With the last international break of the calendar year now finally behind us, we settle down to our usual pre-Gameweek members article this Friday evening.

First up, we analyse the main contenders in this week’s Captain Poll, before assessing the Opta numbers and Rate My Team rankings and suggesting some differentials to help solve your armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Man City’s trip to Selhurst Park ensures that Sergio Aguero is, once again, the favourite for this week’s armband.

Selected by 36% of voters, Argentine has scored twice in three of his four away appearances and faces an Eagles backline that, along with Sunderland, have yet to chalk up a single clean sheet.

Aguero played just 45 minutes of his nation’s recent couple of international, which bodes well for his pitch time against Palace.

A home clash against Swansea City earns Romelu Lukaku second spot.

Despite blanking against Chelsea’s resilient rearguard, the Everton striker – who warmed up for this weekend with two goals and an assist in Belgium’s 8-1 thrashing of Estonia – is backed by over 24% of voters.

Lukaku has been in fine form in front of his own fans, netting in three of four home appearances, and faces a defence that have conceded three times in all but one of Bob Bradley’s four matches in charge.

Eden Hazard and Diego Costa earn just 11% and 2% of the votes cast respectively as Chelsea make their way to Middlesbrough.

Subject to a huge bandwagon over the break on the back of five goals and two assists in the previous four Gameweeks, Hazard has been passed fit after sustaining a knock to the calf while playing for Belgium in midweek.

Costa has recovered from a groin problem in time for Sunday’s encounter and betters his team-mate by five goals to one away from home.

They might not have it all their own way on Teesside, though.

‘Boro have conceded just once in the last three, which includes clashes against Arsenal and Man City, and have been breached just six times in five home fixtures this season.

Alexis Sanchez collects just 6% of the votes for Arsenal’s trip to Man United.

That relatively low percentage can be attributed to doubts over his fitness prior to Chile’s clash with Uruguay in midweek.

Having returned to action by bagging a brace for his nation, Sanchez – who has three sets of double-figures on the road – visits a United defence with two clean sheets in eight.

Philippe Coutinho earns 3% of the votes for Liverpool’s trip to St Mary’s, though with minor concerns over a tight hamstring, handing him the armband carries a degree of risk. Team-mates Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane hover around the 1%-mark and could prove deadly captaincy differentials.

A home encounter with Hull City looks promising for Jermain Defoe.

The veteran’s goal and assist at Bournemouth means he has played a part in 77% of Sunderland’s strikes this season as he prepares to face a defence that’s conceded 13 times in five road trips.

Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne look ready-made differentials with 1% of the votes.

Tottenham’s frontman returned to action with a converted spot-kick at Arsenal and has netted in his last three league appearances ahead of a home clash with West Ham.

De Bruyne, meanwhile, has produced attacking returns in all four of his away appearances as City roll up to Palace.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Lukaku or Aguero (c) ?

I'm not the only one who's torn then.

I switched to Lukkau (C) today and I'm confident. For now.

Aguero. Been great away from home and Palace have to use their 2nd choice keeper.

I want to do lukaku but I'm wary because, well, it's Aguero. Lukaku only scored more than one goal once this year though. Lukaku and everton's stats are worse so it's only really down to it being against Swansea. I might have just convinced myself to do aguero

No but he was injured for a few weeks and was sent home from international duty early so he could work on his fitness. 72 minutes is not 90. I don't have Kane but if I did, I would still captain Aguero. The league's best striker against a team that has just had their first choice keeper declared injured.

Tough call on whether to swap out Coutinho for Firmino - also very surprised not to see Moses in more teams.

Should I save my FT is the question?

    Foster - Jaku
    Clyne - Alonso - Amat - MaAuley - Francis
    Sanchez - Coutinho - Mane - Gundogan - Capoue
    Aguero - Lukaku - Austin

    ....and who to bench.

I would get Firmino is Couts is out

Really want Haz but still think Sanchez is the man over the full season. The Coutinho thing is such a hard call, at the rate he's being transferred out he'll be a differential come lunch time tomorrow!

Yes, Sanchez is a keeper if fit
But if Couts doesn't player...well thats 8.7 wasted, where firmino could easily haul

See below - I get what you're saying but, as mentioned below, that's not how we use HT's.

