An impressive first-half display was enough to see Liverpool beat Chelsea in their own backyard for a second successive season.

Phillipe Coutinho played his part, eased into the Liverpool starting XI courtesy of Roberto Firmino’s untimely groin tweak; he was back amongst the points. As was Diego Costa, who maintained his relentless early season form without seeing yellow. Here’s the Stock Check following Friday’s action…

On the Rise

Diego Costa
Another goal and no booking, this version of Costa undoubtedly requires serious consideration.

Many recruited the Chelsea man as an understudy for Sergio Aguero until Gameweek 6; he has passed that audition.

Some will surely be pondering their options before clicking the eject button to welcome back the City man. Having returned in each of his five Gameweeks, with five goals so far, they will be considering a downgrade in midfield to retain Costa’s services.

However, the Spaniard will need to demonstrate fixture proof qualities to maintain such form: Arsenal, Leicester City and Manchester United arrive in the next four Gameweeks.

Philippe Coutinho
Having blanked in three Gameweeks since his big haul at Arsenal, the Brazilian returned to the Liverpool line-up and provided a delicious assist for their opener. That was enough to seal him two bonus points.

On a night when Roberto Firmino missed out with a minor injury, Coutinho took his opportunity to strengthen the hold on his 28% Fantasy Premier League ownership.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
Okay, it’s too early to panic but, given the competition for spots and funds in our squads, Hazard can’t afford to embark on a run of blanks.

Three points from his last two rings alarm bells, as does the dip in his vital statistics – Hazard has mustered two goals attempts over these two blanks, compared to 14 from the opening three Gameweeks.

The Chelsea Defence
Liverpool have had a tough opening with four away trips in the first five. However, Antonio Conte’s outfit don’t have that excuse.

The Blues have enjoyed three home matches but have just the shut-out against Burnley to show for it.

With a combined ownership of 39%, Chelsea’s back five are expensive investments and, with the aforementioned tough fixtures to come, future returns appear limited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

if other strikers (like Lukaku and Kane) haul this weekend, he'll continue to drop. his flag doesn't come off for nearly 5 days.

How did Costa lose all of his bonus today...? He was on 33 baps during the second half which would have been 2 bonus, instead he ends up with 27 for 0.

Can't see the benefit in going Costa over Hazard when that happens.

      1. Postman Ty
        10 years, 1 month ago

Costa has much more potential for double digits, especially in his current form. He will get 2 goals or a goal and assist here and there. Hazard will very rarely score more than one and tends to go anonymous, but he does have penalties which is a big factor. I tend to agree tho, I will be selling Costa for Aguero this week and I think dropping Hazard for Mane/Firmino next week.

Do you intend to keep Jaku though? I can't see him rising again and you're probably getting Pickford with Marshall looming around Jakupovic's spot.

I can fit all the risers in if I wanted but won't bother with Mane or Fer as they wont double rise. Would rather keep Tadic and try and make back 0.1 on him if he explodes than I would ditch for Fer hoping for 2nd rise.

I know Townsend is at -100.7 but do you actually think he will drop? Surely not all 30 of the expected fallers will actually fall? If he isn't going to I will just get KDB tonight and might not even end up WC'ing

    3. Acquafresca

      Heaton won't rise.

      Foster Jaku

Not interested in Firmino? Selling for 8.4 means his next rise means nothing.

You have confirmed the drop by selling. Unless you plan on keeping Mane then it doesn't really work out.

My selling price was 8.4, I can buy back at 8.4.

Think TM is saying you bought for £8.5 so if you kept him then his next rise would have got you the £0.1m back.

I've WC, not waiting around and missing rises and then playing it next Friday!

My point is that I don't plan on selling Firmino anytime soon so the 0.1 is irrelevant as he's staying in my team unless injured.

Decent start. 223 points. On WC.

                        Team this week:

                        Foster
                        Valencia Stones Evans

A lot of similarity to mine. I can see many teams evolving and going different ways once Kun is back, but I also think defences will be template.

Amat away to Soton over Evans (CS & BAP potential) home to WHU? And you put de Roon (not even nailed on) in front of Evans too?

Soton have been very inconsistent, Swansea looked better last week than start of the season. West Ham wasn't a side I wanted double defense again, especially if I'm rooting for Antonio anyways.

De Roon is most certainly nailed on, just was injured. He'll start next to Forshaw.

          Not to scare you but:

Yep I know that, I made a conscious decision to sell him on WC last week for Costa and so far it's worked. It was either Costa and Mane or Ibra and Lamela (or some puddling around 7m-ish mid). Costa and Mane was 24 points last week, Costa 6 points this. May pan out, may not. 33 weeks left 😉

            1. Philman
              10 years, 1 month ago

I personally favour the "lose Ibra for Kun" route. I like the flexinilty it gives, and believe Lukaku will more than match his output.

and that's the other side, I was planning on selling Ibra for Kun anyhow, so I gambled on doing it earlier than planned to save myself a transfer

For me, Ibra is going for Kun this week at the moment, and I will hold the WC for when I feel I need to make a major change to my team. I am not anywhere near that point yet.

What? Of course it's worked so far, literally.

Points are points. And it's not 1v1 comparison, especially at the top price points. It's what that money does for the rest of your team.

oh also, the only numbers that matter are those of managers in front of me or just around me..so hundreds of thousands of those people who owned/captained are totally irrelevant. unless none of my options fire. points are still just points in the end.

I just threw up at the 4-3-3 bit, saw Capoue as a 3rd midfielder and then threw up again.

    5. Gravless wonder

Too heavy in defence. Capoue might be acceptable as a fourth midfielder but never a third. Downgrade two or even three defenders and go 3-4-3

    6. Acquafresca

Three 4.5s is a bit over the top IMO.

Thank you all. Capoue, 433, expensive defenders. I knew they wouldn't like it.

      1. Acquafresca

I don't mind the 433 bit. It's the fact you have three 4.5 mids, if Capoue gets injured/ stops performing, you'll need major surgery due to the fact there's no other viable 4.5 scoring mids out there.

Zlatan and Ibra is a solution to that particular puzzle I hadn't considered... 😉

I kid, it's a sound strategy so long as you haven't gotten rid of anyone you had value in that you might want to keep. But it looks like you've considered that (keeping Haz etc).

Pre season I posted quite often that I really fancied Bolasie and Shaqiri to step it up this season. It doesn't really matter whether they do or not but they're two players I want to do well...just a shame Shaqiri is injured after his 9pts in GW1. I feel cheated out of a punt.

    1. Parm
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I completely agree on the Shaqiri pick, I just wish he was a little more direct in his play for Stoke. He finds himself on the touchline and doesn't come inside nearly enough, puts in a high number of crosses though and with Bony about I like his chances of at least double digit assists.

      1. Dr Dream
        10 years, 1 month ago

Aye...maybe he will or maybe not....but either way he and Bolasie feel a bit like "my picks" from pre season. I just want it to work out, or not, as the case may be.

Most South American players didnt start after the last international break, so it's reasonable to assume Aguero won't in GW7 right?

Maybe a case for not bringing him in until GW8? Or is that madness?
