A Baggies attacker, a consistent Everton and a volatile market that’s showing the door to a goalscoring legend. We say goodbye to Gameweek 5 with a tale of the unexpected…

The Player

Immediately filed under β€œpromising, must monitor”, Nacer Chadli was always going to be an interesting option once he’d made the move to West Brom.

An erratic Fantasy asset while at White Hart Lane, the Belgian nonetheless demonstrated the ability to spark to life in the box, raiding for goals and suddenly turning a forgettable average six out of ten performance, into a match-winning display.

That wasn’t the case in Gameweek 5.

On Saturday, the Baggies record signing carried the game to West Ham from the kick-off; Chadli single-handedly transformed West Brom from a ponderous, impotent attacking force to a team that bristled with threat.

His two goals and two assists have immediately brought him to the attention of the masses but, distracted by leading lights elsewhere, he’s yet to register the transfer interest Saturday’s points tally deserves.

We still have reservations. It’s still difficult to trust West Brom’s potential to score goals: we can hardly make a judgement based on a single performance against a beleaguered Hammers defence.

But with penalty duties unexpectedly tucked away in his locker, Chadli is clearly alive and back in the game.

Another handy mid-price candidate to call upon once West Brom’s schedule softens.

The Team

Five Gameweeks in and Everton’s recognition as a Fantasy force is already long overdue.

While Everton barely had to break into their third gear to see off Middlesbrough, it’s clear that they have become a very different proposition under Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman has revived their Fantasy assets.

We’ve already dwelt on the appeal of Romelu Lukaku.

While we remain wary of a player that has teased us for so long, his displays and output thus far have given us every reason to believe that we will see him make another stride towards genuine heavy-hitter status. A true challenge for the Golden Boot is on – 25 goals perhaps a realistic target.

But the supporting cast also warrants attention.

At the back, Seamus Coleman’s fine opener against β€˜Boro was his reminder of his six-goal season back in 2013/14.

While we’re willing Leighton Baines to rediscover his returns from bygone years, Coleman has the legs on the left-back and could yet emerge as the stronger option.

Then we add Ashley Williams – a statistical monster who can potentially offer an even cheaper route into covering Everton’s new level of resilience.

In midfield, Koeman has added Yannick Bolasie on the right and appears to be investing faith in Kevin Mirallas on the opposite flank.

Both have the talent to provide us with mid-price options – particularly for those who still baulk at the concept of Ross Barkley following Lukaku’s lead in shaking off his frustrating inconsistencies.

The Talking Point

The mighty really are falling.

Eden Hazard’s price has tumbled 0.2 in the space of 48 hours with thousands of owners panicked at his meagre returns with Manchester City’s midfield assets sparkling.

Three points over his last two Gameweeks, plus an alarming decline in his underlying numbers, has provided the catalyst for what some would describe as a knee jerk reaction.

Last season’s decline will have also spooked some – we’ve seen how severely Hazard can regress; three encouraging Gameweeks has clearly not been enough to win back our trust.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is close to mirroring Hazard’s sudden collapse.

Triggered by Manchester United’s current malaise and Sergio Aguero’s return, Ibrahimovic is being mercilessly shown the door at pace, despite returning a goal or an assist in four of his five Gameweeks.

It fits the profile of the season discussed in last week’s ScoutCast.

The transfer activity of the last ten days is typical of a campaign that will see heavy-hitters frequently slide in and out of favour.

Last season we sat on the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Dele Alli because they provided such value: we were wary of selling them and absorbing a big cash loss and, given their price and a lack of alternatives, we could afford to sit tight.

With big funds tied up in both Hazard and Ibrahimovic, this is not the case. FPL managers will feel compelled to act quickly, driven by a market where every 0.1 counts.

The money tied up in failing heavy-hitters can be used to carry out significant surgery, or to move to the next big name edging into form and rising in price. There’s been a constant supply of those so far.

Regardless of the trend, many will sit still, discounting toughening fixtures for both Hazard and Ibrahimovic, backing them to punish the fickle amongst us.

