For a moment, we were beginning to believe it would never happen.

But Jonathan Moss had other ideas, perhaps, like me, he had been silly enough to overlook Diego Costa in his Fantasy Premier League squad.

We can’t claim that the Chelsea striker’s fifth yellow card and resultant one-match ban sent shockwaves through the Fantasy Football community – we were already in the brace position.

However, having navigated 11 domestic matches without an indiscretion, it looked as though Costa v2 was capable of making the Gameweek 19 curfew.

Now we have to consider our options.

The impact of the suspension is perhaps amplified by the fixture involved; the Boxing Day meeting with AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge was potentially a platform for Costa to produce a big haul.

Then again, there was always the possibility that Antonio Conte would preserve the striker, if not in Gameweek 18, more likely for the visit of Stoke City that followed.

The Blues travel to Spurs in Gameweek 20 and, perched on the suspension tightrope; it would have been prudent for Conte to keep Costa out of the Potters clash and protected.

That’s perhaps a philosophical perspective on the current scenario – speculation to soften the blow.

Typically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a say in all this – he is now at the forefront of the Costa fall-out.

The Swede’s brace of goals at The Hawthorns has elevated his status and taken him to an impressive 54 points over his last six Gameweeks.

Even Costa, with his unerring consistency, pales in comparison, returning 42 over his last six starts.

The United striker had already built a case prior to his latest goals; he soared to the top of the “transfers in” column within an hour of Costa’s booking.

Clearly, with United facing Sunderland, Middlesbrough and West Ham before the FA Cup break and Jose Mourinho playing down fears the striker will be rested, Ibrahimovic appears poised to maintain his current output.

But for those who adopted Costa early, maximising his price increase, the decision is far from straightforward.

To move to Ibrahimovic now could force them to stick by the United striker beyond Costa’s return in Gameweek 19, should funds limit their option.

Arguably, Ibrahimovic deserves our faith, even if it does mean shedding Costa.

But benching the Chelsea man also has to be an option.

For many, that tactic will depend on the strength of their existing reserves or if they are willing to part with four points to strengthen in order to absorb Costa’s loss.

Certainly, with Ibrahimovic in the mood, the Old Trafford meeting with Sunderland looks a daunting prospect for his non-owners.

Similarly, should Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku deliver double-figures in their Gameweek 17 matches, they will doubtless attract some Costa traffic.

Kane visits Southampton while Costa sits in the stands, perhaps an unlikely venue for the Spurs striker to return heavily.

But Lukaku makes a trip to Leicester City who will be without both Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth in their already suspect defence. Surprisingly, the Everton striker is already fourth for transfers in before kicking a ball in Gameweek 17.

Costa has shed 50,000 owners at the time of writing. Clearly, an exodus of sorts is under way, presumably made up of those who can either avoid a big loss of funds or who are willing to suck it up, driven by the appeal of the Ibrahimovic form.

It will be interesting to see just how much of his 52% ownership will be lost and just how quickly Ibrahimovic can climb in the nine days until the next deadline.

But there is perhaps an added twist.

When you consider that Sergio Aguero’s return coincides with Costa’s in Gameweek 19, the option of climbing the Ibrahimovic rises as a means of earning precious extra funds offers an intriguing possibility.

Costa to Ibrahimovic and then to Aguero is just one potential route on the crossroads created by today’s events.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Current team:

    Heaton (Grant)
    Alonso Gibson Holebas (Amat, Tymon)
    Sanchez Hazard Eriksen Sigurdsson (Coquelin)
    Kane Costa Llorente

    1 FT 0.2 ITB

No idea where I go from here...

Want to get in Ibrahimovic: United fixtures moving forward looks yummy.

    Should I do:
    A) Costa + downgrade a player (for example Llorente) --> Ibrahimovic + x player for a -4p hit
    B) Kane --> Ibra for no hit, and just put Costa on bench for one gameweek?
    C) Other obvious transfer I am overlooking

Hi guys. I've just read the knee jerk and I'm confused.

What is Mark saying? Do Costa > Ibra to make money? Is it a move you should only do if you bought Costa late?

What if I want to buy Costa back right away (which I do)? Will I lose money in the end?

Can anyone explain it in simpler terms?

              £10.6m.

Because you only get half the profits you've made on him when you sell him, but you will have to buy him back at full price.

If you bough him at 10.6, you can sell for 10.8m, as he is 11.0m now.

