For a moment, we were beginning to believe it would never happen.

But Jonathan Moss had other ideas, perhaps, like me, he had been silly enough to overlook Diego Costa in his Fantasy Premier League squad.

We can’t claim that the Chelsea striker’s fifth yellow card and resultant one-match ban sent shockwaves through the Fantasy Football community – we were already in the brace position.

However, having navigated 11 domestic matches without an indiscretion, it looked as though Costa v2 was capable of making the Gameweek 19 curfew.

Now we have to consider our options.

The impact of the suspension is perhaps amplified by the fixture involved; the Boxing Day meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was potentially a platform for Costa to produce a big haul.

Then again, there was always the possibility that Antonio Conte would preserve the striker, if not in Gameweek 18, more likely for the visit of Stoke City that followed.

The Blues travel to Spurs in Gameweek 20 and, perched on the suspension tightrope; it would have been prudent for Conte to keep Costa out of the Potters clash and protected.

That’s perhaps a philosophical perspective on the current scenario – speculation to soften the blow.

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a say in all this – he is now at the forefront of the Costa fall-out.

The Swede’s brace of goals at The Hawthorns has elevated his status and taken him to an impressive 54 points over his last six Gameweeks.

Even Costa, with his unerring consistency, pales in comparison, returning 42 over his last six starts.

The United striker had already built a case prior to his latest goals; he soared to the top of the “transfers in” column within an hour of Costa’s booking.

Clearly, with United facing Sunderland, Middlesbrough and West Ham before the FA Cup break and Jose Mourinho playing down fears the striker will be rested, Ibrahimovic appears poised to maintain his current output.

But for those who adopted Costa early, maximising his price increase, the decision is far from straightforward.

To move to Ibrahimovic now could force them to stick by the United striker beyond Costa’s return in Gameweek 19, should funds limit their option.

Arguably, Ibrahimovic deserves our faith, even if it does mean shedding Costa.

But benching the Chelsea man also has to be an option.

For many, that tactic will depend on the strength of their existing reserves or if they are willing to part with four points to strengthen in order to absorb Costa’s loss.

Certainly, with Ibrahimovic in the mood, the Old Trafford meeting with Sunderland looks a daunting prospect for his non-owners.

Similarly, should Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku deliver double-figures in their Gameweek 17 matches, they will doubtless attract some Costa traffic.

Kane visits Southampton while Costa sits in the stands, perhaps an unlikely venue for the Spurs striker to return heavily.

But Lukaku makes a trip to Leicester City who will be without both Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth in their already suspect defence. Surprisingly, the Everton striker is already fourth for transfers in before kicking a ball in Gameweek 17.

Costa has shed 50,000 owners at the time of writing. Clearly, an exodus of sorts is under way, presumably made up of those who can either avoid a big loss of funds or who are willing to suck it up, driven by the appeal of the Ibrahimovic form.

It will be interesting to see just how much of his 52% ownership will be lost and just how quickly Ibrahimovic can climb in the nine days until the next deadline.

But there is perhaps an added twist.

When you consider that Sergio Aguero’s return coincides with Costa’s in Gameweek 19, the option of climbing the Ibrahimovic rises as a means of earning precious extra funds offers an intriguing possibility.

Costa to Ibrahimovic and then to Aguero is just one potential route on the crossroads created by today’s events.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Got him at 4.7, can revert him to a a 4th def is he loses his place to smalling, but at the minute he's doing great. Bailly going to ACON so removes some competition. United are on track to win 5 league games in 20 days if they can beat sunderland & boro at home, an amazing turanound in form.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Four strikers of the Apocalypse.

The four in question are Costa, Ibrahimovic, Aguero and Kane. All hugely expensive, all capable of big hauls and in all cases have excelled in recent matches.

But with Costa’s one game ban in mind, Aguero’s return in GWK 19, Ibrahimovic’s kind fixture run and Kane on Dembele-less probation, which two are the best to own over Christmas.

Recent Costa owners even have the prospect of owning all four at various times with the Spaniard’s impending price drop and Ibrahimovic’s rise meaning a profit can even be made by drafting in the big Swede temporarily and then going back to the Chelsea man.

Or indeed a three to four gwk move for those with no other pressing concerns or a spare transfer is a possibility –of Costa to Ibra, Kane to Costa, Ibra to Aguero.

Whatever you decide will be down to your personal tastes, team finances and how much you value one of the sides in the form and fixture debate.

To help out I thought I’d have a quick look at form and fixtures of each.

