Our third development update of the summer brings additional statistics to the members’ area and adds the first set of Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points System (BPS) tables.

For those who aren’t aware, the BPS is used to decide the distribution of FPL bonus points based on a series of statistics collected by Opta.

Our work in this area is not yet fully complete, but with the FPL set for launch next week, we wanted to get this first stage live and available to you.

Here’s what’s included in this update.

Baseline Bonus Point System Tables
We’ve added two tables to present the statistics that generate the BPS. There are tables showing both the positive and negative factors. In both tables we’ve included the Baseline BPS statistic and a Minutes per Baseline BPS.

The Baseline BPS strips out the core actions – goals, assists, clean sheets and also winning goal.

By removing these, we can get a clearer view on those players who benefit most from the “baseline” statistics in the BPS.

In this way, we can compare defenders in a single team and get a strong sense of who is more likely to return bonus points when a clean sheet is achieved.

Obviously, when assessing targets, goals and assists should be considered. But these are factors that we are all well aware of when assessing our tables and deciding on selections.

Remember, if you click on a club icon in the player tables, this will filter a table to this club alone.

Custom Table Statistics
In addition to the BPS tables, we’ve also made an array of new statistics available for use in custom tables – including statistics not listed in our current tables.

These also include statistics missed from Update Two:

Big Chances Missed Ball – A big chance missed when the player makes no contact with the ball
Big Chances Missed Shots – A big chance missed when the player connects with the ball
Big Chances Scored – big chances converted by that player/team.

The following stats have been added, supplying the calculated BPS points for their relevant action:

BPS CBI
BPS Clean Sheets
BPS Goals
BPS Recoveries
BPS Time Played
BPS Yellow Cards
BPS Baseline – the BPS tally for a player with goals, assists, clean sheets and winning goal BPS removed.
Winning Goal

During this work we also made several tweaks to some core statistics. These included Clearances which in turn had a knock on to the CBI stat – Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions.

This was a fairly minor change, which nonetheless reduced the number of clearances for some players.

Effectively, Opta stopped using a “Failed Clearance” event and replaced this with “Blocked Cross”. This new event was removed from our existing Clearances statistic to give us an updated “Successful Clearance”. This is now shown on our Defending tables and used in all CBI calculations.

What’s next?

We will first react to your feedback and look to build this in the next update. However, we plan to work with the BPS data further and add areas to the player profiles, player comparisons, team profiles and match dashboards.

We may also add a BPS area to the main Members’ Dashboard. We will then introduce all remaining statistics for use in custom tables.

We have started research on touch heatmaps. Having already refined all our touches data, we know that this now involves purely the visualisation, so we’re hopeful that once we have decided on the solution, we will make some progress in the next update.

I also want to start work on a new form guide tool for both teams and players. It’s likely we will begin preliminary work for this next week.

We are also starting our research of Expected Goals – a very popular metric in football. I’ll let this guy explain the basis of this statistic.

With our Opta event feed, we have all we need to plot expected goals. We just need to decide on an approach and methodology. This will likely be a feature we work on over a number of updates in the coming months.

Hopefully, you’ve seen enough so far to be assured that we will go on improving the features available and the site overall.

Once the season is underway, we will put more emphasis on the main site as Mat becomes more familiar with the code and set-up in that area.

You can see our current task list and track our progress through the next update via this roadmap.

You can also send your feedback and requests to me at mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Our previous updates are detailed here and here.

A reminder that, if you want access to both this update and future additions to the members’ area, you can sign up for the new season now for our pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00).

Last season’s memberships expired on June 1, but you can now renew to get access to the members area.

Existing registered users can upgrade via this link. New users, who are yet to get a registered account, can sign up via this link.

If you’re new to the benefits of Fantasy Football Scout membership, you can get full details, along with a series of movies previewing the content, via this page.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Baseline Bonus Stats

The introduction of baseline bonus stats in the members area is particularly useful as it reveals those players that may dip under the radar but offer strong potential for bonus returns. This is particularly the case for defenders who keep clean sheets, as well as those midfielders who are adept at passing and tackling.

Which players do you have your eye on next season as bonus magnets?

How important are bonus points do you? What advice would you give someone who was new to the game about the best players to select for bonus?

For members I've already delved into the stats and created this table looking at last season's bonus magnets. This has already given me a couple of names I'm looking to put in my GWK 1 squad. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/19239/

Given their opening fixtures, the STH defenders are worth keeping an eye on. I think the new BAP tool will be very helpful here. Stephens may be the one to benefit.

first question is are we assuming no changes to the bps system, and if there are any, will this be able to take them into account?

This year I've my eye on nailed defenders who like bonud points from mediocre teams like Southampton. Hopefully Stephens will fit the bill.

Hard to say at the moment but both very tempting. Ake at 5.0 looks good. Trippier only if they ditch Walker and get in a replacement who will be Trippier's understudy. Currently the Spurs man remains a rotation risk.

