Having only scored twice in their opening three Premier League matches, West Brom addressed the need to add further attacking options on Monday with the signing of Tottenham midfielder Nacer Chadli for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £13 million.

Speaking about the addition of the Belgian international, Baggies boss Tony Pulis revealed his happiness at being able to add real quality to his squad:

“He’s a top, top player and I’m delighted we’ve got him. I said last week that these signings all had to be about players who would improve our squad – and Nacer does precisely that.”

Chadli, meanwhile, discussed his preferred position before revealing his fitness is up to scratch ahead of Gameweek 4:

“I think my best position is out on the left or maybe under the striker. But I can play anywhere in midfield if asked. This is a great challenge and I want to show my quality to the fans and to the club. I just want to help the team win as many games as possible. I watched the games against Middlesbrough and it was a positive game. Albion created good chances but didn’t score. But I know from playing against them how very well organised they are and how tough they can be to beat. I’ve trained now for six days a week for two months so I am physically fit. I just need some game time to be at 100 per cent.”

The History

Born in Liege, Belgium, Chadli joined Standard Liege at the age of nine, and spent most of his youth career there before moving to Dutch second division club AGOVV Apeldoorn as an 18-year-old in 2007.

Chadli spent three seasons with his new club and, after producing 29 goals and 20 assists in 95 matches, was acquired by FC Twente in the summer of 2010.

The Belgian had a very successful first season with the-then Dutch champions, scoring three goals in six Champions League appearances, including twice against Tottenham. In his three campaigns with Twente, Chadli bagged 40 goals and 26 assists in 123 appearances.

He was on the move again in the summer of 2013, this time completing a £7 million transfer to Tottenham. His first season at White Hart Lane saw the Belgian struggle, though, managing just one goal and three assists in 24 league outings.

Chadli found favour under new Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino the following year, and ended the season with an impressive 11 goals and five assists from 35 league appearances.

His progress last season was curtailed by the form of Erik Lamela and the emergence of Dele Alli, though. With just 10 of his 29 appearances arriving as a first-teamer, Chadli managed only three goals and two assists.

A dual citizen of both Morocco and Belgium, Chadli did represent Morocco once, in a friendly against Northern Ireland in 2010. As it was not deemed a competitive match, a year later he decided to turn out for Belgium, and made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Finland in February 2011. He has appeared 32 appearances for his country, scoring four goals and providing as many assists, although he was left out of the squad for Euro 2016.

The Prospects

While Chadli’s career stalled at Tottenham over the last 12 months, he should offer a major upgrade on the attacking options Pulis currently has at his disposal. The Belgian is a capable dribbler, technically proficient and has an eye for goal, while he’s also strong in the air.

With Pulis generally favouring either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 formation, Chadli is perhaps favourite to move ahead of the likes of Craig Gardner and James McClean in the pecking order at the Hawthorns and cement a role on the left.

As the Belgian’s comments above suggest, he could also stake a claim for the central support spot behind Salomon Rondon, placing question marks over the pitch time of Saido Berahino. Elsewhere in the Baggies attack, summer signing Matt Phillips looks likely to keep his place on the right.

Available at 6.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Chadli is more expensive that Phillips (5.5) but may well prove to be worthy of that extra outlay – he averaged 4.5 points per game (ppg) in 2014/15, highlighting his potential if handed enough pitch time. Indeed, his 36.4% goal involvement that season was greater than any Spurs midfielder.

The problem lies in the fact that Baggies attackers have consistently held little Fantasy appeal since Pulis arrived at the Hawthorns. Somewhat encouragingly, they have registered as many shots from inside the box (24) as Tottenham so far this season, but only created three big chances in what have been a trio of fairly favourable match-ups.

Although the schedule (bou, WHM, sto, sun) remains pretty appealing in the short-term, Chadli will need to convince us he’s worth of considering in the mid-price bracket, particularly when the likes of West Ham’s Michail Antonio is just 0.6 more expensive and has some fine fixtures to follow.

Certainly, West Brom look to have a talented player on their hands, but until we see evidence of Pulis’ side having a more attacking outlook, it’s members of the Baggies backline who should remain the most appealing picks in our 15-man squads. Pulis has already steered his reliable defence to two clean sheets this season – a tally matched only by Man United in the first three Gameweeks.