It remains to be seen who will win out. But one thing is certain: the short-lived shelf life of the big hitters is already making for a fascinating season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

  2. Will Capoue Continue To Collect The Points?

Many people here in the Capoue + De Roon camp or Capoue + Diomande camp seem to be selectively remembering Ramsey and Yaya’s hot seasons when thinking about Capoue's hot start.

Why not look to Zamora bagging 3 goals and 3 assists in 4 starts for Fulham in 2011 then only registering 1 assist in his next 7 starts as guidance?

Or Leon Best scoring 3 and making an assist in his first 4 starts for Newcastle in the same year and only scoring 1 more goal and making 2 more assists in 11 more starts?

Or Van de Vaart for a closer midfield comparison with 6 goals and 2 assists in 8 appearances before only scoring 1 and assisting 2 in his next 13 appearances?

Or Jordi Gomez at Wigan scoring 4 in 5 after a spell on the sidelines then not scoring or assisting in his next 12?

Or Pavel Pogrebnyak scoring 5 in his first 3 games for Fulham before only scoring 1 in his remaining 9 appearances?

Or in 2012 Damien Duff scoring 3 and assisting 1 in Fulham's first 5 games then not scoring though assisting 26 in his next 26 appearances?

Or Moussa Sissoko with 3 goals and 3 assists in his first 6 for Newcastle and then nothing in his remaining 6 apps?

Or Sebastien Bassong who scored 3 goals in 4 games from corners and then only registered 1 goal and 2 assists in his next 108 league matches?

Or Zamora (again) this time for QPR with 3 goals in 4 starts then 1 goal and 2 assists in his remaining 12?

Or Crouch with 4 goals and an assist in his first 6 starts for Stoke before 1 goal and 2 assists in his next 16 starts?

Or in 2013 Leroy Fer's midseason hotspot of 3 goals and an assist in 5 before nothing in his remaining 14 starts?

Or in 2014 Ayoze Perez with 3 goals in his first 3 starts then only 2 goals and no assists in his next 18 starts?

Or Schneiderlin with 3 goals in 4 starts for Southampton before 1 goal and 2 assists in his next 20 starts?

Or Keiron Dyer with 3 goals in 3 starts for Swansea followed by 2 assists in 19 starts and numerous sub appearances?

Or Ulloa with 5 goals in 5 starts followed by 2 goals and 2 assists in 16 starts and numerous sub appearances?

Or in 2015 Russell Martin from Norwich with 3 goals in 6 from corners and nothing in his next 24 games?

Or Bafetimi Gomis scoring 4 in 4 starts then only scoring 2 goals in his next 14 starts and 15 sub appearances?

Football is a high variance game where short hot streaks can just happen with little rhyme or reason and 4 goals from 7 shots is crazy hot. Maybe Capoue will shoot more against his easier opponents coming and returns will keep coming but “Oh but Ramsey” isn’t a great argument especially when he was shooting almost twice as much as Capoue is now per game. Now I’m not saying don’t play him in some of these good fixtures coming up if you have him, but I think promoting him to 4th mid and buying someone like De Roon as your 5th is a little rash.

Chill, We have FT's if it doesn't work out after 2 gameweeks. We aren't playing agame where we have to select players for the whole season.

but if your attacker on the bench is say Snodgrass rather than De Roon then it saves free transfers down the line if the Capoue experiment goes tits up and you don't have to spend 2 FTs rebalancing your squad while there's likely issues (loss of form or injuries) elsewhere in your squad.

In general I agree with you, but people were saying similar things last season about Mahrez. He's a form player in a form team with kind fixtures for the next four. It's enough for me to play him, especially as I've had him three weeks already and watched two double figure hauls sit in first sub...

playing him in the next couple is fine IMO especially with the fixtures but I've seen some wildcard upheavals with dodgy team structures trying to fit in all the big boys up top and having him as a permanent 4th mid.