That means (in terms of value) you would break even if he falls 0.2m - this is without the potential money made on Ibra. Not sure how (much) the red flag will affect Costa's price drops, but you can see an extensive discussion under the previous article.

Personally I think the decision whether to do Costa -> Ibra depends on 3 things

            1) How much you bought Costa for
            2) The rest of your squad (can you field a good XI with Costa on the bench next week) and
            3) If you sell Costa, how soon would you want him back.

              1) £10.6m

              2) Fairly decent yeah.

              3) Right away.

Still not sure if I'm missing out? 🙁

                Look what I wrote above.
If you bought him at 10.6, you are most likely going to be able to buy him back without a loss - or perhaps even make money combined with any Ibra profits.
The question is if you think Ibra's points next week will be so much higher than who can play that it merits 2 FTs...

If you bought costa at 9.5 then it's unlikely you'd sell if you want him back long term.

If you bought him recently then chances are you can buy him back at the same price or just get ibra in for a couple and consider then using that slot for Aguero.

That's my take on it anyway.

Thanks Jonty. That is a bit clearer.

So lose Costa and buy him back for roughly the same price I paid (£10.6m)

Meanwhile I will make £0.2m to £0.3m on Ibra.

But that is roughly the same as I have already made on Costa right now.

Seems like it is balancing out.

Yeah and what Jonty also writes is that Mark suggests a few different routes.
            1) Stick with Costa if you bought him early or don't want to waste two FTs if you have a decent XI next week.
            2) Sell Costa if you bought him late (like you) and buy back in a GW or two.
            3) Sell Costa for Ibra. Then the week after use the profits to buy Aguero. (not getting Costa back in the near future - from these transfers at least)

Thanks for taking the time to explain this, that's really kind of you.

Is there any route given I paid £10.6m for Costa whereby I can boost my TV?

Don't even own Costa myself, so needed to check 😉

I am not 100% sure with the red flag, but based on TORRESMAGIC response in the linked thread, Costa will maximum drop 0.2-0.3 before next deadline. Let's just say he will drop 0.2 for arguments sake.

You sell Costa tonight. You have a current SV of 10.8m. If Costa then drops 0.2m until next GW, you can buy him back for the same amount, as you have sold him for. If he drops 0.3m, you will have made 0.1m on Costa.

BUT if buy Ibra, who will most likely rise 0.3m before next GW, you will also earn 0.1m on Ibra.

So the best case scenario is that Costa drops to 10.7m and you will make 0.2m with Ibra profits. You almost can't lose money at least, but you can make either 0.1m or 0.2m in profits. Now you need to figure out if that is worth 2 FTs and/or you think Ibra will score enough points more than your current starter to benefit from the transfer...

                🙂

          Firmino price change predictor (fplstatistics):

          Last night: -140%
          Tonight: -66%

Costa & Firmino -> Ibra & Walcott or maybe to go with Ox and save some money? Or there is better option?
Already have Sanchez, Hazard & Siggy in the middle.

No, Firmino was my only Liverpool player. I was considering getting Lallana but I prefer Arsenal schedule much more. If I get Ox now I could have enough to replace Anichebe with Origi next week.

He likes home games, and he has 2 home games next

Small chance but he could play as a striker with Pedro and Willian behind him (done that a couple times in pre season)

            Alonso - Lovren - McAuley - Holebas - Amat
Hazard - Sanchez - Eriksen - Lallana - De Roon
            Kane - Costa - Origi

I think Kane to Ibra is 110% sure for me. Because fixtures.

But then I don´t know should I change Jones in? But whom:
            1. Holebas (attack potential, free kicks)
            2. McAuley (better team than Holebas)
            3. Lovren (the best team of these, but the Pool to let a lot of goals and is more expensive than the other two)

            Cech / Pickford
            Lovren / Williams / Vertonghen / Amat / Francis
            Sanchez / Allen / Payet / Hazard / Capoue
            Kane / Costa / Origi

Not usually a fan of taking hits but what the best option from below.

            A) Williams > Jones ( bench Costa play Allen and capoue)
            B) Williams + Payet > Alonso + Lallana -4 (bench Costa play Allen and capoue)
            C) Williams/Payet/Costa > David Luiz/Lallana/Ibra -8
            D) Williams/Lovren/Payet/Costa > Jones/Alonso/Lallana/Ibra -12

Never done a -12 hit in my life but have exact money for it and can't help think it looks good.
