Arsenal make their predictable exit, in unexpectedly catastrophic style, as confidence saps from the Gunners’ legs and doubts surrounding the merits of re-investing in Alexis Sanchez builds. Here’s the notes from Tuesday’s Champions League tie…

Arsenal 1 Bayern Munich 5 (2-10 on aggregate)

Arsenal’s annual Round of 16 exit from the Champions League was an exceptionally chastening affair this time around, outplayed and prodigiously outscored by a Bayern Munich side in no mood for charity.

Theo Walcott’s goal gave the home fans faint hope of at least a tilt at second leg redemption and, in truth, the Gunners were the better side for much of the first half.

But the match, as in the first leg, hinged on Laurent Koscielny.

In Munich, the Frenchman’s injury precipitated an epic collapse. At The Emirates, the centre-half was sent off, after initially being shown only a yellow, for fouling Lewandowski when the Pole was through on goal after the break.

The striker duly converted from the spot, and another capitulation followed.

With Arsene Wenger’s hold on power looking increasingly tenuous, and star man Alexis Sanchez clearly not the happiest at the moment, there seems little to tempt Fantasy managers towards the Arsenal patch of North London at present.

Three of the side’s four most popular players are at the back – Peter Cech, Koscielny and Hector Bellerin. Conceding 10 goals to Bayern and keeping just one clean sheet in five league matches doesn’t suggest much joy ahead for those managers with interest in the Arsenal rearguard.

But the Gunners do enjoy a favourable run from Gameweek 29.

Aside from the visit of Manchester City, they will face West Brom, Palace and Middlesbrough away and entertain West Ham and Sunderland – all fixtures that have the potential for better defensive returns than Arsenal have managed in recent weeks.

But Sanchez is the big concern. Still owned by 27.4%, his place at the spearhead of the attack is suddenly in doubt.

Danny Welbeck, who was named in the starting line-up against Bayern, fell ill in the warm-up and Olivier Giroud took his place.

It remains unclear whether Welbeck or Sanchez would have operated on the left – or if the pair might have interchanged – but the Chilean ended up out wide when Giroud came into the side.

The Frenchman also started up front in the 3-1 loss at Liverpool, with Sanchez perhaps no longer nailed-on for the advanced role that has brought most of his 17 league goals this season.

Certainly, in a double Gameweek scenario, we have to think that Giroud would get an opportunity in the striker role in one of the two matches.

A Gameweek 28 blank at least gives Fantasy managers some time to consider their Arsenal options and, more importantly, their confidence and frame of mind.

The key consideration will be how we bid to exploit the two double Gameweeks still to come from Arsene Wenger’s side before the end of what has, otherwise, become another predictably uninspiring season.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Ramsey (Coquelin 72), Walcott, Sanchez (Perez 73), Giroud (Ozil 72).
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Gibbs.

If you don't care, I'd be tempted to punt on Clyne for whoever - Friend or Stones ideally.

RP. Alonso, Coleman, Evans, Holebas, Holgate

If I make Holgate > Fernandez -4 this week I can field 11. I know that Holgate may play but it looks like he has been dropped so it's -2 actually.
Than WBA has heavy fixtures (ARS, MU) so Evans will probably stay on my bench and the choice would be between Holebas and Fernandez. Other idea is to get rid of Holebas. I look only at few next games as potential DGW in GW 34 will change a lot.

    Holebas (blank, Cry, SUN)
    Fernandez (Hull, Bou, MIDD)

    a) Holgate > Fernandez -4
    b) Holebas > Fernandez -4 (free up 0.4)
    c) keep Holebas & Holgate

      Hey man

Based on fixtures and appearance certainty, I'd be tempted to actually do Holgate out for Fernandez if you can afford it - Fernandez at 4.2 is cheap enough to function as your 5th def benchfodder imo.

Golebas is decent for that cry SUN double - can imagine an assist or so somewhere there 🙂

cheers! but it would be a choice between Fernandez and Holebas in GW 29 and GW 30 as Coleman and Alonso are nailed in my team.

I have Sane and Sterling but all I care about is Yaya. Hopefully he will start. Don't want Aguero to be on pens with Shawcross playing.

I'm thinking Aguero wont even start tbh. He looked so tired at the end of the Sunderland match, and Pep's reference to some players being tired is foreboding.

I think he'll rest him vs Middlesbrough. Probably KDB coming for Yaya, the rest will be the same imo.

      Randolph (Jaku)
      Coleman, Evans, Holgate* (Alonso, Holebas)
      Mane, Firmino, Siggy, Phillips, Fletcher
      Lukaku, Llorente (KAne)

      Phillips > Sanchez next week

      Quite happy with that

      Heaton (Foster)
      Coleman McAuely Fonte Mawson (Love)
      Siggy Snoddy Mane Feltcher (Alli)
      Kaku Llorente (Ibra)

The West Brom triple up needs some work over the coming weeks, but I don't really think its a very bad team to have overall

        I'm thinking mine will be

        Heaton,
        Coleman, Baines, Brunt, Maguire,
        Sigurdsson, Mane, Snodgrass, Phillips,
        Lukaku, Llorente.

        Robinson, Defoe, Eriksen, Walker.

So not bad, as it goes. Then I'll move Llorente out for Kane and begin the rebuild (Yoshida, Gabbiandini, maybe Sanchez in over the coming weeks).

I always planned to have 7; that increased to 9 when Liverpool got themselves a fixture. I didn't want my squad stunk up by WHU, Bou, Hull "assets"

Everton have a great fixture in 29, Swans & Bourne play each other, so their assets are playable there, & WHU are home to Leic so again, not too bad, giving those with 11 a little breathing space for a sort out.

