Having only scored twice in their opening three Premier League matches, West Brom addressed the need to add further attacking options on Monday with the signing of Tottenham midfielder Nacer Chadli for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £13 million.

Speaking about the addition of the Belgian international, Baggies boss Tony Pulis revealed his happiness at being able to add real quality to his squad:

“He’s a top, top player and I’m delighted we’ve got him. I said last week that these signings all had to be about players who would improve our squad – and Nacer does precisely that.”

Chadli, meanwhile, discussed his preferred position before revealing his fitness is up to scratch ahead of Gameweek 4:

“I think my best position is out on the left or maybe under the striker. But I can play anywhere in midfield if asked. This is a great challenge and I want to show my quality to the fans and to the club. I just want to help the team win as many games as possible. I watched the games against Middlesbrough and it was a positive game. Albion created good chances but didn’t score. But I know from playing against them how very well organised they are and how tough they can be to beat. I’ve trained now for six days a week for two months so I am physically fit. I just need some game time to be at 100 per cent.”

The History

Born in Liege, Belgium, Chadli joined Standard Liege at the age of nine, and spent most of his youth career there before moving to Dutch second division club AGOVV Apeldoorn as an 18-year-old in 2007.

Chadli spent three seasons with his new club and, after producing 29 goals and 20 assists in 95 matches, was acquired by FC Twente in the summer of 2010.

The Belgian had a very successful first season with the-then Dutch champions, scoring three goals in six Champions League appearances, including twice against Tottenham. In his three campaigns with Twente, Chadli bagged 40 goals and 26 assists in 123 appearances.

He was on the move again in the summer of 2013, this time completing a £7 million transfer to Tottenham. His first season at White Hart Lane saw the Belgian struggle, though, managing just one goal and three assists in 24 league outings.

Chadli found favour under new Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino the following year, and ended the season with an impressive 11 goals and five assists from 35 league appearances.

His progress last season was curtailed by the form of Erik Lamela and the emergence of Dele Alli, though. With just 10 of his 29 appearances arriving as a first-teamer, Chadli managed only three goals and two assists.

A dual citizen of both Morocco and Belgium, Chadli did represent Morocco once, in a friendly against Northern Ireland in 2010. As it was not deemed a competitive match, a year later he decided to turn out for Belgium, and made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Finland in February 2011. He has appeared 32 appearances for his country, scoring four goals and providing as many assists, although he was left out of the squad for Euro 2016.

The Prospects

While Chadli’s career stalled at Tottenham over the last 12 months, he should offer a major upgrade on the attacking options Pulis currently has at his disposal. The Belgian is a capable dribbler, technically proficient and has an eye for goal, while he’s also strong in the air.

With Pulis generally favouring either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 formation, Chadli is perhaps favourite to move ahead of the likes of Craig Gardner and James McClean in the pecking order at the Hawthorns and cement a role on the left.

As the Belgian’s comments above suggest, he could also stake a claim for the central support spot behind Salomon Rondon, placing question marks over the pitch time of Saido Berahino. Elsewhere in the Baggies attack, summer signing Matt Phillips looks likely to keep his place on the right.

Available at 6.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Chadli is more expensive that Phillips (5.5) but may well prove to be worthy of that extra outlay – he averaged 4.5 points per game (ppg) in 2014/15, highlighting his potential if handed enough pitch time. Indeed, his 36.4% goal involvement that season was greater than any Spurs midfielder.

The problem lies in the fact that Baggies attackers have consistently held little Fantasy appeal since Pulis arrived at the Hawthorns. Somewhat encouragingly, they have registered as many shots from inside the box (24) as Tottenham so far this season, but only created three big chances in what have been a trio of fairly favourable match-ups.

Although the schedule (bou, WHM, sto, sun) remains pretty appealing in the short-term, Chadli will need to convince us he’s worth of considering in the mid-price bracket, particularly when the likes of West Ham’s Michail Antonio is just 0.6 more expensive and has some fine fixtures to follow.

Certainly, West Brom look to have a talented player on their hands, but until we see evidence of Pulis’ side having a more attacking outlook, it’s members of the Baggies backline who should remain the most appealing picks in our 15-man squads. Pulis has already steered his reliable defence to two clean sheets this season – a tally matched only by Man United in the first three Gameweeks.

TM, do you know of an easy way to see ALL the BPS for each match? The "Details" link/tab on the main site used to come in handy for that. Now it's only the top five for each team, I think.

Thoughts on this WC defence. Saves me £0.5m from the side I started with.

    Pickford - Jaku
    Valencia - Baines - Masuaku - Evans - Pieters

Wouldn't be planning on selling any unless injuries arrive. Front line will include Kun, Ibra, Hazard, Ozil & then £23.1m to spend on the remaining 4 positions, once everything has settled back to normal.

    A) Do you have a specific plan in place to bring back Aguero?
    or
    B) Are you having 2FT's for when he returns and make a decision then?

Pieters from Stoke. They haven't had a great defence so far but Butland will be back soon and Martins Indi should shore them up. FDR rating of >2 in 5 of their next 7 gameweeks as well.

Right, sorry for the very long and rather boring post but this has been 'doing my head in' all week and so I have finally taken the time to compute the numbers over a potential 0.1 saving.

