Our first end of season poll was released today as the Fantasy Football Scout awards for 2016/17 get underway.

We first focus on goalkeepers and you get just a single opportunity to vote for your top stopper of the season from an overall Fantasy point of view. Factors such as points, price and value across the various games should all be taken into account.

Although our polls tend to be weighted towards the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we’ve also considered each player’s performance in other offerings where clean sheet alone are essential to points output.

Before we get underway, let’s cast an eye back to last year’s team of the season and, in particular, the choice for number one goalkeeper:

2015/16 Fantasy Football Scout Team of the Season Review

Goalkeeper – Jack Butland

Defenders – Toby Alderweireld, Hector Bellerin, Christian Fuchs

Midfielders – Riyad Mahrez, Dele Alli, Dimitri Payet, Mesut Ozil

Forwards – Jamie Vardy, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane

It’s fair to say that 2016/17 was one to forget for Jack Butland.

Afforded an initial 5.0 starting price on the back of 132 points in 2015/16, Stoke City’s number one was stuck in the treatment room for the vast majority of the season due to an ongoing ankle complaint.

Finally free from injury in Gameweek 34, Butland started the last five matches under Mark Hughes as the Potters’ Player of the Year Lee Grant dropped down to the bench.

Butland bagged 20 points over his subsequent five appearances, signing off in style with a 10-point tally in a 1-0 win away to Southampton in Gameweek 38.

A price of 5.0 or even 4.5 could be on the cards next time around, bringing Butland back into consideration as a viable option between the sticks once again.

While the Potters’ option failed to make the cut, here’s the rundown of those who made this term’s shortlist:

Tom Heaton

Burnley’s skipper and number one was the perfect fit as a “fire and forget” option for our squads.

Initially setting you back 4.5 as a route into the Championship winners’ defence, Heaton served up just 10 clean sheets yet still ended the season as the top-scoring keeper in FPL on 149 points.

His total of 21 bonus points was more than double any other goalkeeper, while he was also ranked top for saves (142) and was the number one player for value (29.2) in terms of points per million in the entire FPL game.

A price hike is clearly inevitable, but if Heaton can remain under the 5.5 mark, many will surely consider his services once again.

Thibaut Courtois

Winner of this season’s Golden Glove, the Chelsea stopper managed just one clean sheet in the first six Gameweeks before Antonio Conte’s switch to 3-4-3 transformed his side’s campaign.

Courtois chalked up a further 15 shut-outs in his subsequent 30 league outings to finish as the top-scoring keeper in both Sky Sports and the Telegraph games, although with just 13 save points over the season, he came in third in the FPL keeper standings.

The Belgian seems likely to stay at 5.5, yet with Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso offering a significant goal threat from the back, and Cesar Azpilicueta number one for bonus points among FPL defenders, Conte’s rearguard regulars are likely to keep Courtois out of consideration again.

Eldin Jakupovic

Starting the season priced at just 4.0, the Swiss international’s total of 23 points in the first five Gameweeks immediately made him a budget stopper option.

Jakupovic then fell out of favour under former manager Mike Phelan and it wasn’t until the arrival of Marco Silva in Gameweek 21 that he finally reclaimed a starting berth.

A very handy back-up keeper option, he finished the season with a 21.9% ownership and averaged 3.9 points per match in FPL – the same as Courtois, for example, and more than any other Hull City player.

Jakupovic’s heroics were not enough to prevent the Tigers from slipping into the Championship, but in just 22 appearances he claimed 18 additional save points, producing at least a single save point on 14 occasions.

It was somewhat telling that he was rested for the final day 7-1 hammering at home to Spurs. Essentially, Jakupovic conceded 36 goals in 22 starts (1.63 per match), whereas his Tigers’ rival David Marshall shipped 44 in 16 outings – that’s an average of 2.75 goals against by comparison.

Hugo Lloris

The Frenchman offered a secure route into the league’s most resilient defence, with Spurs conceding a mere 26 goals over the campaign.

Despite missing four matches, Lloris finished just six points behind Heaton at the FPL keeper summit and was runner-up in the Sky Sports and Telegraph offerings as well.

