Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Henrikh Mkhitaryan returns from injury to score a vital away goal as Manchester United do just enough in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie.

FC Rostov 1 Manchester United 1

An ugly pitch led to an ugly match in which the two goals were the only moments of quality, with Manchester United’s effort tilting the tie very much in their favour.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored for the visitors, sweeping home Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s skilled cut-back as Jose Mourinho’s men produced an assured first-half performance.

The second-half belonged to the Russians, however. They deserved their equaliser and pushed United hard until the final whistle of a niggly match that was high on fouls – 38 between the teams – but low on finesse.

The wind, the cold and that pitch were chiefly to blame, though at least the return of Mkhitaryan afforded Jose something to cheer about.

Because of United’s packed schedule, the Armenian has missed only one league match since injuring his hamstring against Saint Etienne last month. His recovery – and goal – came as the Red Devils embarked on another four-match run across three competitions and ten days.

After the match, though, Mourinho admitted that the former Dortmund man – who was stationed in a central support role before being replaced midway through the second period – isn’t quite up to full fitness due to that stint on the sidelines.

“We know he cannot play 90 minutes. We knew he would only play 60 minutes – it doesn’t matter [what] the result [was], we made that decision together as he is not in the best condition. We gave him freedom to play in attacking positions with Zlatan, to try to find spaces to score. He did well and managed to finish the game without injury, which is important for us.”

Mourinho made seven changes to the side that drew with Bournemouth, but more strikingly moved to a back three in which Ashley Young and Daley Blind were used as wing-backs.

That formation could very well be wheeled out again for Monday’s FA Cup quarter-final tie with Chelsea and offers Fantasy managers the chance to pick from extra defensive options should Mourinho stick with his new tactic when his side returns to league duties in Gameweek 29.

With three clean sheets from their last four starts, United defenders are certainly worth considering in the short term. Once their Gameweek 28 blank is done and dusted, they’ll face Middlesbrough and Sunderland away and West Brom and Everton at Old Trafford.

Their run-in is tough – Chelsea at home in Gameweek 33 ushers in a schedule also involving Arsenal, Spurs and Man City all away before the season ends. However, with at least two double Gameweeks to come, we will surely be calling on United assets and a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic once again.

In the short-term, the Swede is out of the equations – he now starts a three-match ban that will keep him out of Fantasy action until Gameweek 31.

The predictable exodus is now in full flow – Ibrahimovic has been sold by more than 238,000 managers this week – and the 2.1%-owned Mkhitaryan, while not a like-for-like replacement, could be an alternative route into United’s promising upcoming fixtures, at least as a differential.

Should United, as expected, see off Rostov next Thursday at Old Trafford, their Europa League quarter-final tie would take place on April 13 and 20, either side of that huge home match with Chelsea.

Team: Romero, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Blind (Valencia 90+2), Pogba, Herrera (Carrick 90+2), Fellaini, Mkhitaryan (Martial 67), Young, Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: De Gea, Mata, Lingard, Rashford.

Ignoring all other factors which looks better for this gw only:

Coutinho 15 points in last 4 games

T Carroll 13 points in last 4 games

Might get lucky with a return from either, but you can't guarantee making the -4 up.

      Alonso > McAuley for a -4?

      Reasoning:
      1) It will allow me to easily do Ibra > Kane and Sterling >Sanchez
      2) Otherwise I only have 6 players out (Heaton, Baines, Siggy, Mane, Lukaku, Llorente)
      3) Alonso has been a bit gash in the last few weeks and he's pricey.

      Much obliged.

Llorente could be important this week. But for -8? I'm very hit averse.

Planning to swap Aguero and Sterling to Kane and Alli next week so transferring this week for one week seems a bit pointless. De Roon to Carrol for -2 is not exactly worth it is it?

Exactly the same. Guess it depends whether you'll keep him. My plans only allow for Phillips -> very cheap 5th & none particularly appeal even for the bench.

              A bit confused here...

Whay all this fuzz about Pool mids? Some are even tripling up with mane, cout and firm? For up to a -12? For this GW perfect, but they have have City and Everton the next two? I for one would much rather have Spurs, Chelsea players in these next two GWs. For GW 31 the fixtures turn to the better, so then it makes sense to maybe double up.

What is it that I don't get?

U take massive hits for one good GW, then you have to take another load of hits to sort out your team for GW 29 and 30? Strange....

I am of the opinion that my team that has 7 players this week with no hits will score just as well as a full team which has taken a -8 or -12

And then at least I am not stuck with deadwood after

I have Sterling who I want to turn into Alli next GW. I already have made 1 FT.

So this week for a -4 to Cout when (already have Firm) starts out at a -2 and if he does anything is instantly a positive transfer.

Then I just do Cout/Firm to Alli anyway after.

Doing nothing would mean I would do Sterling to Alli next week so all it is is basically gambling that Cout will score or assist and all is good!

Currently with 9 + Stanislas. Would you transfering out for Lanzini this week or wait one week and bring one of Pedro/Alli?

yeh i'd wait.. a lot of people are spouting this -2 'half price off hits' business. but you'll have to get rid of these players later on too and if you dont have a wc that will most likely involve a hit here n there. so realy its hits for 150% rather than 50%

              Hi Guys,

Posted early and got some really helpful advice, revisited my wildcard and am thinking the following,

              Jaku,
              Brunt, Robertson, Fernandez, Coleman
              Coutinho, King, Antonio, Mane, Carroll,
              Llorente

              Bench: Pickford, Alonso, Costa, Kane

My concerns are the lack of Sigs and Lukaku, Are they 'essential' for this gameweek seeing im on my wildcard?
It is just that it allows me perfect funds for Brunt, Coutinho and King out for Hazard, Alli and Walker.

Any advice will be appreciated. I will go through your comments above now.

if i were to wildcard this week. which i wouldnt have, would have saved it for next week but moving on. i would build a team that didnt put too much weight on this week. better to have a wc team for the next 9 gws than a good team for this shitty gw where everyone will probably get 40pts..

so look at the essentials who you would want for a while anyways: heaton, lukaku, siggy, coleman, mane.
and some good differentials who you can keep a few weeks then shift: lanzini/antonio, llorente

that should give you around 7 players, add one or two you cna think of that i cant and its not a bad team for this week. make 2-3 transfers and its a good team for the future as well

I wish I had balls big enough to follow my instinct and click on A. Ayew ..

              My team for GW 28:

              Jaku
              Baines Mcauley
              Antonio Firmino Siggy mane
              Llorente lukaku

Bench: yoshida, rose, graban, Cahill, cech, Phillips.

0 ft and already did a -4 hit. 4.3 itb

Please I need help, what should I do now for gw28 and the game weeks coming after?

Maybe stay with 9players playing, or I could go for Coleman, Clyde or another option.

              Thanks ...
