For a moment, we were beginning to believe it would never happen.

But Jonathan Moss had other ideas, perhaps, like me, he had been silly enough to overlook Diego Costa in his Fantasy Premier League squad.

We can’t claim that the Chelsea striker’s fifth yellow card and resultant one-match ban sent shockwaves through the Fantasy Football community – we were already in the brace position.

However, having navigated 11 domestic matches without an indiscretion, it looked as though Costa v2 was capable of making the Gameweek 19 curfew.

Now we have to consider our options.

The impact of the suspension is perhaps amplified by the fixture involved; the Boxing Day meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was potentially a platform for Costa to produce a big haul.

Then again, there was always the possibility that Antonio Conte would preserve the striker, if not in Gameweek 18, more likely for the visit of Stoke City that followed.

The Blues travel to Spurs in Gameweek 20 and, perched on the suspension tightrope; it would have been prudent for Conte to keep Costa out of the Potters clash and protected.

That’s perhaps a philosophical perspective on the current scenario – speculation to soften the blow.

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a say in all this – he is now at the forefront of the Costa fall-out.

The Swede’s brace of goals at The Hawthorns has elevated his status and taken him to an impressive 54 points over his last six Gameweeks.

Even Costa, with his unerring consistency, pales in comparison, returning 42 over his last six starts.

The United striker had already built a case prior to his latest goals; he soared to the top of the “transfers in” column within an hour of Costa’s booking.

Clearly, with United facing Sunderland, Middlesbrough and West Ham before the FA Cup break and Jose Mourinho playing down fears the striker will be rested, Ibrahimovic appears poised to maintain his current output.

But for those who adopted Costa early, maximising his price increase, the decision is far from straightforward.

To move to Ibrahimovic now could force them to stick by the United striker beyond Costa’s return in Gameweek 19, should funds limit their option.

Arguably, Ibrahimovic deserves our faith, even if it does mean shedding Costa.

But benching the Chelsea man also has to be an option.

For many, that tactic will depend on the strength of their existing reserves or if they are willing to part with four points to strengthen in order to absorb Costa’s loss.

Certainly, with Ibrahimovic in the mood, the Old Trafford meeting with Sunderland looks a daunting prospect for his non-owners.

Similarly, should Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku deliver double-figures in their Gameweek 17 matches, they will doubtless attract some Costa traffic.

Kane visits Southampton while Costa sits in the stands, perhaps an unlikely venue for the Spurs striker to return heavily.

But Lukaku makes a trip to Leicester City who will be without both Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth in their already suspect defence. Surprisingly, the Everton striker is already fourth for transfers in before kicking a ball in Gameweek 17.

Costa has shed 50,000 owners at the time of writing. Clearly, an exodus of sorts is under way, presumably made up of those who can either avoid a big loss of funds or who are willing to suck it up, driven by the appeal of the Ibrahimovic form.

It will be interesting to see just how much of his 52% ownership will be lost and just how quickly Ibrahimovic can climb in the nine days until the next deadline.

But there is perhaps an added twist.

When you consider that Sergio Aguero’s return coincides with Costa’s in Gameweek 19, the option of climbing the Ibrahimovic rises as a means of earning precious extra funds offers an intriguing possibility.

Costa to Ibrahimovic and then to Aguero is just one potential route on the crossroads created by today’s events.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What logic is there in selling a heavy hitter with a game (Kane) so you can bench another heavy hitter so you can play someone off your bench who is not strong enough for your first 11?

Let's not beat around the bush, if you can't sell Costa because you have too much value tied up in him then you wouldn't see the logic if it was in front of you.

It's so easy to sell and buy him back for others and if wasting a transfer means you bring in the form captain pick for next GW then waste that transfer, you have more next week.

I only bought him last week (got a blank and his 5th booking..) so I won't lose any money. Can drop him for Ibra with 2FT then get him back for free for Kane. I'll probably gain cash from the moves.

If you have Costa and Kane, and wouldn't lose money on Costa... makes sense to drop Costa for Ibra for a week or two. Why would you drop Kane? He is playing at least.

If people are eventually going to lose him for Aguero when he's back, then the value built up is not really important. They may not have any other pressing issues, so getting Ibra in could be an easy free trade. He's well capable of 13+pts next match making it worthwhile

        Great article, Jonty
After reading your article, I found it interesting to see how my team with look like going with 3 premium striker.

I took a quick look at a structure and I think it could be relevant for other people for inspiration.

