“All this taking hits, it gets a bit moreish.”

One of my favourite all-time quotes from the ScoutCast arrives in this week’s episode, as Jonty does his best to explain another abject Gamework return.

Struggling with misfortune and misfiring moves, our former resident “dullard” is now resigned to chasing memories from his season – those maverick move successes he can store and take with him for future campaigns.

There’s nothing maverick about my season right now, as I furiously back-peddle on my exit plans and watch Andy and Jonty jump and fall into the no-Aguero abyss without me. Granville tries to talk me over the edge, but I’m not budging.

Elsewhere in this week’s episode, we tackle the Philippe Coutinho injury fall-out head-on, chase our tails on “essential” assets and attempt to settle the Walcott vs Sanchez and Hazard vs Pedro arguments.

This episode of the ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Kane has home record, Ibra and Costa actually have good away form .
Costa though, home and away Form is equal, as essential as it gets . I think all three have a very high chance of scoring this week.

Interesting to hear Jonty saying what he said on the scoutcast about taking hits and taking chances

I found the last 3 years that despite getting better at FPL (I worked my way up a fairly competitive league from about 30 to 20 to 10 and improved globally from top 100,000 to top 50,000 to top 30,000, I was not really enjoying the game. I found that at a higher level, the difference between teams, between winning and losing, become so reduced that opportunities for pleasure dwindle until you are pretty much hoping that one differential player you own or the 50/50 captain choice you make comes in. That's the name of the gae, I get that. It's just not much fun. So I made a pact with myself that I would make the aim of the game to try and derive pleasure from the many things that constitute a FF team and not solely from what they are reduced to: the score or ranking at the end of the week. This year i'm having more punts on gut instinct, taking more hits, experimenting with things and trying to enjoy myself

As would be expected, i'm not scoring as high this year (yet!), but i am enjoying it an awful lot more. So yeah, there is something 'moreish' about taking hits and playing with your team. It's also called 'fun'!

The game is about rank. I guarantee someone in the top 10k is enjoying it more than someone ranked around 2m.

I've no idea why you think you understand other people's experience better than themselves. Explain to me how it is that I enjoyed the game less each year despite ranking higher three times consecutively, yet in the first year that I reconsidered the notion of 'why' i'm playing the game and adjusted how i play accordingly, i'm enjoying myself a lot more?

This isn't sour grapes from a bad year. I was ranking higher each year and changed how I play this year

I dunno. Personally I know I wouldn't enjoy playing that way, there is some sort of pleasure in seeing green arrows instead of red ones. As for Jonty he has a pretty good HOF rank and I think he should take that into consideration. Maybe he's lost his competitiveness because the chips are down?

          Not true.

After many years of playing the same way and getting the same overall rank I've decided to play a different way.

Luckily I have the good history that allows me to do that.

So you're playing differently not because you have a bad rank? but because you are bored?

I'm playing differently because having a bad rank gives me the freedom to do that.

If I had a good rank then I'd play sensibly most likely and end up as bored as I have been for the last two seasons or so. I said at the end of the season before last how bored I was with barely moving for 30 weeks - just wanted the season to end by gwk 38. Last year the chips helped a bit but the same goal was there - get a high rank and try and win a couple of minileagues.

I'd like the game to offer more and better monthly prizes for managers. I think that would really help motivate people to continue.

Its a bit chicken and egg but about four gwks ago I had a decision to make - go sensible or have fun with it and try new things. I decided to go the latter for a while. What I may end up doing though is not focusing at all on it and just make minimal chances when injuries occur. That would probably improve my rank more but wouldn't be very fun.

I think money leagues are the greatest motivator/indicator of enjoyment for me.

The one year i've been absolute pants in the last few, shows, as i had no significant money leagues running.

I think there is room for a mixture of the two approaches.

If I had a good rank then I wouldn't take wild punts or take large numbers of dodgy hits. But I would look for opportunities to bring in good players ahead of the crowd, instead of being driven by high ownership. This might produce bigger gains and losses, but would surely be more interesting than just treading water by following the crowd. And if done well so that the gains outweigh the losses then it should result in a rise up through the ranks. It may be possible to maintain a consistently fairly high rank by following the dullard approach, but to get to the top I believe it is necessary to do something different from the herd.

Another option if you have a poor rank is to play for a good run in the cup or in head-to-head leagues instead.

        Quite right.

You can take each week as it comes and have some fun or you can be sensible every week and not have fun. I've said it so many times that whether high up or low down in the rankings if you are not moving and not taking chances then after a while it gets boring.

If I was higher in the rankings I'd probably be more boring with my transfers. But like the last year two years I ended up enjoying other games more - increasingly Sky, also last year ESPN - which I loved the format of.

