Having analysed those sides who were afforded the most favourable schedules over the first four-to-six Gameweeks yesterday, our attention now turns to those with a tricky start to the upcoming campaign.

New Watford boss Walter Mazzarri faces a tough opening to life in the Premier League, while Liverpool will have to defy some difficult away trips to get their season off to a flier.

Watford

(sot, CHE, ARS, whm, MUN, bur)

Having ended last season with just two wins from their final 12 matches, Watford may find it tough to turn their fortunes around, with the first five Gameweeks seeing them face off against five of last season’s top seven.

The Hornets won six away matches last term, only one less than both Manchester clubs, but will do well to come away with anything from testing trips to Southampton and West Ham.

They did struggle at home against the top teams last season, and with Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United all visiting Vicarage Road, the omens don’t appear particularly bright.

They are, as already mentioned, under new management this season, so Mazzarri, who looks set to utilise his favoured 3-5-2 formation, will hope they can maintain their strong home defensive record, having conceded just 19 times on home turf in 2015/16, less than the likes of Southampton (22) and Man City (21).

Given the quality of upcoming opposition, it’s perhaps best to ignore the claims of Hornets defenders as budget options for our initial 15-man squads. Heurelho Gomes’ potential for save points should keep the stopper’s tally ticking over, though.

Forwards Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo could struggle to justify their new price hikes against the likes of Chelsea and Man United in particular, who are expected to be much improved at the back under Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho respectively.

Liverpool

(ars, bur, tot, LEI, che, HUL)

With just two home matches during the opening six, due to the redevelopment of the Main Stand seeing the Gameweek 2 fixture against Burnley being reversed, the Reds look to be at an immediate disadvantage.

One of those two home matches is also against champions Leicester, who were so impressive defensively during the second half of last season. The visit of Hull to Anfield in Gameweek 6 could well deliver both attacking and defensive returns, though, with the Tigers appearing in turmoil following the departure of Steve Bruce.

Liverpool did register impressive away wins at Stamford Bridge and the Etihad last season, so the trips to Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea may play into the hands of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

There’s no doubt those matches represent a testing start for the Reds, though, so it may perhaps be best to approach investing in Liverpool’s Fantasy assets with caution, with their ceiling not expected to be particularly high during this stretch of the season. Nonetheless, the likes of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane could still produce the goals, with Daniel Sturridge doubtful for the opener.

Defensively, in particular, the prospects don’t appear too promising, with weaknesses still at left-back, while new signing Joel Matip has been struggling with a foot injury – although he did return in Sunday’s 4-0 defeat to Mainz.

Sunderland

(mci, MID, sot, EVE, tot, CPL)

New Sunderland manager David Moyes faces the toughest of introductions, with a daunting visit to the Etihad up first for the Black Cats, while away trips to Southampton and Tottenham do little to brighten the immediate prospects of Sunderland’s Fantasy assets.

All three sides have particularly potent attacks, so the Black Cats’ rearguard doesn’t appear likely to garner any defensive returns on the road.

Sunderland have scored on their last three visits to the Etihad, offering some hope, but Saints and Spurs are likely to be tough to break down based on what we saw last season.

The home clashes against Crystal Palace and, in particular, Middlesbrough are pretty favourable, though, and with Everton also visiting the Stadium of Light, there are at least a couple of decent clashes in which Sunderland players should be able to shine.

Nonetheless, with so many budget options facing most favourable opening schedules, the likes of Vito Mannone and Patrick van Aanholt at the back, in addition to Wahbi Khazri and Jermain Defoe further forward, are unlikely to attract much investment as we wait to see what effect Moyes can have on a side that has battled relegation all too often over the past few years.

Also be wary of…

Hull City
It’s fair to say it’s been a tumultuous pre-season for Hull, and with three difficult home fixtures (LEI, MUN, ARS), along with the Gameweek 6 trip to Anfield, it’s hard to see much appeal in Tigers players for the opening part of the season.

Goals look set to be in short supply against strong defensive sides such as Leicester and Man United, while clean sheets could be a tall order against all four of those opponents.

Trips to Swansea and Burnley in the opening four Gameweeks may offer a glimmer of hope, but in reality the likes of Andrew Robertson, Robert Snodgrass and Abel Hernandez look to have limited potential during the opening weeks of the new season.

Swansea
Francesco Guidolin’s men do open up with two very favourable match-ups (bur, HUL), but given the uncertainty surrounding his likely starting XI due to recent movements in the transfer market and players having not featured in pre-season due to Euro 2016, the Swans may be best ignored for quite some time.