Who do you think has the most balanced squad in the PL right now?

City for me. A great keeper, two decent CBs bar Kompany now, Silva doing good in the midfield, and loads, loads of wingers - Sane, Nolito, Sterling, Navas, KDB. And well, arguably the best #10 and #9 of the league.

United bought big, but I think their defence and wing positions could be a worry as the season goes on...

      You're joking?
You praise City defence: "A great keeper, two decent CBs bar Kompany now," but worry about United defence. Bravo great keeper vs DDG?? Stones vs Smalling?? Otamendi vs Bailly? Kompany always injured and he was awful last season when played, he passed it.

City defence are worse by far compare to United defence

I still think Chelsea's defense is suspect and Costa is a walking booking under these new rules. It's absolutely ridiculous that he didn't get sent off in both their starting games and I hope the refs were reprimanded.

I think City and United have the two most balanced squads once their first choice line-ups are fit and firing. Spurs close in behind with similar caveat.

..by Chelsea's defense I specifically mean their backline. I don't think Luiz is a good CB at all. Kante should protect them but still.

        1. Postman Ty
          • 11 Years

Saying that Luiz isn't a good CB isn't an opinion, it's scientific fact by now. I agree the defence isn't quite where I want it to be yet but I think your fantasy mind is taking too much priority over what realistically matters for Costa. He'll get lots of cards but he doesn't actually get sent off much and he will also get lots of goals. If he does manage to get himself suspended Batshuayi has proven that he's more than capable of leading the line. I'm very happy with our new signings, very efficient spending (other than Luiz).

Well I just meant walking booking because they've tightened the rules on talking to the ref and he does it a lot. But maybe Conte will help him out there.

I think you guys did quite well in the window as well though I don't think much of Alonso either (yet).

I am not worried by our defence anymore. Zouma is a beast , Terry reliable . luiz is Cahill's replacement. Even if we disagree whether he is a world class defender , he is a world class player imo.

My only worry is that Willian wont score/assist enough goals and there will be too much pressure on Haz/Costa

People who haven't activated their WC yet, what is the plan? Use it if Kun & Gray get banned? Use it if a few injuries arise before GW4? Saving it to get Kun back in? Just wondering what the thought processes of the different people are...

I won't use it even if Kun and Gray get banned. I will just take a -4 hit. I may even take a -8 hit if necessary. Every year I do the wildcard during the first international break and always regret it. There is still so much unsettled in lineups. I always wind up taking hits to try to fix the mess. I would rather take a hit or two now and wildcard in a few weeks when things are clearer. My thinking is that I will save money in the long run and get a better team from the wildcard. And if I want to get Kun back in, it will be easier with the wildcard.

Side note, for everyone who is WCing, I have been thinking, and it is much easier to get rid of Ibra, rather than trying to bring him back in. Also, if Aguero is also banned, you need to bring him back in as well. Just a thought..

I'm not sure what you mean, do you mean it's worth having only one of Ibra or Aguero? If so, i fully agree with that.

      1. The Devil Wears Prada

That is partly what I'm saying, as the team looks much more balanced with only one of Ibra/Aguero. But at the same time, if Ibra goes and scores a brace against City, the people who took him out on their wildcard will have a difficult time without taking hits to bring him back in, while also thinking about bringing Aguero back in (if he does get banned)

        1. Salah’s Sonnet
          • 14 Years

Ahhh yes, i agree with that as well. I have also had a good think around this, and once aguero comes back i've decided to bring aguero in for him, at least thats what i'm sticking to at the moment. It just can't be done to have those two all season, and as the season goes on, it will be harder and harder to ignore the midfield big hitters.

There's a lot of talk going around and people seem to want to jump on the big hitting midfielders, especially now that there are quite a few good options up front with the likes of Costa, Lukaku, Benteke, Bony, Defoe and the like.

The headache will come if Ibra keeps playing well.. I'm hoping Rooney/Lukaku will score similar points so I can drop Ibra sooner or later. However, as of this moment, his ownership is just too high for me to drop him, and will be very difficult to bring him back.

