Mauricio Pochettino is optimistic on Toby Alderweireld’s leg problem. Mark Hughes admits Stoke are managing Joe Allen’s ongoing injury issues, while Burnley await news on Steven Defour’s hamstring complaint.

Here’s a round up of the new injury concerns that cropped up over the weekend.

Toby Alderweireld

There appears to be fairly positive news surrounding the knee injury suffered by Toby Alderweireld in the 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion.

Reports suggest the Belgian may be fit to return against Leicester City in Gameweek 10, while Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino saidsaid the problem doesn’t appear as bad as first feared:

“We need to wait for the scan but we believe it’s not a big issue. He got a knock on his leg but it was better yesterday (Sunday) and today (Monday). We need to wait for the results of the scan but I hope it’s nothing too important.”

Missing Saturday’s trip would be a blow to Alderweireld’s 18.2% ownership in FPL, with Eric Dier likely to deputise against the Baggies this weekend.

The Belgian’s likely short-term absence is good news for those holding the likes of Kyle Walker, then, as Tottenham prepare to face Leicester City, Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea in a four-match stretch over Gameweeks 10-13.

Joe Allen, Phil Bardsley

While Joe Allen has been in outstanding form for the Potters, Mark Hughes revealed they are having to be careful with the Wales international as they manage an ongoing hamstring issue.

Allen was replaced late in the second period, with his manager explaining the withdrawal was no more than a precaution:

“We have to be mindful he’s working exceptionally hard because that’s the kind of player he is and so injury-wise we are going to have to wrap him up, certainly early in the week, but if we can get him out on the pitch he’s going to have an outstanding season, we feel.”

Phil Bardsley limped off during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sunderland, and is a doubt for this weekend’s trip to Hull.

Should the right-back be ruled out, either Geoff Cameron or Marc Muniesa may have to deputise at the KCOM Stadium.

Leighton Baines

Reports in the local press suggest the Everton left-back is doubtful for the weekend trip to Burnley.

Baines had missed Gameweek 6-7 with the problem but was passed fit for last weekend’s visit to Man City only to suffer a setback in training.

The Toffees have conceded just six times this term – only Spurs have shipped less – but with clashes against West Ham, Chelsea, Southampton and Man United also to follow over the next six, Baines’ 8.2% of FPL owners may decide to part company if he fails to make it for Turf Moor.

Steven Defour

The Belgian was forced off 41 minutes into Sunday’s match against Southampton with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, with Burnley manager Sean Dyche revealing he is unsure on when we can expect to see the midfielder back in action:

“I don’t know yet, it’s too early to say. I think it’s a hamstring, so it’s too early to tell the severity.”

Youngster Aiden O’Neill replaced Defour in midfield against Saints, and while Dyche revealed he had no idea on whether Defour would be fit to face Everton on Saturday, he admitted O’Neill benefitted hugely from making another Premier League appearance:

“I’ve no clue (for Everton). That’s not ideal but, on the other hand, it gave young Aiden (O’Neill) another chance. He’s 18 and doing a really good job, and maturing nicely. It will do him no harm at all, even in tough circumstances like that. It’s part of your growth as a player.”

Dyche may have no concerns about starting O’Neill against the Toffees then should Defour be ruled out, with Scott Arfield perhaps another option to join Dean Marney and Jeff Hendrick in central midfield for the Clarets.

Max Gradel, Brad Smith, Lewis Cook and Harry Arter

Of the four players, it’s Lewis Cook who according to Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is the most likely to spend an extended period on the sidelines.

Howe revealed that Cook suffered an ankle injury while on international duty for England U20s, with the club awaiting information surrounding the exact timescale of the injury once the youngster sees a specialist.

Brad Smith suffered a foot injury while playing for Australia during the international break, with Howe again unsure on how long the injury would keep the left-back out for:

“Brad took a nasty whack on the top of his foot so we’re not sure how long he’s going to be out.”

The Cherries boss sounded more hopeful on Max Gradel’s hamstring injury, though, saying, “we don’t think it’s serious.”

