For a moment, we were beginning to believe it would never happen.

But Jonathan Moss had other ideas, perhaps, like me, he had been silly enough to overlook Diego Costa in his Fantasy Premier League squad.

We can’t claim that the Chelsea striker’s fifth yellow card and resultant one-match ban sent shockwaves through the Fantasy Football community – we were already in the brace position.

However, having navigated 11 domestic matches without an indiscretion, it looked as though Costa v2 was capable of making the Gameweek 19 curfew.

Now we have to consider our options.

The impact of the suspension is perhaps amplified by the fixture involved; the Boxing Day meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was potentially a platform for Costa to produce a big haul.

Then again, there was always the possibility that Antonio Conte would preserve the striker, if not in Gameweek 18, more likely for the visit of Stoke City that followed.

The Blues travel to Spurs in Gameweek 20 and, perched on the suspension tightrope; it would have been prudent for Conte to keep Costa out of the Potters clash and protected.

That’s perhaps a philosophical perspective on the current scenario – speculation to soften the blow.

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a say in all this – he is now at the forefront of the Costa fall-out.

The Swede’s brace of goals at The Hawthorns has elevated his status and taken him to an impressive 54 points over his last six Gameweeks.

Even Costa, with his unerring consistency, pales in comparison, returning 42 over his last six starts.

The United striker had already built a case prior to his latest goals; he soared to the top of the “transfers in” column within an hour of Costa’s booking.

Clearly, with United facing Sunderland, Middlesbrough and West Ham before the FA Cup break and Jose Mourinho playing down fears the striker will be rested, Ibrahimovic appears poised to maintain his current output.

But for those who adopted Costa early, maximising his price increase, the decision is far from straightforward.

To move to Ibrahimovic now could force them to stick by the United striker beyond Costa’s return in Gameweek 19, should funds limit their option.

Arguably, Ibrahimovic deserves our faith, even if it does mean shedding Costa.

But benching the Chelsea man also has to be an option.

For many, that tactic will depend on the strength of their existing reserves or if they are willing to part with four points to strengthen in order to absorb Costa’s loss.

Certainly, with Ibrahimovic in the mood, the Old Trafford meeting with Sunderland looks a daunting prospect for his non-owners.

Similarly, should Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku deliver double-figures in their Gameweek 17 matches, they will doubtless attract some Costa traffic.

Kane visits Southampton while Costa sits in the stands, perhaps an unlikely venue for the Spurs striker to return heavily.

But Lukaku makes a trip to Leicester City who will be without both Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth in their already suspect defence. Surprisingly, the Everton striker is already fourth for transfers in before kicking a ball in Gameweek 17.

Costa has shed 50,000 owners at the time of writing. Clearly, an exodus of sorts is under way, presumably made up of those who can either avoid a big loss of funds or who are willing to suck it up, driven by the appeal of the Ibrahimovic form.

It will be interesting to see just how much of his 52% ownership will be lost and just how quickly Ibrahimovic can climb in the nine days until the next deadline.

But there is perhaps an added twist.

When you consider that Sergio Aguero’s return coincides with Costa’s in Gameweek 19, the option of climbing the Ibrahimovic rises as a means of earning precious extra funds offers an intriguing possibility.

Costa to Ibrahimovic and then to Aguero is just one potential route on the crossroads created by today’s events.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

People who own Kane + Costa

    A) Kane -> Ibra. Bench Costa
    B) Costa -> Ibra
    C) Costa -> Ibra then Kane -> Costa next week

    I bought Costa at 10.6
    Which is best?

If I could afford B I'd do it now. Need to do it in 2 moves so I've a conundrum- as detailed below.

Can't do B without hits, so just going A.

A also means you don't have to use a transfer getting Costa back in again.

I'm doing C. Sold Costa for 10.8, he's likely to drop so may be able to buy him back for that depending if he drops once or twice.