Same this year - I enjoy the draft in dugout and Sky far more than FPL. But that's the same with anything if you do it too much, like listening to an album to death, or watching a film too many times.

My aim is to finish as high as possible or else what's the point. Where the difference comes is I always put in who u wanna put in regardless of hits and don't make moves based on who can hurt me with their ownership. Can take lots of risks this way and keep it fun

I rarely take hits (none so far this season) and generally make the sensible moves, but I still enjoy myself. I'm in a few competitive leagues so it keeps me on my toes and there's some good banter with some of the guys in it.

There are lots of different ways to enjoy the game. It's good that you and Jonty have found a way to liven up yours.

I did the same with UFPL last season when almost all my team was injured- just went for monthly prizes with strategic loans - came really really close a couple of months too to that £1,000 prize.

FPL is a big game that allows people to play in whatever way they want.

I've never been this low in the rankings or played risks in this way and as someone who spends a good chunk of their week writing about the game I feel I have a far greater appreciation of a wider chunk of FPL managers rather than just the dullards.

Ok, let's turn it around. Have you enjoyed your last seasons in FPL? With getting some ok ranks but never once getting into the top 10,000? Have you got good memories to look back on or do you think you'd like to play the game differently.

And also why have you not got into the top 10K? Would the odd risk have helped?

You don't come at this with the history of someone who has excelled in any season. I'm not getting at you its more you can't know what goes through the head of a FPL manager who has consistently finished in the top 5,000 and how they will react when they have a low rank and things aren't working out.

I think I'm still learning, the last few seasons have taken it more seriously as was largely a more casual player to start with just in a works league. The enjoyment last season and certainly this has been working my way back from a bad rank and a low start which I think can be done by playing sensibly, taking well placed hits and bets against some of the popular moves. I genuinely enjoy the game outside of the main OR as there's always a mini league somewhere which is within reach.

With reference to risk, I certainly take some but more often than not have found they don't come off and that's usually when I don't enjoy the game as much

It's a funny old thing. I still listen to the Scoutcast, still argue with people online about the 'best' option, but I just don't feel I have to take it.

For instance, the best option to bring in between Sigurdsson and Alli is Sigurdsson. I know this because the stats tell me so, and taken over 10,000 similar decisions the man who plays such %'s will always come out on top. But i'm choosing Alli anyway, i'm choosing him because i've learned this year that i don't want my pleasure to be derived from the average of 10,000 decisions.

I guess I became a fantasy football hedonist.

        Good luck with it.

There are many ways to play the game.

But that last word is crucial - its a game, that is meant to be fun.

Some of the talk above about being sad because someone has a low rank is just insane. Fantasy Football is important to us all - but above all it is just a game, nothing more, nothing less.

I can understand it though, I really wanted to do better each season and in chasing a higher rank I kind of lost sight of the difference between achievement and enjoyment. Just as is the case in life real. And I think that's perhaps what Crystal was getting at when he said the person at 10K is guaranteed to be happier than the person at 2m. If your satisfaction is tied to rank instead of pleasure, then you might well apply that assumption to others.

I didn't really intend the post to just be about HITS v NO hits, but more about the overall experience of the game. It's funny and reminds me a little of what's happening in the real game right now (ironically they're probably catching up with fantasy football). The recent drive towards generating and analysing data, towards building a team that's economically efficient, just as you'd expect in any business outside of football. Except in FPL the margins become so narrow because we share the same pool of players

It is probably true that the average player at 10k is happier than the average person at 2m, but it doesn't necessarily follow that every player at 10k is happier than every player at 2m.

It's nice to have a high rank, but that does not mean that the game cannot still be enjoyable if your rank is lower. I always begin the season aiming for my first ever top thousand finish, and it is a bit depressing when I have poor game-weeks and my rank fails to improve - but I soon get over it and can still find enjoyable challenges within the game and continue looking forward to the next game-week.

Yes, many of the teams around 2m may be dead teams (do we know how many dead teams there are at this stage?), so perhaps it would be better to talk about the teams at 1m instead, many of which will still be active ones.

1.8m and yes and no. I rose about 400K one week, then slipped back the same over the last two.

Thing is my best week was when I took a -12 hit. Ones with no hits or just -4 or -8 saw me slide.

Still trying to figure it out.

Bit weekend ahead though with Kane (c)....he will not be well owned or captained around my rank. That's why I'm holding off getting Giroud out for another -4. As with Kane I'm already differential.

Its an interesting one isnt it. Last season was my worst of the last three but giroud hat trick as captain on the last day to get me up to around 20k was one of most enjoyable moments as very few others had done it.

I think thats the key for me the moments you do something that others havent and it works.