He was also placed second to Courtois for the Golden Glove by 15 clean sheets to 16, which was all the more frustrating for his owners as he conceded in each of the final four fixtures.

Like the Chelsea keeper, however, Lloris was overshadowed by his attack-minded defensive team-mates, with the likes of Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Ben Davies all thriving in Mauricio Pochettino’s 3-4-2-1.

Those tactics are likely to keep him off our radar once again as the Spurs wing-backs offer far more potential for points at either end of the pitch.

Lee Grant

With Jack Butland ruled out for months and deputy Shay Given conceding four times in three of the opening five Gameweeks, Mark Hughes’ decision to acquire Grant from Derby proved more than handy for Fantasy managers.

Initially listed at 4.0, Grant played every match from Gameweek 6-33 and offered us one of the most secure cut-price routes between the posts until Butland finally overcame his ankle injury to reclaim a spot in the Potters’ XI.

A total of 17 save points and nine clean sheets accrued from 28 appearances helped him to an average of 3.8 points per outing, though with Butland back in contention, Grant looks set to be on bench-warming duties next time out.

David de Gea

The most popular keeper in FPL, the United number one ended the campaign sitting in over 33% of squads.

De Gea missed just three league matches to offer the most secure route into a defence that served up 17 clean sheets – joint-top with Spurs for the season.

Unfortunately for his owners, United earned a shut-out on all three of those occasions – if he’d played and benefitted, the Spaniard would be sitting on 148 points, just one shy of Heaton at the summit.

Likely to remain at his initial price of 5.5 next time out, De Gea’s lack of value will struggle to convince many of us – particularly if team-mate Antonio Valencia breaks free from Jose Mourinho’s rotation policy.

And, of course, he might not even be at Old Trafford next season.

Jordan Pickford

Having wrestled the keeper’s jersey from Vito Mannone in Gameweek 3, the youngster was another 4.0 option to emerge in 2016/17.

Although his campaign was somewhat disrupted by an ankle injury between Gameweeks 19-25, Pickford’s heroics between the posts meant that he finished second only to Heaton for total saves (141 to 142).

The Sunderland stopper produced at least one save point in 23 of his 29 league outings to more than atone for a mere four clean sheets – Pickford provided a massive 36 points from saves alone.

His displays for the doomed Wearsiders already have the suitors circling and, if the rumoured move to Everton comes good, a possible cost of 5.0 could make him an appealing route into a defence that chalked up 13 clean sheets last time out.

Well that grav has a story. I think Moin had told me to get a grav. I wanted it to be a reflection of my fpl status. I did not know s*** about FPL then. So I googled the image of a naïve man and it was the first suggestion. So I kept it for sometime. Changed many after that.
Planning to stick to Eddie unless I find something interesting.

If you like it, that's all that matters.

I find gravs an interesting phenomenon in the sense people [me at least] form a vague idea of a manager's persona/ personality based purely on a picture which is totally ridiculous.

Incredible, especially seeing as we often think of the game as playing the averages and the tiny increments and seeing any deviation from perfection as failure. Owning Mané or Coutinho at some point this season would surely have got him even more points, so it's encouraging that there is room for creativity and even the fair share of mistakes and still win the thing.

The main difference between him and me is that he watches a lot of football and I hardly watch any, which is a concern for me. He didn't do much better than me last season though so there is hope for all of us yet!

yep I do think the eye test is so important. I can get so much more watching a game rather than highlights. You see how involved a player is and whether his wayward shots are that wayard etc.

But this season, where Liverpool were scoring freely but sharing all the goals, it was a bit of a gamble every week picking the right one, and easy to miss out on bonus points even if they scored or assisted. And, with the exception of Lallana, they were approaching premium price. Perhaps it paid off concentrating funds on players who played for lower scoring teams, but were more pivotal in all goals.

He's 28 in a few months - this is his career, given his history with injuries can't see him progressing any further now.