Ibrahimovic (11.3). Two further price rises this week likely
Form - 7 goals and 2 assists in last six starts
Underlying Stats – 5 SoT last four matches
Christmas Fixtures - SUN, MID, whu

Costa (11.0) - Two/three price falls likely this week
Form – 4 goals, 2 assists in last six starts
Underlying stats – 4 SoT in last four matches
Christmas Fixtures – SUSPENDED, STK, tott

Kane (11.3) price fall/rise dependent on performance today
Form – 5 goals last six starts
Underlying stats – 7 SoT in last four matches
Christmas Fixtures – sou, wat, CHE

Aguero (12.8) another price fall a possibility before GWK 19
Form – 5 goals and 1 assist in last six starts
Underlying stats – 10 SoT in last four matches
Christmas Fixtures – SUSPENDED, iv, BUR

I’ll leave these stats here to draw your own conclusions but factoring in that Aguero has Burnley in GWK 20 I think Ibrahimovic looks the best bet for Christmas, then Aguero could be the best for the New Year.

Which of these four premium options will be in your team over the festive fixture run?

My thinking too. I have a spare transfer too even after making the Costa to Ibra switch. Had the exact ££ so would have been rude not to make that move last night. 🙂

Aguero GWK 20 looks good too...but that's a long way off and anything can happen before then.

I may not have made the Costa to Ibra switch without that spare transfer.

I can see why Villa Ronka saves them now - really gives so much more flexibility.

Did Ibra to Costa last night. Kane to Costa next gameweek.

I'm not sure about Aguero, I had Aguero, Lukaku, Sanchez, Hazard, Mane and Coutinho till Aguero's suspension. This helped me climbing the ranking. Now using Aguero's money to upgrade Lukaku and obtain Alonso, I am not sure Aguero is worth disturbing my team balance anymore.

I think it is more important to have cash in the bank to obtain the right players in the right time. Like Benteke in GW20 for example

Fair enough. I'm reluctant to ditch Hazard as I think over the course of the season only two or three players will score higher than him at the most. He does need to buck his idea up though.

I'm going Kane + Ibra. Got them in a few weeks back and it's worked wonderfully for me. Whether I get Aguero in or not depends on two things for me. First, the form of the two guys I have going into new year and second, whether I decide to upgrade/downgrade Siggy after his tasty fixture run. Also, third striker is Benteke who has some good form and great fixtures coming up.

No indeed. Unless they don't want him back.

I got for 10.6, sold for 10.8 and will be able to buy back for that price or 10.7 if I wanted.

Those that got him for 9.5 will have to sell at 10.2 and pay 0.5 more to get him back. Makes no sense to sell.

As he's part of the "4 Strikers of the Festive Apocalypse" why would you reduce your options to not bring him back to gain .5 to invest else where ?
I understand your rationale but do not agree with people making that choice as the risk is very high for very small return

I wasn't really favouring one way or the other just putting out the facts. I do think it is viable to sell Costa if you don't want him back soon. 0.5m could be a big return anyway, Valencia vs sub 5m defs for example....and if for whatever reason you do end up getting Costa back, losing 0.5m is not ideal but not the end of the world either.

Why do people think if you bought Costa cheap you can't buy him back? I sold for 10.5m made .5m profit off him. Make at least .1m off Ibra so if I want Costa back it'll only cost an extra .2m most likely.

Even if you bought him at 9.5m, you can still get him back, how did every else afford 11m for him if your saying he's too valuable to sell for 10.2/10.3m.

Because people (including me) have had to downgrade at other area of the field.
Pedro instead of Hazard for example.
Just to afford Costa at his current price.

But if you've had him from when he was 9.5 you stand to lose a lot more if you want Costa back after his ban.
As let's say you have 0 ITB with Costa.
You sell him now. But you want him back the week after.
When you attempt to buy him back. He costs 0.5 more due to how price changes works. Meaning you'd have to downgrade your teams to get him back

Makes no sense for me to sell. And waste a FT to get him back.

        I brought him at 10.6
I stand to gain 0.2 if I sell now.

        Let's say he drops 2 or 3
I'd have to buy him back at 10.7 or 10.8.
I've made neither a profit or loss. But wasted two FT's selling and getting him back again

Your point makes total sense but I think you may be forgetting about FPL points in this equation-it's possible that Ibra could score 20 points more than Costa in the next two, and with rotation imminent you may not always have 11 out over the festive season.

'Potential' points over transfers/value for me Huth.

I have Ibra in now over Kane.

So for me in this instance. It makes sense to keep Costa and save two FT's. I'd expect plenty others to be in same boat as me.