I am really be tempted to do the restructuring of my team and go über cheap in defence, budget midfield and get 3 premium strikers.
My TV value is really low (103.4m), so it is hard for me to do properly.
Just to show my thoughts, this is the quick draft of a team I can get with my poor TV based on fewest transfers(6):

        Heaton Pickford
        £4.7m £4.1m

        Cédric McAuley Holebas Friend Ake
        £5.0m £4.8m £4.7m £4.4m £4.4m

Sánchez Coutinho Phillips Allen De Roon
        £11.5m £8.2m £5,5m £5.0m £4.3m

        Agüero Costa Ibrahimovic
        £12.8m 11.0m £11.2m

This would take me 6 transfers (2 FTs now) and I would be able to do this over a few weeks with some spare cash (whatever Costa, Coutinho and Aguero falls over the next few weeks so probably 0.3m-0.5m). The spare cash could be used to either upgrade a position somewhere or shave off a transfer used.
For people with a TV a bit higher than mine, would be able to upgrade either in defence or upgrade one of the mids.

Of course the above team is just a quick draft for me to show the structure. Even though I don't fully buy into attacking cover it is worth noting that you have the (at least one of the) key man from each of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool - or 5 top teams, whichever strikers you choose to go with. Going with Kane over Aguero obviously gives extra cash.
You have to choose which premium options you go with and even though I don't like loosing Hazard, I think the above draft could work - at least as a suggestion I can continue to work on.

What do you say? You think such a restructuring would have any merit or would 3 premium strikers only be relevant for people with higher TVs or willing to go Agueroless?

Any input would be much appreciated 🙂

I also had a look at a restructure due to this article. I have played 352 all season but I would go for:

          Pickford, Grant
          Alonso, Walker, McAuley, Holebas, Amat
Allen/Philips, Sanchez, De Roon, Sigurdsson, Eriksen
          Ibra, Aguero, Origi

I am concerned I'd have too many 2 pointers in midfield though and midfielders this season are where the points are at with so many good mid-price options. I am definitely bringing Kun back in but who for, I don't know yet. I might keep Anichebe and bring him in for Origi.

I am not sure if I like a 3-5-2 without Hazard to be honest.
De Roon you would be benching most weeks bare the ones where Phillips would have a really tough one.

Perhaps but look at Hazard's, not just recent but whole season, form. He's not justified his price tag at all. Based on that, do you not think Aguero, Sanchez and Ibra might make up for it? 433 every week.

I think it very well could...
Not sure why you would play 4-3-3 every week. Surely Allen/phillips will outscore McAuley or Holebas some weeks?

Well put. Been thinking along the same lines.

With both Costa and Ibra smashing the goals in, and Aguero having just the PL to worry about for a while a striker heavy team could have some merit.

Would love to read an article about this by Jonty or someone else on the site.

Cheers and that is exactly my thinking. Going to be tough for low TV teams, but with a "the big 5" of Aguero, Costa, Ibra, Sanchez and Coutinho it could be the way to go even if it means a compromise or two.

I think there's merit if you have a good defence and play 4-3-3. I wouldn't want to play two of them cheap midfield options every week, would rather upgrade to alonso etc. Brunt in defence though is basically a midfielder.

For me, I just can't see past playing two 5.0m mids every week. I'm struggling just having two in my team.

You might be right about the premium def over the mid, although with some planning and good transfers you can find runs of fixtures for the cheapish mids. Wouldn't mind playing Phillips every week from GW 20-27 for example. There has been run of cheap midfielders all season and I still think you can find value in them - at least if that is the cost of having a captaincy choice of "the big 5" every week.

                    Ah okay.
The thing my post was trying to ponder over, is how much we should be willing to sacrifice to have 4 of them.
I at least found it interesting that I could fit in all of Aguero, Costa, Ibra, Sanchez and Coutinho by downgrading my def and mids.

I know. It is the soon-to-be "fashionable" trend I think. My latest effort still means playing 2 up front (99% of weeks):

                      Grant Pickford
                      Walker Alonso Holebas McAuley Amat
Philips Hazard Sanchez de Roon Sigurdsson
                      Aguero Ibra Anichebe

I'd have 0.5ITB as prices stand too so I could potentially get Liverpool cover in for Sigurdsson when Swansea's run ends.

Yeah it seems that way. With the way the season is going, maybe it is just the right route to choose 3-4-5 of the best players and stick through thick and thin with them.

