Liverpool have this evening confirmed that Philippe Coutinho is expected to be sidelined for “between five and a few weeks” weeks with the ankle injury sustained against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

The rather confused prognosis arrives via a Jurgen Klopp interview on a Radio 5 live interview prior to tonight’s EFL Cup tie with Leeds United.

However, the article from the clubs states that Coutinho is set to be absent until the New Year. In all likelihood, the Brazilian will be targeting a return against Manchester United on January 14, which arrives in Gameweek 21.

The Brazilian headed into Gameweek 13 as the most popular player in Fantasy Premier League but has already been subject to significant sales – over 380,000 have already parted company since the weekend deadline, with Coutinho’s price slipping from 8.8 to 8.6.

Although there’s no doubt that Coutinho’s absence is a bitter blow to the Merseysiders and Fantasy managers alike, with clashes against Bournemouth, West Ham, Middlesbrough, Everton and Stoke in the next five fixtures, the schedule is still very much in favour of Klopp’s side.

Those kind upcoming matches may well now see Roberto Firmino emerge as the Liverpool weapon of choice – providing he shrugs off a minor calf complaint. He was unable to figure in tonight’s cup tie.

Firmino has the slight edge on his team-mate for points per match (6.1 to 6.0), whilst Sadio Mane’s 5.8 points per appearance could also persuade those keen to reinvest in the Anfield outfit. Mane does start against Leeds United.

It’s fair to say that the FPL transfer market is set to intensify, with the likes of Theo Walcott, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Pedro all building momentum in the mid-price bracket.

Similarly, Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen has also thrown his hat into the ring ahead of home encounters against Swansea, Hull and Burnley in the next four.

Those yet to acquire Eden Hazard may now feel the time is right, with the schedule smiling very kindly on Chelsea once this week’s trip to Man City has passed.

Elsewhere in London, Alexis Sanchez served a timely reminder that you get what you pay for with a brace against Bournemouth and is now just one point behind Hazard at the top of the FPL standings.

Walcott’s second-half strike also keeps him in contention. Now up to fifth in the midfield rankings, he’s produced 5.9 points per match to Sanchez’ 6.7 yet is 3.4 cheaper on the budget ahead of a trip to West Ham.

    Pickford
    Pieters - Evans - Monreal
    Ozil - Firmino - Phillips - Coutinho
    Aguero - Costa - Austin

    Jaku, Gundogan, Zabaleta, Williams

    A) Coutinho -> Sigurdsson for free (£1.4m ITB to next GW)
    B) Coutinho & Williams -> Sigurdsson & Alonso -4.

A ....spend the points (if needed) next week to bring in Alonso

If you were to spend points this week, would only do it for (C) Kane

a Costa yellow card this weekend sure would solve a lot of fantasy problems/decisions. Anyone else in the same boat?

Hmm not really. I bought Costa at 9.6 so I'm not going to sell for just one game.

That card only has a chance of being brandished if City are leading Chelsea with 5 mins to go. Praying for that. Else going from no chelsea to 2/3 Chelsea in 1 week is going to be disastrous.

It would only solve the problems for one week - then he's got a pass and is the form forward in fpl. Maybe that's what you meant?

Replacement for Coutinho for me was either to be Firmino or Mane. First off, especially with Liverpool's fixtures, it would be utterly ridiculous not to have Pool attacking cover.

Very tough choice; Firmino's previous stats as well as this season's underlying stats are stronger. Mane's stats not too far behind though. Firmino obviously a few ticks cheaper as well which can also prove to be significant. (Firmino's historical stats and current underlying stats are also stronger than Coutinho's for the record).

My rationale to take Mane is as follows; first off, we don't know for sure if Bobby plays this weekend. I don't want to wait for another Philippe price drop and / or another Mane price rise. Mane historically has been more resilient to injury, something that can prove decisive in a tight Christmas schedule. Firmino has more all round ability I reckon insofar as he may fill a deeper role in Coutinho's absence. Mane's attacking position will certainly not be drawn back deeper. And the decider; Mane will be off to African Nations Cup in January. Klopp will try to extract maximum value from Mane over the tight festive period. He's not concerned about Senegal's finishing position in the Cup! Firmino will more likely be rested.

And there you have it kids; mathematical logic and precision at it's finest.

You lost me at "utterly ridiculous not to have Pool attacking cover" and you are only considering 2 midfield options, one of which is deemed too unfit to even be in the squad today.

And have you actually looked at Liverpools long term fixtures? To me it seems like people have forgotten to actually take a look at their fixtures since this whole "amazing run of fixtures" started.

I am happy to go without a Pool mid for the foreseeable future with all things considered. I could be proven wrong of course, but calling it utterly ridiculous to do that is just narrow-minded.

hahahahahaha I've an aching stomach from your response!! 'Narrow minded' ???Pool have been banging goals in for fun, and seem to be relatively fixture proof. 4 scored vs last season's Champions. 4 scored vs last season's runners up. 3 scored vs Chelsea, league's best defense. And you're going to go without cover? And they've also no Europe.I assume your post is sarcasm or some form of modern comedy?

          Holy sheet, you are arrogant.

I personally think they will lose some of their attacking momentum without Coutinho. Firmino is still a slight doubt for the weekend, as is Lallana who is also a big factor in their attacking play (look at their last two).

Again I PERSONALLY believe that it will take some adjusting to do playing with Origi/Sturridge as striker option with Firmino moving to the left or however they will set up.