If you are top 5k and in defensive mode you wont be doing that

There is no right or wrong way to play the game. Some people are going to have more fun from taking punts and hits whilst others take enjoyment from seeing their rank improve on a weekly basis.

Some base success from where they place in their mini-leagues, other on overall rank, others on making improvements on previous years.

Good on you for finding your way to derive most fun from playing the game. Personally I've always been motivated to try and have a top 1k ranking, which unfortunately I'm a way off currently! But no doubt within the next few years I'll be taking yours and Jonty's approach to mix things up a bit.

Thats just a few points difference though. Could easily bump up to 40k again this week if you nail the captaincy, this week it will be so spread that it's a good chance to catch up.

      It's different for everyone.

I want as high as rank or possible, or more importantly to win as many mini leagues as possible and in turn as much money as possible.

Having a bad rank and/or losing mini leagues isn't fun for me. If I'm doing badly I won't really change the way I play. I take hits when I think they're worth it, with a good or bad rank.

I'm doing badly again this year but I'm not going to change the way I play I don't think. In November I've taken more hits than I have during the previous 2 and a bit months and I've been slowly getting the green arrows. Doesn't mean I'll start taking hits for the sake of it though, I don't really see where the fun comes with that, especially will likely go badly if you're not setting up for the long term.

There are more than one recipe for fun. Taking hits doesn't equal fun neither does the so called "dullard" way of playing. We all have our own standards for fun. Even in real life we tend to find enjoyment doing the things we love in the most suitable way for us.

Branding taking hits as "fun" and not taking hits as "dullard" is narrow-minded and personally wouldn't mind if we got away from that kind of thinking.

I think the fun element to hits is that it feels like you are taking action and doing something to stop the rot. That level of risk taking of removing a player and hoping the new one in does well is the 'fun' bit as it seems more exciting.

Doing nothing is often the correct path, but it just feels boring and feels like as a manager you are not trying to take charge.

Doing nothing may be the best strategy but it doesn't feel very "fun".

There are many occasions when keeping a player might be considered riskier than getting rid. I think you can just as easily find the same fun at keeping faith in a player that delivers while others are getting rid.

I'd even argue that many transfers are just as 'boring' as keeping a player. It's also worth noting that we have 37 transfers and two wildcards during the season so it's not like you can't take charge as a manager without hits.

The fun element comes in the fact that the more risks you take the more likely some are going to pay off its what keeps all gamblers coming back

I'm competitive and 2-4 grand is up for grabs in my various leagues every year, as a student there is no greater buzz when my players do well and I know that might mean I am swimming in money during the summer. Overall rank/mini-league position is my motivation.

I take a hit every week and have done for the past three seasons....and I've no intention of changing. I don't do it because i'm crap at this game and decide to go maverick due to a low rank...I'ts my game plan before the season starts and I announce it as such before a ball has even been kicked. In the summer I even try to drum up a bit of support for a "hit a week league"

It works other way round also
I have a fairly mediocre history, couple of top 20k finishes at best. Protecting ML leads stopped it being in top 10k.
I have always taken hits and got to stage I was finding it boring most years when floating about the 100k plus areas.
I had decided I would try and adopt the ronka style and control my hits and rely on my players I selected for longer. Weirdly there is actually some pleasure in trying to control my instinct to buy buy buy.
Result is I still have average rank
Conclusion I am not that good at this game

Great Hot Topic! I have a few thoughts on this too.

I'm always willing to take the odd point hit as I like the 'rush' of it paying off. In a ML, you see someone make 2 or 3 transfers in a week and you're wondering what they've done (or on the flip side, what on earth they're doing). Clearly, you can't be doing this every week if you wish to be competitive, but there comes a time when the teams that are going through a sticky patch show themselves and you can plan your transfers to take advantage of this.

Regarding the "fun" aspect. I think being original or maverick would rank quite highly in the reward stakes, but the success of this site and community means you have to move very quickly to jump on a player that is flying under the radar. I look around my ML's and they're the core players that FFS recommend. It's the nature of the beast; they all know about FFS and it's now a level playing field.

This year has helped enormously by there being so many valid transfer options. If you have an Alli, a Kane, a Mahrez, a Ramsey, a Bale (etc) at £5m that perform consistently then everyone can afford the big hitters and dropping those players becomes a much greater risk to doing well. For me, not doing well equals less fun regardless of the number of hits.

I've also found distancing myself from the site has helped (sorry Mark and co!) - at least until I've made my weekly transfer, as then I'm satisfied that I made the decision and haven't been herded into the FFS mindset (Aguero out anyone? 😉 ).