This. As you're saying, 2FTs can undone this when the good run is over. Plan can be to play him in the next 4 with all the big boys then go back to "normality".
If he can begin to become more and more central in Watford's attacks, then we can maybe keep him a bit longer ?
Anyway, it's a game where you have to make judgement calls. Let's be it : -)

Balders, Capoue has DREAM fixtures for the next 5. They literally can't get much better. I know very well that his stats aren't good and what he's doing now is completely unsustainable, but those stats came with his terrible first several fixtures.

With the fixtures turning dramatically and his confidence skyhigh, I think his stats will improve.

Oh and by the way I'm on WC and going exactly for the "dodgy" team structure you're talking about, at least for the next 5. ^^

Mahrez was a key player, he pulled the strings, and it was plain to see; while Capoue is more of an occasion-reaper, so to speak, he just appears at the right time and claims the goal.

I'm with in that Capoue won't keep it up, in fact I'm 100% benching him this week.

That said this whole game is about hot streaks and getting players on form, selling them when they're off form.

Can people stop citing statistics and shots on target without any context?
I'll take Capoue's 1 shot on goal per 70 minutes from an open unmarked position at the edge of the box over Shane Long's 5 bad and impotent shots on target anytime. Or Coutinho's 30 yard shots that end up in row Z that he takes every 9 minutes per game. Watch the goddamn highlights and stop mindlessly interpreting stat numbers on a screen.
Capoue's and subsequently Watford's success is tactical, not a statistical anomaly.

And who cares if people are playing as a 4-th midfielder, if he starts blanking, downgrade one midfielder, replace your fifth with a new one and bench Capoue. I'd prefer that much more than banging my head against the wall every time i see Capoue with 10+ points on the bench.

Of course they matter, if a player is having lots of shots a game, but not many are on targert/converted you will want to know the percentages etc. If someone is taking 20 shots a game, but never hitting the target are you going to get them in? πŸ™‚ A mixture of both highlights and stats are good.

Stats are helpful only to support preconcieved decisions, they can be twisted, spinned and interpreted in any possible way that supports an insecure's team owner decision.
The way statistical evidence is used by many members of this community is fallacious.

The same can be said for highlights then... You've had your eye on a player and you see him make two good runs and think he's going to start scoring/hitting form.

At the end of the day its a forum where people are going to post stats/information etc. If you don't like seeing stats or using stats then don't use them. Let people play, how they want to play, it's only to help them.

I'm pretty sure I'd be consistent in my view that he shouldn't get a free pass as a 4th mid.

I am aware of gambler's fallacy and this is not it. I am not saying he is "due" to score less because he has scored many in a cluster up to this point. I am providing balance to the survivorship bias in people's memories of the bandwagons that stuck. Feel free to add Cisse and Ba to Ramsey and Yaya on that side of the argument but Capoue's profile so far is one that seems more likely to fail than succeed.

But even if it fails, should we care?
His price makes him a very low risk, high reward option. And upgrading him to the 4-th midfielder spot not only enables cash for three hard hitting strikers but also solves the bench nightmares and headaches that people with Capoue as a 5-th mid have.
                  It's a win-win scenario.
And if he starts blanking, 2 transfers are not that big of a sacrifice to get your team back on track.

You then don't have to spend 2 FTs rebalancing your squad while there's likely issues (loss of form or injuries) elsewhere in your squad that you'd rather be dealing with. Agree totally, use Capoue as an enabler, hope for the best, plan to be flexible and you can always have an option no matter what happens.

I'm not on a wildcard yet but something like this would fit your criteria (the exact players are unimportant, more the team structure):

                      Cech // Pickford
                      Walker // Lovren // Williams // Evans // Amat
                      Sanchez // Sterling // Firmino // Snodgrass // Capoue
                      Aguero // Lukaku // Deeney

Options at all price points, one or two players picked based upon fixtures rather than overall potential but a lot of flexibility and all comes with a headache of who to bench each week!!!

Same as with any player, when the gravy train stops rolling, then I'll get off. I'm not going to deny myself such a cheap player who is 10 points clear of any other player. I know that much. And if another cheap middie affords me Ibra and Kun up top, then I'm willing to roll with that for the mo'. I will be upgrading that other cheapo middie (Rodwell - - don't ask) soon enough, however. Plenty of examples both ways - how many people kept benching Mahrez last season, or bought Carrol to play 352 when Newc were promoted and kept him on the bench?