Of the most concern would have been the sight of Harry Arter leaving the Vitality Stadium on crutches following Saturday’s 6-1 win over Hull City after feeling the effects of a first-half challenge from Robert Snodgrass.

The Republic of Ireland international did carry on and complete the full 90 minutes, though, despite the whack on the knee, perhaps suggesting the problem won’t rule him out of Saturday’s home clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Were Arter to be ruled out against Spurs, Dan Gosling would be the obvious replacement in the Bournemouth midfield.

Branislav Ivanovic, John Obi Mikel, Oscar and Cesc Fabregas

In the aftermath of Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Leicester City, the club’s official website explained the absences of Branislav Ivanovic, John Obi Mikel, Oscar and Cesc Fabregas. Ivanovic, Mikel and Fabregas missed the match due to “minor muscle injuries”, while Oscar was unavailable due to a serious family illness.

Given how well the Blues played last Saturday, it’s unlikely any of the four players will push for starting spots against Man United on Sunday even if they are passed fit, with places among the substitutes more realistic.

Andrew Robertson

Hull City were dealt a huge blow following Saturday’s 6-1 defeat to Bournemouth with the news that left-back Andrew Robertson is set to be sidelined for up to eight weeks after suffering a calf injury.

Tigers boss Mike Phelan doesn’t look to have many options to replace the Scotland international, with one of Sam Clucas, Harry Maguire or even David Meyler perhaps having to fill in at left back.

Nampalys Mendy

The Leicester City midfielder has had to undergo surgery on an ankle injury, and is set to be ruled out for up to five weeks, according to his manager Claudio Ranieri:

“Mendy was unlucky. In the last training session he had a little fracture of the bone. I think today (Monday) he is in surgery just to clean this little fragment of bone out. It depends how long, it could be four weeks or five weeks. I don’t know.”

The Italian is expected to continue with Danny Drinkwater and Daniel Amartey as his first choice partnership in central midfield then, with Andy King also likely to see plenty of playing time as Ranieri looks to juggle the demands of Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin

Both Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin were ruled out of the trip to Anfield after picking up injuries in training last Saturday.

The club’s official website suggests the pair were both nursing knocks, so with Man United playing Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday night before travelling to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday, we may get an update on their fitness in Jose Mourinho’s pre-match press conference tomorrow.

Patrick van Aanholt

The Dutch left-back was forced off against Stoke City last weekend due to an adductor injury. The defender, who is owned by 4.9% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses, is now doubtful for Saturday’s trip to West Ham.

Should Van Aanholt be ruled out, Sunderland manager David Moyes may use Javier Manquillo at left-back, with Billy Jones, who replaced Van Aanholt on Saturday, starting at right-back. Donald Love is another option for Moyes in the full back positions.

Modou Barrow

The Gambian winger was one of the stand-out performers in Swansea City’s 3-2 defeat to Arsenal. But Barrow was forced off with an ankle injury that he picked up in the challenge which saw Granit Xhaka sent off for violent conduct.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Barrow revealed he was also suffering from cramp, which was perhaps the reason he could no longer continue, along with the fact he was already having to manage an existing ankle problem before Saturday’s 3-2 defeat:

“I have been having treatment on my ankle for a while. It felt much better on Saturday, but I got a kick in the same place during the game. I tried to continue, but I got some cramp as well. I tried to be positive and work for the team until the end, but in the last few minutes I could not do that.”

It appears Barrow should have a good chance of recovering in time for Saturday’s home clash against Watford, and with Jefferson Montero also dealing with an ankle injury, and Nathan Dyer a long-term absentee, new Swansea manager Bob Bradley will be desperate to have Barrow available to face the Hornets.

Matt Targett

Targett picked up a hamstring injury during the first-half of Sunday’s 3-0 win against Burnley, and isn’t expected to travel for Thursday night’s Europa League match against Inter Milan.

