After last week’s selection Wilfried Zaha came good with a 10-point haul in Crystal Palace’s 5-4 defeat to Swansea City, we’re putting our faith in an unheralded Liverpool midfielder, a forgotten man at White Hart Lane and Middlesbrough’s bulldozing centre forward to shine in Gameweek 14.

Emre Can

With Philippe Coutinho having been ruled out for around five weeks with an ankle injury, Fantasy managers have predominantly been looking to the likes of Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and fellow Red Sadio Mane as a replacement.

But should you need to free up funds, in particular for your three-man forward lines, then Coutinho’s Liverpool team-mate Emre Can may just fit the bill.

The German international has netted in two of his last four appearances, and perhaps, more importantly, is starting to look more certain of a place on the teamsheet having started the last six league matches.

Can has seen his price rise this week, having been transferred in by over 10,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses, although he’s still available at a bargain price of 4.9.

The midfielder has posted some impressive underlying statistics over the last four Gameweeks, registering nine shots from inside the box, ranking him joint-third among all midfielders, while he’s also created eight chances over the same period.

Jurgen Klopp’s men travel to take on Bournemouth tomorrow, lining up against a side who conceded twice to Sunderland in their last match at the Vitality Stadium.

With further kind fixtures (WHM, mid, eve, STO) to come over the next five Gameweeks, Can, who’s currently only sat in 1.8% of FPL squads, could be worth considering as an enabler to free up funds elsewhere in our 15-man rosters.

Dele Alli

Tottenham Hotspurs’ Dele Alli is currently being overlooked as Coutinho replacement, although a Gameweek 14 haul could quickly address that.

The England international got back among the attacking points last weekend with an assist in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, and now embarks on three hugely appealing home fixtures (SWA, HUL, BUR) over the next four Gameweeks.

Alli has seen his price drop from an initial 8.5 to 8.1 in FPL, having managed just three goals and two assists so far this term.

But after scoring 10 goals and providing 12 assists last term, he has proven pedigree as an FPL asset, and facing off against three of the weakest defences in the Premier League, could well be worth a roll of the dice for those chasing big deficits in mini-leagues.

Swansea City shipped four goals at home to Crystal Palace last week, while they have conceded seven goals in their last three away matches.

Hull City have also been particularly vulnerable on their travels, conceding 15 goals in their last four away trips, while Burnley are equally fragile away from home, having conceded at least three goals in four of their five away matches.

Alli is currently owned by just 4.8% of FPL managers, and given he’s a name few seem to considering as a Coutinho replacement, there’s no doubt that a return to form for the Spurs midfielder would provide instant dividends for those wiling to take the gamble.

Alvaro Negredo

After registering his first goals since his debut on the opening day with a brace against Leicester City last weekend, and with a plum home fixture against Hull City on Monday night, Middlesbrough’s Alvaro Negredo looks a solid option for Gameweek 14.

Priced at 6.3, the Spanish striker also has some reasonable underlying statistics from the past four Gameweeks, registering seven shots from inside the box, with five of those hitting the target.

Hull travel to the Riverside having conceded three goals to Sunderland on their last visit to the north-east – a match where both Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe mustered double-digit scores.

The former Man City forward has seen his ownership rise back up to 13.2% in FPL on the back of over 55,000 transfers in this week, but with the Spaniard likely to be found in many unmanned “ghostship teams,” he should still be able to provide a boost in rank if he delivers on Monday night.

‘Boro also face favourable match-ups against Swansea and Burnley later this month, so for those who are looking for an alternative from the likes of Defoe and Southampton’s Charlie Austin as a cheaper third forward option, Negredo may prove an interesting route to follow.

Would you be happy playing two from Allen, Capoue & Anichebe until winter WC?

    Would allow:

    Vertonghen - Alonso - McAuley
    Sanchez - Hazard - Siggy
    Aguero - Costa

Allen or Capoue could be replaced by Snodgrass?