Like many others I have wildcarded this week and after making all my current planned transfers I have exactly 10.9 left for a midfielder slot which is currently being held by Alexis.

However I have already decided that I would rather have Ozil at 9.5 and keep the 1.4 ITB for a possible future Ibra to Kun upgrade however this has given me a dilemma.

Alexis didn't rise tonight but is forecast to rise imminently however Ozil also looks like he will rise before the next deadline (although NTI is much lower). Note that this is the only free slot in my team, all the other midfielders are already locked in with price rises (Hazard, Capoue etc) ie it is pointless selling them to buy them back at a higher cost.

So I have Alexis locked in for now, but what should I do once he rises and then Ozil looks like he will rise too (in between the Alexis rises) ? Looking at the current NTI I actually think Alexis will double rise before the next deadline but Ozil will only single rise.

So using this assumption I have laid out my options as either
    A) Buy Alexis @ 10.9, Sell at 11.1 (after double rise) which gives me 11.0 however Ozil now costs 9.6 (after single rise) so I have 1.4 ITB
    B) Buy Ozil @ 9.5 (will be worth 9.6 after the rise though) and also have 1.4 ITB
Important: In both instances I now have 1.4 cash ITB it is just the purchase price that is different.

The table below then details my Selling Price (SP) for Ozil at the different Purchase Prices (PP)

    Ozil SP 9.4 9.5 9.6 9.7 9.8
    A) PP 9.6. 9.4 9.5 9.6 9.6 9.7
    B) PP 9.5. 9.4 9.5 9.5 9.6 9.6

In the example above then if Ozil rises to 9.6 or 9.8 or indeed 10.0 and I choose to sell him at that price then I will be an additional 0.1 better off having bought Ozil at 9.6 rather than 9.5 ie choosing A) over B).

However there is always the risk that Alexis doesn't double rise (for example by getting injured whilst on International duty) and it could be too late to switch to Ozil at 9.5 if he had already risen to 9.6, in that case I would be worst off.

Think I will stick to Alexis for now and then decide on the night of the Ozil rise whether to switch or not unless anybody has got any better ideas or if I have got my numbers wrong ?

If you're certain that you want Ozil in your final team then the only reason to have Sanchez (or any other temporary 'place holder') would be if you think he (Sanchez) will rise twice before Ozil rises once. If you don't think that will happen just put Ozil into your team now.

    Dont be fooled by Hull

Latest talk is that Hull are much better than we thought, they stood up against Leicester , Swansea and Utd.
In a couple of weeks Liverpool have them at Anfield and i was cautioned not to go overboard
on Liverpool as Hull are actually good.

However looking at the stats does not back up this assertion.
Hull have conceded an average 23 shots per match, higher

Well Swansea were not up to much, they had plenty of chances but with a new striker who did not have his shooting boots on they failed to take advantage.
Leicester in GW1 were also far off their best, and Hull at home on their season debut naturally played like men possessed. Even so Vardy had a ton of chances but failed to take advantage.
United, had plenty of opportunity too, and also failed to capitalise

"Hull have conceded an average 23 shots per match, higher
than any other team in the premier league."

This seems like a silly stat. It's clearly not about this season and under new management, why compare to previous seasons then?

Worth noting that Hull have conceded 11 attempts in the box/game, which puts them tied 2nd worst, but 10 teams have conceded 8+ (rounded) and 12 of those shots conceded came from outside of the box, 2 more than 2nd placed Burnley and 4 more than 4th placed Watford...which clearly skews your assumption some

I am strictly casual and not a stats man, but Curtis Davis is in my wc team for a few reasons-
          heart/nailed /possessed/baps/decent placeholder
Hull have a long way to go before they're down, and we don't really have any form to go by in 3 wks..

I think Curtis Davies is a fantastic player in real life but I think he will be rubbish for FPL as he will be let down for clean sheets by the other weaker players in the Hull side and at 5.0 rather than 4.5 I wouldn't have him for his goal scoring ability alone.

Because I'm not overly concerned by conceded shots from outside the box as a measurement for defensive frailty and they were running on fumes when it came to squad composition due to injury

I'm not saying they're not fodder, I'm just saying you shouldn't take anything away from their results so far

You compare them with Watford and Burnley. Both sides just conceded Three each in the previous Gameweek which is what you would expect with those kind of stats. If Hull continue along the same path it is only a matter of time before the same happens to them.

I think they have done well so far but the concern is despite the new signings their lack of any quality strength in depth, a few injuries to key players like Curtis Davies or Snodgrass and I think they will soon be found out.

conceding only 2 goals from 69 shots is the definition of a "bad beat".

they should concede 2-4 goals per game if this is true (watched only GW1).

To those who have WC'd this week, presumably to get an Arsenal mid, what's the plan GW6 when Liverpool's fixtures turn good? With most of the budget invested in Aguero Ibra Hazard Ozil/Sanchez there's no room for a decent 3rd midfielder without dropping one of them mentioned

If you know who Mandanda is you should know he definitely deserves a place in the starting 11. He's a France international capped keeper won player of the year last season at his club. He's better and much more experienced than Hennessey in my opinion.
