Arsenal make their predictable exit, in unexpectedly catastrophic style, as confidence saps from the Gunners’ legs and doubts surrounding the merits of re-investing in Alexis Sanchez builds. Here’s the notes from Tuesday’s Champions League tie…

Arsenal 1 Bayern Munich 5 (2-10 on aggregate)

Arsenal’s annual Round of 16 exit from the Champions League was an exceptionally chastening affair this time around, outplayed and prodigiously outscored by a Bayern Munich side in no mood for charity.

Theo Walcott’s goal gave the home fans faint hope of at least a tilt at second leg redemption and, in truth, the Gunners were the better side for much of the first half.

But the match, as in the first leg, hinged on Laurent Koscielny.

In Munich, the Frenchman’s injury precipitated an epic collapse. At The Emirates, the centre-half was sent off, after initially being shown only a yellow, for fouling Lewandowski when the Pole was through on goal after the break.

The striker duly converted from the spot, and another capitulation followed.

With Arsene Wenger’s hold on power looking increasingly tenuous, and star man Alexis Sanchez clearly not the happiest at the moment, there seems little to tempt Fantasy managers towards the Arsenal patch of North London at present.

Three of the side’s four most popular players are at the back – Peter Cech, Koscielny and Hector Bellerin. Conceding 10 goals to Bayern and keeping just one clean sheet in five league matches doesn’t suggest much joy ahead for those managers with interest in the Arsenal rearguard.

But the Gunners do enjoy a favourable run from Gameweek 29.

Aside from the visit of Manchester City, they will face West Brom, Palace and Middlesbrough away and entertain West Ham and Sunderland – all fixtures that have the potential for better defensive returns than Arsenal have managed in recent weeks.

But Sanchez is the big concern. Still owned by 27.4%, his place at the spearhead of the attack is suddenly in doubt.

Danny Welbeck, who was named in the starting line-up against Bayern, fell ill in the warm-up and Olivier Giroud took his place.

It remains unclear whether Welbeck or Sanchez would have operated on the left – or if the pair might have interchanged – but the Chilean ended up out wide when Giroud came into the side.

The Frenchman also started up front in the 3-1 loss at Liverpool, with Sanchez perhaps no longer nailed-on for the advanced role that has brought most of his 17 league goals this season.

Certainly, in a double Gameweek scenario, we have to think that Giroud would get an opportunity in the striker role in one of the two matches.

A Gameweek 28 blank at least gives Fantasy managers some time to consider their Arsenal options and, more importantly, their confidence and frame of mind.

The key consideration will be how we bid to exploit the two double Gameweeks still to come from Arsene Wenger’s side before the end of what has, otherwise, become another predictably uninspiring season.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Ramsey (Coquelin 72), Walcott, Sanchez (Perez 73), Giroud (Ozil 72).
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Gibbs.

Seems to be so many great choices I can't make my mind up on transfers!

Trying to cover Pool, Spurs, City, Che and even WHU plus get Sanchez is a real headache for midfield trades!

Assuming we know the postponed DGW games by GW29 (or 30) deadline, when would you be looking at wildcarding?

Or would you stay flexible and keep the WC in hand for as long as possible?

This time of the year is the annual Arsenal collapse time. However, they always go on to win 10 of the next 12 games or so destroying teams in their path to seal top 4 finish (and finish above Spurs 🙂 ). Are we too hasty to declare the demise of Arsenal?

As for Sanche, Surely if hewants to go in the summer, he will make a deal with Wenger to give his best till end of season and leave if a bigger club comes knocking in the summer for a hefty sum. He will probably do a Suraez rather than a Payet. He is that kind of player. Agreed?

Fully agree. Arsenal always dip around this time, yet it always shocks everyone. Sanchez still has a shot at EPL top scorer, he might even get more selfish as the season progresses. And we know that somehow Arsenal will overtake Spurs - that must mean a bunch of wins still to come.

        1. Should we seriously consider a GW29 WC? This could allow for fixture changes and GW28 dumping while also setting up for future DGWs.
        2. What is the ideal GW29 onwards team?