There are decent enough 4.4-4.5 starters to take a punt for a good run of fixtures whilst freeing up enough funds to go for Sanchez over Ozil or similar for a few weeks and if it doesn't work out you can swap again.

There are examples both ways of course but some people seem to have a willing mindblock on the unsuccessful bandwagons of seasons past and remembering only the good ones. I just don't think now is the moment to install him as a de facto 4th midfielder at the expense of your squad structure yet.

People who say there are examples both ways are really missing the point, saying Mahrez and carroll are the same is just plain wrong as they were taking lots of shots and getting lots on target and in a lot of the wasps mentioned as successes they had penalties and or set pieces too.

What Balders is saying is that looking at the stats the Capou wagon is more likely to be in the fail category than the success one

      Good reminder post, thanks.

Ironically, I think there's a different reason for picking Capoue as 4th mid - flexibility in transfers in the coming weeks, while taking a punt of Capue for the easier fixtures. (you dont get that choice often)

Only applies if you're keeping Ibra - I am.
It means I end up with Sanchez and two 7-9M mids which gives me plenty of options to swap out depending on who I downgrade Ibra for in 2-3 weeks.

Yes I do and I'm more comfortable with Redmond than I would be Capoue as my 4th mid. That said I wish I didn't cash out on Capoue at £4.7m and kept him around as my 5th mid. Ah well, c'est la vie, my wildcard's gone now.

I had de Roon in some of my initial drafts for my GW1 squad, and even included him in my team name (AlliFonte in de Roon).
I replaced him with Fletcher, but I should have got Capoue instead, because of his excellent form pre-season and his recommendation by Jonty as being the best choice for 5th midfielder.
So Capoue's success was not entirely unexpected, and his early scores have confirmed that he is even better than his pre-season form suggested. I have no sympathy for those who insist on benching him and then complaining about his big scores. It is very hard to spot the end of a sequence of success, and I see no sign of it yet.

I'd disagree and say Snodgrass looks a very good pick at £5.7m but I guess your situation is different to the wildcarders this is primarily aimed at as you'll have to spend FTs to rearrange your squad whereas some people have free reign to rebalance with their WC.

Well done on your start so far.

I'm with Balders. The Mahrez comparisons don't hold water.

Mahrez's first five matches last season:

30 penalty area touches, 17 shots, and 12 chances created.

Capoue's first five matches this season:

12 penalty area touches, 7 shots, and 5 chances created.

Capoue is not this year's Mahrez.

I think Capoue was quite lucky (his midfield-poacher instincts are impeccable, though) to score those goals and collect bonus points, when other players were hustling a lot harder.

It's only a matter of time when he reverts to being 2pt scoring 5th mid (until he scores again on our benches, and he will).

    17. aquavit

Let's not outsmart ourselves. Capoue is so cheap that we can afford to keep him as a 5th midfielder for a few weeks if/when he goes off the boil. Right now he's my 4th midfielder and that's what he will stay until he plays himself out of my starting 11.

    18. Bøwstring The Carp

He's playing like Ramsey, Yaya and Barkley in the sense that his positional movement is great with surging runs and lurking on the edge of the box for lost. displaced passes and crosses.

Statistically he will probably drop off, but I'm using him as a 4th mid now in rotation with Mirallas and Redmond as I need to for the next few weeks until I wildcard after GW7.

I agree though, De Roon in combination with him is a little risky long-term but for the next 3-4 games it could be sustainable.

The fact that Capoue is 4.5m makes him an exception to the players listed above as he was the cheapest Midfielder available in the game. Even if he plays 90 minutes and blanks every game for the rest of the season he will probably justify his 4.5m price tag already with his returns so far.

I personally think this is a big over reaction for two reasons:

      1) once he is in, he can be switched out. It's not a season long commitment that can't be broken.

