A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What a predicament I find myself in.

After losing so many points by being stubborn with Michu, Ramsey, Yaya and Mahrez in previous seasons I told myself I'd jump on the first bangwagon, no matter what. Even if Gareth Barry got a brace in GW1, I was going to be all over him, convinced that this season would be his breakthrough season.

However, the first bandwagon, the first brace scorer of the season is Philippe Coutinho. I know him. I've owned him. I know he won't get consistent returns ...

Or do I? How do we know that this isn't his season? Invigorated by a pre-season with Klopp, benefiting from the hard work of others around him, he will find space and find the back of the net on a regular basis this season.

I do not want to be seeing rivals - casuals, most of them - raking in the points as Coutinho fires in his 8th of the season in GW6, finally forcing me to buy him for 1m more than everyone else got him for.

Coutinho. Anyone but him. Even Gareth Barry ...

Coutinho got 130 points in less than 2/3 the minutes of a full season last year. That is pretty damn good.

Nice. Reason I asked is that I'm at 36k, with 64 points (Terry + Haz to play). So 8 points off. Guess it's not accurate due to it being the first GW.

Everton's defence will thrive against lone-striker formations this season, as using three centre backs gives the front-man no space to play in. The introduction of Janssen to partner Kane changed the game.

But Kane owners shouldn't panic - he will find more space against Palace, who are more likely to use a back 4 as they continue their quest for a goal. Janssen should not be needed.

"It's a massive one,'' Bilic replied when asked how big a season it will be for Carroll.

"But we said the same last year. He has done the whole of preseason. OK, we rested him for a couple of games but that was when he needed a rest, it was nothing down to injury.

"When we wanted to sign the kind of striker who is going to score 20 goals per season, last year statistically his goal rate and assist rate and impact rate is 20 goals a season -- minimum.

"But the problem was that because of the number of games he was available it was not 20 goals, it was nine. We hope this season he is going to be injury-free.''

when you spend 4 FTs on Carroll like I did last season, it's not very fun.

2 FTs to bring him in, 2 FTs to get him out after injury. I did get some points but one could easily argue those FTs could have been spent elsewhere more efficiently.

    Foster Jaku
    Stones Valencia Williams Friend Amat
    Haz Firmino Lamela Delf Capoue
    Kubra Long

Thinking Long to Caroll or Negredo. Happy to keep everyone else. Don't mind keeping Long even.

Ibra is a problem. Normally I would be happy not to have him just yet but that ownership is frightening. Kane or Ibra is my choice this week. I think it'll have to be the latter.

2 shots on goal was it? Not good. Playing defensively I should get Ibra due to ownership or going with my gut could easily lift me up the ranks if I could decide on another replacement which probably wouldn't be Kane. Tricky decision. I'm not that keen in Rio btw for the same reasons as Ibra really.

In my opinion Aguero, Kane and Ibra will all score similar and be competing for golden boot this season. Pick one, pick two, or pick all three, but please don't justify not picking one of them by saying they are not that good, lol.

Such comments are stupid and unfounded, and all they do is make you look silly.

This has been a great gameweek, sitting on 26 points with Hazard (C) and Ayew to play. :\

Thing is, on paper should be happy with my team but only Ibra scored me any actual points with Defoe (8) and McAuley (7) sat on my bench.

    Heaton (4)

    Valencia (2), Van Dijk (1), Dann (2)

    Firmino (2), Deulofeu (2), Tadic (2) + Ayew & Hazard

    Gray (2) and Ibra (9)

On another day they would have bagged me a truckload of points based on watching the games but with so many "nearly's" it's hard not to get concerned and make rash decisions! 😀 Only have to do the usual and hope next week is different but as is the way with FPL it'll probably be a case of same again next week while all the rivals pull further ahead!

    It's a frustrating game isn't it? 😀

Same here.. had Redmond.. broke my team to fetch the extra 1.5 for Tadic.. finally got 2pts and Redmond scored.
Same for LFC cover.. paid 0.5 more for Firmino instead of Couts.. was excited seeing him start up front.. LIV scored 4.. Firmino got 2ts 🙁

Yup, sums it up really doesn't it! You try to be smart and it all goes out the window - I took Barkley out for Deulofeu on Friday so I could squeeze Tadic in... Both worked out well. 😀

I think you have a very good team and was just unlucky.

Who are your other defenders? I'd be a little worried about VVD and Dann next gw, but your attackers are solid imo and all have good fixtures for gw2.

Unlucky score this gw but plenty of time to make it up and you have the players to do that for you no doubt.

Stay calm and trust in the side you picked. 😉

A lot you looking at stats about how Zlatan had bad stats. Zlatan defies stats. Just need to have a look at his contribution to the game to realize this. I'll take you lads through this.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmajMI0fq4Q

    0:24
He's not got a shot but United are just about learning how to use him. He's quality who won't need that many chances as we've already seen. He tanks 2 defenders in the box here and he's going to keep on repeating this week on week. Can't be dominated physically by any defender in the league.

    1:30
Set up Rooney easily for a goal and should have buried it. Rooney decided to dive instead.

    1:49
Exquisite touch to set Rooney up easily again who again misses a great chance

    2:02
    That free kick.

There was another instance where he was through on goal and just for fun decided to square it to Mkhi instead.

So his stats, whichever there are are super quality and he almost affects goal scoring directly.

(@WR Roo is a great option but i just thing Zlatan is incredibly quality. His shots outside the box as good as shots inside the box. Being a United fan, its a dream to have your marquee player be a great FPL option) and watching him week in week out is a pleasure.

Makes me wet, this Zlatan lad. Don't look at his stats. Look at his quality.

And United are only just learning to get out of LVG mode and use Zlatan. Mou already spoke about how he wanted United to play more incisively and directly to use Zlatan.

      He's only going to improve.

Won't be long before everyone has him in their team.

Some are in denial because they hate MU and are trying to convince themselves he's just not that good. They will either change their opinion very soon and deny that they ever said such things, or they will remain stubborn and stick to their guns whilst everyone with Ibra racks up the points, lol.

It will be fun to watch Ibra and the reactions that follow.

      2.5 games, 3 goals, 3 bonus.

      Terrible player right? Lol.

I'm a MU supporter and hate Man City with a passion, however Aguero is the first player in my team each season. Why? Because I know he's a class player who scores goals, and I don't let my hate for him and his team cloud my judgement when it comes to fpl.

I'd recommend MU haters to approach Ibra the same way or get left behind.

      Good luck! 😉