This season, I'm doing ok. Back up to 23k after being around 10k earlier in the season. Recent hits are paying off nicely:

      GW13 - Lukaku(1) + Gundogan(0) -> Austin(9) + Firmino(3)
      GW12 - Wilson(2) + Sterling(2) -> Anichebe(13) + Hazard(4)
      GW10 - Zuniga(1) + Rashford(2) -> Holebas(6) + Wilson(1)

Obviously hits can backfire; bringing in Wilson for Mid(a) and Sun(h) for him to pick up an injury didn't go so well.

With Jonty, he's clearly a very good FPL manager with a HoF rank far superior to mine. The site and scoutcast in particular are there to provide entertainment and I think Jonty is playing up to this. The "dullard goes rogue" tag line plays really well with the Scoutcast and I'm sure provides amusement to us all, not just Mark and Granville! I'm not sure how much fun Jonty is having though as he's very competitive. In a way, he now has a bigger challenge than in previous seasons in trying to climb the rankings rather than maintain rank.

You are right of course, being on the Scoutcast has influenced how I've addressed this season. I'm aware that between 10,000 and 20,000 watch or listen each week and accept that all four of us have a duty to inform and entertain as well.

Because I have thousands keeping an eye on my team each week and have a strong track record I'm in a very unique position.

So for example part of me got Giroud in for Aguero for entertainment factor - I also did it because I didn't fancy Aguero v Heaton and Chelsea and thought Giroud would get me some points even from the bench. The being on the Scoutcast element to it though cannot be ignored.

Apart from my fellow Scoutcasters I don't think any Fantasy manager can know how they will react when they have a stinker of a few Gameweeks and have to talk about it in front of thousands of people.

Maybe that's for another hot topic. 😉

Yes, it has been a bit like the Truman Show. The fact that you have an excellent track record and.. how shall I put it.. slight lack of humility 😉 means it has been fun seeing you squirm on the ScoutCast! I don't think anyone thinks any less of your ability as a fantasy manager and by no means is it "sad" or anywhere near as dramatic... It's just how this season has worked out so far.

Please don't go "full maverick"... no-one wants to see that, but by all means take the odd hit for form and fixtures and good luck with the season!

            Cheers.

Sometimes it can be hard to separate the public Fantasy manager from the private one.

Alot of what I say is for show indeed. 🙂

Been quite cathartic responding to some of the points in this hot topic.

I've certainly got a new appreciation for a broader range of Fantasy managers after the first part of this season.

No Costa could be a problem but I already have Kane and Ibra in place which I'm happy with.

I've never done well with Costa and FPL. Ignore him for too long then get him in and he blanks.

Well, for 3-4-3 that's probably the best you could be though as long as Austin starts every game. Just not sure he can though. Plus his away stats are much weaker than his home stats and 3 of the next 4 are away. I'd probably prefer Benteke or Defoe myself.

But Zlatan and Kane, Sanchez and Hazard is the way to go. They are the ideal. In my opinion anyway.

Austin has been good for me and the upcoming fixtures are quite good so I'll be sticking.

Tempted to go with something like this in attack:

                    Sanchez - Hazard - Sigurdsson - Moses/Redmond/Philips/Can/cheap midfielder (Capoue)
                    Ibra - Kane - Austin

Yeah, the squeeze. I get it. It's just a question of where you compromise. Even with no Aguero the budget is stretched.

I think 4-4-2 with Anichebe helps it to slot into place best. But I wouldn't be selling Austin if I had him.

      Here's how I see it...

I think walker is a must so from the other 3:

Evans - never gets BAPS and no attacking threat but likely to get a cleany

Lovren - chance of BAPS and good goal threat. Less likely to keep a cleany

Pieters - small attacking threat and likely to get a cleany

      Hmm??.....

Very good I think. You can play 4-3-3 some weeks, maybe this week if Fer has a hard fixture, or play de Roon? Bit of a benching headache, but your defence is very strong. Maybe going into the Christmas schedule it's better to have a good bench. I guess you're hoping Fer can cover Siggi. Five big hitters in there with Kun, Costa, Haz, and Sachez so you should be set for points

thanks had holebas earlier but ditched for Cedric and it was choice between siggy + Wally (cover for Sanchez)

but in the end decided for Sanchez + fer (cover for siggy and Swansea good fixtures)

the main swing was the captaincy choice of Sanchez and having him most of weeks this season and he did well for me

Defoe is surprising me. All the talk is about getting Costa in for Aguero becuse is scoring is similar for 2.5 mil less. Well Defoe is keeping up with Costa over the last few gameweeks but barely gets a mention. Although he doesn't play for a mid-level team - just a terrible one.

you sacrifice one of Sanchez or Hazard for Walcott or Pedro, and go relatively cheap in defence (6.0, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.1).
If your team value is low, you could also add in someone like Moses / Phillips or maybe Chadli if you can stretch to him as a 4th mid.
