A wasteful Dele Alli maintains his scoring form, Mesut Ozil wins the plaudits but blanks again, while injuries to Ryan Bertrand and Darren Fletcher cause early Gameweek 8 concerns. Here are the notes from Saturday’s international tussles…

Alli Nets Again

England found a way past the Maltese bus at Wembley, with Spurs midfielder Dele Alli (8.2) scoring the second goal.

The Spurs man could, and should, have had more, but his strike confirmed his blossoming form – you just wouldn’t know it from his Fantasy Premier League ownership.

Alli has scored a solid 24 points over the last four Gameweeks and yet he has consistently suffered sales. Having started the season as part of 415,753 FPL squads, Alli is now found in just over half of that figure, although he looks to have enjoyed a small gain in ownership heading into next weekend’s fixtures – the first Gameweek where he has shown an increase this season.

This trend is undoubtedly attributed to the popularity of team-mate Heung Min-Son (7.6), who has seen a big surge in his ownership (141,900 transfers in this week alone) on the back of four goals and two assists from his last four starts up front.

Spurs’ remain in the thick of the international action, and with a UEFA Champions League fixture looming, Mauricio Pochettino would not have been overly pleased to see Danny Rose (5.9) playing such a full part at Wembley.

He came on for the injured Ryan Bertrand (5.4), whose hamstring issue has already ruled him out of the Slovenia clash.

Rose has himself only just returned from a spell on the sidelines and Pochettino must now be pondering his rotation options in the light of his international minutes.

The 5.3% of FPL managers who own Rose will be hoping that he gets the nod for the trips to West Brom and Bournemouth, rather than the Champions League fixture at Bayer Leverkusen.

Bertrand Concern for Saints

Bertrand’s hamstring injury will be a major worry for Claude Puel with the club confirming that their left-back will now return to the south-coast for an assessment.

Should Bertrand face a spell on the sidelines, Puel will likely turn to Matt Targett as his replacement, although he was also nursing a minor injury which saw him miss out for England U21’s and remain with the club over this break.

Targett started the first three Premier League matches and would be of interest to FPL managers given his 4.4 price tag.

The Saints have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league heading into their Gameweek 8 home encounter with Burnley – they’ve kept six successive shut-outs in all competitions.

Ozil sparkles but draws a blank

Things seemed to be looking up for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (9.5) when he was initially credited with an assist in Germany’s 3-0 win over the Czech Republic.

It soon transpired that he had in fact missed helping on the pass that led to the German opener – par for the course for a man who had 19 assists last season but has none in six league matches this campaign.

Two goals have sugared the pill for the 7.4%-owned midfielder, but his premium price is surely testing the patience of his FPL owners.

Ozil’s performance against the Czechs garnered high praise, but he could do with improved returns to back up his undoubted influence.

Domestic matches at home to Swansea City and Middlesbrough and a trip to Sunderland have a last chance saloon feel to them, with Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott continuing to offer more explosive potential in the Gunners’ camp.

McArthur on target as Fletcher pulls up

Scotland’s last-gasp draw at home to Lithuania confirmed the unlikely goalscoring form of Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur (4.9).

His late, late header was his third goal in four matches. Throw in an assist as part of an impressive 12-point haul in the 3-2 win at Sunderland and it is perhaps unsurprising that McArthur has enjoyed a mini-surge in his FPL popularity – he gained more than 28,000 owners heading into Gameweek 7.

As one budget midfield option grows in strength, another suffers a potential blow.

McArthur’s introduction came as a result of Darren Fletcher’s (4.4) withdrawal at half-time. He suffered a first-half thigh injury and is now a major doubt ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Slovakia.

That’s bad news for the well-owned West Brom veteran, who is found in 9.6% of FPL squads.

Tony Pulis will also be hugely concerned given the forthcoming schedule awaiting his side.

The Baggies face Spurs and Man City at home, along with tough trips to Liverpool and Leicester City over their next four Gameweeks.

An absence for the influential Fletcher would surely have some bearing on their chances in those matches – Fletcher has made more successful passes in the opponents’ half than any other Baggies player.