Minutes Per Baseline BPS is great stuff. Not just for goalkeepers and defenders - if you're torn between a couple of midfielders and forwards, thinking their prospects for goals and assists are about the same, it could well be the decider. For example, if you were deciding on a Spurs or Liverpool midfielder.

I like the Big Chances Scored stat. Big Chances is defonatelt one of the best correlators with goals scored.

Mark, do I at least get a packet of Tangfastics for coming up with the whole Baseline BPS thing?

Mourinho needs to be more stringent on the social media ban. Fair enough if Pogba was putting in the performances week in week out he could get away with it a little bit more, but when he's playing fairly mediocre acting like a teenage teenage girl on bloody Instagram it's just embarrassing to himself and club.

Always liked Iheanacho, thought he deserved more game time. Hopefully a move to Leicester can really forward his career. Bit of a queue for that position though with Vardy, Okazaki and Slimani all fighting for it.

Far from definite, but assuming a transfer doesn't happen before FPL goes up, how much do we think Mahrez will be this season? Perhaps 8m?

The same Jim White that spent all yesterday morning boasting that he broke the Lukaku story first and all afternoon back pedaling when Everton said there was no agreement? 🙄

To be fair I listened in and he said there are reports Lukaku deal has been agreed then he was the first to say that Everton said no agreement as he ties with Moshiri.

"Play" might be a bit of a strong word; he's on their books. Played 1 league game (replaced Bravo)

Meanwhile, Siggy can't leave now - the Swans have brought in a young compatriot!

"Arnor Gudjohnsen, a half-brother of Eidur Gudjohnsen, has joined Swansea on a three-year deal.

The 16-year-old arrives from Iceland Premier League side Breiðablik and will play for the Swansea academy. "

    Herrera Fabinho

Power and Finishing of Lukaku, Pace af Rashford,Creativity of Mikhi. Pogba linking the mifeild with attack with his runs, Energy, stamina and legs of Herrera and Fabinho at the heart f midfeild

And that's another good point. Lukaku is a very different kind of player to somebody like Rashford. Mourinho could well pick and choose his tactics depending on opposition.

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 14 Years
            8 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, he did like using Rashford against the bigger sides to hit them on the counter!!

Thing is Lukaku is pretty quick too, despite what people think, and he scored on the counter last season (There's a 'goals from the counter attack' stat in the member's area) But something to be wary of, as you say...

              • 13 Years

I suppose his ownership will be so high that we could hide behind that to start with...so maybe pick him and see how things pan out....

That was more towards the end of the season when he knew winning the EL was his only chance of getting back into CL.
We should be okay with rotation at the start of the next season.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

It'd be nice to think so.

I just don't trust Mourinho not to throw in curve balls....he is after all quite well known for it. It's not like Kane at Spurs where the team is all geared up to him and almost essential to them.

Yes, Mou could sub Lucky for Rashford for his pace late on. There is one point I'd like to assert, as a leading member of the Union of Lazygits:

The upside of Lucky's unwillingness to run around and put himself about is that he's far less likely to get injured, fatigued or sent off. That's got to count for something!

I'm sure will have higher ownership. The problem is too many people are expecting to have Kane, Lucky and another expensive forward (Lucozade, Jesus) - and i just don't think it will be possible with another 12 players to purchase. Gonna be some hard hard decisions to be made. I'm already considering Pogba over Lucky for value.

Will probably go without Lukaku to begin with if he's 12+mil

      3. stat
          8 years, 10 months ago

Absolutely - if you go with Kane, Jesus/Lacazette and Lukaku, either your defence or your midfield will suffer. Having those three players will probably take up around 35% of your budget, meaning you'll end up with having to make significant cutbacks in spending in the rest of your team.

          For example:

          4.5 / 4
          5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4
          8 / 8 / 8 / 6 / 4.5
          13 / 10 / 11.5

          or

          4.5 / 4
          5.5 / 5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4
          8 / 8 / 6.5 / 6 / 4.5
          13 / 10 / 11.5

It's going to be very tough to choose our teams this season, but I'm hoping that it will lead to more variance since there are going to be plenty of players that could turn into must-haves that obviously nobody can afford to get all of them (Kane, Jesus, Aguero, Lukaku, Lacazette, Chelsea's new striker, Sanchez, KdB, Eriksen, Alli, Coutinho, Mane).

Unless another keeper comes in, Lossi will be nailed on.

In defence, Tommy Smith and Chris Schindler will be nailed on. I strongly suspect new signing Zanka will be too. I think Lowe will start at LB, but Malone is clearly challenging, so perhaps avoid that one.

In midfield, Mooy nailed on, and will play 90 most weeks. Reckon Hogg and Williams will rotate around him. I'd say Ince, Kachunga, Palmer and VLP will take the other spots, with security of starts in that order.

Up front, if we play with one striker, it will be Mounie, and would certainly be the one I'd go for. I imagine Wells will play if we ever go two up top, as he's a different player. Imagine Depoitre will play from the bench.
