For a moment, we were beginning to believe it would never happen.

But Jonathan Moss had other ideas, perhaps, like me, he had been silly enough to overlook Diego Costa in his Fantasy Premier League squad.

We can’t claim that the Chelsea striker’s fifth yellow card and resultant one-match ban sent shockwaves through the Fantasy Football community – we were already in the brace position.

However, having navigated 11 domestic matches without an indiscretion, it looked as though Costa v2 was capable of making the Gameweek 19 curfew.

Now we have to consider our options.

The impact of the suspension is perhaps amplified by the fixture involved; the Boxing Day meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was potentially a platform for Costa to produce a big haul.

Then again, there was always the possibility that Antonio Conte would preserve the striker, if not in Gameweek 18, more likely for the visit of Stoke City that followed.

The Blues travel to Spurs in Gameweek 20 and, perched on the suspension tightrope; it would have been prudent for Conte to keep Costa out of the Potters clash and protected.

That’s perhaps a philosophical perspective on the current scenario – speculation to soften the blow.

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a say in all this – he is now at the forefront of the Costa fall-out.

The Swede’s brace of goals at The Hawthorns has elevated his status and taken him to an impressive 54 points over his last six Gameweeks.

Even Costa, with his unerring consistency, pales in comparison, returning 42 over his last six starts.

The United striker had already built a case prior to his latest goals; he soared to the top of the “transfers in” column within an hour of Costa’s booking.

Clearly, with United facing Sunderland, Middlesbrough and West Ham before the FA Cup break and Jose Mourinho playing down fears the striker will be rested, Ibrahimovic appears poised to maintain his current output.

But for those who adopted Costa early, maximising his price increase, the decision is far from straightforward.

To move to Ibrahimovic now could force them to stick by the United striker beyond Costa’s return in Gameweek 19, should funds limit their option.

Arguably, Ibrahimovic deserves our faith, even if it does mean shedding Costa.

But benching the Chelsea man also has to be an option.

For many, that tactic will depend on the strength of their existing reserves or if they are willing to part with four points to strengthen in order to absorb Costa’s loss.

Certainly, with Ibrahimovic in the mood, the Old Trafford meeting with Sunderland looks a daunting prospect for his non-owners.

Similarly, should Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku deliver double-figures in their Gameweek 17 matches, they will doubtless attract some Costa traffic.

Kane visits Southampton while Costa sits in the stands, perhaps an unlikely venue for the Spurs striker to return heavily.

But Lukaku makes a trip to Leicester City who will be without both Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth in their already suspect defence. Surprisingly, the Everton striker is already fourth for transfers in before kicking a ball in Gameweek 17.

Costa has shed 50,000 owners at the time of writing. Clearly, an exodus of sorts is under way, presumably made up of those who can either avoid a big loss of funds or who are willing to suck it up, driven by the appeal of the Ibrahimovic form.

It will be interesting to see just how much of his 52% ownership will be lost and just how quickly Ibrahimovic can climb in the nine days until the next deadline.

But there is perhaps an added twist.

When you consider that Sergio Aguero’s return coincides with Costa’s in Gameweek 19, the option of climbing the Ibrahimovic rises as a means of earning precious extra funds offers an intriguing possibility.

Costa to Ibrahimovic and then to Aguero is just one potential route on the crossroads created by today’s events.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Azpi, Walcott, Ozil and one of Jones/Valencia. Would love to have them in my team. Will probaly be none or just an ARS mid.

      thoughts on this mess:

      Picky, Jaku
      Alonso, Holebas, Jones, Smith, Williams
Allen, Eriksen, Haz, Sanchez, De Roon
      Ibra, Kane, Origi?

So I've just done Kane to Ibra for free. Couldn't sell Costa as I got him in for 9.6m. However I still have Nacho so I'm hoping he plays against Hull. I also have an average defense for gw18.

      Rudolph
      Alonso, Cedric, Holebas
      Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Siggy, Phillips
      Ibra, Nacho

      Foster, Amat, Pieters, Costa

Defense - Cedric home v Spurs could go bad.
Midfield - Phillips has to play v Arsenal away won't get much
Attack - Nacho may not even play & probably a bench appearance

Which option do you like (any hit will be done last minute):
      (a) Cedric out - Jones in for -4 hit or
      (b) Nacho out - Origi in for -4 hit or
      (c) Don't take a hit & play as is

      Thought & thanks.