        Great article, Jonty
After reading your article, I found it interesting to see how my team with look like going with 3 premium striker.

I took a quick look at a structure and I think it could be relevant for other people for inspiration.

I am really be tempted to do the restructuring of my team and go über cheap in defence, budget midfield and get 3 premium strikers.
My TV value is really low (103.4m), so it is hard for me to do properly.
Just to show my thoughts, this is the quick draft of a team I can get with my poor TV based on fewest transfers(6):

        Heaton Pickford
        £4.7m £4.1m

        Cédric McAuley Holebas Friend Ake
        £5.0m £4.8m £4.7m £4.4m £4.4m

Sánchez Coutinho Phillips Allen De Roon
        £11.5m £8.2m £5,5m £5.0m £4.3m

        Agüero Costa Ibrahimovic
        £12.8m 11.0m £11.2m

This would take me 6 transfers (2 FTs now) and I would be able to do this over a few weeks with some spare cash (whatever Costa, Coutinho and Aguero falls over the next few weeks so probably 0.3m-0.5m). The spare cash could be used to either upgrade a position somewhere or shave off a transfer used.
For people with a TV a bit higher than mine, would be able to upgrade either in defence or upgrade one of the mids.

Of course the above team is just a quick draft for me to show the structure. Even though I don't fully buy into attacking cover it is worth noting that you have the (at least one of the) key man from each of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool - or 5 top teams, whichever strikers you choose to go with. Going with Kane over Aguero obviously gives extra cash.
You have to choose which premium options you go with and even though I don't like loosing Hazard, I think the above draft could work - at least as a suggestion I can continue to work on.

What do you say? You think such a restructuring would have any merit or would 3 premium strikers only be relevant for people with higher TVs or willing to go Agueroless?

Any input would be much appreciated 🙂

I'm tinkering as we speak lizzy,
I think shipping Hazzard may be the key and I have a good tv so I can do

          Foster/PickF
          4.5(5)
          Sanchez/Cout/Erik/Siggy/4.5
          Costa/Ibra/Kane

          OR

          Foster/PickF
          4.5(5)
          Sanchez/Cout/Erik/Allen/4.5
          Costa/Ibra/Aguero

So yea I'm definatley looking at one of these options but if I commit I need to be very careful with my next few moves.

            Cheers, HVT.
Very interesting to see people's opinion and how a team with a higher TV than mine can look like.

Personally I like the second option. Yes you would have to go without Hazard and Siggy, who are both important, but with that team I think it has a real chance of being worth it.

That the thing isn't it? You really have to make a decision and plan your transfers very carefully. I won't be able to do it without a hit a two either way, but would have to be aware of every transfer to minimize hits taken.

That team looked so great but you know how it is.. Essential players for one week could be ice cold just a few weeks later. We have seen it so many times, This season with Lukaku, Firmino, Hazard among others. Don't look too far ahead is my advise.. 😉

Of course you are right and I am not throwing around the "essential" label 🙂
But I don't think it is outrageous to assume that most if not all of the "big 5" will do well over the span of the season. Whether they are worth the money and whether it is worth downgrading in other positions is the key question imo. Hazard is still the second highest scoring defender to be fair and I at least always had my concerns about Firmino without Coutinho in the team. Trollkaku will always be Trollkaku 😉

At the same time.. You want to change your team so you have your absolute favourite line-up. I like that! But at the same time you always have to change your team from how it looks at the moment. I would really like to have Ibra, Kane and Kun but since gw7 I downgraded to just one expensive forward. From there I got stuck with this line-up and will take massive hits to taylor my team to a three forward team. If you have had a team-link I would have followed your line-up change.. 😉

Yeah you can definitely tinker your way to some interesting looking teams in 2-3 gameweeks...
With my TV, I unfortunately can't fit in Hazard if I am going with Aguero, Ibra and Costa. Are you ignoring the Liverpool mids for now?

Mmm tinkering as we speak... countinho is one to watch... but fixtures are amazing wen he's back and will he be 100% after injury. Wait and see I think.

I'm currently stubborn on haz over Sanchez... but seems Chelsea aren't free scoring atm... I think maybe double Chelsea Def and either haz or costa not both.... then could get Sanchez or coutinho in on the budget

Definitely worried about Coutinho's minutes and fixtures when he is back. My plan (if I do the above mentioned), would be to keep Siggy + the cash needed for Cout and get in Cout when/if he started to perform again
I would be looking to get Sanchez in if I were you. Very hard to ignore. Great form, great fixtures, OOP.