Sam McQueen replaced Targett against the Clarets, and may have to deputise for the England U21 against Man City in the Premier League on Sunday too should Targett be ruled out, with Ryan Bertrand’s hamstring injury appearing worse than first feared. With Cedric Soares also remaining sidelined for the Etihad encounter, the Saints’ chances of keeping out Pep Guardiola’s side look increasingly unlikely.

My rival (8 points ahead) has virtually the same team as me and it seems the only real differential I have to him is Firmino.

Should I captain Firmino or just play safe with another?

Just go with whoever you think is most likely to score. He might go different anyway and there is far too long to go to worry about differential captain picks to make up ground.

Ok here is about as basic evidence you can get to back up a 352. 15 mids have more than 40 point. 3 forwards do and Defoe scrapes in at 40. 2 defenders costing over 6.0 mil do also but further to this the attackers in general cost more too. QED?

I'm sold. Went 3-5-2 last week on WC. Too many good mids not to have 5

I am really thinking lose Kun in a few weeks when Chelsea fixtures turn for the good get Hazard and also Sanchez KDB Firmino and Walcott and still 17 to 18 mil up front. Could be Kane / Lukaku and Austin. Looks so good.

Yeah it's nearly mid December before Chelsea fixtures turn, the other nice option upfront would be Kane a non option now as well.

That is fine as an aggregate view.

When looking at your own team it comes down to whether the 5th mf you can afford is better than the 3rd striker you can afford.

Most the sustainable midfield options from your list are 7m+. Can you afford them with sanchez, aguero, lukaku? Probably not

What about lower down? Are there any options under 6.5m better than Austin.

Ive gone 3-5-2 but stuck with iwobi as my 5th. Would rather Austin that is for sure

Might point kinda is that I really don't care who the front 2 are or what they cost as a 6.5 is about as likely as a 9-11 to perform. Will just rotate in and out based on fixtures. Also losing Kun up front lets you have whatever 5 mids you want.

        Good points.

There's another way to do it; I've gone 352 with Aguero & Austin up top; that allows me enough funds for 5x 7m+ mids. I don't think there's any best formation though; or if there is, it'll change week on week.

My lowest mid right now cost 7 but I only have Kun and Rashford upfront. Yes you are correct I can't afford a much more expensive second forward right now without 5th mid downgrade.

I have always been a 3-4-3 player, but the midfield options this year are just too good not to consider a formation change.

I'm moving toward a front seven of:

      Sanchez - Walcott - Firmino - Coutinho - Sterling - Austin - Aguero

I'm having a hard time coming up with a 3-4-3 that I like more.

      As you say, very basic.

I have given this some thought. The main issue with 3-5-2 is the lack of flexibility it gives you. It makes you less able to be agile to quick changes of form/fixtures.

I think that's always the case every season no? The mids will always outscore the fwd. One of the main reasons are due to high scoring and assists mids(Sanchez,Mahrez,Hazard,KDB) and due to them getting 5 points per goal. A 12 goal per season mid will get 60 points from goals and a fwd needs 15 to match it. Looking at the current goals tally, mids are scoring across the board. The fact that some mids are being played off position helps too. And also the fact that some teams are so dynamic that it doesn't matter which position they are playing (Liverpool,Arsenal,Southampton) for example.

As long as there are more midfielders than forwards, there will always be more successful midfielders than successful forwards.

Good luck filtering out the underperforming midfielders (there are more than 15) to find the good ones. Choosing 3-5-2 makes it much more likely that you'll find the next Lamela or Antonio whose form will deteriorate, whereas a third striker's form is more predictable and sustainable.

I've been playing that all season, fully agree, forget about the big hitters, the midfield has far more options to choose from in the £7.0m range than strikers do.

100% agree. Always been a 3-4-3 man, but not this season.

      KDB Sanchez Firmino Son Allen
      Aguero Lukaku

Is what i'm looking at now.

