A stunning performance from Philippe Coutinho at the Emirates overshadows even Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Premier League debut as Liverpool hit four in Arsenal’s backyard. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches.

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We thought the debate on Jurgen Klopp’s midfield was settled. However, Coutinho’s display at the Emirates already threatens to change matters and have us reconsider Roberto Firmino as our top target.

Coutinho simply sparkled, fetching a pair of breathtaking goals and is likely to end the Gameweek as the leading points scorer. He is already officially first transfer bandwagon having soared to the top of the “transfers in” ranks.

Worryingly, he limped off in the second-half having dealt the damage, although Jurgen Klopp has since confirmed that his withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a hamstring injury.

We’ve always had concerns on Coutinho’s consistency as an FPL asset but should he profit from the trip to Burnlye in Gameweek 2, he will already become difficult to ignore.

Sadio Mane
Mane also came out of the Arsenal victory with plaudits. A superb solo effort capped an effervescent performance and offered a reminder of his explosive qualities. Mane looked at home in Klopp’s line-up on the right of a front three and, like Coutinho, if he delivers again at Burnley, his stock will close further on Firmino.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
It was almost inevitable that Ibrahimovic would score on his Premier League debut. Again, the Swede often dropped deep at Bournemouth and both his attempts on goal were from outside the box. That won’t bother his 42% ownership or the 21% who handed him the Gameweek captaincy.

Wayne Rooney
While Ibrahimovic will get more attention, the United skipper emerged from the Vitality Stadium with a goal in a busy display of some promise. We’re not convinced just yet but, based on these early signs, it’s possible that Rooney could outperform his 9.0 price tag.

Anthony Martial
Another stand-out performer in Jose Mourinho’s ranks – Martial looked sharp and positive on the left-flank and came out with two assists and a share of the maximum bonus. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan used from the bench once again, if Paul Pogba’s raids are curtailed by a role in the double pivot, Martial could yet be the most attractive of the United midfield.

Antonio Valencia
Once again the Ecuadorian offered far more going forward than Luke Shaw on the opposite flank, confirming that he is our favoured route into the United backline. Eric Bailly was impressive but Valencia’s quality going forward is enough to keep him firmly in place at the top of of Watchlist, despite United’s failure to earn a shut-out.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
Let’s not panic. However, there’s no doubt that the performances of Coutinho and Mane took a nibble out of our confidence in Firmino. It’s possible that we have to live with every Liverpool midfield asset taking turns to come to the fore. However, if Klopp’s side win at Burnley in Gameweek 2, Firmino really needs to get amongst the points to restore our faith.

The Arsenal Defence
The injury troubles were well publicised and we expected today’s encounter to test Arsenal’s resolve. However, the nature of the Liverpool performance indicated that it could take several weeks for Arsene Wenger to restore stability. Hector Bellerin at 6.5 and with 30% ownership already looks a liability.

Alberto Moreno
If it wasn’t clear that James Milner was Klopp’s first choice at left-back heading into today’s game, Moreno’s performance at Arsenal fixed that. The Spaniard’s desperate lunge on Theo Walcott went unpunished when the penalty was saved but, just a minute later, Moreno was exposed for Arsenal’s opener. He is surely destined for cameo roles this season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Your comment is rubbish and unfair to the person asking the question.

If you didn't watch the match don't comment. Just because a player doesn't score points doesn't mean he wasn't involved in the match.

And if you did watch the game and thought he wasn't involved, then you know nothing about football and shouldn't be answering questions full stop!

Haven't checked the stats but watched the game.

Heavily involved. Far more likely to be in the points regularly than Mane.

Firm v Cout will be a real debate if Cout maintains fitness for a while (which seems unlikely)

Don't know about his stats but watched the game.

As usual he was heavily involved but more in starting the attacks rather than being on the end of them. A lot of assisting the assister type work.

A little worryingly was his positioning in the false 9 role. Often dropped quite deep to get on the ball and looked to hit Coutinho and Mane in the more advanced positions.

When he was getting more forward he seemed to drift into the wide positions whilst Coutinho and Mane took up the more central positions as they often looked to cut in regularly.

He did make some silly turnovers in possession at times, however overall it was a solid performance where he worked hard and was just unlucky not to be in the points.

On another day he could easily of had 2 assists and even a goal.

      His points will definitely come.

4 shots none on target but 1 was deflected. Coutinho 1st PL free kick I thought commentators said and great run for a turned in goal but no reason to think Firmino won't outscore him based on 1 game against makeshift Arse fence

Anyone seen if a rival has made a transfer yet?