Difficult to say. If Allen is certain to play that advanced role I would've said yes, it's worth it. But yes, I prefer Snoddy over both of them. I think Sunderland's fixtures get tricky so don't trust Anichubby either.

  9. Jazzmattazz
    • 14 Years

Play Allen or Mane? I'm leaning towards Allen. All Mane's have practically come at home and I'm thinking that Allen will be back in his more advanced role. Thoughts?

    2. A Defender's Nightmare

If you're not playing Mane against Bournemouth you should really sell him. In all seriousness Mane over Allen every day of the week.

      1. Jazzmattazz
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

I won't sell him as I think he'll end up being Liverpool best mid at the end of the season. But the facts don't lie he does all his scoring at home. He's only scored away points v Arsenal the first game of the season. So no, it isn't all day mate.

        1. A Defender's Nightmare
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 8 months ago

C'mon! You're looking for a reason to start Allen over Mane! At the end of the day anything might happen in football & Allen may actually outscore Mane this GW. But there's no way I would start Allen over Mane.

          1. A Defender's Nightmare
            • 13 Years
            9 years, 8 months ago

And I don't think you should give too much importance to his home/away form. Everyone knows Mane is inconsistent, you knew the risk when you bought him. You simply can't predict his haul. Although Bournemouth have defended better than we expected this season they still aren't a defensively set up team. Bookies predict it will be an open game with goals from both sides so I would go with them.

            1. Jazzmattazz
              • 14 Years
              9 years, 8 months ago

The reason why everyone jumped on Allen was because he was doing the business in that role. By all accounts he'll be back in that position today against a side which are poor away. So imo he's worthy of consideration for this GW over Mane who's away form is poor. Perhaps you play the game differently but I do try and predict hauls that's what aids player selection. You first point is remarkable! Surely as FF player you look for those advantages. In a game of template sides looking at a player, form, fixture and making a selection is what it's all about. What pick Mane cos its Mane? Na mate I'm a bit more considered.

That was part of my point but not all. As much as Mane (or Firmino) might benefit from Coutinho's absence they may suffer as well. Stoke has a good fixture and Allen is central to their attack. It's not a slam dunk, and in my experience for most it's generally hard to get past the price differential.

    Repost on new article. 🙂

    @ Cedric owners/buyers

Aren't you worried that he is almost certain to be rested on Dec 31st against West Brom & possibly next weekend against Boro or against Stoke? I'm asking this based on Puel's treatment on him as he never seemed to start a midweek game this season. Puel likes rotating (already tried to justify it saying they are consistent because of rotation) & it's not like he doesn't like Martina either.

The thing is there's not many weeks for it! Like you said much can change between now & then which means must avoid buying a player who is very highly likely to get rotated over this period. One or two injuries you might be in serious trouble.

Just cause he's rested for midweek Europa doesn't necessarily mean he'll be rested for midweek PL.

If you think he's that nailed then why doesn't he start Europa games like VVD?! It's because he is fragile & the manager thinks Martina is an able deputy.

Nobody scared that Kane might me rotated in one of those juicy home fixtures or played deeper with Janssen leading the line? The last factor that is keeping me from buying him atm.

      • 10 Years

They're out of the CL, can't see it personally. Might play deeper if Janssen gets a game, but he might not get one...and could still score nonetheless.

Thoughts on my team this week?

    GK - Pickford
DEF - Vertonghen, McAuley, Cedric, Pieters
    MID - Hazard, Sanchez, Firmino
    ATT - Costa, Kane, Austin

Bench - Heaton, Capoue, Clayton, Kingsley

Used my wild card this week so I can make changes

Cool. You need at least 4 good mids, Clayton needs to be upgraded. Maybe Capoue as well.

          Hazard > Pedro | Clayton > Lallana | Capoue > Fer

Kingsley > a cheap defender that plays (for the Christmas rotation).

Maybe Firmino out for Lallana and Pedro or Sig in for Capoue? Really like Firmino though and think he'll destroy these next few fixtures
