azpi/Shaw/Friend/Souare/Lenihan - note nothing, everyone has them
    Mahrez/Deulofeu/Ayew/Tadic/Watmore - note penny pinching
    Ibra/Kane/Musa - note explosive potential

Love that city will be in 16 so your teams 10/10 for me. but seriously about 7,5 hard to not have aguero but if musa is a starter then could be an 8.5. like your defensive rotation early as its similar to my thinking. Where is Ayew going to be that's prob going to change it.

One of the last bits of the puzzle...
    Tadic or Siggy or Ayew?

You will do well with any of the three, but Ayew for the possibility he might play up front and will be playing Hull in GW1

so Ayew definatly not going to westham then?

It goes Ayew, Tadic then Siggy for me.

Ayew if he continues as striker, but even as a wide forward his underlying stats are up there with the best so he will pick up points - keep an eye on incoming Llorente.

Tadic has been confirmed at the tip of the diamond, Saints have strong attack potential.

Siggy just signed a new deal, intuition says he will start slow and grow so I'll be jumping on him when that happens as he's a massive form player, so wait for the clear signs.

I think we have to remember that Ayew didn't play as well under guidolin though... and Siggy did much better. But like you said it is possible Ayew plays up front.

Ayew if no Llorente, otherwise Siggy, then Tadic, but prefer Barkley/Arnautovic

Is the Fischer-love based on their opening fixtures? He's clearly got some talent, but this is his first season in England and he's playing for a newly promoted team. Ramirez, Gradel, Ibe, Feghoulli all better picks in my book.

He's looked outstanding in pre season so far and has the physical attributes to be a star from the off, but for me Ramirez is still a safer bet atm

Fischer is the best 5.5 mid IMO

He'll have a full pre-season with great fixtures to start - easy to swap to another 5.5 mid after a few weeks if he's not producing.

We'll have a better idea after Saturday but it looks like
      N'Sue RB
      Friend LB
      Gibson CB

Ayala is looking extremely doubtful now so between Baptiste and Fry for CB. I expect us to sign another CB before the first game though

Cheers mate. Always good to hear from a fan.

Why Ayala doubtful? Could Fry be the first 4.0 CB...

You expecting a solid DF show this season?

Ayala has just started full training after injury and is missin tomorrow's friendly. There's a chance he might make the first game but Ayala's niggles tend to drag on.

Fry is an outstanding prospect but Karanka is on record as saying he doesn't want to throw him into the Premier League - expect a Championship loan. I'd be very surprised if we don't buy very soon - Hull's Harry Maguire top target.

Check out that midfield! My preference would be to downgrade midfield and upgrade defence, but for the type of team that it is it is very good. Sanchez due to be rested GW1?