Posted last night the plan was going to be Collins, Kane > Amat, Zlatan tonight...but Costa's suspension has killed that move...
    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/12/16/the-community-round-up-174/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_14669877

    Heaton (MID)
Walker (sou) Alonso (BOU) Smith (che)
Sigurdsson (WHU) Mane (STK) Sanchez (WBA) Eriksen (sou) de Roon (bur)
    Origi (STK) Kane (sou)

Pickford (mun) Collins (swa) Pieters (liv) Costa*

    1. Do Collins, Costa > 3.9, Ibra tonight (exact cash)
Or wait, miss Ibra rise (possible Costa drop?)
    2. Eriksen, Costa > Walcott, Ibra
    3. Walker, Costa > Valencia, Ibra
    4. Mane, Costa > Lallana/Walcott, Ibra

Not overly loving 1. Getting Amat in would at least have provided another benching option...
2 quite like this in one sense. Not sure eriksen will sustain form, and Walcott has some juicy fixtures. Should at least keep up with eriksen output providing he plays.
    3. Walker to Valencia seems good short term, but I started out with walker planning to keep him for the season. Kinda rather keep him than either eriksen or Kane in a way...
    4. Mane's going to have to go at some point...just not sure it's this week I want to shift.

    PLEASE help me decide!!! Thanks!!!!

would love to get this question on this weeks scoutcast and thoughts welcome here as well.

im assuming many managers have a similar conundrum as my team is pretty template and i know it has been discussed on the scoutcast briefly, it seems like the choices/tradeoffs in players currently lie in either the high price brackets (ibra vs costa vs kane vs aguero vs lukaku and hazard vs sanchez vs kdb vs firmino vs mane vs eriksen). obviously we cant have all of these players and each manager has made a selection of a few - I have 5 and if you want a decent defense with minimum 1 heavy hitter and if you have good TV your remaining two at best are in the 7-7.5 range ( i have good TV and i have alonso cedric jones at the back allowing me to have siggurdson and lallana).

not liking the look of siggurdson eating 7.4 in the worst team in the league but cannot think of like for like replacement. This opens up the discussion for changing formation, ie siggurdson to toby and play 4-4-2 or siggurdson to defoe for 3-4-3, or even 4-3-3 is a possibility. Wondering if others have similar thoughts. i know 4 at the back is not really in style but it wouldnt be crazy to see bellerin/toby/rose/walker outscoring siggurdson/defoe/carrol/ or any similar priced attackers.

I'm on 4-3-3 and it's been serving me well.

      Cech - Pickford
      Alonso - Valencia - Brunt - Cedric - Francis
      Sanchez - Hazard - Sigurdsson - Traore - Kightly
      Ibrahimovic - Costa - Carroll

What I would say however is that had I had a Foster/Heaton instead of Cech (how I wish this was the case) I'd definitely use the cash to upgrade Traore to Phillips/Zaha/Snodgrass, so I suppose I've been playing 4-3-3 out of necessity, but as long as you've got defenders with a reasonable attacking threat it's fine. I wouldn't be happy doing 4-3-3 with Evans, Jones and Cahill for example.

Personally I think I'll be sticking with 4-3-3 until I can get rid of Cech for free or really justify a hit. This week I'm looking at doing Francis to Lowton and keeping Costa on the bench, so I'll be going into boxing day with a 5-3-2

If anyone wants to get Aguero back next week fresh from suspension and raring to prove a point with his usual goal spree, then I'd wait until midweek to buy Ibra or transfer out Costa.

Best route to get Ibra in?

    A. Costa, Eriksen and Kane OUT -> Ibra, Hazard and Benteke IN (-8)
    B. Costa, Antonio and Kane OUT -> Ibra, Hazard and Deeney/Origi/Llorente IN (-8)
    C. Costa and Eriksen OUT -> Ibra and Walcott/Lallana/Alli IN (-4)
    D. Costa and Antonio OUT -> Ibra and Noble/Chadli/Phillips/Redmond IN (-4)

A and B gives me Hazard as an Chelsea cover but with an added hit. C and D leave me with no Chelsea cover.

not if you're late to the Costa party. What else would you do this week?

Meant to make a decision on Kane. If he plays well then i won't want to sell him.

No transfers til end of gw anyway.

Current backline is Amat Pieters Cedric Williams Francis and it needs urgent work.

    a) Williams -> Azpi (or Cedric ->Azpi if he is benched)
    b) a plus Pieters -> Jones (-4)
    c) a plus Pieters -> Valencia (-4)

    Heaton
    Alonso, Brunt, Holebas
    Sanchez, Hazard, Sigurdsson, Snodgrass
    Kane, Costa, Defoe

Would you do this for 2 FTs:

    Kane ➡ Ibra
    Sigurdsson ➡ Eriksen

Definitely, though Eriksen may find it difficult to get much at Southampton (A)

Not sure Cedric will ever be nailed. If Martina starts tomorrow with Cedric on bench I will be worried.