Scoutcast Question - Once GW28/29 is out of the way, is Gabbiadini a season keeper? Considering that he has some good fixtures (GW30 & 31 seem like an ideal time to bring him in for Lukaku) and doubles to come he would also enable us to save money for the rest of our teams and benches for the use of wildcards and chips

Given Spurs's form when playing 3 at the back and their devastating home form and Kane's form (especially at home), would you triple captain Kane on a SGW with a plum home fixture? Aguero TCer currently only on 7 pts from the chip and could end up with less. Ibra and Sanchez not reassuring options atm. Kane can easily get 15-20 pts in a SGW.

Aguero could get less than 10 in this DGW but probably won't.
Kane could get less than 3 in a SGW but probably won't.
Aguero is more likely to get 20 this DGW than Kane is in a SGW.

Nothing I have seen from him this season gives any indication of that. Apart from Hull and Burnley at home, Kane is always good for double digits in plum fixtures at WHL. A 12-17 pointer is not so difficult to get right with him. Aguero is on 7 points and realistically even though I don't think he'll end up on less than 10, a return of 12-15 is likely. Kane can match that in a SGW. I'd gladly TC him against the likes of Bournemouth, Swansea, Swansea, Palace, Watford or Snnderland for instance if his form continues and Spurs continue playing with 3 at the back. It all depends on Sanchez and Arsenal though.

Kun only needs one goal tonight to reach about 14, or two to reach 20. Only 3 of his 12 goals this season have come at home and he has yet to score a home brace, so his expected total this DGW should be about 14. However, Stoke have already conceded 4 goals in a match against Palace, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs, and Kane got three goals plus an assist against them, so that might increase Kun's chances of getting a brace.

Kane would need two goals in a SGW to reach 13, or three plus an assist to reach 20. His plum fixture is probably at home to Watford or Bournemouth in GW32 or 33. He is certainly in excellent form, but he isn't going to score a hat-trick every week. His expected score in a plum home SGW would be 13 in my opinion.

For those who haven't played their TC chip yet and are planning to Bench Boost in DGW37, the popular alternatives will probably be Sanchez's and Ibra's other DGWs, but we don't yet know when or how favourable these might be. Against average opposition in a DGW they would also be expected to score about 14 points. And yea, if you don't fancy one of these then Kane in a plum SGW might also be a good option.

14*3 is a respectable TC score - anything more than that is a bonus.

Sounds like you're trying to set expectations too low so that you're not disappointed? Think Sanchez and Aguero set the benchmark last season and I think a TC success is 20 points or more. Anything less and it's meh. Let's not forget, Costa is just not explosive can easily get 14-15 over 2 GWs with just a single goal each. Don't see anyone talking of him as a TC candidate. 14 is just way too low and I want more even as a captainer and non-TC.

Yes, I'm certainly hoping that Kun gets a brace tonight and reaches 20 points for the DGW and will be a bit disappointed if he doesn't. But when I looked back at his home record I became less confident. However, considering Stoke's away form, I am still hopeful for him.

20 points is a success, but I wouldn't be surprised if the average score for a Triple Captain is nearer 14-15. Very few will beat that in a SGW, and the number of good DGW options is limited. We all hope for a Sanchez, Aguero or Kane in explosive form with two matches against weak opposition in a DGW, but that option is not always available, so we can't guarantee that this year's TC scores will be as big as last year's.

The other reason that Costa is not being talked about as a TC candidate is that his only DGW is likely to be in GW37 when most of us will probably be playing our Bench Boost instead.

            When to wildcard?

Is it worth using a wildcard on gw 29? Can ship out Man city players who have poor fixtures 29/30/31 remove Bournemouth and West Brom players and other poor players who are clogging up squads due to playing gw28.

Bring in 2 x arsenal/man utd/southampton players due to 2dgw and the rest of the squad as you feel?

When making transfers this week, is it worth focusing on whether e.g a striker is playing your defender therefore not transferring them in. I want Llorente but have Maguire, for example.

May it actually be better to WC in the next couple of GWs getting in essential assets (eg. Spurs) and stocking up on upcoming DGW players (MUN, SOT, etc)?

I see a lot of conversation around how to handle the coming weeks, however, it involves having transfer wild card.

What is the general advice for people who no longer have their transfer wild card around the coming weeks e.g. only 4 matches this week but potential double game weeks in 38.