I'm hoping that Mkhi becomes a starter sooner rather than later (it's inevitable, he's world class) and I can just get him instead. think he'll be a baps hog too

Nobody's dropping Ibra with Aguero heard out right now..he's owned by 57.5% of the league.

    What changes should i make?

1FT and .8 in the bank.

Thinking Aguero (If he's out) -> Costa / Lukaku

    Schmeichel
    Valencia / Evans / Stones
    Hazard / Redmond / Firmino / Bolasie
    Zlatan / Grey / Aguero

    Jaku / Capoue / Pieters / Friend

    Thanks people.

I've gone off Lukaku as a replacement, i feel more confident with Defoe. Costa is still a good option from those two though, just.

Why have you gone off Lukaku? I had a look at his stats and he is getting some good opportunities. I think he could explode at any minute.

Just because it's Lukaku really, has always trolled me, and the fact that he's not on pens, i've opted for Baines, clean sheets and pens in his locker, and Defoe on pens too.

i like it, same midfield as myself, just hojbjerg instead of fletcher. Only squabble from me is prefer someone else to negredo. Also have a route back to Aguero.

Created a new team and I'm only gonna allow myself to use players who have moved club this season (inc. all future transfers) and will set up a league against myself to see how it gets on. Here it is:

    Bravo, Valdes
    Mustafi, Luiz, Bailly, Williams, Maksuaku
    Nolito, Mane, Bolasie, Pereyra, Redmond
    Ibrahimovic, Bony, Benteke

comes to 99.9 million. Actually think its quite solid despite the midfield being extremely punty.

That's actually a good team, but you'll suffer because no Aguero and no Hazard et cetera.

maybe not this week (even that's not certain) but Mkhi is a destined XI fixture. he's a BEAST. Mourinho just easing him in and had his hands tied by Mata performing well

So you mean Mata will be dropped as soon as he has a bad game? That's harsh... I'd say Martial has been more anonymous recently.

Heard we were looking for a winger entire time, even bid for players like Mahrez, and then, at the end, we let go two of the best wingers bar Sanchez in our squad - Joel Campbell and Serge Gnabry, and yet, we kept Walcott and blocked Sanogo's loan deal.

I'd love to know how drunk Wenger + our staff is when they sit to make decisions like this...

    Hello DZ

Any tips, ideas, opinions would be much appreciated on my current WC team:

    Heaton Pickford
    Valencia Baines Evans Souare Amat
    Hazard Ozil Nolito Antonio Capoue
    Ibra Benteke Defoe
    0.9m ITB

    Areas I'm unsure about are:
Is McAuley worth the 0.1m over Evans?
Souare is a 4.5m placeholder, thoughts on him, Pieters @ 4.4m hopefully, Friend, A. Smith?
    Ozil vs Sanchez
    Nolito vs Sterling
Antonio vs Barkley, Tadic, Willian or someone else

    1. Jayblue
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 6 months ago

mcauley is worth it. he gets more bonus and is more involved in the goals
about ozil vs sanchez. nobody really knows but if you ask me, ozil is more consistent when he gets into that form. not that sanchez is any worse. but if you need to tweak the rest of your team, ozil is 1.4 million cheaper
sterling has some serious potential. i'd go with him
i'd say willian but you already have hazard. so go with barkley. i wouldnt suggest tadic. southampton look clueless since the beginning

    foster
    terry baines valencia
    hazard ozil barkley capoue
    zlatan negredo costa

    bad choice?

Looks very decent for a none WC team. I might be worried about Terry with the inclusion of Luiz and Zouma returning but that's about it for now. As well as Jaku but playing Foster every week should be fine.

    WC team

    Foster (Pickford)
    Valencia Masuaku Gibson (Pieters Robertson)
    Mane Sterling Hazard Ozil (Fletcher)
    Ibrahimovic Benteke Bony

    0 ITB

Planning to go with 2 mid-priced strikers since there are a lot of alternatives also (Defoe, Negredo, Zaza? Baston?) If Man City continues to score at the same rate maybe double the midfield with Nolito-Sterling or Silva-Sterling. I know not having Kun feels suicidal but i think this year because of Pep and
4-1-4-1 formation City goals are gonna be more evenly spread through the mids and forwards compared to Utd where Ibra will be the main outlet.
