Diego Costa scores twice as Eden Hazard bring home a one-point return. Leroy Fer strengthens his claim as a budget midfielder, whilst Stephen Kingsley seems to have convinced Francesco Guidolin he’s a worthy starter. Here’s the Stock Check following today’s events..

On the Rise

Diego Costa
Whilst Eden Hazard offered us nothing more than a yellow card, Costa maintained his momentum under Antonio Conte by netting both of the Blues’ goals at the Liberty.

Over 362,000 FPL managers turned to Costa as a result of Sergio Aguero’s suspension last week and today’s display means is the only forward to score or assist in all four Gameweeks.

Conte has failed to curb the Spain international’s penchant for falling foul of referees, though – this afternoon’s caution was his third of the season, continuing a run that has seen him booked in every league match that he has scored in this term.

Leroy Fer
Along with Etienne Capoue, the Swansea midfielder continues to bely his budget price tag, with this afternoon’s goal a third in the first four Gameweeks.

Granted, the upcoming fixtures continue to look dire but having scored against Leicester and Chelsea in back-to-back fixtures, Fer seems to have the form to prevail.

Capoue’s cheaper price (4.7 to the Dutchman’s 5.2) and kind set of fixtures from Gameweek 6 suggests he’s likely to remain the favoured fifth midfielder.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
Without a goal or assist in the first three Gameweeks, the Swansea playmaker had dropped to 7.3 ahead of Chelsea’s visit.

Sigurdsson’s spot-kick duties came to the rescue, though, and with a couple of bonus points also in the bag, his season now looks up and running.

Fer may currently be the form option, yet Siggurdsson is established Fantasy royalty and could be one to consider when the fixtures start to improve in Gameweek 9.

Stephen Kingsley
The Scot was expected to drop to the bench to accommodate Neil Taylor’s return but instead retained a role in the first XI thanks to a change in tactics by Francesco Guidolin.

The Swansea manager’s decision to begin with a 3-5-1-1 allowed Kingsley to start for the fourth successive Gameweek, stationed alongside Jordi Amat and Federico Fernandez in a back three, with Taylor utilised as a left wing-back.

Guidolin’s first-half decision to haul off Taylor and bring on Mo Barrow suggests Kingsley may well be ahead in the pecking order.

Regardless, with Southampton, City, Liverpool and Arsenal next, he looks set for a spot on our FPL benches for now.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
Okay, it was his first blank of the season.

Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that if Hazard had delivered yet again today, the bandwagon would have kicked into overdrive.

Although a rare off day will certainly be forgiven by his owners, some would-be suitors may now think twice over bringing in the Belgian right now.

With the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Roberto Firmino and Michail Antonio all bagging double-figure hauls ahead of some great fixtures, Chelsea’s schedule – which sees them face Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester and Man United in the next five Gameweeks – could prove enough of a short-term deterrent.

The Chelsea Defence
Antonio Conte handed new boys David Luiz and Marcos Alonso a place amongst the substitutes, opting instead to keep faith in the defence that produced a clean sheet against Burnley in the previous Gameweek.

Branislav Ivanovic may have collected an assist for Costa’s acrobatic leveler yet the nature of Chelsea’s capitulation indicates their backline is very much a work in progress right now.

Given the aforementioned fixtures, Conte will be desperate to address his rearguard’s shortcomings. With John Terry doubtful for Liverpool’s visit with an ankle problem, the Italian may well consider a reshuffle against Jurgen Klopp’s in-form attack.

Neil Taylor
Hauled off just 40 minutes into his first appearance of the season, the left-back looked none too happy with his manager’s decision as Swansea reverted to a back-four.

Post-match, Guidolin apologised, conceding he should have replaced the Wales international at the break, though the bottom line is that Taylor now seems to have fallen behind the cut-price Kingsley as the Italian’s preferred left-back for now.

Gw6.....lukaku and ozil to King and Kun for a hit...wildcard firmly in pocket...