Southampton have often given us good FPL prospects, but this season the rotation rollercoaster has made them irrelevant. With the Saints now out of all 3 cups, can they become an option again? Particularly offensively (Gabbiadini, Tadic, dare I say Redmond?).

Can we become a bit blinkered?

I am desperate to bring in Alli and Kane but just noticed that my Gylfi & Llorente combo over the last 6 games have clocked up 80 points and 3 double digits hauls between them and neither blank in GW28.

This is just one point less than Kane and Alli and the same number of double digit hauls, all for £6m less.

If Kane and Alli are essential ....

Late to this, but had a few questions:

            1. West Brom assets to be taken out for which set of cheap/affordable players?
            2. How long do you keep Swansea assets - just 2-3GWs or till the end given the fixtures?
            3. Is Sanchez still essential, or would you rather spread that money around more 8mm mids?
            4. Front three after GW30: Kane Kaku Gabbi or Kane Costa Gabbi?

I listen to the Scoutcast religiously every week, but have never asked a question - so here goes.

"Is there a case for wildcarding early to sort out the mess post-GW28 and catch the inevitable price rises of Kane etc. We all know who will be playing doubles and roughly when so why not get the core players in now and use future FTs to catch any changes in form or fixture announcements?"

I can't believe you are scoutcasting right after the TC dgw. Emotions are going to be running high! Do the scoutcasters have any advice for how to cope with the emotional impact of fpl? The heartbreak that can follow getting Alli in early, the shipping him after one goal only for him to score several braves in a row?

With Chelsea nearing the title, are people worried about getting Chelsea players back in if they got rid for dgw?

Once title wrapped out Alonso could be rested up to give Ake game time etc. I think Costa would be ok as he is going for golden boot but players like Willian and Terry wild get gametime surely.

With more dgw to come and careful planning needed, I might avoid getting back in

I think it's great we're seeing different TC strategies to last year and hopefully that applies to WC and DGW

Question: With the quality and quantity of DGWers (as opposed to last year) doesn't an earlier WC (GW29-31) make sense?

Reasons I will do it is that GW 26-28 rollercoaster has left my team weakened plus it's easier to manage any changes due to form/ eligibity on a week-by-week basis after WC played in lieu of upcoming DGWs, width the breath and depth of quality out there.

Last year the WC the week prior was influenced by the quality available and not diluting the team too early.

Isn't it a logical move to WC after GW28 and bring in around 10 key DGW players before their bandwagon and price rises start, e.g. Kane / Alli / Walker / Sanchez / Pedro / Costa / Tadic / Gabbiadini / Valencia / Jones / Zaha / other cheapies etc.

We can keep 5-6 important players from other teams like Mane / Siggy / etc. and transfer them out 1 by 1 till GW 36 to use BB in GW37.

          A) Ignore Sanchez and go:
          GW28: Sterling -> Siggy
          GW29: Kun -> Kane

          B) Prepare for a potential Sanchez return and go:
          GW28: Sterling -> King
          GW29: (i) Mane -> Sanchez or (ii) Firmino/Kun -> Sanchez/Kane (-4)

          Jaku
          Baines, F Mori, Brunt, Robertson
          Mane, Firmino, Snoddy, Sterling*

So are Swanseas. Neither Swansea nor Watford keep clean sheets, so t's rather a matter of trading a potential -4pt hit for Kane in GW29 for a -2pt hit in GW2, on the assumption that both defenders are equally crap.

Agree with Jarviah that one of Sterling or Sane will be on the bench. Perhaps both?
Certainly going to be nervous times waiting for the team sheet.

Anything possible of course. Sterling got brought off early last game which makes me thing he will start, same with Toure. If they were going to get a rest in this game why bring them off early?

This. Also Pep said he doesn't 90 mins at same level kind of hints that is likely. Sterling only played 70 mins so he should start.

Pep is rotating only with bad form, injuries or player are tired.
He is reasonable and predictable in his moves. He has favourite players like Sane, Jesus or Fernandihno, but its obvious.
I think there will be no real suprises.
            Willy
            Sagna, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov
Fernandinho, Silva, Sterling, KDB, Sane, Aguero

Sane and Sterling don't need rest as they are young!
Toure and Silva may need it.

be close that top 4 spot. City spurs and Chelsea you would expect to easily get through.