If he moves in the summer it will be interesting to see how he performs at a team who are a bit more competitive in the league - have mostly only seen highlights of him and looks like a good shotstopper but not convinced he's quite as amazing as a lot of people are suggesting.

He's not the tallest GK at 1.85. De Gea 1.92, Mignolet 1.93, Cech 1.96, Courtois 1.99. Even Schmeichel is taller. But Pickford is pretty good with the ball at his feet and has excellent distribution, he might be a good fit for Guardiola actually. He's also very agile as you'd expect from such a young guy.

He looks a proper player to me anyway.

Fair enough, as I say - I've only really seen highlights and that isn't sufficient to judge what he's like at marshalling a defence/controlling situations. In fact, I suspect it's hard to judge him on that at Sunderland no matter how much you've seen due to the frailties in the rest of the team. Would be interesting to see him somewhere different for sure.

He's definitely good with his feet. No doubt about it. Even some of the opposition managers have said it. He made 136 saves this season. All that matters is whether he can fit into a new team or not.

I was at Chelsea v Sunderland last Sunday, first time I have seen him live (I think).

You know that thing where it's obvious that a player is a cut above his team-mates? Like Sigurdsson at Swansea? That's Pickford. Something about his body language and demeanour marks him out before even a ball is kicked. And he was the one Sunderland player that looked like he belonged on the same pitch with Chelsea.

            I rate him anyway.

Would he be a good fit for Man City under Pep? I've heard that he's good with the ball at this feet, and being a cracking shot-stopper can only be a bonus on top of that!

Yeah, I think so. Said so above. And he fits the profile of the kind of player Pep has been bringing in - Sterling (signed on his advice apparently), Sané, de Jesus, Stones, all relatively young players.

Question maybe is whether they want more experience. Schmeichel has similar attributes but is much more seasoned.

Sunderland fans were good last weekend. "1-0 to the Championship" after the early goal and all that. It's a shame that 3 NE teams went down but Sunderland aren't going to recover until Mr Short exits as far as I can see.

Following on from the hot topic on chips last post, I think that more 'situational' chips like AOA would be a good thing. Whilst BB and TC automatically just give you a load of extra points, AOA requires a bit of thought and skill to use well, and surely that's the sort of thing that we're looking for.

I like the idea of a defense boosting chip, but I don't think that it would be possible to do it as getting double points for a clean sheet. The reason for this is that he current chips don't alter the breakdown of a player's score, just how their total score is applied to your team. For instance, say that Alonso gets a clean sheet:
    no chip = 6 pts
captain = two lots of 6 pts
TC =three lots of 6 pts
BB = 6 pts if he was on your bench
If there were a defense boost chip, he would score 10 pts for some people, but 6 pts for everyone else, which would make no sense from a technical standpoint.

Any defense boost chip would therefore have to perhaps double the returns of all your defenders.

I think that more chips would generally be a good thing, as it would force us to think about when to play them a little bit more.

A double captaincy chip, with two captains would also be good, but if you rule out tinkering with the way scores are broken down (as above) it gets tricky to think of too many good ideas.

A Super Sub chip where your highest scoring bench player automatically comes on might work?

Perhaps a Loan chip where you can make a one week transfer that automatically reverts back for no points cost?

i wonder if mark has any influence with the powers that be and if so we could come up with some ideas for fine tuning the game.

I quite like the idea of 2 captains but only x1.5 for each.

Given the number of people who always appear saying how they nearly got in player X for his unlikely hattrick, how about a nominated back up transfer which you get to retrospectively play with the chip just once a year? (they probably wouldnt go for it as retrospectively doing stuff like that might be difficult). Could be interesting if you get a seemingly decent option, do you stick or twist......

I'd like there to be 2 sets of chips, one for first half of the season and one for second half like the WC. Would be fun to have to play TC and BB in a SGW in the first half of the season.

A lot of these numbers seem suspect; people putting fabregas dgw on their bench instead of sgw barnes for example... I wouldn't bother using this data unless you dig in deeper. Probably better to look at the top x players and do it manually or make a script to scrape it than to use this.

          @Quillan

          To justify my high scores...

