We were braced for disappointment and, four matches in, the Gameweek has delivered just that.

While it would have been hopelessly optimistic to expect big returns from Saturday’s limited set of fixtures, it’s already clear that we may have to settle for consolidation, if not damage limitation, from Gameweek 34.

Middlesbrough have been quick to snatch the role of arch villains.

Brought in by 201,000+ FPL managers – second only to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford for transfer traffic – we started the day wondering if striker Alvaro Negredo could possibly grasp hero status. Sadly, it seems we already have our answer.

In truth, Gaston Ramirez is perhaps the real culprit behind Boro and Negredo’s miserable afternoon. The Uruguayan’s needless back-to-back cautions reduced Steve Agnew’s to ten men having already fallen behind to an early Josh King goal at Bournemouth.

That hindered their toothless attack and meant that Negredo would again be starved of service. Agnew’s side mustered a pitiful five attempts on goal, with Negredo treated to two of those efforts.

Meanwhile, at the back, Ben Gibson – brought in by more than 118,000 FPL managers – marshalled a defence that capitulated to concede four goals and return zero points.

With both Hull City and Swansea City earning victory, the concern now is that Boro may be on the verge of giving up the ghost.

They will face Sunderland on Wednesday for their second Gameweek fixture in what has the makings of a dead rubber. The loser will sure be relegated, the victor, in all likelihood, will be accompanying them. A draw would be useless for both.

Optimists among us will be willing Agnew’s side to lift themselves – to bounce back from today’s damaging 4-0 reverse with a convincing performance with goals and a shutout.

However, we have to question just how much they have left in the tank. We didn’t neccersarily expect profit from the trip to the Vitality Stadium, but we could hardly have envisaged such a fruitless defeat.

Over 155,000 (3.5%) put the armband on Negredo, including 27 of the top 100 FPL managers – Rashford, with 20, was the next most popular armband option. That is a staggering statistic and evidence of just how a double Gameweek can turn heads and warp the decision-making of even the leading managers.

To be fair, today’s big single Gameweek asset fared little better.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku started his clash with West Ham as the most captained – backed by 602,000+ (13.6%) of FPL managers.

No doubt buoyed by his record of nine goals in nine appearances against the Hammers, it was the Belgian’s statistic of just a single goal in his last seven away trips that proved a more worthy indicator of what was to come.

Luakaku mustered just a single blocked shot on goal as a dull London Stadium encounter passed by with a whimper. That was typical of a day of disappointment.

There’s still some way to go, but already the fears surrounding the fools gold of double Gameweek 34 have been realised. It remains to be seen if Rashford and Crystal Palace’s assets can change the outlook.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So what are thoughts on early ibra buyers who were burnt ... do we feel sorry for them? They inflate transfer value so sod them? Or just part of the game?

Don't feel sorry for them. It was preventable and avoidable by waiting until after the game

I've been there before so he who has sinned can not cast the first stone.

The reality is the should have waited. It's more important to get the transfer right now at the business end than make the value pound.

But I'll not point and laugh, it's unlucky.

I know. They're wait and sees too. Gabbi has been interrupted by injury though, whereas Costa has been sh!te for a while. Jesus was also firing before he got injured

There's no guarantees with Jesus you have a player returning from a long term injury lacking match fitness and Aguero has been doing good.

To suggest either is a mistake imo.

I agree completely. I'd be wary of putting either in my WC at the moment. Just saying they have a case for form over Costa, at least before their injuries

Yeah with the potential price rises on DDG and Baily I would be priced out otherwise. Have the option of DDG-Cech for 36 as well if I wish to do so

I don't think I'll be interested in either on wildcard tbh.

2DGWS for Arsenal and decent fixtures in 37, United have Swansea next

Swap Redmond for King and that will be my front eight for gw37, so I like it a lot.

Can play 3-5-2 till he is fit, expected back for the cup game although admittedly may not start

He's on of them for me till he starts plays 90mins and looks good i couldn't go for him in the dark.

    4. MTPockets
      9 years, 3 months ago

      I'm also tempted but...
Want to see if/how MUN defence settles.
Is stones the one to get?
      Jesus ready?
      Gabbi definitely fit for 90mins?

Ideally I would rather have Clichy but can't stretch the budget that far

yeah Clichy would be a better option, also what about a pool mid instead of Sane as you have Jesus? downgrade DDG to gain funds?

well he's not completely immune to rotation, how many days apart are the games in the dgw? Just think if you have Jesus a Liverpool mid could be more productive.

    WC this week or next?

If this week I'd take out Siggy, Lukaku, Benteke, 4 of 5 defenders, maybe Zaha, maybe Heaton

I wouldn't wild card this week with all those Palace assets, great fixtures coming up plus Lukaku will score against Chelsea, he'll be motivated for that game and it's at home. Save it for 36/37

    BEHOLD the best* WC template

(* first attempt, please constructively criticise)

    DDG / Pickford

    Cedric / Stephens / Mustafi / Kone / Alonso

    Sanchez / Haz / Ali / King / Sane

    Kane / Rashford / Gabbi

I like it, and it is very close to what I am looking at. The one I can't get behind is Mustafi. I realize ARS have two doubles, but boy does there defense stink lately!

        • 11 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Thanks! And true, just feel obligated - I mean, they have back-to-back doubles!

        I could do:

        Cendric ---> Yoshida
        Mustafi ----> Koscienlny

    2. UnitedFan
      • 11 Years

Yoshida over Cedric. Puel loves to hand Martina the odd game. Mustafi > City defender. Not keen on Rashford. Keep an eye on Gabbi

Cheers, What city defender though? It is a rotation minefield

Clichy maybe? He's been nailed for a while according to his 'history'. Monitor Stones too. And regearding Rashford, I'm not sure, he's quite wasteful. We also have relatively tough fixtures. Could be good though. I'd wait and see

What's the thinking behind the balance of 5th midfielder spend?

I see Spectrum is doing the same. Maybe you's are correct but i was going to pick an actual bench option rather than a possible first team starter.

Very close to what I'm thinking.

Cech perhaps for the back to back dgw.

Cheap dgw maybe stephans and was thinking of gabriel if nailed. Also was thinking of pedro or walcott (if nailed) instead of king (sgw)

I'm going to go something like

      Pickford / Jaku
      Alonso / Stones / Davies / Yoshida / Stephens
      Sanchez / Hazard / Alli / Sane / King
      Kane / Jesus / Gabbiadini

The benefit of wildcarding this gw means that you can get in all this gws scorers and forget about last gws scorers