I still think Arsnal will do it .Ibrah out for UTD they lost their carrier and then finally their games toughen up. pool not good enough against Lower teams who crowd the space that Mane and Co run into. Hope it's Pool myself if i had to choose but...

How many points more do you think you will have in 28 if you've planned and have 10/11 players vs. those who have triple Spurs/Chelsea and now have 6/7?

I feel like the points will be really concentrated amongst a few suspects (e.g. Mane; Firmino; Kaku; Siggy) and it'll come down to "got or not".

I think most will have the more essential players, and a lot of our "top up" players are going to be poor quality (e.g. Tom Carroll or Fletcher given a start).

I reckon we'll get a net gain of about 10 points for having the extra players. Any other estimates? 🙂

There will always be other haulers than the usual suspects. Personally I expect Bournemouth against West Ham to be a goalfest. Meaning King/Fraser/Afobe and Carroll/Antonio/Lanzini/Snoddy/Ayew to haul.

I have 11 players for GW28. The players I think are 'poor waulity' in my team at the moment are Fletcher and Fonte

Fletcher I am more than happy to keep a bench fodder for the moment, because I'll ideally have a 3-4-3 lineup.

Fonte is a problem because I don't see WH tightening the defence, and with McAuley having horrible fixtures, I might want to get a more solid defender in place

Overall, I'm desperately hoping it's more than 10 points for the extra players to be honest 🙂

The trick is to not sacrifice key assets but to just get extra GW28 players from your "fillers", "enablers", bench fodder.

Having s bench moving forward of Jaku / Tom Carroll / Robertson / Olsson for example. It means you can lose the duds like Holgate, Stanislas and Amat.

Also there are a lot of players with great potential for GW28 and on that I'd want in my main team such as Lukaku, Coleman, Baines, Mane, Coutinho and Siggy etc.

              Exactly -

I discussed this before this GW - Too many people were sacrificing great long term assets (Kane, Alli, Eriksen, even Liverpool mids) for short term gains, which would then necessitate hits later (Because no one is going to hold onto Sane, Sterling and Aguero, as a trio, long term, with Sterling as the only good long term asset imo).

This week, the rule should be the same. Does the move benefit you long term, and are you taking out valuable assets?

I'm following this tactic, bar one difference: Llorente in for a hit. I want Kane instead of Ibra long term, but do not want to risk Kane now. So I will get in Llorente for a hit, knowing that -2 is my worst outcome.

Seconded. I've definitely learnt from this not to prioritise one GW over those preceding - I must be down ~100 points by avoiding Kane/Eriksen in in favour of GW28.

                Confirmation bias at its finest.

If every team had a DGW it would be a fair point, but with only one DGW match he's at a major disadvantage.
The scout gets the "pick of the litter", and he is forced into his 4th, 5th and 6th best options if he's to gain an advantage. How that in any way, shape or form can be favorable compared to simply getting a 1st option from another team is beyond me.

I applaud you for chasing the victory in every way, although it feels a bit like diving in the penalty area: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GngPr8hDuXI

My view is that Kaku and Kane are two most important keepers in our squads till the end of the season . Of course not a rocket science...purely based on their stats and performances.

Not sure about Kaku, might remove him for the two dodgy away fixtures 30-1 then bring him back for the two amazing home fixtures 32-3!

Costa maybe on a swing with him - Gabbiadini has a really loud shout as the enabler for Sanchez.

            From Wikipedia:

The winners of the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League and 2016–17 UEFA Europa League are each given an additional entry if they do not qualify for the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League through their domestic league. Because a maximum of five teams from one association can enter the Champions League, if both the Champions League title holders and the Europa League title holders are from the same top three ranked association and finish outside the top four of their domestic league, the fourth-placed team of their association will be moved to the Europa League.[

Yes as above there is a maximum of five places for each country to accommodate Europa/Champions League winners too. So if Utd and City or Leicester were to win then fourth place would miss out.

Llorente a great Gabbiadini placeholder with OK fixtures 28-9.
Both away, so you're only hoping for a goal maybe, but still worth having. Carroll too injury prone, and WHU with patchy form.

I'm starting to come around to the GW29/30 WC idea. I'd want triple Spurs, Sanchez, Gabbiadini, players from United/Chelsea, any other obvious DGW players - from that list Alonso is the only one I currently have, due to this DGW/GW28.