Bournemouth fixtures are average at best and the focal point of their attack only got a goal and an assist out of 6 goals. Austin is 1st for strikers last 4 weeks since he's started for stats+goals. That's ahead of Costa Lukaku Aguero Ibra

Here's that Wilson quote re pens

Wilson was also full of praise for the red-hot Stanislas, although the former Coventry City man admitted he would have liked to take the first-half penalty his team-mate slammed high into the net.

“I’d won the penalty and as a striker, naturally, not having scored, I wanted it,” he said.

“The ball was thrown over my head and one of their players gave it to Junior before I got a chance to get over there. So I wasn't going to put him off, I let him take it. He assisted me last time (against Watford), so he can have it this week!

    Capoue to Allen

I've seen people on here talking about making this 5th midfielder swap. I just don't get it!
Fair enough wanting to cash in on Capoue but you will not be freeing up this cash by picking Allen as 5th mid.
If you are playing 343 you will be benching Allen most of (or all of) the time, so why not pick someone like Fletcher and free up the Capoue money?
If you are playing 352 surely there are better options than Allen going forward?

Capone is unlikely to rise further whereas Allen will be back at 5 before you know it.

Obviously if you have pressing issue elsewhere its unnecessary and certainly not for a hit, if your team is set up well for the next few games its worth a shot for the above reason

Catching a Price rises seems much more important this season than others for some reason

Well, I made the Capoue to Allen move as I didn't have any other pressing matters, Allen looks like a better bet for points in the mid-term at least (both have good fixtures) and bluntly, Capoue won't be rising in price any time soon but Allen will. This means, in addition to the £0.1m profit I've made from the transfer (bought at £4.5m in my original team, sold for £4.9m), Allen is due to rise at least a couple of times in the next week or so and this is all banked cash now.

Yes, if you have other issues then I'd do them first but this one seemed very sensible and with Stoke's fixtures, I can see myself starting him at least 2-3 times in the next six weeks.

I was playing Capoue as fourth mid due to all the big hitters that I have. Switching to Allen makes perfect sense for me due to team value, fixtures and better stats than Capoue

Allen is currently on a wave of form, Capoue's wave has died down, it's all about catching waves sometimes in fpl. If you are buying Allen for Capoue to put on the bench then that would be worthless but if you're gonna play him then he's far more likely to score than Capoue at present.

capoue has probably maxed out his price potential.
Allen will see price rises if he continues anything near current form.
Happier to have him as 1st sub than Capoue.
I can see me starting him a couple of times over next few weeks with Stoke's fixtures.

I sometimes think that FFS has become the home of points-chasers.

If they did well last week, get them. If they didn't, dump them. So much fashion, so little thought sometimes.

This is not a direct response to your post btw. It's just that 2 weeks ago people were taking hits to get Son in. 2 weeks before that they were taking hits to get Antonio in and now his name is mud around here. 😕

In direct response to your question, I'd lose Son. He is more of a rotation/gametime risk than Mané while Spurs have CL ongoing and in addition Spurs' fixtures aren't the greatest with 3 tough away games on the horizon. But that's why I wasn't interested in getting him in the first place. 😕

Yes it is points chasing but owned Mane since GW3 and Son for a couple of weeks now. Watched both games last night and tonight and was unimpressed with both, plus Walcott is approaching a must have. I don't think it's unfair to want a more in form player on a free. Appreciate the response and the rotation of Son does bother me where as Mane appears nailed on - thanks

Yes. To be clear, I wasn't aiming that at you. Just a general comment.

Mané owners I have sympathy with. I decided not to play the Liverpool midfield lottery but if I had gone for one it would have been him. And I still suspect he'll turn out the best over the next 10 games.

Listening to the Scoutcast now. Mark saying "Costa's going to get a red at some point" and gets shot down by the others. The fact is that Costa knows what he's doing. He's not undisciplined. You only have to look at how he's avoided a yellow in his last two games as he's close to suspension.

Wenger was never afraid to bench Walcott when he wasn't in form, I think he always plays his best team. Right now, Walcott's in great form and so I don't see him being dropped unless his performances also dip.

With players like that on the bench though the 60 min sub is much more likely. I think Walcotts leash will be short, wenger loves Ramsey.