Out of Africa

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane (9.0) continued his fine start to the season going with an assist for Senegal’s opening goal in the 2-0 win over Cape Verde Islands.

The 15.0%-owned midfielder has three goals and an assist from six league starts and, once Gameweek 8’s home match with Manchester United is done, enjoy a superb run of fixtures all the way through to New Year’s Eve.

Hull City also have a prolonged run of attractive matches to come – their next stern test appears to be Spurs away in Gameweek 16 – so striker Dieumerci Mbokani’s (5.5) brace for DR Congo in a 4-0 win over Libya will have done his prospects no harm.

Mbokani made his first start for the Tigers in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea and, depending on his fatigue levels, he will be in line to retain his start for the trip to Bournemouth next weekend.

Love to Amat as he doesn't play and I would punt on a differential such as arnautovic. Also don't get butland yet, get Pickford or marshal instead so you can upgrade matip to rose.

        • 10 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

        Thanks for your advice.

My reasoning behind having Love is that I won't need my 5th defender and even 0.1m is important - doubt I'd ever play Amat. Butland should be fine in a few weeks and Stoke are a better team than Sunderland after all. Pickford will get me save points but I'd have to eventually sell him when Mannone comes back - wouldn't it be too risky to go with two 4.0m keepers in that case?

For 0.1m you may as well have Amat who has some decent fixtures ahead.

Rotation and injuries make the 0.1 investment worth it INO

Amat is 100% worth the 0.1m as I guarantee you will need him at some point when the fixture schedule tightens up and players get rotated or injured.

Butland to Pickford? Would free-up more money. Also unsure if Matip is worth it.

Doing these transfers you could either upgrade Milner to Coutinho/Firminio or Diomande to Wilson/Austin

Love out Amat in for sure for 0.1m.

    Pickford*
    Vertonghen - Holebas - Evans
    Sanchez - Firmino - Sterling* - Antonio
    Aguero - Lukaku* - Benteke

    Heaton - Capoue - Collins - Amat

    0 FT 0 ITB

obviously a few flags, but I'm thinking of holding as Sterling would be fit and Heaton and Capoue can come in for Pickford and Lukaku

Or should i take a hit?...

I'd leave. I dunno how serious Lukaku's injury is either and I'm leaving until next week. Southampton are one of the worst attacking sides in the league, Heats may be a better choice than Pickford anyway.

Sterling is defo not serious and with KdB out is nailed on 100%

    Pickford-Jakupovic(4.1)*
    Walker-Evans-Baines*-Holebas-Amat
    Sanchez-Capoue-Firmino-Antonio-Sterling*
    Lukaku*-Kun-Callum Wilson

    0.3 itb 2FT
    A. Jaku to Cech and Baines to a 4,4
    B. Evans to Adam Smith and save a FT
    C. Any other way to get an Arsenal defender?

PS- Assuming Sterling to be fit which he will be and Lukaku if out for the weekend, will bench him for Capoue.

Get rid of Holebas or Evans?

The one I keep will only be sitting on my bench so fixtures are fairly irrelevant. Just which one is best for season keeper safe points.

As for Holebas v. Evans. I have got both but Evans + Foster are season keepers as far as Pulis remains at WBA so I'm a little biased and will go for Evans. And seeing as you'll be benching Holebas for his good fixtures anyway, there goes the main reason to keep him (at least in the short/medium-term)

Vertonghen one of the few defenders with 0.0 threat in the ICT index 😯 .. reckon he is worth the outlay with 0 goal threat? atleast he seems to be getting a high bps score(Crossed 27 bps three times and already got 2 baps). The good thing about him is that he should play every game when fit since CB's dont tend to get rotated even around UCL fixtures etc. Still is he worth 5.5?

    1. drughi

Can't comment on Wilshere other than the highlights from his last game. He hit the woodwork 2x I believe. But his minutes are still being restricted so you probably won't get a full game from him for a while.