Yeah that was my starting point as well this season with Aguero, Zlatan and Lukaku. But now if you want Costa over Lukaku it get's a bit tough -especially now when most people have chosen a cheaper options as a third striker (Benteke, Origi etc.).

where I have trouble with it is just emptying the rest of the side of funds.
If you've got Ibra & Kun (most probably captaining one of them) is Costa (rarely a captain) 5m better option than a Chelsea defender? You could even take 2 Chelsea defenders & Defoe over Costa, 2 of Holebas/McAuley/Friend.

Valid point - especially if Chelsea looks to tweak their tactics a bit.
I just think there could be a point in having a solid core of the big hitters for the season and then spending your FTs switching up your cheap def and mids for good short-mid term run of fixtures. If the Chelsea defence could keep returning CSs in 1-0 wins, they are of course better value than Costa.

I did Costa > Ibra last night and I think if anything Kane may make way for Costa.
        I've also come up with a plan to get;
Ibra/Costa/Kane into one team, Kane could be Aguero too if I went down to Snoddy/Philips as a 4th mid but right now I think the right move was Costa to Ibra but that was easy for me as I was late to the Diego party.

        Pickford Jakupovic
        4.5 x 5
        Sanchez Walcott Zaha Snodgrass 4.2
        Aguero Ibrahimovic Costa

Rubbish defence but I wouldn't be short of captaincy options... You could even make it 4-3-3 by swapping a 4.5 defender and Zaha for Luiz and De Roon.

Looking at a similar draft, although I think I am keeping Siggy for the next 3 with the cash to turn him into Coutinho.
With the core of those 4-5 you can spend you FTs getting in budget def and mids with short term runs of good fixtures. Really think it can pay of, although not having a Chelsea/Spurs/Ars defender can you you.

Out of Kane, Ibra, Costa, Aguero and Sanchez (OoP forward). Sanchez and Costa offer the most value, in terms of consistency and Sanchez goals/performances worth more points/BAPS.

Then the way my team is set up, its a case of picking another 1 out of the remaining pool and at this moment in time Ibra is one I'm going for. Of course its a fluid situation, but finally Ibra is getting the goals his stats said he should get.

Ibra, Kane and Origi will turn into Ibra, Costa and Origi for when Costa returns.

Not in a hurry to get Aguero back tbh, City just don't look right and his ownership is no longer high enough to make it suicidal to go without, if that changes then I'll change.

Keep Costa, got Zlatan for Kane. Consider either to Aguero come GW20, depends on form since Costa's fixtures dive off a cliff at that point but if he's still the focal point of everything Chelsea do he'll score regularly in their 1-0 wins and fill his boots when they hammer someone on the way.

Kane's burned me for the past two weeks; won't consider him again unless Spurs as a whole go on a massive streak and he is actually involved.

It's really not just about the big front 3, it's about which Big 4 are you going with?

        Pick from:
Aguero, Costa, Ibrahimovic, Kane, Sanchez, Hazard and KDB.

Most people can reasonably only afford 4 of those, if they're going to have another high-mid price midfielder (like Mané/Firmino/Coutinho, Eriksen, Sterling, etc.) and an expensive defender (mostly one of Alonso, Walker, Bellerin).

Some might go for a big 3 up front, say Aguero Ibra and Costa after GW19, but sacrifice Hazard to do it. Some might do 3 power mids, plus a midrange striker and a cheapie to bench in a 3-5-2.

Only those who know nothing about DGW's will play the WC that early.

I think it's almost Impossible even with WC to get a decent team including all 5. Most players don't have the budget.

Next wildcard should really be saved for DGW's. Most teams with all those will have too many cheap players and won't be worth it. Only if you have an exceptionally high team value it could work

Are we talking about playing form or FPL form (which really doesn't exist)?

If it's playing form then I suggest you look again. Hazard has been excellent.

The price differential is small for most people. I bought Hazard at 9.8m and could sell for 10.1m. Özil is 9.6m. Not a lot in it.

      I made some simulation - Big 3 Team -

      Pickford
      Walker/Alonso/Valencia
      Sanchez/Coutinho/Phillips/McArthur
      Kun/Costa/Ibra

Phillips and McArthur - both cheap but both with good fixtures coming.
      Your thoughts ?
      It's just simulation !

Too much money in defence. Downgrade walker or Valencia and upgrade Philips or mcarthur

Anyone got the stats on captains this week? Mainly, Sanchez, Kane and Eriksen... I own all 3 but not got the armband on any so wondering how it will affect my overall rank if they do well.
