Last week, Championship winners Burnley secured the services of Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan on a season-long loan. The 23 year-old full-back has struggled with injury over the past few years, so the Reds will hope he can get plenty of minutes under his belt this time around, helping increase his chances of building a long-term future at Anfield.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Flanagan expressed the importance of establishing himself as a regular, having seen his career stall over the past few years:

“I’ve had a frustrating two years and got back for the second half of last season, which was good. My aim now is to get as many games as possible and get back to the fitness levels I had in 2013/14. I have been out a long time and I need to get back to that level, which means getting a consistent run of games.”

The History

Flanagan is a product of Liverpool’s academy, and having made his debut for the reserves in 2010, was handed a professional debut in a 3-0 victory over Man City in April 2011. The defender made six further league appearances in 2010/11, before featuring five times in the Premier League the following season.

Injuries prevented Flanagan from playing any part of 2012/13, but the youngster established himself as a regular starter under Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers for the first time in the subsequent campaign. In 23 Premier League appearances, Flanagan scored one goal and registered two assists, as the Reds went toe-to-toe with Man City for the title, before eventually finishing second.

A series of knee injuries meant Flanagan missed the whole of the 2014/15 campaign, before returning to action at the start of this year. He featured in five Premier League matches, picking up one assist, and also played three outings in the domestic cups.

Flanagan represented England at Under 19, 20 and 21 levels, making five appearances, before being called up as a reserve for the senior side ahead of the 2014 World Cup. He made his debut as a substitute against Ecuador in June 2014, but failed to make the cut for the final squad.

The Prospects

Versatile enough to play on either side of Sean Dyche’s back-four, Flanagan is expected to challenge Matt Lowton for the right-back berth, given that centre-half Ben Mee offers back-up to Stephen Ward on the opposite flank.

Lowton nailed down a regular starting spot from December onwards last term, having began the campaign in the treatment room, and could get the nod for the season opener if Dyche shows a degree of loyalty to the former Aston Villa defender. There’s also the issue of Flanagan only having around a week’s training with his team-mates ahead of Saturday’s home clash against Swansea, although as the season unfolds, there’d be no surprise to see the new boy establish himself ahead of Lowton in the pecking order – providing he can steer clear of the treatment room, of course.

Comparing the pair’s underlying statistics, along with those left-back Ward, the latter offered the strongest goal threat last term, averaging a shot attempt every 231.3 minutes, compared to every 453.6 minutes for Lowton, while Flanagan didn’t register a goal attempt in his five league appearances last season. During 2013/14, when Flanagan was a first-team regular, he averaged a shot every 281.3 minutes.

Ward again led the way in terms of creativity, producing a key pass every 104.1 minutes last term, better than Lowton (126), with Flanagan (218.5 minutes) again trailing the pair. He did create a chance every 151.5 minutes in 2013/14, though.

When it came to defensive work, Lowton held the edge over Ward for both successful tackles (one every 39.8 minutes compared to every 54.8 minutes for Ward) and interceptions (one every 29.8 minutes compared to every 40 minutes for Ward) last season. Flanagan, meanwhile, won a tackle every 48.6 minutes last term, and also registered an interception every 48.6 minutes. Lowton may hold a slight edge in terms of CBI, then, which would boost his bonus point potential should he nail down a regular starting berth.

All three players are priced at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but with Ward missing Burnley’s final pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad due to a minor injury, and with some doubt as to who will start at right-back, goalkeeper Tom Heaton (4.5) and centre-back Michael Keane (5.0) look the choice routes into the Clarets’ rearguard as we finalise our initial 15-man squads.

Heaton’s propensity for picking up save points meant he finished the 2014/15 campaign as second top scoring keeper in FPL, despite the Clarets’ relegation. If you’re willing to invest more, though, Keane could be worth the extra outlay – the centre-half scored five times in 2015/16 and produced an eye-catching 34 attempts on goal on Burnley’s way to the title.

A look at the schedule offers hope that Dyche’s side could offer us some decent budget options in the short-term – the Clarets are the only team to face four home matches (SWA, LIV, HUL, WAT) in the opening six Gameweeks, while they kept an impressive 20 clean sheets on their way to the Championship title last season, second only to Middlesbrough (22).

    Valencia or Shaw?

Valencia seems more capable of big hauls, and is less injury prone. However, the consensus here is that Shaw is more nailed.

    Does anyone know?

Paredes is selected by 18.8% of teams, but is not getting pitch time for watford... what would that mean for his price?

aint it more likely that he drops instead of getting a rise when people sell him after gw1, and wouldnt it therefore be better to select a 4m defender with like 1% selected by others (if you want a 4m defender to invest elsewhere)?

If someone knows the answer if would be thrilled to hear it, I dont know the system good enough...