I think one of the reasons why the Pool mids have been SUCH good value is partially because they have been sharing the point among the mids with no forwards playing.

With other options emerging, I would rather bet on them and have a differential team.

Again I could be wrong, but hopefully I will be right so I can throw this ridiculous post right back in your smug face.

Well actually Lizard, no; you've no basis to accuse me of arrogance. I initially shared my rationale as to why I believe Mane to be currently a better prospect than Firmino. I've no issue with anyone disagreeing with this point; the differing points of view are what makes the game the great game that it is. Rather than simply engaging with my points and / or attempting to dispute; you decided to engage in an ad hominem form of argument; calling me 'narrow minded'. Again no problem, I took it in jest.

And again, you decided to mistake what is essentially intellectual exercise (i.e. rational argument) and you respond again aggressively, calling me arrogant and of having a 'smug face'. Wow. Just wow. You don't have a very strong sense of irony do you? You're accusing me of what you've proven to be yourself; arrogant. As well as overly sensitive, aggressive, impulsive, immature and generally reprehensible. I realise that lizards are low lying animals; possible subconscious reason for your choice of name?

I can't help it, but after reading the comments I *have* to say Daviyb: you seem to spend a lot of time on the internet arguing with people. You got all the classic internet forum catchphrases in your flame repertoire.

Yes, he did call you narrow minded. Maybe not the gentlest way of saying 'you should broaden your horizons' but you massively overreacted and fired more than a few volleys. Plus your tone does come off very dickish.

hey Felix, you seem quite aware of what the classic internet forum catchphrases are. That's your basis for suggesting that I spend a lot of time arguing online? I don't for the record. I would love to have that sort of time on my hands. Maybe what you said is right, and my tone comes across wrong, but the points I've made, i.e. Lizard responded to my rationale with an ad hominem style argument, still stand, and I was not aggressive about it in any of my responses, unlike Lizard.

Anyway, I see that you've just began posting on this website for the first time just over an hour ago. Congratulations. And best of luck!

    2.6 ITB, 1FT, my team:

    Hazard, Firmino, Siggy, Bolasie, Allen
    Aguero, Costa, 4.4

    A) Bolasie -> Alli (I think Alli is looking good and about to hit form)
    B) 4.4 -> Austin (great fixtures, he's been banging them in)

    B) gives me room to downgrade Bolasie or Allen next week to a 4.3 and free some funds for denfense, A) could really pay off if I'm right about Alli.

Thoughts are with the Chapecoense team and fans right now, dreadful news.

At the risk of sounding callous with all the football clubs around the world and the high volume of air travel that goes on for away ties all year round, I am amazed that this doesn't happen more.

Absolutely brilliant if that is the case.

Can you imagine having to play against a team that has been decimated in such a way? Just beating them would eat away at you with guilt.

I know it is early to be looking at odds, but bet 365 has @5.5 for a Burnley CS and @3.75 for a Sunderland CS.

But a goal I love was Tony Adams beating the offside trap and bursting through Evertons defence after a one two with Martin Keown of all people. Smashed in a left foot half volley and the celebration of putting his arms up in the air. I'm not an Arsenal fan but that was ace.

I think it is definitely worth considering when making transfers. Trying to get fully nailed players, having a decent bench etc.

Still I don't let a possible one game rotation steer me clear of players I really want. Last year people were extremely worried and it turned out it wasn't a problem - for the most part.

For example I won't get rid of Sanchez based on the rotation risk. But to be honest, I always try to get players, who are nailed or playing an integral part of their teams.

      1. sminkypinky
        • 14 Years

I guess most of us do. What about the likes of Walcott, Pedro, KDB?

        1. Licious Lizard
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 8 months ago

Walcott I am staying clear off. Think he was starting to be a rotation risk even without the busy schedule. Also I can't see his returns continue with those stats. Pedro is difficult, but I would rather opt for someone like Siggy, who is nailed, as I have Hazard.

I don't consider KDB as a real rotation risk even after this week, although it seems like Pep thoroughly enjoys it.

I am dropping Gun for a -4 now as it needs to be done but have up to 8.4. Moses seems ok but dont like triple Chelsea attack. Really is no decent 4th mid at that price tbh.

Cheers, might as well keep then and do something over 2 FTs

As long as you are happy with him dropping and potentially playing 0 minutes again. I am not and already dropped 0.1. He needs to go for me long term but knowing my luck he will start and bag a brace 🙂

    Jakupick
    Morgan, Clyne, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Sanchez, Cout*, Firmino, Siggy, Fletcher
    Austin, Aguero, Costa

    1FT, 0,6 idb.

Cout to: Wally, Eriksen or Pedro? Maybe any other suggestion? Can take a hit if needed.

Best mid up to 8.4 that isn't Siggy? Already own Sanch, Haz, Firm, Costa, Aguero.

Not convinced with Erik/Alli as don't buy into the covering Kane mantra but feel like they could do well over these coming weeks. Points wise they have been poor but struggling to think of valid alternatives.

Maybe Pedro or Walcott but worry about their naildoness and Chelsea triple attack is too many eggs in 1 basket IMO.

I have 9.1 and don't know who to get. currently on Eriksen but I'm not convinced to him too.

Any suggestions what transfer I should make this week? I've 2 fts and would like Siggy but can't see how to afford him. Wouldn't mind losing Koscielny, he hasn't been performing points wise.