I don't think Wilshere was is on any set pieces and that's a good point raised, Snodgrass wins out then IMO. Decent run of fixtures, on all setpieces and the attack runs through him.

With regards to Tekker's tough fixtures --Leicester's defence has been all over the place this season, I reckon Benteke will be handful for their CBs.
Palace also seem to be Liverpool's voodoo team the last couple of seasons and Tekkers himself used to wreck havoc on them back when he was at Villa and I expect he returns to torment the Liverpool defence again. And this is a side whose gameplan seems to be to outscore opponents. He'll have chances. And last we have who City are still looking for a CS in a league game. I'd hedge my bet with Tekkers.

Then it's decent fixtures until United in GW16.

Just after a bit of advice kind people. Current team with 1ft & 0.0itb.

    Foster (Jaku)
    Bellerin, Walker, Valencia (McAuley, Amat)
    Sanchez, Firmino, Antonio, Snodgrass (Capoue)
    Aguero, Costa (c), Rashford

Will use my ft (Valencia out & Holebas in) to generate 1.0m cash.
Are any of these trades worth a -4 hit.
    (a) Jaku out - Pickford in & play Pickford over Foster or
    (b) Rashford out - Defoe in (away game theory re goals scored as next 4 of 5 are away. Did consider Deeney but don't want 3 Watford)

    Thoughts & thanks.

B cos you maximize your attacking returns. For whatever reason, Vertonghen doesn't bother with FKs anymore and isn't as dangerous on set pieces. With B, you get Spurs fullback threat + Koscielny's goals.

Beats only having Bellerin's assists + Verts cleanies no?

There was something posted previously that Lukaku has travelled with the Belgium squad for the next game. It implied that he'll be ok.

To answer your question = Defoe.

Is 456 points from your captain a good score for the season?

Yes, if that were one player they would have scored 228 points.

I have 2ft and not shipping him.
      Last 5 Seasons - 28, 30, 26, 19, 31 league goals.
I don't think this season isn't going to be any different. (Yes harder league/older argument, but you just have go with your gut)

Keep Evans. Get Vertonghen. Otherwise, Holebas or Smith (seems to be popular on here) for cheap options.

I'd rather Williams over Morgan tbh.

I mostly use SPSS for my daily bread and butter data analysis work. For this (see below), I need to go more open source and I know some R (and Python isn't an option as of now) 🙁

Yeah, NLKT seems to be the tool of choice for NLP.

Bascially, what I need to do is this: I got a bunch of verbatim comments. Around 80,000 and they are spoken by 6-7 people (call them categories if you will) - the training data

Now I have additional 20,000 verbatims for which I need to predict who spoke them (categorize them among the previously mentioned categories)

          I can't help you much I'm afraid.

It's an interesting read, nice work.

Comparing Clyne's heat map versus Leicester with Valencia against City (when Utd got drilled) doesn't seem fair to be honest. The point about Clyne being attacking still stands.

Is Danny Rose worth the investment?

He consistently misses 10+ league games a season, already missed 3 so far this season.

Shame because he is apart of possibly the best defense and very attacking. 1 goal and 7 assists last season and already 1 goal and 1 assist this season.

If he played every game he would easily be the highest scoring defender.

Likewise Walker has been known to miss chunks of seasons before.

Not worth the risk when I have Amat waiting in the wings with his weekly 1 point?

Besides Arsenal defenders for the next 3 games I don't think there are any premium defenders are essential.

There is a lull in fixtures until about GW 15 for teams which have decent premium defender options so I think you can punt until then.

I think Marcos Alonso might turn out to be a gem once Chelsea get a kind run of fixtures.

Probably not worth it if you're picking for the season but you have one transfer a week, why would you ignore someone with a big potential for points when you can transfer them out if they get injured?

Took a long and leisurely Sunday morning look at my team and at the moment I'm looking at abandoning 3-4-3 and going 3-5-2.

Don't like deviating from 3 up top but would you rather Son/Walcott or Benteke/Rashford between now and Christmas?

      So if will be either:

      Austin Aguero Benteke