          AOA = 0
          BB = 27 pts (GW37 - Pickford = 6, Benteke = 7, Albrighton = 5, Yoshida = 9) all were single gameweek players
          TC = 17 pts (GW38 - Kane)
          Total = 44 pts

mate, i'm not trying to call anyone in particular out just saying that if we want a true judgement of their values we have to be honest about the data 🙂 not everyone is or will be honest so taking the individual out of the process will provide the best results.

Yeah I realised that, but seeing as I had one of the higher scores from using the chips I thought I would justify my scores as it should be included in the calculation of averages

      TC - 9
      BB - 17
AOA - 0 since King's absence slotted in a defender for it. (The defender I would have played anyway, who scored the same as my 5th mid)

Hard to really quantify it though, because for Bench Boost I wildcarded with it, so would have carded differently if I had only 11 to rely on scoring points.

      TC: 10
      BB: 29
      AoA: unused

(I'm figuring TC not as total amount (30pts), but as the extra points gained vs a standard captain selection. My player scored 10pts. Standard captain would have given him 20pts. TC = 30pts. So net gain was 10pts. Correct?)

    48. FPL Chip Scores - The Results
      Dugout
      • 11 Years

Thanks for all the responses. Here are my findings:

      - firstly it's important to acknowledge what several people have said - the BB chip and very hard to evaluate because most of us played it straight after our 2nd WCs, and the BB chip influenced our choice of squads. However, looking at my own WC squad - without the BB chip my bench would have been Pickford, Stephens, Holgate, Anichebe which is 0.7 cheaper than my actual bench. I honestly don't know how I might have spent that extra cash in my first 11. The BB effect on our WCs will be different for each of us, and I don't think there is a way of quantifying that.

      - secondly, in a game played by 4.5m people, a sample of 47 is laughably small. This research is not going to carry much weight, but I still find it interesting!

      - thirdly, I'm assuming you've calculated your BB and AOA chip "points gained" correctly, with an honest assessment of who you would have played that GW without the chip.

      So here are the numbers:

      SAMPLE SIZE: 47

      AVERAGE TC: 11.8
      AVERAGE AOA: 1.3
      AVERAGE BB: 21.6

      TOTAL AVERAGE POINTS GAINED: 34.8

        AOA CHIP
Based on these numbers, even with all the caveats, I think it's fair to say that the AOA chip is the least valuable. The highest score anyone gained from the AOA chip, in our sample is: 12. The worst score was -5 (myself!).

        TC CHIP
At an average of 11.8, this chip has proved reasonably useful, although in a season where we expect to score well over 2000 points, it seems over-hyped.

        BB CHIP
As said previously, this is very hard to evaluate, but even still, it has been the most valuable chip at face value.

Personally, I'd like to see the AOA chip replaced by something else. Perhaps a Double-Defence Chip, or Double-Cleansheet Chip (someone else suggested this).

Analysis is skewed by the fact that AOA clearly isn't intended for a DGW yet the others are, so BB and TC numbers are clearly inflated.

Combined with the fact that people often wildcard before the BB, and I think the true value of the BB during an ordinary gameweek would be significantly lower.

Yes but we always want to maximise the advantage any chip might offer us. The fact that BB and TC can be maximised on DGWs, and the BB can be further maximised straight after a WC merely demonstrates how useful those chips are. Either we haven't figured out how to maximise the "advantage" offered from the AOA chip, or there isn't much advantage in the first place!

But, for the sake of argument, let's half the average points gained by the BB and TC chips to take into account the DGWs: they still offer 5x and 10x the value of the AOA chip on average.

          • 17 Years

On second thoughts, maybe the BB analysis is useful. If we're all puttong lots of effort and potentially hits into making it work, its worth knowinf that, in a dgw situation, it will typically net us about 20pts, or 5 hits.

Question is, hiw much better is that than playing it in any old game week?

I think AOA is best used with a bit of setup. For instance, i deliberately brought in Ienacho as a 1 week punt in place of my cheap bench fodder before WCing. Worked well for me.