Carroll is a great value 5th mid that I rarely need to play, but serves up decent returns if I have to.

The other two .... well over the last 6 games their 80 points is one less point than Kane and Alli and the same number of double digit hauls, all for £6m less - great guys to be lumbered with 🙂

How many points more do you think you will have in 28 if you've planned and have 10/11 players vs. those who have triple Spurs/Chelsea and now have 6/7?

I feel like the points will be really concentrated amongst a few suspects (e.g. Mane; Firmino; Kaku; Siggy) and it'll come down to "got or not".

I think most will have the more essential players, and a lot of our "top up" players are going to be poor quality (e.g. Tom Carroll or Fletcher given a start).

I reckon we'll get a net gain of about 10 points for having the extra players. Any other estimates? 🙂

There will always be other haulers than the usual suspects. Personally I expect Bournemouth against West Ham to be a goalfest. Meaning King/Fraser/Afobe and Carroll/Antonio/Lanzini/Snoddy/Ayew to haul.

I have 11 players for GW28. The players I think are 'poor waulity' in my team at the moment are Fletcher and Fonte

Fletcher I am more than happy to keep a bench fodder for the moment, because I'll ideally have a 3-4-3 lineup.

Fonte is a problem because I don't see WH tightening the defence, and with McAuley having horrible fixtures, I might want to get a more solid defender in place

Overall, I'm desperately hoping it's more than 10 points for the extra players to be honest 🙂

The trick is to not sacrifice key assets but to just get extra GW28 players from your "fillers", "enablers", bench fodder.

Having s bench moving forward of Jaku / Tom Carroll / Robertson / Olsson for example. It means you can lose the duds like Holgate, Stanislas and Amat.

Also there are a lot of players with great potential for GW28 and on that I'd want in my main team such as Lukaku, Coleman, Baines, Mane, Coutinho and Siggy etc.

        Exactly -

I discussed this before this GW - Too many people were sacrificing great long term assets (Kane, Alli, Eriksen, even Liverpool mids) for short term gains, which would then necessitate hits later (Because no one is going to hold onto Sane, Sterling and Aguero, as a trio, long term, with Sterling as the only good long term asset imo).

This week, the rule should be the same. Does the move benefit you long term, and are you taking out valuable assets?

I'm following this tactic, bar one difference: Llorente in for a hit. I want Kane instead of Ibra long term, but do not want to risk Kane now. So I will get in Llorente for a hit, knowing that -2 is my worst outcome.

Seconded. I've definitely learnt from this not to prioritise one GW over those preceding - I must be down ~100 points by avoiding Kane/Eriksen in in favour of GW28.

          Confirmation bias at its finest.

    Mane Siggy Phillips

Is Sterling, Aguero and De Roon to Firmino, Llorente and King worth a -8?

Aguero's PL record is ridiculous. 114 goals in 170 games - 12 in 20 this season.

    Some interesting stats:

    - Manchester City have won three of their last four league matches against Stoke, scoring four goals in each victory.
    - The Potters have lost seven of their eight Premier League matches away at Manchester City by an aggregate score of 19-0.

But Hughes is going to park the bus today:

"It may be that we look at shaping up to be a little bit more frustrating. I've always backed my teams to go there and have a go because I feel we've got good talent that can test any team in the Premier League. But sometimes if you're not quite there and everybody is not quite playing to their maximum you can get caught out. It's just where I see us at the moment."

However, Martins-Indi and Johnson are injured so Stoke may be missing some first choice defenders.

I read up about City's record against Stoke, as well as the fact that someone has had a brace almost every time against them in recent past

Whats your plan for getting the big hitters in for DGW's?

It's so easy to spread the Sanchez, Ibra and Aguero funds around your squad so that you'll need multiple transfers to get them back (i.e. downgrade say 2 x 8m players and upgrade a 3rd)

My plan at the moment unless anyone one has a better idea is:
Keep Aguero as a placeholder for Ibra (5 main choices for the other 2 slots: Llorente, Gabba, Lukaku & Kane)
Keep Mane as a placeholder for Sanchez

Rest of the team can do the weekly switcheroo as normal.

Get on the bandwagons now - let their prices rise so you can bank the cash and then use the extra cash to help fund the bigger hitters.

(Assuming Sanchez remains nailed and a points machine), which MF to swap to him in GW31:

    A) Coutinho
    B) Siggy

    D) Sane/Sterling

Deep down, I know it's Sane/Sterling, but feel like the double and Citeh's recent form makes Siggy the option...

Any thoughts on WC team for after GW28?

    Jaku - Pickford
    Walker - Valencia - Williams - Yoshida - Stephens
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Pedro - Iwobi - King
    Kane - Costa - Gab

Intention would be to shift Williams for double GW defender after 29.

Iwobi's stats have looked good since Xmas time - plus Arsenal double GW likely to come soon.

Thanks! What's the danger with Iwobi? Is he likely to drop out to, say, Xhaka or Ramsey?

I could sell Xhaka and King, bring in a cheapie 4.4 midfielder and then I'd have about 6.7 to play with. But even then there's no one in that price range that really tickles my fancy. Especially with the likelihood of a double gameweek coming soon for Arsenal, Soton, Mids and Sunderland. Might the Ox come into contention?

        • 9 Years

Thanks! Yeah, the danger there is that they're both so cheap they'll be hard to replace too.

Do we think Iwobi is nailed? He's started every game since GW17 and averaged 4.7 points per game since then. I want to get one of the early double GW players in - which means Arse, Soton (already have three), Mids or Sun...