Thought: I was looking at my midfield and i'm still having doubts on whether Mkhitaryan is going to start or not. Aside from that, though, i think at the beginning of each season we always end up spending a lot of money in midfield just to downgrade a couple of players after two or three gameweeks.
It seems to me that in the last few seasons early investment in 5.5/6/6.5M midfielders has been key to a great start with some of them becoming season keepers. For example, last season Mahrez was priced at 5.5 and Alli at 5 if i remember correctly, same for Ayew who was priced at 6.5.

I remember starting the season with a midfield formed by Hazard, Sterling, Ramsey, someone like Coutinho or Sigurdsson and Ki as my fifth MF. Apart from Ki, who was priced at 5 or 5.5 and got injured, all the other were miserable failures and i got Alli and Mahrez as soon as possible.

So, right now i'm sure i want Firmino and Alli but aside from them or two big hitters in general, should we really invest that much when we should probably try to identify the cheaper options who could score a great amount of points and increase our team's value at the same time?
It seems we always fall in the same trap and even though i would really like to have Mkhitaryan, i don't know if it's smart to get a 9.5M player whose starting role for the first two games is not 100% sure.

      • 10 Years

There are a lot of 5.5 misses who don't start etc than the hits.

Also just because we had them last season (and cheap forwards the season before) doesn't mean it will happen again this year

As obvious as it sounds i'm looking for value for money with players who are (as much as you can be) guaranteed to start.
Too many names i see bandied about aren't.
Think Mikh will start the majority of games but you can always put him in after a week or two

I believe Vardy is a better pick than Zlatan, and here is why.

Pace: A huge advantage. Man United's build up play has been slow for years. I don't see Jose improving on that vastly. Traditionally a defensive manager, Zlatan will be his main source of goals this sesson, but how many goals will United need to win games with a solid defense? One a lot of the time. Vardy and Leicester thrive on pace on the counter, and without Kante, I believe they will concede more, therefore needing to push for more goals.

Age: Zlatan is at the end of his career. Vardy is not young, but just hitting his peak. He is more hungry, less cocky, and with more to prove.

Fitness: Jose has said "Zlatan is tired" and that says it all. Vardy is rarely injured, and tends to play on even when he is. You will always get 100% from him.

Pens: Vardy is on pens, Zlatan may or may not be.

History: Vardy is proven in this division. I know Zlatan has done it everywhere he goes, but there are plenty of younger and just as highly rated players before him who have failed. And they had better service. Do you really want to double up on United? I think their defenders are good value, and I am not falling for another United double up. He can't chance an all round struggling team with reputation alone.

Price: For an (almost) 35 year old, playing at a team who finished 5th last season, with no Premier League experience, 11.5m is crazy. The 1.5m you save is the difference between Tadic and Redmond. Between Lamella and Eriksen. Or how about Zlatan and Aguero. Is the same amount better than Vardy, than he is Aguero? I actually think Vardy is a bit overpriced, but they should be a simular price, for all the reasons listed above, and that, is ultimately the main swaying point for me.

I hope this helps someone make up their mind.

The only question left in my team is Erikson or Firmino. Can someone explain to me why Firmino is so popular even with 3 away games? Surely we can get him in at gw4?

    2. Merteswagger

Because he may well be up front or certainly the focal point of the attack, arsenal look a shambles at the back, liverpool only seem to show up for big games, firmino showed last season he has the potential to be fixture proof.

I was going 3-5-2 but had Lamela, Redmond and Townsend. Just felt too much risk, 3-4-3 looks more balanced, I am worried about players exploding though and not being able to afford them! 🙁 Deulo v Townsend it is then.

Please tear it apart. I know my subs are weak but making sure I have a strong starting 11 (4 cheap defenders with good fixtures) and can use weekly FT to move players that are cheap and doing well till I use my WC.

    Foster/JAK

    Morgan/Friend/Souare/Amat

    Hazard/Sanchez/Mahrez

    Kun/Vardy/Grey

    SUBS A.Smith/Hojbjerg/Fletcher

Would look to downgrade Mahrez as you have Vardy to a 6/6.5 mid and invest in your 4 mid to a 5.5 and upgrade your defense. will seriously help balance your team

Thanks! Looking for suggestions. Would you upgrade Hojbjerg or Fletcher?

Which defenders would you change. Everything I have read the ones I have will be starting and have decent fixtures.

        Any help is much appreciated.

        1. Merteswagger
          • 11 Years

Either, then use 2m of the 3m you saved from Mahrez on your 4th midfielder ie Hazard/Sanchez/6.5/6.5/4.5

Then you can upgrade Souare and Amat to a 5m and 4.5m

6.5 mids can be a bit punty but Redmond has a lot of love here

Used to play as a winger for Mallorca in the beginning, then eventually stayed further back. A bit of a reverse Gareth Bale I believe, but I don't know that much about his Boro tenure.