Fwiw, most of my sgw bench scores wwre in single figures, with 5 scores over 20 and 4 between 10 and 20.

Id say that the chip is generally worth around 15 pts when used in a dgw as opposed to a typical sgw.

Thanks - good point re potential trade-off value of BB against hits (although with a WC I would hope not to require hits).

Re AOA chip, you say: "Worked well for me" - I think that says it all. The AOA is a total lottery. Your "1 week punt" turned out well for you. My 1 week punt gained me -5!

        interesting research, my totals:

        TC: 9 (GW27)
        BB: 14 (GW37)
        AOA: 0 (GW20)

With AOA Andy Carroll scored the lowest out of my front 8, only 1 point, and my highest scoring benched defender also scored a point. So I put in 0 points gained. However I tried to improve my AOA score by selling my bench fodder 3rd striker (Anichebe) for Rondon. Rondon scored 5 points that week, Anichebe 0. So looking at it that way I gained 5 points from AOA. It's a tricky chip, I don't really like it, I was then stuck with a mid-priced player on my bench so you could even argue it imbalanced my team.

TC surely hugely skewed by Aguero. Had he got 20+ the average would likely be almost 20. TC is likely higher risk but has a higher likelihood of a big reward maybe

Narrowed next seasons midfield down fo five from:

    Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - Eriksen - Son - KdB - Sane - Mane - Coutinho - Firmino - Siggy - King

Reckon I'll just rotate through this lot as & when on form. Simples.

Pogba, Fabregas, Pedro & Willian in reserve.

Alli this season: 18 goals, 11 assists, 7 double digit hauls, 17 bonus points
Eriksen: 8 goals, 20 assists, 10 double digit hauls, 30 bonus points

Obviously Alli is more of a goal-scorer and Eriksen more of a creator and playmaker, but would it be fair to say that Eriksen is the more explosive one and more of a bap-magnet, and Alli the more consistent one? Or am I over-simplifying things?

I expect both to be priced exact same next season.

Otherwise if one is cheaper, everyone will pile on them and the other will have 0% ownership.

What mistakes would you say you made in the latter half of the season? Obviously there were some calls that went wrong, but often they're only wrong in hindsight - e.g. can't legislate for a missed penalty here, or picking the wrong player out of Eriksen/Alli. Any actual mistakes?

Selling Cech and Stephens on WC late cost me a fair few points to get Pickford and Daniels. Keeping Llorente for too long also hurt.

Old link? DGW season didn't go as well as it could have compared to a few on here. King was a big factor in general. Got away with selling Alonso in general.

Indeed it was, updated now. I certainly didn't make the most of wildcard and few bad captain shouts. I also dropped Alonso but didnt cover his points well. Blind gabriel and DDG the main poor choices.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/manchester-united-defender-guillermo-varela-infected-tattoo-eintracht-frankfurt-dfb-pokal-final-a7753476.html

Man Utd defender Guillermo Varela, who is on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, decided to get a new tattoo just days before the German cup final this Satuday. The tattoo then became infected, ruling him out for the match. Eintracht were looking to make his move permanent but now have stated that his time at the club is over.

What an idiot...why could he not wait a week until after the cup final?!

    From all the players you had in your team this season, name 3 players you will never ever buy them again. I start;

    A) Phillips
    B) Mirallas
    C) Olsson

For me it would be tempting to say Gabbiadini (of course), Hazard and Stones as the players that let me down most often. But a good lesson to learn is never to write off anyone because you might miss lots of points down the line. For example, I rage-transferred out Kane after captaining him for 2 blanks in a row and vowed never to get him back in my team.

Luckily I changed my mind for the last few games of the season!

And of course had Hazard only for his blanks 2 seasons in a row

I would even buy Gabbiadini again if he shows form. My point is never to be too stubborn. (although of course it will take more to make me trust Gabbiadini again!)

Lots of people here seem to have been burned by Hazard. I can't complain overall because I had a very good season, but it goes to show there is always lots of room for improvement.

Recent finishes being weighted more is a bit unfair. Maybe should be all your ranks and divide by number of years played.