What are the main reasons for saving the WC even longer?

Been toying with the idea myself. Doing it early also gives enough time to bring in some DGW'ers if I want them.

Doing it too late I worry that there'll be rotation or teams playing for nothing, making it a waste.

I think am issue for me , although it's not the worse idea, is the fact that you would have to tie money up in your bench ready for the bench boost. Lot of decent ish players on your bench taking up funds that could be spread around?

Yeah, that could be an issue. I would probably have a cheap fifth mid/def now (ones that play in DGW34), then look to upgrade those between 34 and 37 - might take a couple of hits, but 8 points is nothing when considering how much better my team will be before then.

Already have Alli, Valencia (the only United player I want with Ibra suspended) and Alonso + Pedro. Happy to keep Lukaku, Mane and Coleman for now. Aguero's PL record is ridiculous. 114 goals in 170 games - 12 in 20 this season.

          Some interesting stats:

          - Manchester City have won three of their last four league matches against Stoke, scoring four goals in each victory.
          - The Potters have lost seven of their eight Premier League matches away at Manchester City by an aggregate score of 19-0.

But Hughes is going to park the bus today:

"It may be that we look at shaping up to be a little bit more frustrating. I've always backed my teams to go there and have a go because I feel we've got good talent that can test any team in the Premier League. But sometimes if you're not quite there and everybody is not quite playing to their maximum you can get caught out. It's just where I see us at the moment."

However, Martins-Indi and Johnson are injured so Stoke may be missing some first choice defenders.

I read up about City's record against Stoke, as well as the fact that someone has had a brace almost every time against them in recent past

Honestly, I don't mind park the bus because it shouldn't stop City, and now I'm just hoping Kun starts!

Parking the bus means Kun gets to spend time in the box instead of backtracking and playing midfielder.
Not necessarily a bad thing 😀

hi all, does anyone know if the fantasy premier league site ever respond to messages / amend points? I know this is rookie but the official app, on sunday eve showed tottenham playing spurs still and did so until midday monday. i swapped in kane to take advantage of price rises and of course have since found out they dont have a game. i've appealed to have my transfers reversed. does anyone have any insight on this?

Not much chat on a GW28 wildcard, any particular reason? Saving for double gameweeks everyone will have the same players, isn't this week a better opportunity?

5 transfers before GW34 and we know which teams are more likely to have fixtures that week so you can have 4 potential DGW players on your bench this week. That would give you a potential 9 doubles in 34, appreciate this isn't 1 for the masses as it hasn't been discussed but there's some merit to it

Any thoughts on WC team for after GW28?

              Jaku - Pickford
              Walker - Valencia - Williams - Yoshida - Stephens
              Sanchez - Eriksen - Pedro - Iwobi - King
              Kane - Costa - Gab

Intention would be to shift Williams for double GW defender after 29.

Iwobi's stats have looked good since Xmas time - plus Arsenal double GW likely to come soon.

Thanks! What's the danger with Iwobi? Is he likely to drop out to, say, Xhaka or Ramsey?

I could sell Xhaka and King, bring in a cheapie 4.4 midfielder and then I'd have about 6.7 to play with. But even then there's no one in that price range that really tickles my fancy. Especially with the likelihood of a double gameweek coming soon for Arsenal, Soton, Mids and Sunderland. Might the Ox come into contention?

Thanks! Yeah, the danger there is that they're both so cheap they'll be hard to replace too.

Do we think Iwobi is nailed? He's started every game since GW17 and averaged 4.7 points per game since then. I want to get one of the early double GW players in - which means Arse, Soton (already have three), Mids or Sun...

Good morning. What would you do with this lot:

              Foster
              Brunt, Baines, Robertson, ALONSO
              Sigurdsson, Mane, Antonio, STERLING

subs: Heaton --- Clayton, Holgate, IBRAHIMOVIC --- 0.5 ITB

              A) Sterling & Ibrahimovic -> Coutinho & Llorente (-4)
              B) Sterling, Ibra & Clayton -> Coutinho, Llorente & T.Carroll (-8)
              C) Something else, what?

Could be -6 if you subsequently have to transfer a player out through injury. You'll also be wanting to move Brunt along from next week, so after this weeks pandemonium transfers should be made less for the short term.