I think especially over Xmas, you need a strong bench and the likes of de Roon, Amat, Kingsley etc. along with possibly another 2 very weak playing players just won't do. From Jan, when there are fewer fixtures and less rotation, I think it may be a viable option. AFCON to take into account too.

I completely agree. I think De Roon is the weakest link in my draft above. The defence is decent for the price in my opinion and you can easily find 5 cheapish defenders to rotate. Of course you won't get the likes of Che or Tot def with my TV, but that is the sacrificed I'll have to make.

It´s christmas time. Wildcard activated! For those of you not on a wildcard. How many changes would you make your team if you had your wildcard left for christmas?

Heaton - Pickford (WC for Foster)
Daniels (WC for Smith) - Vertonghen (WC for Evans) - Alonso - Nyom (WC for Lenihan) - Friend
Sanchez - Capoue - de Roon (WC for Iwobi) - Sigurdsson - Lallana (WC for Firminho)
Negredo (WC for Wilson) - Ibra (WC for Costa) - Kane

        2.3 in bank

I´m trying to catch some possible price rises with Vert and Negredo. So they will not end up in my team necessarily. Then I made some sideways moves. Open for any suggestions on possible improvements!

People starting to eat their words about Ibrahimovic now? I think it just goes to show how lucky we got vs Stoke and Burnley where Heaton and Grant played blinders and people just dismissed it because they only saw his fpl points that gameweek and ignored the underlying numbers and clear potential. Class is permanent.

He scored 2 goals in 2 months though Demi, it's not about eating your words, he just wasn't a good pick at that time.

Very few players you can pick in your team and leave for 38 weeks.

I think i rephrased it wrongly, but hindsight does show he wasn't a good pick because of his 2 pointers. But he has been unlucky, surely u can agree? My main point is that the Ibra bashing was exaggerated because on another day he could have had hauls vs those two sides. But people just dismiss it and are like if my auntie had balls she's be my uncle etc.

He was a good pick, the numbers suggest he was a good pick, just very unlucky that it didn't work out

Nah class aint permanent. I'm pretty sure he won't be able to bang in the goals when he's 50.

But yeah, he's looked good for a while and been unlucky.

The team overall appears to be playing better now too, I think earlier in the season it was also a case of Man U struggling as a whole. Carrick makes a difference.

Story of the season mate. Consistently swapping big hitters around due to injuries suspensions etc.

You just cant settle for one team atm. each week you are forced into a decision . Volatile market plays a big role in this

Defensive change was priority, but Costa YC happened.
        Squad (1.3 ITB):

        Heaton - Pickford
        Amat - Holebas - McAuley - Hernandez - Pieters
        Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - Sigurdsson - Capoue
        Kane - Costa - Origi

        1. Capoue & McAuley to Azpi & De Roon (-4) was planned
        2. Costa (SP 10.4) to Ibrahimovic and McAuley to 5.2 (-4)
        3. Kane to Ibrahimovic and McAuley to 5.9 (-4), bench Costa
        4. 1 and 3 (-8), wouks have to play De Roon.

For owners, it's perfect to keep and then switch to Coutinho when he returns. Especially for owners who have decided to sell other Pool options.

To me it depends on how money you have bound up in Costa, because I think you’d like to have him back in your team when he returns.

I would also consider to have Rondón instead of Negredo.

He'll probably fall to £10.8 so the loss wouldn’t be that great. I got him at £9.6, so I don’t plan to sell, needless to say perhaps (although my team’s in pretty bad shape for next gameweek – and I’ve had five consecutive red arrows...).

Have you considered just doing Alli to Eriksen? I’m not sure Sánchez will outscore Eriksen by many points.

Preferred Burnley/West Brom/Middlesbrough combination long term?

        A. Heaton / Foster / Friend (+ £0.2)
        B. Heaton / Foster / Barragán
        C. Heaton / Valdes / Evans (+ £0.1)
        D. Heaton / Valdes / Nyom –4 points (+ £0.3)

Both Foster and Valdes rotate pretty well with Heaton.

Thanks! That’s a good one for sure, but I’m afraid I can’t afford Brunt (unless I do Foster to Robinson for a hit, but then I would obviously need to play Heaton every round).

I was so looking forward to selling Chadli this week but after Costa's YC, it looks like I'm stuck with him another week - unless any of you think I should lose him for a hit?

        Clyne Kosc Alonso
        Siggy Sanchez Eriksen Capoue
        Lukaku Ibra Defoe