I don't want us being restricted to just HT'ing items that we agree with. We even HT stuff where we're being criticised eg the Hazard flag last week.

In the case of Aguero, we could have referred to the link in our article so it's clear we don't endorse.

It's ironic, because I was going to post on that HT earlier about whether there's a chance that Fantasy Football managers almost being used as clickbait by the press who may even be aware that players like Aguero and Coutinho will get them FPL manager traffic. I really wish I had now as that would have given a better view of our stance on it. But you've read a completing different stance - one that endorses it.

By all means read our words as representing how we view things, but please don't read things into every action we do around them in other areas of the site - they can be interpreted in several ways.

But Hot Topics aren't FFS endorsing anything - they are flagging up discussions that are active or of interest.

We're not agreeing with the content of the article - the mods were just bringing the chat to folk's attention.

I've now removed the HT from the said article to stop others from jumping to this conclusion.

We'll have a think about how we phrase HT's from here on in to prevent this being the interpretation.

We're not going to restrict HT's to stuff we agree with or fully endorse - that's not the point.

thank you for replying, I just wanted to voice my frustration at the post getting made a hot topic, which people are more likely to read, when it really wasn't important, if you read peps quotes he mentions resting players that played 180 mins, he makes no mention of resting aguero, I just don't think it should have been highlighted as it could influence peoples C decision, and you say that you don't agree with all hts, which is great, however I think people assume you do

I would put Walcott in for Erikson. Although you're probably planning on doing this in a week, I think you may as well just do it now. Upside of Erik versus west ham not worth it. Also won't want to switch de bruyne to Sanchez as he is quality and your city cover

Good point. Going to find it hard to fit a Gooner in there but that is what the cash is for.

Spurs just aren't scoring goals and Erikson has been awful this season. I know they have west ham at home and dele is out, but just think you're better off including Walcott from the off. You will want to keep the pool double up and hazard too

      Coutinho***

      No Kun

Really weak bench coming into congested Xmas break.

Front 8 looks ok, like the Eriksen pick this week but not long term

      Defense needs work
Consider Cedric over Pieters or even Holebas/Smith despite suspensions they are still great picks long term
van der Hoorn over Kingsley, 0.2 more and seems a bit more nailed but still is it even worth having a SWA def at this point?

        Thanks for the constructive feedback.

Cash for Pieters to Cedric in the next 2 GWs:
        Had Holebas all season but he's now playing deeper and Capoue/Amrabat getting more SPs so without CS potential his value has diminished;
Kingsley is an enabler only - can't justify extra 0.2 for VdH despite goal with new coach.

Need to make another -4 (adds upto -8) transfer to swap Bellerin, who to get?

    Pickford
    BELLERIN Amat McAuley
    Allen Coutinho Firmino Antonio
    Ibra Aguero Lukaku

    Heaton Capoue Holebas Smith

Alonso (or another Chelsea DEF) would be my first choice. If you want to save some money then maybe a Southampton DEF and then upgrade Allen or Antonio (sorry, don't rate Stoke or West Ham this season)

    Heaton
    PVA | McAuley | Clyne
    Hazard | Walcott | Firmino | Gundogan | Allen
    Aguero | Lukaku (c)

    Pickford | Benteke | Amat | Bellerin*

    Anything worth a hit?
    Start Benteke over Allen/Gundo?

      Here's something extravagant

This week do Benteke and Gundogan-->Austin and De Roon for -4, start Austin. Should save you quite a bit
Next gw, do Allen-->Coutinho and you will have an awesome team (especially front 7)

      1. Donblaster

That's too extravagant for me! Also already done Payet to Hazard this week so 2 transfers would be -8.

        Cheers tho!

Sell Lallana for a hit and get:

    A) Coutinho (already have Mane)
    B) Gundogan

None of them imo. Cout will be rested likely. And don't like Gundo.

    Strawpoll. Stuck with this decision:

    A) Play Allen
    B) Play C Wilson
    C) Get Charlie Austin in for C Wilson

    1. Crystal Ball

C - Austin a better choice in long term, Wilson might not play and has tough fixtures after. Stoke looking good defensively anyway

Had Firmino all season, but working on long term plan to go from Allen to Coutinho. Will require Lukaku to Austin and a little more, but will get there.