Season before, we could see all transfer data.....TV/ITB/WC active/Transfer made etc
Last season they dropped visibility on WC active and transfers made(?), I think, but could still work it out from TV & ITB changes

This season I reckon all transfer data will remain invisible to rivals until GW updates.

    Yes or No?

One thing which certainly peaked my interest is Mou didn't sub Ibra off. Considering a large part of the reason for not owning him is concerns over his age and ability to cope with high pace of the PL, this looks a good sign.

Seeing as we're in Europa rather than the CL too, can see it being more the case of Rashford/Depay etc being used as starters early on for Thursdays. Hopefully Ibra gets the nod as pen taker (he really should), and that'll be enough for him to become a permanent fixture in my team (and most I'd imagine)

      He's 34 not 76! Lol.

He returned some of the highest and strongest numbers in his first medical at the club.

He's still at the peak of his game, and regardless of what people think of the French league, he comes to MU on the back of his most successful season EVER!

Age is just another excuse the haters mention to convince themselves and others he can't perform in the 'tougher' EPL.

In my opinion it's disrespectful to the man and all he's already achieved in a ridiculously successful career. 😉

Martial, Rooney and Ibra all look great options for this season. Thinking of a possible double up at some point. However, at the minute I think Ibra is the safest option simply due to ownership. Pretty sure I'll bring him in for Vardy this week.

Awful start but resisting the urge to do anything rash with this lot:

    Heaton / Foster
    Shaw / Stones / McAuley / Friend / Amat
    Hazard / Firmino / Tadic / Townsend / Fletcher
    Aguero / Vardy / Gray

Stick or twist? Have 1 mil ITB to play with and tempted with Lamela but for who?

A very similar team to mine, I have the same front three and Hazard, Tadic and Firmino. I'm thinking of doing Tadic and Vardy to Redmond and Ibra, but with 1m ITB your midfield downgrade could be a little less hefty.

I'm assuming it's because some people have joined after the deadline and are therefore on zero points, and not counted towards GW1?

Southampton: 24 attempts on goal. 1 chance conceded in the box.

I didn´t see the game. Were they as good as the stats imply?

No. We looked all over the place for the first 30 minutes or so. Seemed to sort everything out for the rest of the game but it wasn't as dominant as stats suggest.

I think my only real dud pick was Stones (Vardy fluffed everything but at least had some great chances).

I know many will argue that Pep will keep a lot of cleanies once everything clicks, but I just can't see them getting more than 10. The system is hugely flawed with the current personnel. Need about 5-6 new players, world class ones at that, to make it work. Even then, there is too much pace and quality in the PL for that high line + fancy CAMs everywhere not to get exposed.

Stones is the best route there imo, but not a route I want to be taking. Coleman in as soon as he's fit if Everton maintain a back 3

Only four attempts conceded in the box though... second best to southampton.

Yeah, that will happen a lot. But the chances opposition will get against City will be golden

But I think there will be huge improvement with Kompany/Otamendi instead of Kolarov as a CB. Just like Arsenals defence will be very much better in a few weeks.

Potentially. But playing Fernandinho as the only CM is just ridiculous for the PL. Even if/when Gundogan comes in, can't see how that will improve things much.

Pep has to adapt his tactics. Too stubborn to do so though I reckon

got sucked into the 5mil city defender too but he's a decent enough placeholder until the best option becomes obvious (probably williams at everton if he BAPS early on?)

Yeah, WIlliams will be the man if Coleman is out for a while. Coleman at RWB is probably the best option in the game though

Yeah, Everton look tasty. But I have a niggling feeling it is hard to trust Everton defensively. They have invested good and strengthened the defence though. But I will wait and see first.

Probably, but no idea who for. Not keen on a Chelsea double up unless they shine tonight, Lukaku could be interesting if he's fit.

Is a .1 drop that bad?

I'm unsure whether I will or not. I just think he's worth one one game before looking at other options

            Yes

It might aswell be a 0.5 because the awkwardness it gives is unreal.

At this point a 0.1 drop might as well be a 0.5 drop. You're priced out of an entire bracket of players.

Hi! Should I make some changes? Id like to get Baines or Barkle but who out?

    Foster / Heaton
    Valencia / Stones / Pieters / Friend / McAuley
    Townsend / Hazard / Redmond / Lamela / Feghouli
    Gray / Kun / Vardy

I'd wait till the end of the gwk. Feghooly and Haz still to play. I'd give everyone at least two games, ideally three if you are planning a later wc.

    Terrible start.

26 points. But with Hazard, Ayew and Carroll to go.

I'm staying patient - But Vardy will surely be the first to leave my team if he fails again next week.

Can't beleive I'd never thought about Rodders when picking my team. Good run of fixtures up coming IMO

Watson needs to leave my team, Rodders is a good option for me