      2) with the huge saving of funds for the rest of the squad by having Capoue as a 4th, to me I wouldn't be concerned even if he didn't get a goal assist or bonus point in his next 5, because he makes the rest of my team superior who should be able to more than make up for it. He is worth the risk for his potential points and being a squad enabler. Just because he has scored so well everyone seems to think it is black or white that people owning him want/assume he we keep scoring. If he stops, is it that bad at 4.5m? To me, it isn't and it won't alarm me.

Although - all that being said.

I really do like how much of a Marmite effect Capoue is having on us.

There definitely seems to be a very split way of thinking on Capoue. Some love him and some loathe him.

Yet another part of the 2016/17 fantasy jigsaw puzzle that has everyone's teams so dissimilar.

It is not about whether he keeps up his scoring or not. It is whether you should have him as a fourth mid or not.

If he stops scoring as your fifth mid then no harm done but if he stops scoring as your fourth mid and you have a Fletcher as your fifth mid then it could cost a lot of hassle and points trying to get him out especially if you are fire fighting in the rest of your squad and maybe trying to find a ft to bring in another hot player with peachy fixtures.

I will say he almost certainly will go off the boil and we will be looking at 2s and 3s from him in the not too distant future.

However, in the meantime what I don't get is- if you have him now, why would you not continue to play him while he's banging them in? Yes over a season his output is unsustainable, but why not reap the rewards of this streak where everything is flying in for him?

When it stops- back on the bench.

Interesting facts, but the hick is that as a FPL player, you need to maximise your point return and there is nothing bad in drafting him in, getting the points and building team value and then ditch when he drop forms..

In fact, since modern football is mainly based on video monitoring of opponents, it is logical that after some games, once the opponents analyse the game of any particular player, they will mark him more closely.

The same discussion can be said for Ibra.. people just need to get him when he is getting the points and ditch him when needed. For em personally, no player is a season keeper, not even Kun, coz given a poor run, I'm sure I'll ditch him even if I will have to get him back later.

Hit the nail on the head Balders.

Yes it's been a great run but certainly not unique in history.

The 2 things that stand out this with this Capoue run of form are
      (1) his price, at the start of the season he was a stand out 4.5m player, due to his shift in role under new management. To be honest though at 5m he is already now more than i would spend on him.
      (2) his run has coincided with the start of the season. If this happened wk 28 to 32 it would be noticed but it would not be the same phenomenon and would be viewed more as an anomaly.

The fact that it has timed like this could and to an extent does indicate a permanent shift for him, ie he is allowed to bomb forward now, but everything points to some significant regression coming up.

I am on a WC, have kept Capoue who I Started the season with, may even play him once or twice over the next few weeks but he is most definitely still my 5th midfielder.

For clarification on part 2 nearly all of the above were start of season runs or when joining the league as a new player. The Bassong one was midseason but I found it too fun to leave out.

So good to see you posting, your grav had been sorely missing from the Hot Topics.

While the above posts have played through the exception vs rule debate to death, there is something else here that is important to consider: price.

As a first time buyer this week (as casual as one could be, by some definitions), I look at him very differently than all of you who have benched him, sold him for profit, or ignored him. He is no longer an uber enabler with out of this world returns for his price point; rather, he is now a 5.0m goal scoring mid who has jumped up into a new price category. If he continues to score even remotely well, his peer group price wise will soon give me much better transfer options than Fletcher, Marney, and Yacob. If he cools and becomes an issue, I can ship him for another inexpensive fourth mid.

My last thought is that sometimes players make us forget our FPL Noob selves, and being in this forum just exacerbates that stubbornness. The more information we have, the more clever we can become, but the spirit of sharing what we perceive to be inside information on here makes for a bizarre experience, where plenty of times we make decisions that leave us feeling torn between an expert and a sheep, even though it's the same move regardless of what we posted on here.

If you were brand new to FPL and saw the highest scoring player only cost 5.0m, you'd get him in. While thinking more deeply on it might make you change your mind, look at the next thoughts or impulses one might have while considering:

-- hype? Dramatic goal on the big stage last weekend.
-- eye test? Goals look cool. Seems to attack at the right time.
      -- form? Pretty damn good.
-- fixtures? Among the best in the next five.
-- value? The guy is a veritable unicorn right now.