That’s because from Gameweek 3 onwards, their schedule (lei, CHE, sot, MCI, LIV, ars) stiffens up dramatically.

The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson may struggle against some strong defences, then, while clean sheets appear likely to be at a premium over that stretch in light of Ashley Williams’ departure to Everton.

Southampton
On the one hand, Saints do face three very favourable home fixtures (WAT, SUN, SWA) over the opening six Gameweeks, with Sunderland and Swansea both poor on the road for much of last season.

Although the outlook in those matches looks bright from both a defensive and offensive standpoint, with Virgil van Dijk, Dusan Tadic, Shane Long and, potentially, Nathan Redmond, all likely to enjoy some success, trips to Man United, Arsenal and West Ham somewhat curb our initial enthusiasm.

United and Arsenal both won 12 times on home soil last season, with no teams managing more home wins, while the Hammers will be keen to make London Stadium feel like home.

    Pick one:

    A) Haz-4.5 mid-4.0 def

    B) Eriksen-Zaha-Pieters

If B, Zaha and Pieters will probably be benched anyway, but I will have a stronger bench for the upcoming GWs.

If A, My bench will be weaker

    What do you guys say?

you are playing with fire having 2 4.0 defenders.

any week, it is possible you will only have 2 defenders playing, even week 1.

one of them must be upgraded. if you don't have .5 itb, find it.

What are people's thoughts on saving at least £1m in the bank before the season starts? I've always been a 'value player':
-looking for the cheapest route into the big teams' defence
      -finding out-of-position players
-hitching onto a bandwagon (but only if I really want the player anyway) early in order to increase my overall team value
-cashing in on those out of form when I can 'bank' a good amount of profit on them

This time I've picked a decent team for £98m, with £2m ITB to upgrade swiftly if a standout option becomes available in the first two weeks, without having to take points hits... would be interested to hear your thoughts on a) my strategy, and b) my team.

      GW1 GW2
      Courtois Courtois
      Shaw-Stones-Targett-Evans Stones-Shaw-Evans-Amat
      Firminho-Hazard-Mkhitaryan Firminho-Hazard-Mkhitaryan-Deulofeu
      Aguero-Gray-Carroll Aguero-Carroll
(Jak; Deulofeu; Amat; Capoue) (Jak; Gray; Targett; Capoue)

NB It's a shame Swansea are burning in front of our eyes before a ball's been kicked in anger, their opening fixtures had so much potential but I just can't trust Sigurdsson to start/perform in a team without the leaders of last season. Still, I believe it's offered up the only starting 4.0 defender... I might be wrong but willing to gamble, especially with 2.0 ITB

I would rather use my wildcard for major surgery, I don't like leaving funds unused unless there are really cheap options available - which is rare at the beginning of the season.

          • 16 Years

Fair point. I used to use my wildcard right at the beginning of the international break to make the most of players rising at least 0.2m and then subbing them out before the end of the WC so get who I really wanted, but last (two?) season(s) has seen price hikes slow down IMO...

in their position, if they are looking to replace seasoned professionals like Lamine Kone with youngsters, they are going to be in the Championship right quick.

i think Sunderland will try very hard to keep Kone. he trained at Sunderland today, Sunderland rejected Everton's 18 million pound offer, and Kone's agent is looking for a new contract in the wake of Everton's interest.

they should give it to him.

I've got a mental image of Liverpool hitting teams on a rapid break and Mané full steam ahead with little chubbs Firmino huffing and puffing to keep up with the pace. But I need the .5 so just playing it safe.

          poor goalie combo.

Hennessey may start for a couple of weeks, but Mandanda will be Palace's goalie before long. get a better 4.5 starting goalie right now. -- Foster . . . Heaton . . . Valdes, in that order.

Jacu is adequate right now as a backup, since he is Hull's starter.

all else is ok. not the best, in my opinion, but ok.

each of us has to make judgements.

i'm not comfortable with Mahrez right now. he doesn't look right to me. i'm going elsewhere for my 2nd mid.

i think there are better 3rd strikers than Long for the same price, but there are excellent players here who think he is the best one. i just don't.

it's debatable whether the Kun/Ibra combination is too expensive. i am starting to think that maybe it is, though i view it as the safest 1-2 striker pair to start with.

i prefer other 5.0 defenders to Morgan. Fuchs (5.5) is the way into Leicester's defense if you want to be there. (i don't right now).