Yes, but I also just brought in Jones this GW, so don't really see the relevance. I brought Cedric in two game weeks ago, so not very fond of him atm!

I just think Cedric could be good value at 4.9m/5.0m. Plays for a good defensive team, gets into some attacking positions occasionally + not a stranger to baps.

              Cedric's fixtures:

              17 Bournemouth (A) 2
              18 Spurs (H) 4
              19 West Brom (H) 2
              20 Everton (A) 3
              21 Burnley (A) 2
              22 Leicester (H) 2
              23 Swansea (A) 2
              24 West Ham (H) 2
              25 Sunderland (A) 2
              26 Arsenal (H) 4
              27 Watford (A) 2

Playing them all is the tricky part... Alonso, Walker, Valencia/Jones, Brunt... and that's not considering double Chelsea D. Cedric is a 3rd defender in my eyes (where as VVD is a no. 2 spot), and it's nice to rotate the 3rd defender.

It depends on expectations. There's people talking about selling Sight. Fine, do it if you think Swansea are a sunken ship, but he's not going to score every game... He might go 2 or 3 before another haul.

Hazard is the one people don't seem to be talking about, yet he's blanked for 4 games I think now.

            Walcott has been very consistent.

Well he'd probably drop back to around erm, 10.4 with a 3 ban? So erm, yeah I'd have dumped, got the 10.3 net and bought back.

3-match ban could easily be 0.6-0.9 loss in value. That way most people would be able to buy him in at the price they sold him at whilst also getting points from elsewhere.
In the current situation, it's more difficult to sell him and get him back for the early buyers.
I bought Costa reluctantly at 10.6, sold for 10.8 and will probably be able to buy him at the same price (IF I want him).

Did the same. Have Costa in about same value, maybe 9.8.

Surely those that bought him for < £10m have a decent 4th defender or 5th mid they can play for one game??!

Exactly, anyway he'd have probably been rested for STO anyway to avoid missing tot so it's no big deal.

Yep, it's not like it's been a sudden unexpected suspension. We've had weeks to plan for this.

Will be interesting to see how much he falls this week.

I'd guess the full 0.3 and then next week should be a lot buying back plus those who didn't have him might be tempted @10.7.

I did the same as I got Costa @9.6m. Means I have to play Phillips v Arsenal away but he went okay against Chelsea so he might surprise.

Best option mates? It would all be for -4 and I am pretty ready to do it.

        A) Pieters to Baines
        B) Pieters to Jones (but is he nailed on when Bailly is back?)
        C) Pieters to Holebas
        D) Pieters to Barragan/Chambers
        E) Pieters to Gabriel (short term pick, for 2-3 gws)
        F) Foster to DDG
        G) Foster to Valdes
        H) Do nothing and play Foster (ars) or Pickford (mun) and Amat (WHU)

          H
Those goalies should be getting some save points. Amat not the worst option.

Watching Swansea from GW to GW it looks one of the worst possible options, mate 😀

And what about Baines? He would be long term pick, he is on pens and some set pieces, have right enough money for him.

Gabriel and Jones have better fixtures, but they aren't nailed on.

Holebas good attacking potential in bad defence and Barragan/Chambers looks solid enough.

        So many strategies opening up,

Sanchez and Ozil double up, chasing Swansea, clean sheets becoming a bit more predictable,
Rondon and Tekkers with great fixtures from the new year and Aguero/Coutinho returning...Crikey...

Whats your thoughts on the following, assuming no injuries

GW18- Costa to Benteke (bought Costa at 10.8)
GW19- Payet to Sanchez, Kane to Costa
          GW20- Sigurdsson to Coutinho

          Random!

          BEST 4.8 defender?

          a) Jones
          b) Holebas
          c) Ake
          d) Gibson
          e) Other

am benching Costa this week and don't want to be playing Amat (WHU) AND Pieters (liv) so I'm going to upgrade my 3.9 to one of those.

          Thanks!

I really should've got Origi last minute instead of Carroll. I watched both highlights and Origi passed eye ball test more. Just thought Carroll would go nuts against Hull

Was a logical punt to be honest. I had Antonio who just about came off by being fouled for their pen. But West Ham definitely not a team to be placing much trust in lol