While it seems too easy, or too simple, I think Capoue denial might run the risk of being too clever. I do it all the time, but at some point watching a unicorn fly and waiting for it to plummet just seems a bit useless.

Good posts made on both sides, but I'd just add that he does this season have the freedom to push forward with three centre-backs and Behrami behind him, while the wing-backs aren't playing that high.

He'll almost certainly regress in terms of production, but like Andy said on the ScoutCast, even if he ticks over with the odd goal or asset, that's fine given his price tag.

Will reassess after these five favourable matches - "fire and forget" until then, he's earned that status with his output thus far.

Its an option. He does not need to make any attacking points to be a good 4th midfielder

Why? Well consider Capoue as a 4th mid and Bellerin
Instead of Redmond as a Fourth mid and a 4m defender

As long as Bellerin performed much better than the 4m defender then Capoue would be doing a good job even withpout and attacking points. He may even get some more, who knows. But the downside seems pretty limited

You wouldn't be playing a 4m def week in week out? Your comparison would make more sense if you compared it to a 3 way rotation of 4.5 4.5 4.0 def. Your pints comparison would be how much more does Bellerin and Capou score than redmond and the 4.5 4.5 4.0 rotating defenders.

          B) Jaku + Vertonghen + Antonio + Ibra (no che)?

Thanks. Will have Aguero, just weighing up who'll score best vs ownership.
Still a little worried about not having Ibra.

I'm on a WC and i've decided to go with Heaton as my main goalkeeper. Now, my dilemma is whether to go with Pickford or Robinson as the second goalkeeper.

Robinson: Guaranteed backup if Heaton should get injured. Would mean that Heaton is required to play all matches.

Pickford: Gives me the ability to play him when Heaton has hard games, but might loose his spot to Mika/Mannone during the next months. Would leave me without backup if Heaton is injured.

                    Thoughts?

Most saves so far. Was the second highest scoring goalie the last time Burnley was in the PL. So yeah, I rate him. I have Wba cover in Evans anyway, otherwise i might have picked Foster.

I had Foster/Jaku and swapped for Heaton/Robinson on my GW4 WC and I'm glad I don't have to look at keeper points on my bench. Trying to sort out keepers when one gets injured is a pain at the best of times, nevermind this season where every transfer feels so important with how players are dropping and rising for fun and the lack of a template.

                      Please RMT!

                      Foster - Pickford
                      Lovren - Amat - Holebas - Walker - Baines
                      Firmino - Antonio - Capoue - Sanchez - Chadli
                      Deeney - Aguero - Lukaku

My plan is to save 2 transfers for GW8. Then I will sub out Lovren and Chadli for the benefit of Snoddy and someone.

A WC midfield of Sterling, Firmino, Antonio, Capoue and a 4.4 gives med the IbraLukaKun strikeforce with 1.3 in the bank.

Allows me one more gameweek of monitoring to see if either Sterling or Firmino is worth the upgrade to Özil. In two weeks time I could potentially get Sánchez through a Lukaku downgrade if that looks more enticing..

                      Sounds like a plan?

If anyone are wondering about goalies/defence:

I'm keeping Heaton and Foster. Not yet decided on the defence, but trying to maintain a 5.5|5.0|4.5|4.5|4.0 price balance.

Given their form and fixtures Sanchez and Lukaku are essential IMO. I'd forget about the future planning and downgrade Sterling to Snoddy and upgrade either Antonio or Firmino to Sanchez

You have missed the Snoddy price increase (5.7m now), so I would get a bench fodder 5th mid (4.4 or 4.5m) and use the extra dosh to upgrade elsewhere.

                            Sanchez. Zaha. Snoddy. Antonio. (Capoue)

                            Ibra. Kun. Kaku.

                            Help!?

Shaw likely to be out for 3 weeks, and not sure about Zaha.

Sterling is a lot cheaper and looks very good. KDB is better player but may not score better

Quick question. Would Ibra falling means his selling price dropping if you had him from the start?

The selling price is your purchase price plus half of the gain in price (rounded down)