    Foster jaku
    Valencia stones friend kone amat
    Hazard firmino lamela ozil capoue

Thoughts on Pogba's overall performance for Man Utd so far?
He's really skilled on the ball, even if he almost loses it, it bounces right back into his feet. Other than that he takes lots of unnecessary shots from distance and seemed to not know his role and position against City.

Flashes of what he can do on his debut. Okay-ish vs Hull. Invisible vs Man City.

Tbh he won't be the only player chasing shadows against City this season. He was rubbish.

Apart from that I've really liked him so far...points will come.

Thought he looked very promising in the role he played second half in the derby. That strength in the nr 10 role gives us a better chance of moving our fullbacks higher up the pitch and find Zlatan with crosses. Herrera as a defensive mid and Pogba in a free offensive role looked really good

Yes, but either Mourinho aknowledges his best role, because he's not using a 100m player 'right' or Pogba adapts to his different role, his positioning was partly at fault for the 2 goals City's scored. Attacking wise, he's going to have to learn to lay the ball off sometimes, not just dribble and shoot when little space is available.

yeah, completely agree with you. Defensively not a great player imo. He need another player staying lower in the pitch allowing him to have these runs forward. His physique needs to be used to hold the ball and create room to pass other not only shoot from 30 yards whenever possible

            • 11 Years
            9 years, 6 months ago

Indeed. His shots will get annoying for the fans imo, there's going to be a wonder goal no doubt, but if he doesn't learn what is best to do at certain situations, a lot of times he'll fails to see a space for a deadly pass and instead go for a 1 in a 100 goal.

Exactly. I liked the sort of 'power play' we were able to get with Pogba in the offensive role though. Just like under Sir Alex', we managed to push our opponent back and get our fullbacks high up the pitch. What's you preferred midfield line up?

This is a major worry. Might have to transfer him. If Alli didnt score I would say he was most at risk of rotation. Really tough one to call. Sissoko will go alongside Wanyama imo.

    GK: Cech, Jakupovic

DEF: Walker, Valencia, Williams, Van Aanholt, Holebas

I am wondering the same. Depending on Lukaku's output tomorrow and GW 5 I will decide. Even though he scored 3, he got 2 from soft penalties imo. I think the points he has flatter him.

everytime he is out, we have people who consider going without him, then he pops 3 in. The way city are playing and the fact hes the best striker in the league makes him essential.

Anyone else think a wildcard in GW6 could be a serious headache with the amount of (potential) options?

Fixtures turn was a real thing last season. I'm playing for it. At least there are many players with form. Choosing won't be difficult as you just choose the players with both

think it depends purely on how happy you are with your current team. these various options are here to stay i think you need to back your hunches sooner or later. plus rotation will soon further muddy the waters

I think the big mistake people might fall into is viewing kun as essential when there are so many other good options. I'm tempted to pass on him for GW6, have Sterling as cover and hope for the best. I'll feel better about that if Sterling scores next week.

Sane might have a chance to play in his role. Sterling v Kun really?

You can not 'cover' Aguero with Sterling as a large number of the game will not captain Sterling like they will Aguero.

4,5m itb, 1 ft. WC or what to do? Ramirez and/or Dio has to go at least...What would you do, probably better wait 1 week for WC and then get Aguero back and rethink...

This might be a bit sad, but I like to look at the scores of the Scoutcasters to see how they fared. The URLs in the profiles don't work anymore (ID numbers appear to have changed with the new EPL site) and I'm not in the Mods and Cons ML, so I wonder if there's another way to get there outside of looking through the entirety of the FFScout ML

        Short version:

        Me - Awful
Mark - Worse (because he wildcarded)
Granville - Played a blinder benching Aguero and playing Capoue + Cazorla
Jonty - Wildcard has done well - Antonio, Costa and Benteke

On the WC, had the patience (for once) to save last week, but not this week.

How do you think this looks currently?

    Valencia - Williams - Friend - Holebas - Amat
    Sanchez - Hazard - Antonio - Snodgrass - Capoue
    Ibra - Lukaku - Benteke