Gareth McCauley is 37, i think. one of these years, he will see his playing time shrink dramatically. . .could it be this year?

        4. jake_the_peg
          • 15 Years

Hennessey might start the first couple of games, but his position ahead of Mandanda isn't assured. Indeed I think Mandanda is favourite to be Palace's number 1 this season.

The rest of your teams looks strong enough, but I am wary of Long now. He's the most popular 6.5m attacker on the site, and if he fails to score in week 1 he may be transferred out of a lot of sides meaning a potential price drop.

Last season was obviously an oddity in lots of ways, and I fell into a big trap it presented. I built a squad with too many options (and thus benched truckloads of points). In previous seasons - where I did far better - I concentrated on having 2 solid defensive options, with 2 others rotating, and a 4.0 bench fodder defender; four midfielders and a cheap 4.5 starter on the bench; and three strikers. The cheaper midfielder always offered a solid 2 points at worst, and never tempted me to start them. But last season there were so many bandwagons, so many top players undulating in form, lots of midprice options - it was so easy to start gobbling as many players as possible up. Questioning each week whether to bench Mahrez was, clearly, madness. It also meant I took way more hits on transfers.

Too much choice can be a bad thing.

Posted this accidentally on old Article.

Comparing Aguero & Ibra as captain choices.

Just quickly had a look at amount of times Zlatan has scored 2 goals or more in his time at PSG. I counted the numbers myself so they may be inaccurate, but they wouldn't be far off.
        .
        Ibra 3 seasons at PSG
        2 Goals: 20
        3 Goals: 6
        4 Goals: 2

Aguero 4 seasons at Man City
        2 Goals: 17
        3 Goals: 5
        4 Goals: 1
        5 Goals: 1

Now this data isn't really comparable tbf. Ligue 1 is an easier competition + Aguero's tendency to be injured. I think it does show though that they definitely have the potential to be fantastic Captain choices all season.

The gulf between PSG and other teams was the issue. Here united still have to get into that kind of dominance. They may still achieve peak form by mid season. Even then teams won;t fold so easily as in Ligue 1. Plus initially I can see a struggle for goals.

I do agree on the quality of the Ligue one sides. He frequently bagged his 3 goals + hauls against particularly weak sides. I wouldn't back against him doing it against the weaker sides in the prem though. He seems to pray on teams low on confidence, I imagine he would have destroyed Villa last season, just like he destroyed under performing ligue 1 sides.

        Foster Jak
        Terry Shaw Stones Kingsley Amat

        Kun Ibra Gray

trouble brewing in the defense with 2 4.0 defenders. that's playing with fire.

Ramirez too expensive for a 5th mid. Downgrade to 4.5 and use it to upgrade back end of your defense.

Yeah that's what I had before - my thinking is that one or two 4.0m defenders will emerge early on, and in the meantime Terry Shaw and Stones good enough to cover all GWs. Like the idea of having five strong midfielders...

            What about:

            Foster Jak
            Shaw Stones Friend Byram Amat
Hazard Lamela Townsend Tadic Bolasie (assuming he goes to Everton in time)
            Ibra Kun Gray

              • 10 Years
              9 years, 8 months ago

Byram is not nailed either. your 4th defender needs to be nailed on, in case one of your first 3 don't play for some reason. if Friend gets ill on game day, and Amat and Byram don't play, you only have 2.

do some research and find a 4.5 defender who will play week in, week out. there are a bunch.

Yep fair point, I'd assume Byram will keep the new guy out of the team for at least the first few weeks and then move over to right back, but you're right not nailed. Pieters it is...

I am punting on Phillips as well, good opening fixtures with a point to prove. Last time in the prem with QPR he managed 3 goals and 8assists and he didn't even play the whole year. Yes, Pulis tends to be defensive, but I just think he will manage some solid points.
          I would also keep Tadic.

something not right with Mahrez. can't put my finger on it, but i'm going elsewhere to start with. i love him as a player, but he doesn't look like himself in pre-season.

Hey guys, think I'm finally close to finalising. Couple of decisions to make though, would appreciate a RMT.

        Forster - Valdes

        Valencia - Stones - Friend - Amat - ???

        D.Gray - Redmond - ??? - ??? - ???

        Aguero - Vardy - Gray

        Decisions to make:

        A) Azpi, Hazard, Ramsey, Lamela

        B) Pieters, Hazard, Ramsey, Firmino/Eriksen/Alli

        C) Pieters, Alexis, Firmino, Lamela

        D) Super secret fourth option yet to be named