Ramsey's best position is CM though not RW. There's so much competition when they're all fit. Coq, Xhaka, Elneny, Cazorla, Ramsey for two spots. He loves Cazorla too so maybe Ramsey will have to play out of position on the right.

I'm happy to ride the Theo train for the next few weeks at least though while he's banging in the goals. Should've had 4 or 5 at the weekend

yeah, saw that but Austin is on form and remember QPR a few seasons ago - he was fixtureproof.

I guess it's Austin with not great fixtures vs. Wilson with OK fixtures.

Neither are Bournemouths. Austin is best stats+goals striker last 4 weeks and scores against anyone

    3. Ruth_NZ

      9 years, 2 months ago

      Wilson.

He has a pronounced tendency over his career to score his goals in clusters, very much a 'confidence' player (as quite a few strikers are). And he certainly has the fixtures.

Southampton have much tougher fixtures and also EL to handle. There is more likelihood of rotation there (though Long seems to be playing EL and Austin PL) and they are facing the dreaded Thursday-Sunday routine quite often.

There is a natural switch from Wilson to Austin in GW13, by which time Southampton's fixtures are improving and EL is almost out of the way. So that's the way I'd do it.

      1. Pochecinno
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

Austin is arguably in better form and was fixture-proof in his QPR - now he is playing in a better team. And as you say, he's not really playing the EL.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 2 months ago

No, but his team are. 😕

As for "fixture proof", are you sure? He scored 18 goals that season for QPR. 14 came against bottom-half teams. 4 were against top-half teams.

Austin is in sharp form, no doubt. More in question is how many goals Southampton will score with City, Chelsea, Hull, Liverpool and Everton as their next 5 opponents. And 3 of those will be Sunday games after Thursday EL, where their opponents will have had more rest and preparation time.

In 2014/15 he returned in 44% of games against top 5 teams.

            So there is that.

Yeah, he scored twice against Arsenal didn't he?

Hey, who knows? I think Wilson is the better bet for the next 4/5 weeks and have said why. But Austin could prove me wrong. As neither is (nor will be) in my team I don't really have an axe to grind about it.

Problem is if Liverpool draw 0:0 in one of those games, or win 1:0 by a Milner pen then 75% of your midfield is blanking.

Look at last night for example...

Wilson vs Austin: My 2 cents

Bournemouth fixtures are average at best and the focal point of their attack only got a goal and an assist out of 6 goals. Austin is 1st for strikers last 4 weeks since he's started for stats+goals. That's ahead of Costa Lukaku Aguero Ibra

Need some advice here guys, I played my w/c last week, managed the grand score of 20 god damn points! (Holebas and Heaton on bench) I wonder why I bother sometimes!

    Heaton - Pickford
    Koscielny - Vertonghen - Holebas - Amat - Smith
    Sanchez - Firmino - Coutinho - Son - Hojberg
    Aguero - Benteke - Deeney

Do I dump Sanchez and Benteke for Walcott and Lukaku (4 point hit)?

won't say that austin and wilson are essential. Austin played Burnley who concedes alot on the road. Wilson played Hull who concedes an average of 4 goals for the last 4 weeks...Soton is playing Man City while Bou is at home to Spurs. They are not Burnley and Hull.

Siggy has the potential with favourite fixtures though.

your team looks fine. really, it's just one of these week where you have 2 strikers who both missed penalties. That's a minimum of 12 points swing (8 if scored, and -4 due to miss). That's not counting the bonus points. Just sit tight for the moment. =)

Didn't think I'd start Allen, or I would've got him last night before the rise. Ummm, I don't know.. I know Holebas is an upgrade to Stones, but if you look at City's upcoming fixtures, if there was ever a time to maybe keep the faith in a City defender, it would be now. I think the Southampton game would be a low scoring game, so a clean sheet is possible there too. I don't know. My other defenders are Valencia, McAuley, Amat and Smith. Think I might hold off on Holebas for now.
